Gabriel Hershman is an author who also publishes under the name of Daniel Kupfermann. He has written 5 books, so far. Four were film biographies and written under the name of Gabriel Hershman. He has also written a memoir called, Don't Be So Sensitive.“I decided to write the memoir under a pseudonym as a demarkation from my other work but also to shield the work from other living family members.I grew up in London and then moved to Portugal and then Bulgaria. Writing a memoir is always a work in progress and it was only when I'd finished the book that I realised I'd been dealing with 4 family members who had attended boarding school and the strange effects on their psyche."Questions for Gabriel:I would love for you to share how you got into writing. What drew you to write your autobiography? What was it like growing up? Could you please share some of your journey growing up?What was it like being a day pupil at a school where there were boarders? What did you make of boarding at that age?Could you please talk about highly sensitive people (HSP)? What is it? P.7Your step-father Gerard's experience of boarding school: He was “sent away” “despatched” “being kicked in the teeth.” P.24 “he'd been through a tough time at boarding school” P.83The physical, mental and emotional treatment you received from Gerard. What was it like growing up with an ex-boarder? P58 – “Gerard criticised me...” and would then.. P.59 “lose his temper.”Even though Gerard had had a tough time at boarding school (your mother saying that he'd had “an emotional hysterectomy”) why did he want to send you away to one? P.83As I was reading the book I could see many of Gerard's traits as symptoms of trauma/ boarding school syndrome: only interested in beautiful women/ weathy people, trying to curry favour with people. He had to win everytime. Very critical of you.Leaving you for most of the winter age 10 with your alcoholic half-brother age 20. How was that for you? P.88 (Your mother leaving the same age her mother died age 10 – P.94)Having no one to validate your feelings and left alone (P.134) How was that for you?The experiences of your half-brothers and your mother's at boarding school (P.144)Your experiences of Dulwich - “Dulwich was remarkably sink or swim.” P.151 Bullying P.160What other aspects are there to these single-sex 'elite' schools that are detrimental to development?Four members of your family went to boarding school and all became problem drinker. Episode 1 of the new segment from BY THEIR FRUITS called Testimony Central, we bring on a good buddy named Mason Hershman who has a wild Testimony on how he came to know the Lord Jesus Christ
Every B2B brand voice sounds the same. Let's mix in some drama, a bit of comedy, maybe even suspense. We're here to convince you to blend genres and create something new, unique and attention grabbing. We're taking notes from author Dan Simmons and his book The Terror with the help of our guest, JumpCloud CMO Micha Hershman.Together, we talk about mixing genres, using persuasion, and basing your narrative on a true story.About our guest, Micha HershmanMicha Hershman is CMO at JumpCloud, where he scales JumpCloud's go to market (GTM) strategy and creates programs to deeply engage JumpCloud prospects, partners, and customers. He is a marketing leader with over 20 years of experience in steering marketing initiatives for category leaders such as Eventbrite, Envoy, and Heap Analytics. He has played a pivotal role in scaling organizations, notably contributing to the global demand engine that facilitated Eventbrite's successful IPO in 2018. His strategic prowess extends to category creation efforts, resulting in Envoy's unicorn valuation, and platform positioning strategies that culminated in Heap's acquisition by Contentsquare. What B2B Companies Can Learn From The Terror:Mix genres. Borrow from action and sci fi and fantasy and romance and bring it all together to create unique content. Don't feel like your content has to fit into a box or a category. And your content doesn't have to be fact-based (as long as you tell your audience it's fiction.) Give yourself room to play. Micha says, “[Dan Simmons has] a reputation of writing on the margins in general. Like, yes, he's written science fiction and horror books, but they all bleed into each other. This book, Ilium and the Companion, Olympus, is Greek mythology and Shakespeare and Star Trek all smashed up together into this bizarre duology. And I really love the way that he writes on the fringes and smashes all the stuff up together that he's interested in.”Persuasion is key. It's a top must-have skill for any marketer. Otherwise no one is gonna click on your content, read your blog, or subscribe to your newsletter. Micha says it best: “You can have great ideas, you can make big pitches, but if you're terrible at presenting it, your great idea for how you're going to save 126 people and get your ship out of the ice and get back to civilization is going to get washed away by some loudmouth who's a really brilliant orator.” Practice writing authoritatively, quote clients, speak to your audience's deepest cares, concerns and values. And get them hooked.“Based on a true story.” These are magic words that give you a foundation to build a Remarkable story from. Meredith says, “It gives you the bones of the story, but then it gives you freedom to imagine the rest and make it what you want.”Quotes*”You can have great ideas, you can make big pitches, but if you're terrible at presenting it, your great idea for how you're going to save 126 people and get your ship out of the ice and get back to civilization is going to get washed away by some loudmouth who's a really brilliant orator.” - Micha Hershman*”I can't tell you how much effort I spend trying to talk my team down from doing more work. Like we don't have to go this big. We don't have to spend this much time, money, effort… It's not going to require it. And actually like, well, how little do we have to invest in this feature launch or this acquisition or whatever? Because marketers will add 10 billion bells and whistles. Nobody cares. Nobody wants them. My aim would be to work 35 hours a week because we're so good at the 80 20 rule. We know what 20 percent drives the business.” - Micha Hershman*I think on the procurement technology side, buying is relatively straightforward. You've got a couple suppliers, you've got cash in your hand, they've got a cost, you're negotiating. It's a pretty straightforward process that it comes down to math in many cases. On the creative side, a totally different animal. There's no procurement team in the world that can help you. Your CFO is going to shrug their shoulder and say, ‘I don't know, you're the marketer.' So much like Dan Simmons, you're going to have to have some kind of vision. You have to trust your gut. You're going to have to get bold and go places that maybe other people aren't really ready for you to try.” - Micha Hershman*”On the classic B2B SaaS side, the parallel I often draw is about the vision. The founder has this idea for what [the product] can be and how it will disrupt and change the world, even though there's no appetite for it at all. There's no comparable products out there. And then there's the super prosaic, ‘Our customers ask for this feature. We have to build this feature,' right? Which is a hundred percent data driven and to find that right balance between like vision and satisfying your customer data driven needs is that pressure that's always on. Finding that right balance, there's some kind of art in it.” - Micha Hershman*”As B2B marketers, we're dry, just so dry. It's just like, ‘This is the facts, and this is the information. And there's not a lot of packaging or storytelling or creativity or visual design. But we're not companies who buy, we're people who buy. And so, you know, storytelling is intrinsic to our nature. We all like beautiful things and we're all interested in creative expressions. So I do think that there is more room to explore there.” - Micha HershmanTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Micha Hershman, CMO at JumpCloud[12:10] Exploring JumpCloud: A Glimpse into the CMO's Role and Company Vision[13:54] The Creative Journey of The Terror: From Rejection to Success[25:41] Breaking Down the Story of The Terror: A Blend of History and Fiction[28:27] Exploring Dan Simmons' Unique Literary Style[29:38] Leadership and Creative Problem Solving Insights[31:28] Balancing Fiction with Reality: A Deep Dive[36:03] The Power of Storytelling in B2B Marketing[49:58] Leadership, Hubris, and Survival: Key Themes Explored[53:08] Advice for CMOsLinksRead The TerrorConnect with Micha on LinkedInLearn more about JumpCloudAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. In this episode, co-founder of MTH Ethan Hershman shares his inspiring journey of battling alcoholism and drug addiction in his early teens, getting sober, and ultimately co-founding Move to Heal. Ethan dropped out of college to run the family business, and for a decade juggled his addiction and growing career. George Hershman's term as chair of solar's leading trade group began with optimism and excitement. He stepped into the role with the Solar Energy Industries Association, or SEIA, in January 2020, when the industry's meteoric rise was all but cemented. Today, we know the tumultuous stretch that quickly followed.A pandemic, supply chain constraints, and a potentially existential tariff fight made even the "solar coaster" moniker appear ill-equipped to describe the moment. How to Split a Toaster: A divorce podcast about saving your relationships
On this episode of How to Split a Toaster, hosts Seth Nelson and Pete Wright speak with licensed marriage and family therapist Linda Hershman. They discuss the rising trend of "gray divorce" among older couples, the practice of discernment counseling, and how divorce later in life impacts adult children.Key Takeaways on Gray DivorceGray divorce rates have risen dramatically, from 10% of couples over 50 getting divorced in 1990 to 25% in 2020. The rate increases for second and third marriages.Four cultural changes are contributing to the rise in gray divorce: women gaining more financial power and independence, increased life expectancy, no-fault divorce laws, and evolving cultural norms about marriage.Unique concerns in gray divorce include caregiving as you age, less time to rebuild assets, and women worrying whether they'll find new partners.Discernment CounselingDiscernment counseling helps mixed agenda couples (one leaning in, one leaning out) decide whether to stay married or divorce. There are 3 paths offered in discernment counseling: stay the course and do nothing for now, move towards separation and divorce, or enter intensive marriage counseling where divorce is off the table. Discernment counseling is not regular marriage counseling - the goal is not to improve the marriage but rather to help the couple decide what to do next. It aims to create momentum to save the marriage for those who are unsure if they want to stay married.Listener Question on Custody and Visitation RestrictionsJudges can and do restrict custody and visitation if there are demonstrated safety concerns and evidence the children are being negatively impacted, like DUIs with a child in the car. However, schedule disruptions or complications alone don't usually qualify as emergencies warranting restrictions in the eyes of the court. The bar is high for judicial intervention limiting parental rights. The advice is to check your local laws and not assume your situation will automatically be seen as an emergency. Present concrete evidence of danger or harm if you want the court to intervene with custody and visitation restrictions.Linda Hershman's BookLinda Hershman is the author of Gray Divorce: Everything You Need to Know About Later Life Breakups. HOW TO DEAL WITH ADULT CHILDREN DURING A DIVORCE. EP 99. HOST: Beverly Price, Divorce & Empowerment Coach GUEST: Linda Hershman, Licenced Marriage and Family Therapist SUMMARY: In the tumultuous process of divorce, our focus tends to gravitate toward the younger ones caught in the midst of it all, inadvertently sidelining the experiences of adult children, who can also be profoundly affected. Adult children are often unfairly perceived as resilient and self-reliant individuals capable of weathering any storm, a misconception that discredits their feelings and emotional experiences during their parents' separation. In this episode of Her Empowered Divorce, your Host, Beverly Price, talks to Linda Hershman, a returning guest who is a Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist and the author of Gray Divorce. They discuss this lesser-explored topic: gray divorce and its impact on older children and why acknowledging the vulnerability of adult children and providing them with the support they need is as crucial as safeguarding the interests of the younger ones.Divorce doesn't have to be a death sentence. With the right support and guidance, you can move through the process with knowledge, skills, and confidence. If you'd like to schedule a complimentary private consultation, reach out to Beverly at: https://beverly-price.as.me/Consultation. Visit https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/her-empowered-divorce/id1635143315 to access the entire archive of Her Empowered Divorce episodes, and while you're there, please subscribe, rate, and review our show! KEY TAKEAWAYS: What is the phenomenon of adult children and divorce? Divorce's impact on adult children is considered part of ambiguous losses. These are losses that are not recognized by society as losses and for which there is no community support. It's not simple for adult children of divorce (ACODs); they experience many losses, such as family traditions, financial losses, and broken promises, that may devastate them. Listen to them, ask them, validate their feelings, and encourage them to get their own support. Why is parent splitting when children are first going to college the worst time ever? Going to college is a transition time, and divorce impedes this transition. Children get stuck with one leg at school and the other at home and are constantly worrying about what is going on at home. What is the financial implication of divorce on ACODs? So many adult children organize their lives around their parents' promises, but they are broken by divorce and loss of childcare.Regardless of your child's age, don't put them in the middle of your divorce. Your children are your children, not your friends; do not lean on them for any support, get your own support system in place, and don't look to your adult children to parent you. NOTABLE QUOTES:People tend to assume that because ACODs are adults, they have their own lives, and they can understand what is happening and deal with it, but in reality, ACODs suffer very different and sometimes even worse losses in the divorce process than their younger counterparts. (Linda)Remember, even though they are adults, they will always be your children; don't lean on them as if they were your friends. Don't complain about the other spouses or make your children feel sorry for you that they become the parent-to-parent and fix you. (Beverly)The worst time for parents to split up is when their kids are first going off to college. Going...

Today on Feminine Roadmap we're talking about gray divorce with family therapist Linda Hershman. Linda realized that she was seeing more and more couples in midlife considering divorce. She had an opportunity to speak in another country and wondered if gray divorce was an issue that would be relevant elsewhere. What she learned was that gray divorce was, in fact, a global issue. This led her to do a lot of research around the topic in preparation for her presentation in Europe. In this episode we discuss the findings from her research and her counseling practice. Since 1 in 4 marriages in midlife end in divorce, this has become an important area for her to understand. She encourages those considering divorce to take the time to understand why this is happening, identify the fears and real concerns of divorcing later in life. Also she talks about research on the long term effects of divorce on adult children. She advises listeners to consider what they can do if you're not sure whether or not you want to get a divorce. Also understanding what kind of supports are available to you as you navigate this journey. Often we turn to friends and family but Linda advises listeners to talk to a professional who can give unbiased input and perspective. While every season of marriage has it challenges, midlife has become a difficult frontier for at least 25% of marriages. If you or anyone you know are struggling with this season of your marriage, this episode will offer good insight and advice. Grab a cuppa something wonderful and be encouraged that this can be navigated well. https://lindahershman.com/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4127929/advertisement

Today's Tactical Tuesday is a compilation of my favorite moments from the recent George Hershman 2-part interview. If you missed that one, then you'll for sure want to queue up this more snack-able episode (but I'll bet it will leave you ready to commit to the longer version!) It was packed with great stories and advice, but it was also a long interview, and maybe you're short on time. So think of this as the SparkNotes or CliffsNotes version of those two back-to-back podcasts. George is a solar industry icon and one of my heroes in the industry. His leadership & industry accomplishments have set the bar for so many who see him as a mentor, boss and colleague. And, he brings unparalleled insights into the clean energy revolution from his vantage point as the CEO of SOLV Energy and board chair of the Solar Energy Association (SEIA). Todays, preview give you a glimpse of the doubleheader mega interview I mentioned, which you can listen to in its entirety in https://mysuncast.com/suncast-episodes/478 (SunCast Episodes 478 and 479). Many older people, particularly women, are “divorce-curious”. They wonder about life on the other side of a tired marriage, and feel that perhaps it isn't too late. Could a divorce be the route to rediscovering passion, stimulation and new experiences? Others are in the position of having a divorce thrust upon them, and are left to work through the pain and upheaval a split can cause in later life, both for themselves and the family unit. Linda Hershman is an expert on the “silver divorce” and has worked extensively to help couples navigate divorce. In this episode, Linda and Andrew discuss: ⭐️ Deciding whether it is in fact your relationship that's the problem ⭐️ First steps if you are among the “divorce-curious” ⭐️ The impact of silver divorce on adult children ⭐️ The practical and financial impact divorce can have, particularly on women ⭐️ Discernment counselling - a style of marital counselling for “mixed-agenda” couples, where one wants to stay and the other wants to leave. Linda Hershman is the author of Gray Divorce: Everything You Need to Know About Later-Life Breakups. She has worked as a marriage and family therapist for more than 25 years, and has presented internationally on silver divorce and the adult children of divorce. Storehouse Tea - Dan Hershman - SAT AM Radio 20220611 by God's Unchanging Words in a Changing World
George Hershman is the CEO of SOLV Energy (formerly known as Swinerton Renewable Energy), a company that, in my tenure in the industry, has grown to become the largest utility-scale solar Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) company in the US. I've been impressed at every turn how George, and his all-star team at SOLV, has consistently delivered the highest quality on almost every standard, excels at employee retention & growth, and is generally considered the premium brand when it comes to EPC firms (both in perception & price!). So, naturally I've long-wanted to get George in the SunCast booth to hear the story of how it all came together, and where it's going from here. This is Part 1 of a 2-part interview where I do just that. George began working for general contractor, Swinerton Builders, in 1997. In 2008, he was tapped to build the company's presence in the growing solar sector. George was employee number-one at Swinerton Renewable Energy, a company which quickly grew into the country's largest grid-level solar installer and the #1 Solar Contractor in America. George has spent his career in general construction management. His wide expertise in energy issues, trade policy, construction projects, and the technical hurdles that the solar industry currently faces gave plenty of headroom for a wide-ranging discussion, so we navigate topics from across the spectrum of startup culture and corporate growth and we get into the challenges inherent in growing anything as big as what his company has become. In 2021, Swinerton Renewable Energy and its wholly owned subsidiary SOLV, Inc. merged into a single company, SOLV Energy. George and I get into the details of the decision to pursue the merger and spinout from Swinerton. As CEO of SOLV Energy, he continues to position the company at the forefront of the renewable energy economy. Fun Fact, George is also an avid sailor, recently participating in San Diego's Hot Rum Series with the boat he co-owns (called “GoodEnergy”, in case you get the chance to meet him in a happy someday and want a good starter conversation!). Hope you enjoy this Part 1, and please queue up Part 2! This is Part 2 of a 2-part interview with George Hershman, CEO of SOLV Energy. If you missed Part 1, please do queue it up, and I would encourage you to listen to them in order. ;-) George is leading a powerful transformation of the company he helped form & eventually spin out of Swinerton Renewable Energy over the past 13 yrs, and he and his team have positioned the company as a clear frontrunner of the renewable energy economy. As a prominent business leader in the solar industry, George brings over 30 years of construction experience and is widely recognized for his expertise in the engineering, construction, and management of solar power plants. This second half of the discussion looks into his work at the Solar Energy Industries Association (where he's now serving a second term as Chairman of the Board) and the opportunities that we have as an industry to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs in the coming years. George also shares his candid views on leadership & team building, the legacy of mentors in his own career, and how he thinks about building talent among his own team. “I want entrepreneurship to be infectious in this business, and I want to support it.” - George Hershman SOLV is a success story on so many fronts, and It was an honor to get a chance to hear it from George himself. As Jim Rohn says, “Success leaves clues”, and in the case of Swinerton & SOLV Energy the fingerprint & evidence of their impact on our industry is evident and will endure for decades to come.
