In today's episode we look at “Floating Clouds” by Hisako Hibi, one of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans incarcerated in prison camps on the West Coast during WWII. Paintings like this served as the only visual record of life in the camps as well as a way for prisoners to deal with the harsh conditions. We'll find out how she and her family were able to build a new life after the war and how she persevered through her art and with the help of fellow immigrants. Hélène: [2:28] Oui, on aimerait vraiment lire ton article. Judith: [3:05] Oui. The Belvedere Hotel is in the heart of New York City's theater district. Many of its guests come to see the sights, take in a show. But there are a few dozen people who call the Belvedere home. Decades ago, they came to New York and rented rooms there. As the hotel changed hands over the years, they never left. One of them was Hisako Hasegawa. This is episode seven of our series The Unmarked Graveyard, next week will be our final episode. You can listen to the entire series in the podcast feed.
The X-Men anime has some truly stellar writing for Scott Summers, which is to say, he is a massive dick in this episode and it's totally in-character. Instead of engaging with his anger towards Emma Frost (as well as his attraction towards her), Scott decides to take it out on poor little Hisako in the Danger Room. Meanwhile, Hisako comes to terms with her mutant identity after a pep talk from Ororo and Emma, after which Emma decides to use Xavier's telepathy to prove Scott wrong. Not much actually happens in this episode, but it's still satisfying to see the character drama play out. Emma Frost discovers her diamond powers as a secondary mutation at the outset of the fourth episode of the X-Men anime, and it causes quite a stir. Beast convinces Emma that she must return with him to the Xavier Institute so that he can run tests on her, and Hisako comes along, after getting permission from her parents. Wolverine then fights a mutant on top of the Blackbird, and we have no idea what's going on there. Also we talk about Sonic the Hedgehog characters a lot in this week's episode. That's just the kind of day we were having. Maddy and Ryan invite Todd Harper back onto the show for the introduction of Emma Frost on the X-Men anime. We talk about her outfit, her boobs, the boob window on her outfit, and so much more (as it relates to Emma's boobs). Scott and Logan continue their sexual tension, and Scott tries to convince everybody else that Emma can't be trusted. This works fairly well until Hisako wakes up and makes it clear that Emma is her favorite person ever, at which point the X-Men realize they're all going to have to work together if they want to save Hisako and escape the U-Men. International Astronomy Day is coming up this weekend, so we're talking about Hisako Koyama, an astronomer who hand-drew tens of thousands of daily observations of the sun and its spots. Continuing our Black History Month theme, this week's episode finds us discussing our favorite POC's in anime. Given the racist past of manga and anime, it is good to see more diversity and well-fleshed out characters in modern times. But we do take time to acknowledge the troublesome characters of the past. Our distractions include Euphoria, YuYu Hakusho, Hisako & R. Kelly, and Voltron.

Arranged marriages have been around for centuries, and in The Light Years (Angry Robot, 2020), R.W.W. Greene imagines they’ll be around for centuries more. With the addition of speed-of-light travel, Greene’s character Adem Saddiq can sign a contract with the parents of his wife-to-be before she’s even born, take to space on his family’s freighter and return several months later to find his 26-year-old bride, Hisako Sasaki, waiting for him. Because time dilation allows him to jump 26 years into the future, he can have his bride made-to-order, specifying what degrees and skills she’ll need to play a productive part in the family business. He can even require that she receive genetic modifications to make her a genius. Greene imagines that the same considerations that shaped arranged marriages in the past will shape them in the future. Hisako’s “parents are very poor. They’re refugees,” he explains. “Their only way to get out of this situation is to sign the contract. It's going to allow Adem and his family to pay for Hisako’s schooling, which she wouldn't otherwise have gotten. It’s going to pay for a family apartment, which they wouldn't otherwise have had. And it's going to make sure that she has a life that's going to be far better than her parents’.” Understandably, Hisako sees the situation differently. “If you're the mom and the dad, then you see [the arranged marriage] as something that would be good for your kid. If you’re the kid, your whole life has been stolen from you and preordained and pre-contracted. Like Hisako, you'd be a little pissed about it.” The Light Years is Greene’s first novel. Everyone loves Satan! We tell you about our special three-headed chicken named CerebAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWK and reveal how in Wolverine and the X-Men: Alpha and Omega Logan and Hisako are actually Mario and Luigi! And Venom is Yoshi! We eventually get around to Johnny Storm and he tells us about his high school essay, Reed's new favorite book Calculus Borealis Portal Chicken Egg Part 2, and how he can't read anything with more than five words. Maya Deshmukh delivers one hell of a celestial celebration of Hisako Koyama Maya is an actor and comedian in NYC. She can be seen performing as ""Brown Rice"" with her satirical fake K-pop girl group: AzN POP, as well as co-hosting a monthly ""fashion-comedy"" show called 'Fashion Puhleeze', where comedians break down trends very far from a red carpet. Maya has been featured on Betches, Nick Mom, Funny or Die, and can be seen on season 2 of HBO's High Maintenance. She also works part-time as a general dentist (not a joke). @mayadesh

Sensei Siebuhr talks about the life of Hisako Nakamura (visit the link to see some of Misako's dolls, dolls she sewed with her mouth), a woman so severely handicapped that she brought Helen Keller to tears. Hisako suffered severe frostbite as a child and had to have all her limbs amputated. In spite of Misako's own severe handicaps she met a couple who she felt had endured an even harder life than her own. These are some of Hisako's reflections: "I have been guided by my handicaps. It is my helpless body that has made what I am now and I feel I am saved or spiritually elevated. God gave me my life - I have lived it through with gratitude!"
