Netflix is launching its Milestone Movies collection, starting with classics turning 50 in 2024. The initial wave includes iconic films such as Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles and Jack Nicholson-led Chinatown. This collection aims to address the absence of Old Hollywood movies on Netflix, providing a showcase for Hollywood hits predating 1970. To further celebrate film anniversaries, Netflix plans to add more titles throughout 2024, starting with 1984 releases in April, followed by 1994 titles in June and 2004 films in October. In addition to streaming, Netflix has organized in-person screenings at prominent theatres. The 1974 classics collection offers a diverse range of films, including works by directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese.

The Patrick Coffin Show | Interviews with influencers | Commentary about culture | Tools for transformation

Did you ever wonder why certain movies resonate with audiences all over the world? Why some grab you for two hours in the dark, but then like so much cinematic MSG, you forget these flash-in-the-pans by the time you get to the car – while others hold you in their spell for years? This is the mystery I explore with Father Robert Spitzer, SJ, president of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith in Irvine, CA. Digging into a fascinating section of his book The Soul's Upward Yearning: Clues to Our Transcendent Nature from Experience and Reason, Father Spitzer and I talk about the Power of Myth at work in four of the top movie franchises of Hollywood history: Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and The Chronicles of Narnia films. Turns out, these examples all share certain common elements that invite the viewer (or reader, if the book) into an adventure that forces a choice, a crisis, which leads ultimately a catharsis, or cleansing of the soul. But, as is his wont, the Jesuit scholar goes deeper than the platitudes about nice music and great dialogue. You'll learn about Rudolf Otto and the numinous, Carl Jung and archetypes, Joseph Campbell and the hero's journey, and Mircea Eliade and mythical structure. I know, I know, it this sounds too deep for mere mortals. Give it a chance. Stretching a bit mentally pays handsome dividends, including a new appreciation for what makes great movies great.

Today, we are hearing from one of the cultural influencers of the 90s film industry, and that's non-other but Gary Goldstein, producer of the iconic rom-com, Pretty Woman, starring Richard Gere, and Julia Roberts.A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets... only to fall in love. The film's story centers on down-on-her-luck Hollywood sex worker Vivian Ward, who is hired by Edward Lewis, a wealthy businessman, to be his escort for several business and social functions, and their developing relationship over the course of her week-long stay with him.Pretty Woman was most of your introduction to Gary's work, but mine was Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death. I know. After all these years, the title still makes me chuckle. Years later, I would reference the title to people. And in case you were curious, Gary goes into the movie title origin story in this interview. Gary films have generated well over one billion dollars - consistent box office hits. Pretty Woman, for example, grossed $463.4 million - more than 30 times its budget. After the massive success of Pretty Woman, Gary collaborated once more with his filmmaking partner, writer, Jonathan Lawton to produce the action thriller, Under Seige in 1992. Like Pretty Woman, this too performed successfully at the box office and critically - including an Academy Award nomination. An ex-Navy Seal turned cook is the only person who can stop a group of terrorists when they seize control of a U.S. battleshipAs an undergraduate student, Gary briefly did talent scouting for Columbia Records and is credited for producing music concerts and cabarets for Berkeley, where he studied. After college, he practiced law briefly as a criminal defense attorney in San Francisco. Soon, he lost interest in the legal field and sought out a passion. Film and TV became the apparent choice since he had lots of friends who were in the business he could learn from. A year later, Gary opened up a management company where he put his talent scouting skills and experience to work. There, he worked with writers and directors. By cosmic aligning, he met the young brilliant writer, Jonathan Lawton who wrote the script that became Pretty Woman. In 2013 he authored Conquering Hollywood: The Screenwriter's Blueprint for Career Success, which is a compilation of strategies to help anyone; whether looking to sell a spec script, option a screenplay, land a writing assignment and get hired, attract an agent, or manager of your dreams...or get a producer to take a meeting with you.Gary blessed us with knowledge bombs in this interview, including tips on entrepreneurship and film as a business.Enjoy my conversation with Gary Goldstein.

Michael: Okay. Hello, my name is Michael. Next to me I have Goron from Italy and Win from Vietnam. And today we're going to do discuss movies, and specifically, we're going to discuss about Hollywood movies. Do we like Hollywood movies, what is typical in our own countries and so on? So we're going to start with you Goron. Please.Goron: I will say that generally, I like Hollywood movies. They are -- if I want to be like without thinking anything, you just like lie down on my couch and just eat something and drink and watch a movie, I would choose like a Hollywood movie. They are pretty fun. They are well done. They spend – they have huge budgets for those kinds of movies. Like the last superhero movies now, there's about Ironman, Spiderman, the Avengers, all those kinds of movies. The story or the plot is pretty weak but, you know, you have this like visual effects which the impact on you is strong. And you just think, or at least I think, “Oh wow, how did they do that?”Michael: Yeah. I will give like that example there. You have Avatar. You know, the story is – it's a huge cliche.Goron: Yeah. We heard about this story for…Michael: I knew how the movie would end. But, you know, just going there to see the good 3D effect that movie had, I think it had good 3D. It really immersed you in this whole world. You know, you saw those flying things from the forest.Goron: Yeah, but if you think, it was recorded by a 3D camera because just the camera was a million of dollars.Michael: Yes, but…Goron: The other 3D movies are really crap because everything in post production. So you can tell, “Oh this is 3D?”Michael: Yes.Goron: I mean, it's dark and you have to wear glasses. And if you already have glasses, it's uncomfortable. So it's kind of – it sounds – it seems like a technology that's trying to steal your money.Michael: It was a huge hype, I would say. They were charging more for it, and everyone tried to get on the 3D bandwagon. All the movies went into 3D and it became more normal for there to be 3D movies in cinemas than normal movies. But yeah, I agree totally with you. They went too far. Avatar was made, you know, from the ground up. The idea was to make it in 3D, and they really worked hard to provide a good 3D experience. While those other movies, they're…Goron: I guess…Michael: It's just not the same.Goron: Technology is not ready yet, probably.Michael: And I also agree with you that, you know, there is movies that you watch for the story, which are really good, and you love them. They don't have to be 3D. They don't have to be and you just focus on the story. And then you have the movies, like – you know, even Transformers with lots of explosions, lots of effects. It's entertaining in another way.Win: I mean it depends on how we look at entertainment. I mean, some days you could – I mean, you want to watch something emotional and romantic, and then some days you just want some really easy stuff. But I'm just saying that Hollywood isn't all about the blockbuster and effect-heavy movies. I think Hollywood has made some really good thinking, really good food for thoughts. And it's not that all bad.
