During conversations with serious film collectors, you might hear terms like inter-positive, or first negative, or even OCN, and have no clue to what they actually mean. Don't feel bad because a lot of us are in the same boat. These are some of the many terms used when discussing the preservation and archiving of films, not to mention the amount of work that goes into doing just that. Plus, we're not talking about the latest title coming from the MCU, but ones that were made for pennies a half a century ago, or longer, that got very little distribution, sometimes not even here in the states. But due to the thankless job (that we're hoping to change) of some dedicated cinephiles, they are doing their best to bring those titles back from nearly being a lost film. To help educate us on some of those terms, the processes, and just the sheer craziness of it all, we've asked Vault Manager and Archivist Oscar Becher from Vinegar Syndrome to do just that. While we're not covering specific films for this episode, we're pretty sure you're going to learn a thing or two, maybe be even amazed at hearing some of the processes that go into bringing you that nice and spiffy new Blu-Ray of one of your favorite films. Titles mentioned in this episode: Against the Grain (2023), Blood for Dracula (1974), Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle (1981), Dog Tags (1987), Enter the Clones of Bruce (2023), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), Frankenstein (1931), Grindhouse (2007), Martyrs (2008), New York Ninja (2021), The Night of the Hunter (1955), No Tears for the Damned aka The Las Vegas Strangler (1968), Piranha (1978), The Playgirls and the Vampire (1960), Putney Swope (1969), The Rare Blue Apes of Cannibal Isle (1975), Singin' in the Rain (1952), Star Wars (1977), Thriller: A Cruel Picture (1973), Voodoo Heartbeat aka The Sex Serum of Dr. Blake (1973)

Writer and Senior Vice President at The Black List Kate Hagen joins to discuss Nancy Savoca's 'Household Saints', a generational tale of Italian women in New York and the shifting influences of faith, divinity, and family in their day to day lives. Long unavailable and thought lost to time, an original print of the film was discovered by the filmmakers and has received a new 4k restoration courtesy of Milestone Films. The restoration is screening theatrically all across the country and a proper blu ray release of the film is headed to Kino Lorber in April. We discuss the work of Nancy Savoca, her recent string of restorations, and the position she occupies in the broader conversation about independent film of the 1990s. Then, we examine the film's brilliantly nuanced take on Catholicism and faith - how it manifests in the lives of its central characters, and how the film maintains a compelling balance of fascination and skepticism for the notion of divinity. Finally, we discuss the movie as a triumphant story of what can happen when film preservation wins out, and why there is even more work to be done on the front of preservation now and in the future. Netflix is launching its Milestone Movies collection, starting with classics turning 50 in 2024. The initial wave includes iconic films such as Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles and Jack Nicholson-led Chinatown. This collection aims to address the absence of Old Hollywood movies on Netflix, providing a showcase for Hollywood hits predating 1970. To further celebrate film anniversaries, Netflix plans to add more titles throughout 2024, starting with 1984 releases in April, followed by 1994 titles in June and 2004 films in October. In addition to streaming, Netflix has organized in-person screenings at prominent theatres. The 1974 classics collection offers a diverse range of films, including works by directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese.

The story originates from how an exhibit at Paris' Pompidou Center led to the birth of the Warner Bros. Corporate Archive and the pivotal role played by Leith Adams.  Jeff relates how he was brought onto the team and some of his highlights in working with archival props, costumes, and archival photos.  Along the way, we discuss the role of the Academy's new museum,  the Jack Warner collection, and the partnership with the USC Film Archive.  We also review the evolution of the studio's historic mailroom tour, initiated in the 1940s, and how it has developed into the current studio tour.  And George relates some of the recent requests he has received from the press during the 100th Anniversary Celebration. You may also be interested in our April 4th WB 100th Anniversary Podcast:Celebrating 100 Years of Warner Bros History Through Releases from the Warner Archive - The Early Years Warner Archive Store on Amazon Support the podcast by shopping with our Amazon Affiliate linkMovieZyng Affiliate The BEST place to buy all of your Warner Archive and Boutique DVDs and Blu-raysDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Imagine working on your family history and suddenly you're sidetracked by a bit of information.  That's what happened to my guest, James Castellan. His pursuit of one man's story led to a new understanding of World War I and to his becoming a film scholar on American cinematographers in Germany.  He won a writing award fromThe International Society of Family History Writers and Editors for his article The Memoir of Eleanor Castellan: The Years in the Pacific Northwest, 1910-1919. Edited by James W. Castellan and Norman H. Clark  Pacific Northwest Quarterly Volume 91 Number 1 (Winter 1999/2000)  Along the way, he located a lost film and Together with other scholars they researched the film and reconstructed it. Schuette's WWI bylined dispatches from Berlin. Schuette covered the Central Powers for the Chicago Daily News. He noticed a headline praising Schuette as a great reporter by cinematographer Wilbur H. Durborough just back from Germany where he had filmed On the Firing Line With the Germans.James went looking for the film hoping to buy a DVD and possibly find a few scenes with Schuette. He linked up with two WWI film scholars (Dr. Cooper C. Graham, then recently retired film curator at the Library of Congress, and Ron van Dopperen in the Netherlands. Together they wrote, "American Cinematographers in the Great War, 1914-1918" and did the research that enabled the Library of Congress to reconstruct Durborough's lost film (after two earlier attempts got nowhere). It was featured at the Pordenone annual silent film festival in 1915. (Yes, it does indeed have several scenes with Schuette.)About Maureen Taylor:Maureen is a frequent keynote speaker on photo identification, photograph preservation, and family history at historical and genealogical societies, museums, conferences, libraries, and other organizations across the U.S., London, and Canada.  She's the author of several books and hundreds of articles and her television appearances include The View and The Today Show (where she researched and presented a complete family tree for host Meredith Vieira).  She's been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Better Homes and Gardens, The Boston Globe, Martha Stewart Living, Germany's top newspaper Der Spiegel, American Spirit, and The New York Times. Maureen was recently a spokesperson and photograph expert for MyHeritage.com, an internationally known family history website and also writes guidebooks, scholarly articles and online columns for such media as Smithsonian.com. We also spoke about Muzaffar Ali’s Zoonie; the recent restoration of Kubrick’s masterpiece, 2001: A space Odyssey; the first Bengali silent film, Bilwamangal; and Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old. Dungarpur also touched on his unfinished film, Ittefaq. For which he had assembled an enviable crew, comprising Rahman, Gulzar, Sriram Raghavan, Karan Bali and Sharmishta Roy. It’s mid-October, which means that it’s just about time for Home Movie Day, an annual celebration of amateur films and filmmakers that takes place at the New Haven Museum this Saturday, October 21st, from noon to 4 p.m. On today’s show, host Tom Breen is joined by Yale film archivists Brian Meacham and Molly Wheeler, who are the organizers of the New Haven instance of this international event, as well as by Yale University Art Gallery museum staffer Rachel Mihalko. The four dive into the actual work itself that film and media archivists do: what are the tools and materials they work with, what are the challenges they encounter and the solutions they provide, and what is the broader social value of film and media preservation in the 21st century.
