I am delighted to host Prof. Judith, an expert on the transformative intersections of art and esotericism. Our conversation orbits around the enigmatic and evocative works of Kenneth Anger, an avant-garde filmmaker whose oeuvre plunges into the depths of magical practice and occult symbolism. Kenneth Anger, a central figure in both underground cinema and modern esotericism, has mesmerised audiences with films like "Lucifer Rising" and "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome." His work melds ritualistic elements with visual storytelling, offering an innovative exploration of how art can serve as a conduit for magical intent. About our guest Judith Noble is Professor of Film and the Occult at Arts University Plymouth (UK). She began her career as an artist filmmaker, exhibiting work internationally and worked for over twenty years as a production executive in the film industry, working with directors including Peter Greenaway and Amma Asante. Her current research centres on artists' moving image, Surrealism, the occult and work by women artists, and she has published on filmmakers including Maya Deren, Derek Jarman and Kenneth Anger. En in deze aflevering van Bonte Was Podcast zijn we weer lekker met z'n tweetjes en nemen we het nieuws weer met je door.    One'sy  Yes! Ik heb vooral heel veel kijktips, maar eerst gaan we even bespreken wat er niet zo lekker ging.    Zoë  Ja! Is toch lekker. (lachen beiden)    Zoë  We nemen op op 10 maart, dus het is net Internationale Vrouwendag geweest. Ik moet zeggen, ik krijg er een beetje een baard van. Ja, dat is misschien niet de juiste uitdrukking. (lacht) Of wel. Maar het gekke vind ik dat ik het idee had dat er heel lang wat meer aandacht was voor intersectionaliteit, dus ook de aandacht voor de diversiteit aan vrouwen en eventueel non-binaire personen. Daar zijn de meningen namelijk over verdeeld; daarom zeg ik 'eventueel'. Of je dat nou wel of niet moet betrekken bij een dag als deze, laat ik even aan de luisteraar. Maar ik mis dat een beetje. Ik vind dat het toch weer wat meer gericht raakt op de witte vrouw. Of is dat alleen mijn indruk?    One'sy  Nou ja, ik zag het - ik weet even niet meer bij wie - in de stories voorbijkomen van, is überhaupt die hele dag niet performatief?    Zoë  Sowieso, maar dat geldt natuurlijk voor al die dagen. Dat vind ik er ook ingewikkeld aan. Kijk, er zijn natuurlijk organisaties die echt goed bezig zijn.    One'sy  Zoals WOMEN Inc. natuurlijk.    Zoë  Ja, maar ik bedoel ook gewoon in algemene zin, in het bedrijfsleven en organisaties die proberen rechtvaardiger te zijn voor vrouwen binnen hun organisatie. Dat vind ik het allerbelangrijkste. Maar er zijn natuurlijk ook heel veel plekken die als het vrouwendag is of dag tegen racisme, dan ineens tuigen ze een hele toestand op.    One'sy  De Gay Pride.    Zoë  Vreselijk. Dus die washing daar heb ik ook echt geen boodschap aan. Ik merkte dat ik er zelf een beetje moe van werd. En als we het daar toch over hebben, wat ik echt even aan collega's wil meegeven: collega's in de journalistiek, hou op met woorden als kloof. Er is geen loonkloof; er is een loonschandaal. Net als dat er geen toeslagenaffaire is, maar een toeslagenschandaal. Met schandaal druk je namelijk uit dat het niet iets per ongeluk is wat zo is afgesleten zoals een kloof ontstaat. Nee, het is gewoon moedwillig opgelegd. Dus stop daarmee en noem het ook zo, want taal maakt uit hierin. Nou, die moest ik toch even uit mijn systeempje.    One'sy  Ja. (lacht) Iets anders wat even uit ons systeem moet, is dat de NOS ernstig geschrokken is van alle aantijgingen over grensoverschrijdend gedrag van de afgelopen twintig jaar. Twintig jaar!    Zoë  We moeten een soort bel introduceren, One'sy. Eén van er is weer een casus grensoverschrijdend gedrag in de media. Tingelingeling.     One'sy  We zijn zo geschrokken. (sarcastisch)    Zoë  En dan zijn we toch geschrokken met z'n allen. (sarcastisch) Nee, ik vind dat een ongepaste reactie, als hoofdredactie, want dit gaat om de hoofdredactie van de NOS Sport. Maar het was toen bij Matthijs van Nieuwkerk bij DWDD. Je hoort het steeds. Nou, wat zijn we geschrokken. Ik vind het een ongepaste reactie. Wat jij inderdaad zegt, als er twintig jaar lang, en ongetwijfeld langer, signalen zijn van grensoverschrijdend gedrag waar je dan nu pas achterkomt. Maar laten we het maar even iets duidelijker benoemen: intimidatie, discriminatie, machtsmisbruik. En daar ben je dan nu van geschrokken. Dan heb je gewoon zwaar gefaald. Hou dan liever je smoel of liever nog, zorg voor goed voorbeeldgedrag, zorg voor een veilige werkvloer. Ik kan dat 'geschrokken' niet meer aanhoren. Moeten we het nog over de reactie van Jack van Gelder hebben?    One'sy  Eigenlijk moeten we hem misschien geen aandacht geven.    Zoë  Nee, laat maar even zitten.    One'sy  Next!    Zoë  Het valt allemaal wel mee. Daag! (sarcastisch)    One'sy  Ja, ik bedoelde het toch niet zo. Gewoon een grapje. (sarcastisch) Nou ja, wat geen grapje is een Instagram story die ik doorgestuurd kreeg van een vriendin. Jurino Ignacio, dat is de man achter het succesvolle foodblog www.antilliaans-eten.nl en schrijver van vier kookboeken over die keuken. Hij was benaderd door een productiemaatschappij, die gaat een twintigdelige serie maken over de Caribische keuken voor 24Kitchen. Dus hij denkt: nou, wat tof! Ze besteden aandacht aan Caribisch eten. Maar.. en nu komt het. Degene die vroeg hem of hij één van zijn kookboeken wilde opsturen om als decoratie te gebruiken in hun leuk gestylede keuken.     Zoë  (lacht) Nee, het is niet grappig, maar dit meen je niet.    One'sy   Ja.    Zoë  O, wat gênant.     One'sy  En toen heeft hij dus dat in zijn stories gedeeld. Ik heb zijn stories even gescreenshot en ik wil toch even een deel van zijn frustratie voorlezen: "nee, zonder dollen, dit doet gewoon pijn man. Twaalf jaar ben ik op eigen kracht bezig om de Caribische keuken in de spotlight te zetten. Twaalf jaar zonder vriendjes, zonder shout-outs, no media, niks. En al jaren vraag ik media om een beetje aandacht voor onze cultuur en keuken. Maar niks, want de Antillen waren nooit interessant genoeg. En nu -ik hoop stiekem toch ook een beetje door mijn werk er eindelijk belangstelling bij het publiek is - gaan ze rustig met iemand anders zo'n programma maken met mijn boek als decoratie op de achtergrond.    Zoë  Weet je, soms zeggen mensen wel eens: zo erg is het toch niet of het is toch verbeterd. Maar als je dit dan hoort; het is schaamteloos.     One'sy  In het Surinaams zeg je dikati, lef. Je hebt echt lef dat je dit durft. Het wordt nog leuker, want als klap op de vuurpijl - hij had dit dus gedeeld in zijn stories - kreeg hij de legal department van dat bedrijf op z'n dak omdat hij namen had genoemd. Dus toen heeft hij alles gewoon nog een keer gedeeld, maar dan zonder namen. En ook heel tof, hij heeft besloten om zelf een serie te maken over Caribische keukens en daarvoor was hij op zoek naar allemaal mensen die... dus niet alleen de Antilliaanse keuken, maar ook Surinaams en ga zo maar door en daar gaat hij zelf een serie over maken.    Zoë  Heel goed.    One'sy  Ja, maar ook weer jammer dat hij dat dan moet doen. Dat is dan toch een soort van, als je geen plek aan de tafel krijgt, dan maak je maar je eigen tafel. Maar dan komen die tafels nooit bij elkaar. Ik vind het jammer dat hij dit moet doen.    Zoë  Nee, dat is het ook. Ik word schijtziek van al die tafels.    One'sy  Ja, toch? Op een gegeven moment is die ruimte wel vol.    Zoë  Het is vermoeiend. Ongelofelijk. Ik had er ook nog een. Een vriendin van mij stuurde dat op, Fatoş Ipek-Demir. Zij stuurde een berichtje op, omdat zij hier zelf ook mee te maken heeft. Dat gaat over ouderen met een migratieachtergrond. Zij is heel lang mantelzorger geweest. Haar ouders zijn inmiddels allebei overleden en zij maakt zich daar heel erg hard voor. En daar was, op zich goed, aandacht voor in de Gelderlander, de Gelderlander. Ik herhaal het: de Gelderlander. (lachen beiden)    One'sy  Waar?    Zoë  De Gelderlander. Het is op zich mooi dat ze daar aandacht voor hebben. Dat bijvoorbeeld dementie nog een beetje soms in de taboesfeer zit en dat dat eruit gehaald moet worden. En dan is de kop: Dementie in Tiel. Dat vind ik sowieso al... oké, het zal wel. Niet-westerling is weinig in beeld door taboes. Ja, ik weet het niet. Ga jij vaak naar niet-westerië?    One'sy  Nee, ik weet niet waar dat ligt, Zoë. Maar bij de Gelderlander weten ze dat dus wel.    Zoë  Ja, blijkbaar.    Zoë  En dan staat er een onderschrift onder een foto die erbij staat. "Een groot aantal van de sleutelpersonen"; dit staat dan tussen haakjes. Dat vind ik altijd zo interessant. Waarom staat het tussen haakjes? Maar het zal wel. Een groot aantal van de sleutelpersonen uit Molukse, Marokkaanse en Turkse kringen die dementie bespreekbaar en hulp toegankelijker gaan maken; die staan dan afgebeeld op de foto. Dus qua inhoud, mooi dat ze er aandacht aan besteden, maar lieve mensen van de Gelderlander, dit zijn Nederlanders. Ik verklap een geheimpje. Die hebben misschien wel een migratieachtergrond, maar verwoordt dat even net wat anders. Vriendelijk bedankt, uw landgenoten.    One'sy  Ja, dan hebben verder nog een heleboel leestips. Ik heb nog twee kijktips en een programma waar ik heel erg benieuwd naar ben. We gaan er even in sneltreinvaart door. Een stuk dat jij volgens mij ook heb gelezen in de Volkskrant. Volkskrant-journalist Hassan Bahara schreef een brief aan alle zogenaamde dubbeltjes die zich proberen op te werken tot kwartjes, over wat er over hen geschreven wordt en wat ze kunnen verwachten aan de andere kant van de kloof. Hij beschrijft dan wat je wint als je eenmaal aan de gunstige kant van de maatschappelijke kloof staat en wat je kwijtraakt. En ik vond dit wel een mooi stukje om eventjes te delen: "Je mist een nabij zicht op de mensen die het niet lukt om op te klimmen. Je hebt ze niet meer als buren, klasgenoten, familieleden. Als je ze een spaarzame keer tegenkomt, dan ontbreekt de spontane en wederzijdse identificatie. Je bent, in taal en voorkomen, iemand uit een ander milieu geworden." En ik vroeg me af: herken jij dat een beetje wat hij beschrijft?    Zoë  Nou, deels. Ik vond het ook een heel mooi stuk. Wat bij mij natuurlijk ook een verschil is, ik ben opgegroeid in een bijstandsgezin en wij zijn op gegeven moment verhuisd en toen ben ik naar een hele chique middelbare school gegaan. Daar heb ik wel eens eerder wat over verteld. Dus dan kom je ineens in een heel andere wereld. Daar kan ik nu bewuster over praten dan toen, want op dat moment doe je dat en ben je wel bewust van het feit dat je taalgebruik soms anders is; dat bepaalde dingen anders zijn. Aan de andere kant, en dat is natuurlijk wel een verschil met mij, mijn moeder is Nederlands en die heeft mij ook weer bepaalde dingen meegegeven waar ik in die omgeving wel veel aan had. Dus ik ben van plek ook verhuisd. Ik weet niet precies hoe dat bij Hassan zit, maar dat is denk ik wel een verschil. Wat ik wel merk, is dat je op afstand raakt. Sinds een jaar of twee denk ik: ik heb geen geldzorgen. Dat is voor mij iets heel actiefs wat aanwezig is en daar ga ik soms even letterlijk actief van zitten genieten en denken: ik heb geen geldzorgen; ik heb geen geldzorgen. Er zijn wel veel dingen die ik er ook in herkende, ook hoe je daarop reageert en hoe je daar mee omgaat. Of dat je je heel erg gaat conformeren of juist niet. Ik zit meer aan de juist niet-kant, conformeren aan de vinkjes of hoe je het ook wil noemen. Ik ben niet zo van de term imposter syndrome, maar je houdt dat wel lang vast. En ik zit hardop te denken dat dat ook wel een rol speelt in waarom ik ondernemer ben. Ik werk met heel veel mensen samen. Ik werk voor mezelf, omdat ik dat gevoel wat hij beschrijft over het imposter syndrome wel meer had als ik op redacties werkte bijvoorbeeld, of in vaste omgevingen.    One'sy  En imposter syndrome is dat je het idee hebt dat elk moment iemand je kan betrappen op dat je eigenlijk helemaal niet kan wat je zegt dat je kan, toch?    Zoë  Ja, precies. Ik heb ook soms wel het gevoel dat ik van de dingen moet genieten, want het kan ook anders zijn. Maar mijn punt hiermee is natuurlijk wel, ik heb ook een partner, dat is ook iemand die geld verdient, dus wij zijn tweeverdieners. Je leeft echt een ander leven. Het volgende citaat heb ik vast ook wel ergens in Bonte Was er een keer ingegooid, maar dat is van een van onze geïnterviewden uit De inclusiemarathon, Esther Mollema, die zegt: "Macht maakt je optimistischer en minder empathisch." Dat gaat ook wel over functionele macht, dus als je manager bent ergens. Maar het gaat ook voor mij over dit type macht. Geld is ook macht. Een goed leven leiden is ook macht. Je raakt daarvan op afstand. Halleh Ghorashi beschrijft dat in ons boek ook heel mooi. Zij is hoogleraar aan de VU op diversiteit en integratie. Ze is ooit gevlucht uit Iran, maar dat is voor haar al decennia geleden.    Zoë  Zij zegt ook: "Toen was ik echt - dat is nog weer van een heel andere orde - ik was substantieel onzeker, zeg maar. Ik had geen bestaanszekerheid. Hoe dat voelde, daar sta ik nu echt ver van af." Dat gebruikte zij ook in hoe belangrijk het is om die verhalen te blijven vertellen. Dus steeds ook voor jezelf, ook als je het zelf uit het verleden herkent, omdat je het zelf hebt meegemaakt. Je moet ook niet denken dat je nu ineens maar weet hoe het is allemaal, want je toch heb je afstand genomen van dat gevoel. Wat ik gewoon mooi vond, is dat het een eerlijk stuk was. Hij kaartte wel een aantal van dit soort dingen aan waar wat minder over gesproken wordt. En kijk dat zeg ik er even bij; ik weet niet wat Hassan Bahara daarvan vindt dat ik dat erbij zeg, maar dat vind ik prettig. Wat ik namelijk meestal zie, is dat als er over armoede wordt gesproken of uit een niet-middenklasse omgeving komen, hoe je het wil beschrijven, dan zijn het toch vaak witte mannen met die ervaring die daarover schrijven.    One'sy  Oh ja?    Zoë  Vaak wel, ja. Wat je vaak nog krijgt als het over iemand gaat die ook maar riekt naar allochtoon, dan wordt het of in een racisme frame gezet of dan komt het vanwege je migratieachtergrond dat je arm was. Ik zeg het even heel scherp. Ik vind het heel belangrijk dat als je het over intersectionaliteit hebt dat ook mensen die niet-witte Nederlanders zijn hierover schrijven en dat het dan ook over armoede gaat en dus niet over die migratieachtergrond. Terwijl dat ook natuurlijk weer in hoe er naar je gekeken wordt rollen kan spelen en ook hoe je eruit kan komen. Ja, ik loop even helemaal leeg.    One'sy  Helemaal prima. Daarom stelde ik die vraag natuurlijk.    Zoë  Het is een mooi stuk en ik ben blij dat dit soort eerlijke stukken er zijn en dat we het daarover hebben. En het was voor een deel echt herkenbaar.    One'sy  Ik zat een beetje bij mezelf na te denken of ik dat herkende, maar volgens mij heb ik in mijn buurt genoeg binding met allerlei soorten mensen. Maar ik denk wel dat ik inderdaad minder geldzorgen heb dan mijn ouders. Al hebben ze dat nooit zo aan ons gecommuniceerd, hoor. Wij waren meer arbeidersklasse denk ik dan de middenklasse. Alhoewel, volgens mij verdiende mijn vader net honderd gulden te veel om in het ziekenfonds te zitten.    Zoë  O ja, daar heb je weinig aan dan.    One'sy  Ja, precies. Het was niet zo dat ik letterlijk me kon herkennen in wat hij zei, maar ik vond het zo'n mooi stuk dat ik dacht: ik weet zeker dat er meer mensen zijn die zich hier wel in herkennen, dus we gaan het delen in de shownotes. Iets waar ik me wel een beetje in kon herkennen, of tenminste waarin ik me hoop te herkennen, is de serie Nieuwe blik terug van de NTR waarin artiest Orville Breeveld in zes afleveringen onbekende muzikanten, beeldhouwers en filosofen van kleur uit de Europese geschiedenis belicht. De eerste aflevering gaat, bijvoorbeeld over de Zwarte Joseph Bologne. Dat is een man van wie volgens mij de vader van adel en een plantage-eigenaar  was. Zijn moeder kwam van Guadeloupe. Die vader heeft hem toen vanuit Guadeloupe naar Parijs gestuurd als tiener. Daar is hij gaan schermen en schermkampioen geworden op zijn zeventiende. Hij was de beste van heel Parijs en is dus ook componist geweest, één van de helden van Mozart en hij was aanvoerder van een compleet zwart leger ten tijde van de Franse Revolutie. Heb jij ooit van Joseph Bologne gehoord?    Zoë  Ik heb er wel eens van gehoord.    One'sy   Nee, Zoë. Hoe dan? Hoe kan dat?    Zoë  (lacht) Ik had ook hierover gelezen. Wat er gewoon nog heel erg mist in onze historie is aandacht voor mensen, voor belangrijke historische figuren die niet tot de norm behoren. En ik vind het heel erg mooi, want het is namelijk ook een hele krachtige en positieve manier van belichten. Ik kijk er ook ontzettend naar uit.    One'sy  Ik had Orville er dus over gesproken in mijn radioprogramma op Sublime en hij vertelde best wel veel interessante dingen. En een ding wat me echt is bijgebleven, is dat hij zei dat het maken van Nieuwe blik terug voor hem echt een eyeopener was. Hij zei: ‘Wij zijn heel Amerikaans georiënteerd, maar Europa heeft een eigen verhaal wat ontdekt moet worden. We moeten dus niet alleen maar kijken naar Amerikaanse voorbeelden.' En toen dacht ik: ja, natuurlijk, want als je denkt aan zwarte helden, dan kom je misschien uit bij Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, weet ik veel, maar die hebben we dus gewoon in Europa. Dat vond ik wel echt een mooi gegeven.    Zoë  O, wat goed zeg. Excuses, even een klein beetje reclame voor De inclusiemarathon, maar ik moet hier aan denken omdat The Inclusion Marathon is uitgekomen. Elodie Kona, onze research-assistent van Kauthar Bouchallikht en mij van De inclusiemarathon, is ook vertaalster. Fantastisch. Zij heeft het boek ook samengevat en vertaald, dus het is nu ook in het Engels uitgekomen.    One'sy  Congratulations!    Zoë  Thank you very much. Wij hadden het ook daarover en hoe belangrijk het ook is. Als het gaat over theoriegesprekken en ideeën rond diversiteit, inclusie en gelijkwaardigheid, dan is het heel erg Angelsaksisch-gericht en dan voornamelijk Amerika. Als het over kolonialisme of imperialisme gaat, zijn er echt vergelijkingen ook met bijvoorbeeld het Britse rijk van vroeger, maar er zijn ook veel verschillen. Het is dus erg belangrijk om onze eigen taal en onze eigen onderzoeken en ideeën hierover te ontwikkelen, want anders plakken we toch de hele tijd dingen vanuit Amerika - de Verenigde Staten moet ik zeggen - plakken we dan op dingen die hier gaande zijn en dan past het net niet.    One'sy  Ja, en dan kunnen mensen dat ook weer als verwijt gebruiken om het te diskwalificeren.    Zoë  Ja, vreselijk.    One'sy  Er staan al drie afleveringen online en de laatste wordt uitgezonden op zondag 26 maart om vijf voor half acht op NPO 2. Ik word hier niet voor betaald, maar die krijg je gewoon gratis mee als kijktip. En dan een serie die jij ook voorbij had zien komen, hè? Ik kan het niet zeggen.    Zoë  Girls girls girls.    One'sy  Ik heb een te platte L (letter). Ja, sorry. Ik had op Internationale Vrouwendag gebeld met journalist en filmmaker Soulaima El Khaldi. Zij heeft dus een nieuwe reeks gemaakt van dat programma dat 25 jaar geleden op tv was. Heb jij het destijds gezien?    Zoë  Nee. Even kijken. Hoe oud ben ik nu? Ik was toen zestien. Dat kan ik me echt niet meer heugen.    One'sy  Ik dus nog echt wel.    Zoë  O, wat goed!    One'sy  Ja, ik weet het nog, want daar zat Ebru Umar ook in… LAAT STILTE VALLEN… En Marjorie Boston, Amma Asante. Dat was dus een serie waarin vrouwen van verschillende afkomsten open vertelden over hun leven, waar ze tegenaan liepen, wat hun dromen waren, noem het maar op. Soulaima heeft vier van die vrouwen na al die jaren weer opgezocht, heeft met ze teruggeblikt op toen en liet ze vertellen hoe ze nu in het leven staan. Ik vind het altijd interessant om een 'hoe gaat het nu met je' of zo te zien. En ik vond het ook wel mooi om te zien welke nieuwe of veranderde inzichten die dames hebben, maar het is ook een beetje verdrietig.    Zoë  Hoe dat?    One'sy  Nou ja, er is eigenlijk niet zo veel ten goede veranderd. Ze zijn, als je het kan samenvatten, cynischer geworden over waar we staan. Amma heeft gezegd dat ze gesprekken met haar dochters voert. Eerst dacht ze van, ik ga het gewoon niet met ze hebben over racisme. Je ziet ook in die aflevering dat ze in Badhoevedorp wonen, die dochters zitten op hockey en ze wil die meiden meegeven dat ze alles kunnen wat andere kinderen ook kunnen. Maar ze dacht: ik moet het toch met ze hebben over dat zij zich misschien wel als Nederlander zien, maar dat andere kinderen of andere mensen dat niet zo ervaren. Ze vond het heel pijnlijk om te moeten beseffen dat dat een gesprek is dat ze met haar kinderen moet hebben.    Zoë  Ik kan niet zeggen dat het me heel erg verbaast. Het is natuurlijk wel triest. Voor een deel denk ik ook wel dat er misschien toen, maar dan doe ik misschien een te grote uitspraak, meer naïviteit was. Als je hebt al 25 jaar geleden, dan heb je het dus over 1998. We hadden nog niet superveel social media. Ik denk dat er toen nog wel wat meer een idee was van, als je maar hard genoeg werkt, zoiets.    One'sy  Amma zegt dat ook in die aflevering: "Vroeger werd ik binnengehaald als 'o, leuk die enige vrouw van kleur die willen we er graag bij hebben' en nu wordt zijn gezien als bedreiging van, "o, jee die komt vast hier de boel veranderen." Er wordt dus een beetje anders gekeken naar haar als zwarte vrouw. Ik vond haar wel een beetje gedesillusioneerd. Er zit trouwens ook een heel mooi gesprek met Sylvana in, over wat Sylvana durft, wat zij ook wilde, maar niet heeft gedurfd.    Zoë  Wat ik een beetje hoop, want ik ben toch altijd dan van het optimisme, is dat we in een overgangsfase zitten voor de generaties die nu opgroeien voor een deel of voor ons natuurlijk. Want het heeft ook te maken met dat de wereld veel bewuster is geworden, dus ook mensen die hier nog veel minder bewust over waren. Een deel daarvan voelt zich erdoor bedreigd; wat jij net beschrijft. Die bewustwording heb je wel nodig om weer verder te komen, maar dat maakt het niet makkelijker voor de mensen die er nu inzitten.    One'sy   25 jaar wachten. Wie heeft tijd?    Zoë  Ja, vreselijk. Wat ik er trouwens nog bij wil zeggen, ik heb het nog niet gekeken, maar ik las er ook weer een mooi stuk over op Lilith Magazine. Dat hebben we al vaker genoemd, maar als je het nog niet kent, lees het. Zij hadden laatst ook een heel goed stuk over PMDD. Nou ben ik even precies vergeten waar de afkorting voor staat, maar dat is een ergere vorm van PMS, premenstrueel syndroom, en over dat daar toch veel vrouwen mee kampen en dat hebben ze ook weer op een heel mooi manier beschreven. Dus als je Lilith Magazine nog niet volgt, doe dat dan want die hebben mooie stukken.    One'sy  Ja, nog één kijktip dan over een serie waar ik benieuwd naar ben die nog niet uit is. Het is een serie van AVROTROS en die heet Katwalk. Ik weet niet of je daar van gehoord hebt?    Zoë  Nee!    One'sy  Die wordt vanaf 13 maart uitgezonden op het YouTube-kanaal van NPO 3. Het is volgens mij dus voor jongeren, dus wij zijn niet helemaal de doelgroep.    Zoë  Oudere jongeren. Wat was dat ook weer van Van Kooten en De Bie? Nee, dat waren de senioren. (lacht)    One'sy  Dat zijn wij. De serie gaat over Khadija (Kat) die mee wil doen aan een modellenwedstrijd, maar ze wordt afgewezen omdat ze niet past in het gezochte profiel, tussen haakjes. Daarna meldt ze zich opnieuw aan met een Nederlandse nepnaam en een gefotoshopte foto waarin ze een volle bos haar heeft in plaats van een hijab. En natuurlijk wordt ze dan wel geselecteerd en dan besluit ze dat avontuur aan te gaan met hoofddoek. Ik heb die trailer gezien en dat zag er wel veelbelovend uit, dus ik ben heel erg benieuwd.    Zoë  Leuk! Ik ook. Even kijken. We hebben het vaker natuurlijk dat we een column van Hassnae Bouazza tippen. Ze had laatst ook weer een sterke column in NRC over polarisatie en ook wanneer we iets polariserend vinden, wie we polariserend noemen. En daarbij valt het natuurlijk op dat we sommige mensen veel eerder polariserend vinden dan andere mensen. Voor mij is het echt een verademing om die columns van Hassnae steeds in NRC te lezen. Alleen, ze vervangt nu iemand en als er iemand luistert die bij NRC aan de touwtjes trekt, ik weet niet of ze het wil, maar please, ik zou zo graag willen dat Hassnae Bouazza een vaste column zou hebben, want we hebben het gewoon heel hard nodig. Ze kan het zo goed opschrijven altijd en er zijn veel mensen die daar denk ik heel erg blij mee zijn. Dat wou ik gewoon tussendoor nog even vermelden.    One'sy  Ja, we hebben ook een andere column van Hassnae op onze Twitter gedeeld @bontewaspodcast waarin ze het ook heeft over hoe gewoon extreemrechts is geworden. En daarover gesproken, ik las nog een opiniestuk van journalist Manja Ressler op Villamedia.nl. De algemeen secretaris van de Nederlandse Vereniging van Journalisten, Thomas Bruning, zat in februari van dit jaar bij een uitzending van Ongehoord Nederland samen met Thierry Baudet en, zoals deze dame zelf zegt, de ongekroonde koning van de wappies, Max von Kreyfelt. Ik heb geen idee wie die beste man is, want blijkbaar verkeren we in andere bubbels. Maar zij vroeg zich af: wat bezielt hem om met deze anti-democraat in gesprek te gaan? Dat moeten we niet willen als journalisten of als media zijnde. Zij beschrijft ook heel mooi hoe er dan na Fortuyn een soort van angst was om voor linkse wokies uitgemaakt te worden en iedereen maar een stem gegeven moest worden. Daarmee is eigenlijk dat hele extreemrechtse gewoon de media ingeslopen en doen we nu alsof het normaal is dat we dit soort lieden een platform moeten geven.    Zoë  Ik vind dit heel erg hoor. Ik ben lid van de NVJ en als ik dit lees denk ik: ik ga het opzeggen. Ik begrijp wat jij nu beschrijft, zeg maar wat Manja beschrijft. Ik heb daar ook middenin gezeten toen ik bij AT5 bijvoorbeeld werkte. Ik zat daar van 2005-2006 tot 2010 en dat was de tijd dat Geert Wilders ook opkwam. Op gegeven moment is er wel een corrigerend mechanisme op gang gekomen, maar alles wat die man deed was nieuws. Hij kreeg enorm veel aandacht en had echt een fantastische mediamachine; hoe die dat voor elkaar kreeg. Daar hebben we in de samenleving, als journalisten mogen we onszelf dat aanrekenen, enorme schade mee aangericht. En dat komt ook weer uit het van ons journalisten stupide idee voort dat iedereen die niet tot een bepaalde klasse behoort rechts is en dan meteen ook extreem rechts. Waarom denken wij dat? Omdat de journalistieke groep vooral bestaat uit mensen die uit middenklasse en hoger komen. Ik loop weer even leeg. Dit weten we. Gelukkig zijn er op een gegeven moment wel wat corrigerende mechanismen opgetreden. Dat er iets minder angst was om de zogenaamde rechtse stemmer niet te bedienen, want die wordt al jaren echt reusachtig bediend en dit zijn extreemrechtse ondemocratische mensen. Dat is echt wat anders.    One'sy  Nou ja, zijn verweer was: zolang Ongehoord Nederland deel uitmaakt van het omroepbestel moeten we deze omroep beschouwen als een omroep die ondanks onze contraire visie op hun denkbeelden en aanpak een weerwoord verdient. Het feit dat we daarbij live konden deelnemen aan het gesprek was voor ons ook van belang, zodat we zeker wisten dat we kritiek op hun werkwijze en informatie ook zouden kunnen benoemen. Maar dan betoogt Manja dat daar in de uitzending weinig van terechtkwam, want hij werd heel snel onderbroken. Alles wat hij zei over de functie van journalistiek in een democratie viel op stokdove oren.    Zoë  Hij had nul functie.    One'sy  Je bevestigt alleen maar wat zij denken of tenminste wat hun achterban ook denkt van: nou ja, er zit inderdaad hier weer iemand van de mainstream media en die verkondigt alleen maar wat wij al weten, dus het heeft echt nul zin.    Zoë  Nee, je wordt ingezet als een soort poppetje waar ze leuk op kunnen hakken.    One'sy  Ja, dat is heel gevaarlijk en jammer.     Zoë  Dat is niet helemaal een gezellige afsluiter.    One'sy  Nee, eigenlijk niet. O, Ik heb een andere Villamedia tip. Ze hebben een podcast die heet Wederhoor. In de eerste aflevering gaan een voorlichter en een journalist met elkaar in gesprek over die gespannen relatie. Dat is dan een journalist die ooit volgens mij voor de rechter heeft gestaan, omdat hij werkte voor Zembla en hij wilde bij een ziekenhuis misstanden aan de kaak stellen of iets. Dat werd heel erg tegengewerkt door de voorlichtingsafdeling. Hij ging dus nu in gesprek met iemand die zelf journalist is geweest en nu voorlichter is.    Zoë  Dat gebeurt vaak, hè. Een aantal oud collega's van mij zijn nu voorlichter. Ik weet het niet.    One'sy  Maar ik vond dat een heel interessante aflevering.    Zoë  Super interessant.    One'sy  Dat is nog een luistertipje.    Zoë  Dat is een goeie tip. Er gaat van alles door me heen, maar we laten het even lekker zitten. Anne's composition credits include Ricky Gervais' DEREK (Netflix) and BAFTA-winning director Amma Asante's feature film WHERE HANDS TOUCH, for which Anne was nominated for ‘Discovery of the Year' at the 2019 World Soundtrack Awards. Anne recently composed the music for the 007 No time to Die x Nokia spot and a star-studded Coronavirus vaccine advert that featured Sir Lenny Henry! Volk van Nederland, het is bijna te laat – maar nog niet heelemaal!’ Deze krachtige uitroep deed de Amsterdamse predikant Jan Koopmans in de herfst van 1940. In zijn illegale pamflet Bijna te laat! riep hij zijn landgenoten op in verzet te komen tegen anti-Joodse maatregelen van de Duitse bezetter. Jan Koopmans was van 1943 tot 1945 predikant van de Noorderkerk. In 2020 is het 75 jaar geleden dat hij, kort voor het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, overleed als gevolg van een verdwaalde kogel. In de Noorderkerk staan we dit jaar stil bij de erfenis van deze moedige en visionaire predikant. Op donderdag 29 oktober 2020 hielden we een herdenking over de vraag: wie redt onze vrijheid vandaag? Daarbij laten we ons inspireren door het verhaal van Koopmans: hoe zou hij deze vraag beantwoord hebben in de context van huidige technologische ontwikkelingen van big data? Hoe beoordelen we de digitale bedreiging van onze vrijheid en humaniteit en hoe kunnen we, zoals Koopmans probeerde in zijn tijd, een onzichtbare dreiging zichtbaar maken? Tijdens de bijeenkomst hebben Amma Asante (politica en voorzitter Landelijke Cliëntenraad), Hanneke Gelderblom (oud-senator en actief in overleg Joden, christenen, moslims), Niels den Hertog (theoloog, gepromoveerd op Koopmans’ publieke spreken) en Lonneke van der Velden (filosoof, onderzoeker Datactive (UvA) en voorzitter Bits of Freedom) vanuit verschillende invalshoeken op het thema gereflecteerd, gevolgd door discussie en gesprek. Slay in your lane is an absolute must-read, from education to work to dating, this inspirational, honest and provocative book recognises and celebrates the strides black women have already made, while providing practical advice for those who want to do the same and forge a better, visible future.The book is filled with stories from both Elizabeth and Yomi’s own lives, as well as interviews from dozens of the most successful black women in Britain – including BAFTA Award-winning director Amma Asante, British Vogue publisher Vanessa Kingori, Karen Blackett OBE CEO of Group M and Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis. Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook describes the book as “a gift for anyone who wants to better understand what Black women and girls are up against – and the tremendous resources they draw upon as they make their way in the world” Yomi is a busy lady. Alongside her book, she also writes for the Observer and The Independent and hosts her own podcast with Elizabeth. So, as you can imagine, during our conversation we cover a lot.Yomi opens up about the importance of putting herself first and taking a year out of Uni due to depression. We also discuss how during that same year she struggled to find work placements so instead decided to create her own magazine. It was through this significant year that she found her passion as a journalist. Finally, she gives some really inspirational and practical advice on how she launched her book ‘Slay in your lane’.I’m not going to reveal too much about our conversation as it is much better if you hear it straight from Yomi.

With Belle, and a United Kingdom under her belt, Amma Asante returns with her latest project Where Hands Touch, which tells the overlooked story of the mixed children born during the Nazi regime. Amma Asante started out in front of the screen in the UK cult kids' series Grange Hill. Quickly realising that being an actress wasn't her forte, Asante forged a career behind the camera.  Taking up space in a position usually reserved for men, Asante is one of the very few women directors who dare to challenge the norm. The opera singer Elizabeth Llewellyn meets the film director and screenwriter Amma Asante. Elizabeth Llewellyn first won wide critical acclaim in 2010, when she starred in Jonathan Miller’s production of La Bohème at English National Opera. Her path to success was unconventional: she gave up singing at the age of 22, and worked as a project manager for an IT company for a decade before gradually returning to music. She has now performed in opera houses around the world, including leading roles in Tosca, Madame Butterfly, and Porgy and Bess. Amma Asante appeared in Grange Hill as a teenager, and moved on to writing and directing. In 2004 she won the best newcomer BAFTA for her film A Way of Life. She went on to direct Belle, which was inspired by a portrait of Dido Elizabeth Belle, a girl born into slavery, but brought up in the house of a British lord. We kick off this episode of #BTLRadioShow with our exclusive interview with writer/director AMMA ASANTE who talks about her latest film, the emotionally powerful WHERE HANDS TOUCH. Set in 1944 Germany, Asante explores an oft-overlooked part of World War II history – the Rhineland Bastards, the name given by the Nazis to those of mixed race. Another part of Hitler's "cleansing", Asante sets the stage and brings us into time and place with a love story between a young girl of mixed parents named Leyna, and Lutz, one of the exuberant Nazi Youth and son of a famed member of the Nazi military regime. Listen as Asante talks about her approach to telling this story from the visual immersion to the emotional resonance, the contemporary relevance of the film today, and shooting at a former concentration camp. Moving from 1944 Germany to present-day China, Peabody Award winner and filmmaker LEON LEE takes us deep into the story of Sun Yi, a man held prisoner in the Masanjia Labor Camp, with his powerhouse documentary, LETTER FROM MASANJIA. Hiding a note inside a Halloween decoration (a headstone, no less) made in the prison for shipment to the United States for sale in a K-Mart store, Sun Yi begged the finder of the note to contact human rights organizations and alert them to the abuse and torture at Masanjia. Luckily for Sun Yi, in 2012 Julie Keith of Oregon opened up the Halloween decorations she had purchased two-years earlier and found the note. Lee, an authority on China, takes us down the rabbit hole and into Sun Yi's experiences and persecution for his involvement with Falun Gong, a spiritual group founded on the moral philosophies of truth, compassion and tolerance. Filmmakers will be amazed to learn of the lengths Lee had to go into order to make this film as he is not allowed to enter China, and Sun Yi, on his release from Masanjia could not leave the country. A fascinating conversation. And then we welcome acclaimed writer/director and President of Uniglobe Entertainment, NAMRATA SINGH GUJRAL, talking about her new film 5 WEDDINGS! The writer Mike White based the Doug's character on the dentist that shot and killed Cecil the lion back in 2015. Beatriz is an eternal empath and rallies hard against the consciousless Doug who has no trouble sleeping at night despite leaving destitution in his wake. Beatriz at Dinner is a sublime chamber piece that is superbly helmed by Miguel Arteta and brought to life by the flawless casting.   The Big Sick Dir: Michael Showalter Written for Screen by: Emily V Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani Starring: Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Adeel Akhtar, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX3Regj6nAg   The Big Sick "dramadises" the real life story of Emily V Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani. During their time of courtship Emily falls so ill that she had to be placed into a medically induced coma to help fight the infection and illness. The Big Sick focuses on their story during this difficult time as well as the trials and tribulations between Kumail and his own parents and getting to know and love Emily's parents. These three story threads are excellently played out and endearing. There is a lot of love for the writing of Kumail and Emily and the direction from Michael Showalter works perfectly with them. I cannot think of many comedies that should be longer than 90 minutes long and The Big Sick, with a running time of around two hours, is not one of them. That said it is a fantastic and heartfelt moden rom-com that you should make an effort to see.   Bitch Dir: Marianna Palka Written for Screen by: Marianna Palka Starring: Marianna Palka, Jason Ritter, Jaime King https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZVA2f_jtxQ   When a film starts off with an attempted suicide, as "Bitch" does, you know you're not going to be in for a smooth ride. The suicide attempt made by Marianna Palka's character is a vain attempt to resolve the problems of living with a cheating husband. Her husband, played by Jason Ritter, is so pathetic that he doesn't know where his kids go to school or even know how to start the car to take them there. The suicide is unsuccessful, however, the drastic measures are taken that results in her separation from the family as we know it. What follows is the family coming to terms with the type of loss that has never been committed to screen.     Bushwick Dir: Cary Munion, Jonathon Milott Written for Screen by: Nick Damici, Graham Reznick Starring: Dave Bautista, Brittany Snow, Angelic Zambrana https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ddl6sHa48Zk A girlfriend, Lucy (Brittany Snow) and boyfriend couple arrive in Bushwick, an area of Brooklyn, with the intention of introducing him to her family. As they walk out of the underground and eerie silence is replaced by the sound of gunfire and the guy is soon firebombed. He dies but there is no time for tears as all hell has broken loose and she is soon having to dodge sniper fire and run for safety. Lucy finds assistance in Stupe (Dave Bautista), an ex-marine turned janitor, and they work together to find the scattered pieces of her family in the Bushwick neighbourhood and onto safety. Bushwick is all shot on Steadicam and in as real time as possible, trying to mimic film showing the passage of time in a single take. The concept is great and the film is a fun one with a few sections of improvised dialogue that are cringe inducing, but the fast pace and vicscera almost make that forgiveable!   Chasing Coral Dir: Jeff Orlowski Starring: Richard Vevers, Zack Rago, Chloe Sevigny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W4PfXCKBPc Chasing Coral depicts the drastic dying out of the coral reefs around the globe. We see over the space of 2 months or less the vibrant coral turning white and then dying out. This is a result of global warming that has caused the sea temperatures to increase by 2-3 degrees. This doesn't sound like much but is enough to cause the coral and the infrastructure they support to die out. The documentary works in three parts, the environmental, technological and the character driven. All three impress and combine into a beautiful tour-de-force that is as impressive as it is depressing... Chasing Coral is coming to Netflix if it isn't there by the time you read this lowdown. Please do try and see this on the big screen if you can. Some of the visuals are eye-popping!     Crown Heights Dir: Matt Ruskin Written for Screen by: Matt Ruskin Starring: Lakeith Stanfield, Nnamdi Asomuhga, Natalie Paul The story behind Crown Heights is a true one and was initially popularised on in a Podcast episode "DIY" of This American Life. Lakeith Stanfield stars as Colin Warner, a man convicted of life imprisonment for a murder he did not commit. The ordeal that he goes through is heinous especially given the amount of evidence in his favour. It follows the story of Colin on "the inside" and his best friend Chris who keeps on rallying for him "on the outside" following setback after knockback after setback. It's great stuff and the story is beyond unfortunate, however, one has to wonder if would have been better served as a documentary. We have to concede that this story will receive a greater audience as a biopic and that can only be a great thing! Dina Dir: Dan Sickles, Antonio Santini Starring: Dina Buno, Scott Levin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrVqMydFvHg The documentary "Dina" follows Dina Buno and her fiance Scott as they prepare for their wedding and their life together. That concept is not typical fare for a documentary until you add the fact that both Dina and Scott both are both on the autistic spectrum and Dina's life has been traumatic including her previous marriage ended in tragedy. The pairing of Scott and Dina is endearing and fraught with intrinsic difficulties. It's clear that they love each other but the way that this manifests physically is often difficult to bear. Scott is whilst being affectionate finds physical contact difficult, whilst Dina, a "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" is forthright, honest and craves physical passion.   A Ghost Story Dir: David Lowery Written for Screen by: David Lowery Starring: Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, Will Oldham https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxLHP2IpBXw "A Ghost Story" is beautiful, ethereal, thought provoking and haunting (pun intended) film that provoked a lot of discussion after the screening. The setup follows a young couple played by Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara just before he is involved in a fatal car accident. Casey comes back as "Ghost Costume 101" in the form of a sheet with eye-holes cut out after referring to "Pac-man" as a guide for sewing pattern. We then follow the ghost as he is seemingly bound to the house where he used to live and experiences life carrying on around him. A Ghost Story is presented in a square image with a subdued filter, almost as if shot with a bespoke Instagram filter. This presentation when coupled with the sublime score and track "I Get Overwhelmed" by Dark Rooms makes for a film that will nest in your conciousness for a long time after you first watch it.   Icarus Dir: Bryan Fogel Starring: Bryan Fogel   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQNRm6NLTSI&t=60s   The setup for Icarus is a fascinating one. Bryan is an accomplished amateur cyclist who came 14th in the Alpine Haute Route in 2014, which is an amazing accomplishment. Bryan, who had been let down by his cycling hero Lance Armstrong, noted that in spite of the systematic doping program that Lance Armstrong had never failed a drugs test. Fogel set out to prove that it was relatively easy to evade the doping systems by participating in his own program with the intent of exposing the scams and methods to a wider audience. The program that Bryan undergoes is stringent and overseen by the Director of the Russian Anti-Doping Lab, Grigory Rodchenkov. We are initially disappointed that this promising premise is not fully realised, but what it makes way for is a mindblowing crime caper that involves KGB, Putin, The Olympics and death threats and leaves you paranoid as you leave the cinema. Icarus will be available on Netflix later this year and is must - see documentary.   The Incredible Jessica James Dir: Jim Strouse Written for Screen by: Jim Strouse Starring: Jessica Williams, Chris O'Dowd, Lakeith Stanfield, Noel Wells https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFKwg3V85Ng The Incredible Jessica James was written By Jim Strause specifically for Jessica Williams after he had worked with her on previous film projects. In the film, Jessica is a theatre playwright, performer, teacher and lover who is struggling to come to terms with her perception of success is whilst at the same time trying to deal with the break-up of a relationship and the start of a new one. Jessica Williams heads up the cast alongside Chris O'Dowd Lakeith Stanfield and Noel Wells in a film that has been expertly crafted for her. The Incredible Jessica James is endearing without being mawkish and comes sets up Jessica's character as outgoing without ever overstepping the mark. "The Incredible Jessica James" is a hilarious film that with is engaging all the way through.   Marjorie Prime Dir: Michael Almereyda Written for Screen by: Michael Almereyda Starring: Jon Hamm, Geena Davis, Lois Smith, Tim Robbins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMGm6A7XHjo Marjorie Prime is the film adaptation of a stage play of the same name. In this world a "Prime" is a holographic representation of a real-world person that has previously died. There are a few primes in this film the first being depicted by Jon Hamm who Is employed to keep Marjorie, the titular character, company as she descends into older age and increasing dementia. We've seen similarly themed films such as with "Robot and Frank", "Her" and themes are shown in TV series Black Mirror and represents the move toward the Technical Singularity where people's memories and personality live way beyond the constrains of their physical form. It is evident that Marjorie Prime is based on a stage play in the form that the film takes. This, however, Is the perfect setting for actors of the calibre of Lois Smith, Jon Hamm, Tim Robbins and of course Geena Davies.     Walking Out Dir: Alex Smith and Andrew Smith Written for Screen by: Alex Smith and Andrew Smith Starring: Matt Bomer, Josh Wiggins, Bill Pullman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ic6A6ztJldA A shorthand to understanding the film "Walking Out" would be Refer to it as a more personalised version of The Revenant. In Walking Out we deal with threats from bears and cold weather, But that is where the parallels end. The story of walking out reunites a father and son, Cal and David, who are typically estranged by both distance and life experiences. The "city mouse" son joins his "Country mouse" father shortly after his 14th birthday with the aim of reconnecting and to kill a moose. The story starts with the initial disappointment from Cal's point of view as he sees David's reliance on modern technology turns into pride as his son strives to save them. Walking out is breathtakingly beautiful and benefits from the constraints of limited budget in the way you can see the epic beauty of real landscape and weather that would be staged larger scale films.   Wilson Dir: Craig Johnson Written for Screen by: Daniel Clowes Starring: Woody Harrelson, Laura Dern, Judy Greer   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKHFZumOS94 Wilson is adapted from the graphic novel and depicts Woody Harrelson playing the titular Wilson. We are initially introduced to a lonely but happily cranky Wilson who after a family bereavement seeks to modify life and re-connect with his estranged wife. In this process of reconnecting Wilson learns that he is actually a father and sets out to get to know his daughter and become part of her life. Wilson's grumpy demeanour is as entertaining for the viewer as it is irritating for the other characters in the film but this slowly ebbs away as his good nature breaks through. Även kulturredaktionens Nina Asarnoj kommer till studion för att tala om andra aktuella verk i den svarta filmvågen Vi har också träffat regissören Amma Asante som gjort den bioaktuella filmen "A United Kingdom", som handlar om kärleken mellan en svart kronprins och en vit brittisk medborgare. En kärlekshistoria som fick stora politiska konsekvenser, och så småningom ledde till födelsen av den självständiga nationen Botswana. This week I talk to Marica Petrey who is a writer, actor, and director as well as Founder and one of the Artistic Directors of Radix Troupe which is an experimental theater troupe based out of Berkeley, California. She is a freelance journalist and videographer with California Magazine. She is cellist and member of Mad Noise, a bluesy funk, soul, punk band that has traveled to Africa through the State Department's American Music Abroad Program. She is a dancer and a singer and just recently started another band called Girl Swallows Nightingale. We first talk about Zoey and the Wind-Up Boy and how Radix Troupe creates projects together. Then we talk about the sound and art direction of Zoey and the Wind Up Boy. Finally we'll talk about how Marica got into performing arts and an opportunity she recently had to shadow acclaimed director, Amma Asante.

The most high profile black female director working today, Amma Asante made her directorial debut in 2004 with, A Way of Life, winning her 17 international awards including a BAFTA for ‘Outstanding Debut by a British Filmmaker’. This fascinating story of a mixed-race aristocratic woman living in 18th-century England is highly entertaining, even if it's not totally faithful to the historical record. Our discussion ranges from the movie itself, to the representation of non-white ethnicities in history and in historical costume films. We also analyze the costumes themselves, which are highly accurate but about 20 years too early.
