In Episode 231, Samantha Gordon and Simon Skinner discussed the orchestration framework they developed to help our clients decipher a somewhat overused term in the industry. It was a great discussion, and if you missed it, I recommend you give it a listen. We covered a lot of ground in that episode that sets up this conversation with John Lunn, CEO and Founder of Gr4vy. While preparing for this podcast, John observed that “every merchant has an orchestration platform; they just don't call it that.” That struck a chord as incredibly insightful. Merchants, at least those with the engineering resources to do so, have been adding software infrastructure to their operations to improve authorization rates, handle tokenization, route to different networks, and a host of other capabilities that simply do not come with the basic developer API toolkit. Those without engineering teams to help automate these capabilities are left to manual or ad hoc means to manage their operations. Either way, operational gaps often lead to lost revenues, increased costs, and sub-optimal customer experiences. Using the orchestration framework to guide our conversation, we discuss how orchestration is enabling merchants to do things differently—with more latitude and agency over their payments operations. We invite you to delve into this episode, which shifts the conversation from “What is orchestration?” to “Why is orchestration so powerful?” It's a valuable discussion you won't want to miss.

Many musicians are injured and many are playing in pain. In 2012, Dr. Bronwen Ackerman, Professor of Biomedical Science at the University of Sydney, surveyed members of the eight professional full time orchestras in Sydney. 84% of the musicians had experienced pain that had interfered either with playing their instrument or participating in orchestral rehearsals and performances. 50% had pain at time of the survey. Another study, done in 2008 by the American Association of Physician Assistants, found that there was a 50-76% of musicians reported musculoskeletal injuries. In comparison, a 2009 study found that the injury rate for Cirque du Soleil artists was 9.7% compared to a 15.2% injury rate for NCAA collegiate women's gymnasts. You know there are just some of those musical pieces that take a toll on your body? We love them but as in the case of our latest podcast guest, harpist Danielle Kuntz, the piece by Prokofiev she referenced just automatically is understood that you will develop tendonitis by the end of playing it. Isn't it insane? Don't you wish composers knew how to better write for your instrument? That's why she created THE TOOLBOX SESSIONS ( And if you hurry you can still register HERE ). It is a 3-day virtual summit designed to give you the tools you need to write for instruments & voices! The pandemic rocked retail to the core, and was a time when multiple payments options and omni-channel commerce became vital to survival. Some of the biggest casualties are the mid to large traditional retailers who have declared bankruptcy in record numbers. Their profit margins are being squeezed by the behemoths while a lot of the problem solving has been for small businesses to operate better and smoother. In order to compete, retailers need to be able to move as swiftly as the payments industry, keeping up with new preferences, and experiment with trends. We spoke with John Lunn, CEO and Co-Founder of Gr4vy about creating a solution that allows these retailers to modify their payments stacks, and give retailers much needed flexibility. [Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] Composer John Lunn has built a career that spans across multiple genres in film and television. For over two decades, John has contributed music to make worlds come alive, carve out characters and inject the emotional core of the story into the narrative. In this All Access, we caught up with John while he was in town to walk through his career and discuss his approach and philosophies with scoring. John shares his techniques for starting a brand new TV series, as well as how the music can evolve or not evolve across seasons. John also talks about his technique for coming up with a main title theme, and how he tends to write a few episodes worth of music first and let the music speak out to see what melody rises to the top. We also dive into Downton Abbey, and what the approach was to return to that world with the feature film that takes place after the end of the series. John talks about how working with the same crew and talent made it feel like it was picking back up right where they left off. John Lunn is one is not only one of the kindest people around, but also a magnificent storyteller. It's an honor to have him on All Access. Purdue Prepares to Pay the Piper for Role in Opioid EpidemicGuest: Jennifer Oliva, Associate Professor of Law, Seton Hall UniversityPurdue Pharma, the maker of Oxycontin, filed for bankruptcy this week as part of a settlement over the billions of dollars it made aggressively marketing addictive opioids. The company and its owners are facing thousands of lawsuits from states, counties, cities and Native American tribes. Can You Hear the Stars Tonight? –Astronomy for the BlindGuest: Allyson Bieryla, Manager of the Astronomy Lab and Clay Telescope in the Department of Astronomy at HarvardThe stars have been a source of wonder and guidance for centuries--but only to those with the eyes to see them. Harvard's astronomy lab is creating interactive ways for the people with visual impairments to experience the night sky through touch and sound John Lunn, Composer for Downton Abbey scoreGuest: John LunnThe Crawleys of Downton Abbey are back: That music alone is enough to send a shiver of anticipation down the spine of Downton Abbey fan like me. Luxurious estates, extravagant costumes –and so much drama for both the Crawleys and their servants! None of it would be as good without the lush musical background composed by John Lunn. He won two Emmys for the TV series and composed the music for Downton Abbey the movie, which is now in theaters An Evangelical in the Trump EraGuest: Richard Mouw, Professor of Faith and Public Life at Fuller Theological Seminary, Author “Restless Faith”White evangelicals were important to President Trump's election in 2016 and will be again in 2020. As a result, we've seen a number of prominent evangelicals publicly distance themselves from the label. They're unhappy that being “evangelical” in America today equates with supporting a politician whose behavior, rhetoric and policies run contrary to the gospel of Jesus Christ. But Richard Mouw is sticking with the label “evangelical” –though he clearly wrestles with it in his new book, “Restless Faith.” America Is Failing to Protect All Religions EquallyGuest: Asma Uddin, Religious Liberty Lawyer, Author “When Islam Is Not a Religion”Let's turn now to the experience of being Muslim in America today. Asma Uddin is a legal scholar and author of the new book, “When Islam is Not a Religion: Inside America's Fight for Religious Freedom.” Asma Uddin, welcome back to Top of Mind. Faking Out the Deep Fake DetectorsGuest: Christye Sisson, Professor of Photographic Sciences at Rochester Institute of TechnologyIt's now possible for someone to doctor a photo of a video so professionally that even an expert eye can be fooled into thinking it's real. The Department of Defense is concerned enough about the potential for this kind of “deepfake” technology to spark violence, influence elections and spread misinformation that it's got a whole deepfake detection research project that includes paying scientists to make the most convincing fakes they can.

What is Spiritual Direction? How can we care for one another in our listening? How can we help each other notice what God is doing in our lives? Join host Claire Perini, Susan Phillips and John Lunn as we discuss these questions and more on this week's episode of the Regent College Podcast.
On today’s very special episode, we have a conversation with the Emmy-award winning composer John Lunn (Downton Abbey, Grantchester, The White Queen). Both a classically-trained composer and innovative producer, John brings a unique blend of musical depth and contemporary daring to his work in TV and Film. In addition to his beloved work on Downton Abbey, he is also known for his scores to several BBC adaptations of Charles Dickens’ classics, including Little Dorrit, which was nominated for both BAFTA and Emmy awards and the Mystery of Edwin Drood which was nominated for an Ivor Novello Award in 2013. Also in 2013, John composed the score to The White Queen, based on the series of books by Phillipa Gregory and this year has composed the score to its’ sequel series The White Princess, airing now in the US, Sunday evenings on STARZ. In addition to his great work as a composer, John is a truly sweet person who has much to say on music and its storytelling power. Enjoy! Masterpiece’s Downton Abbey came to an end last night after six seasons. In this tell-all exposé, Scottish composer John Lunn talks about his years with the Crawley family, what Lord Grantham really thought of Branson, and his thoughts on Thomas Barrow’s perpetual bad attitude. Okay, okay — not exactly. But Lunn does talk about how he got into writing for TV, how it’s different than writing operas and violin concertos, and about being part of the Downton team for six seasons. Past (and future!) secrets are revealed. All in a lovely Scottish accent. All music in this episode (except for the Bach) from the CD, Downton Abbey: The Ultimate Collection: Prelude & Fugue No. 24 in B Minor BWV 893. JS Bach. Angela Hewitt. The Suite Such Good Luck Escapades End of An Era Audio production for this episode by Todd “Lord of Toddington” Hulslander with pregnant pauses by Dacia Clay and assistance from Mark DiClaudio. There's been a lot of attention paid recently to women working in the whisky industry, but when Allisa Henley was promoted to Head Distiller at Tennessee's George Dickel Distillery last March, she just took over for John Lunn without even so much as a news release. While most people thought of her as being in charge of the distillery's visitor center, she had quietly been Lunn's understudy for a decade and stepped right into the role she had been training for - at the distillery just a few miles from where she grew up. We'll talk with Allisa on WhiskyCast In-Depth about the transition and the challenges of being a whiskey maker in the heart of the Bible Belt, especially since the Dickel distillery is located in a dry county. In the news, a new report projects American whiskey could outsell single malt Scotch worldwide as soon as 2020, with much of that demand for Bourbon and Tennessee whiskies. Whisky Magazine has announced the North American winners in the 2016 World Whisky Awards, and there's a surprise winner in the battle for "World's Best Bourbon" honors. Balcones Distilling in Texas fired up the stills at its new Waco distillery for the first time this week after taking home three Whisky Magazine awards, and we'll have your reaction to last week's interview with Balcones founder and former master distiller Chip Tate as he prepares to begin making whisky again at his new distillery. We'll also have more of your reaction to the Compass Box transparency campaign, along with tasting notes for two unique craft whiskies from Washington and Colorado.
John Lunn, the main evangelist for the BattleHack series of events, has become a sort of legend. The great marketing efforts of Braintree_dev has contributed to this but also, his years of expertise in development and the genuine admiration of the developers that attend the event in every city. During the Athens event, held in May of 2015, John told us what BattleHack aims to achieve; whether PayPal is looking to hire developers through the event and whether it has been successful all these years. Of course we did ask him about PayPal spinning off eBay and what they’re planning with their public offering. He talks about mobile payments and developers disrupting the Banking system with all these new fintech startups. Interviewed by Vicki Kolovou for Tech talks Central.
The British TV show Downton Abbey is the most popular drama in PBS history, with over 10 million viewers per episode, and more Emmy nominations than any non-US show ever. The theme music is one of its signatures, but it was originally written as a piece of score for the first episode, and then later condensed and turned into the version that appears in the opening credits. The music was recorded by a chamber orchestra, all at once, in the same room, so in order to isolate different pieces for Song Exploder, we went back to composer John Lunn’s original demo compositions, made with samples in the computer. In this episode, you'll get to hear how those two compare.
Lawyers are circling around the whisky industry, much like sharks around a shipwreck. At least five different US distillers and bottlers have been hit with class-action lawsuits since last September accusing them of misleading consumers. The litigation largely focuses on whether their whiskies are "hand-made," "small-batch," or claim to come from a small-scale distillery that actually purchases bulk whiskey from larger distillers. This week on WhiskyCast In-Depth, we'll hear from one of the attorneys targeting the whisky industry. Abbas Kazerounian's California law firm specializes in class-action consumer cases, and is currently suing Maker's Mark, Jim Beam, and Tito's Vodka over claims that their products are hand-made. His goal is to get drinks producers to be more honest with consumers, and plans to expand that fight to Scotch Whisky and other spirits as well. Beam Suntory declined to make anyone available to discuss the lawsuits, but company spokesmen have said the lawsuits are without merit. In the news, George Dickel master distiller John Lunn is leaving Diageo for a new opportunity, Brown-Forman plans to turn up the heat on Fireball with its Jack Daniel's Tennessee Fire, and two sides are squabbling over the trademark rights to a historic distillery name. This week's tasting notes feature The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve and the Evan Williams Single Barrel 2005 Vintage Bourbon.
John Lunn, Lean Evangelist for EMEA PayPal, covers their major Mobile World Congress 2014 announcements; the Samsung Galaxy S5 which will allow payments with your fingerprint and the collaboration on the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 Watch. How PayPal is more interested in making our lives more convenient and not only secure. Interviewed by George Voulgaris for Tech Talks Central.
