As the Film Buffs continue their deep dive into Kevin Smith's cinematic world, they recall the first time they watched Chasing Amy in 1997. The screening took place in a packed auditorium at Rutgers University in Philadelphia, an unforgettable night where they may have seen a rare, uncut version of the film—one that has yet to be released or made available beyond that special evening.

In this episode of Born to Watch, we take a wild ride back to 1985 for a Weird Science (1985) Review, where two geeky teens somehow manage to create the perfect woman with a little help from a computer, some questionable science, and a whole lot of 80s magic. But does this John Hughes cult classic still hold up today, or is it a relic best left in the past? Whitey, G Man, and Damo break it all down—the absurd plot, the unforgettable performances, and the film's impact on pop culture. From Oingo Boingo's legendary theme song to the iconic Kelly LeBrock taking nerd wish-fulfillment to a whole new level, Weird Science is packed with classic 80s energy. But how does it fare when viewed through a modern lens? We debate the film's over-the-top humor, its place in the John Hughes cinematic universe, and whether it's truly a teenage fantasy or just plain ridiculous. And speaking of ridiculous—how about that scene-stealing performance from Bill Paxton as Chet? He might just be one of cinema's most unforgettable older brothers. And here's a question for the real movie buffs: Did Mad Max 2 inspire Weird Science? With Vernon Wells reprising a very familiar role, it's hard to ignore the similarities. We dig into the connections between the two films and how a Mad Max villain somehow ended up in this teenage comedy.Of course, it wouldn't be Born to Watch without some heated debates. Are Ian and Max the worst dweeb bullies in movie history? Did this film get overlooked in a stacked year of 80s cinema? And what was up with Gary's infamous bar scene—comedic genius or a joke that went on way too long?We also bring back the fan-favorite Hit Sleeper Dud segment, uncovering forgotten 1985 gems and taking a closer look at No Retreat, No Surrender, Fortress, and the bizarre misfire that was Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Plus, we read some hilarious listener comments and break down why one fan thinks our Fight Club episode might just be the Dune: Part Two of our podcast. And don't miss the return of Whitey's Kick Arse Credit Theme Song, only a quality jingle could make Gow's song this week better.

Continuing the Film Buffs' study of Francis Ford Coppola's filmography, One From the Heart takes center stage—a film that was panned by critics upon release and effectively caused the collapse of Coppola's film studio as its first production. Now, the Film Buffs argue it's time to revisit this movie without the baggage of its reputation as a disaster. Because in truth, it's not a disaster—it's a masterpiece.

In this episode of the TruVue Podcast, we bring the barbershop talk to the box office with Speak No Evil (2024), the chilling horror-thriller that redefines the term "AirBN Flee." Imagine booking a cozy countryside getaway, only to find your hosts are auditioning for the next season of Psycho B&B. Yeah, it's that kind of nightmare. The film follows an American family who, after a seemingly innocent vacation friendship, accepts an invitation to visit their new British acquaintances. What starts as an awkward cultural exchange quickly spirals into a masterclass of discomfort and dread. It's like Meet the Parents meets The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with a dash of Get Out for good measure. But it's not about the review; it's the conversation with the crew as we dissect the film's slow-burn tension, the social niceties that make you want to scream, and the ultimate lesson: sometimes, it's okay to be rude if it means staying alive. So grab your popcorn and your emergency exit plan as we explore why Speak No Evil (2024) might just make you think twice before clicking "Book Now" on that charming countryside retreat. Netflix is launching its Milestone Movies collection, starting with classics turning 50 in 2024. The initial wave includes iconic films such as Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles and Jack Nicholson-led Chinatown. This collection aims to address the absence of Old Hollywood movies on Netflix, providing a showcase for Hollywood hits predating 1970. To further celebrate film anniversaries, Netflix plans to add more titles throughout 2024, starting with 1984 releases in April, followed by 1994 titles in June and 2004 films in October. In addition to streaming, Netflix has organized in-person screenings at prominent theatres. The 1974 classics collection offers a diverse range of films, including works by directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese.
If you're on Letterboxd... do NOT read this! Today we're joined by the delightful Bridger Winegar, host of "I Said No Gifts," to talk about that old favorite of showy auteurs and Twitter cinephiles alike: the LONG one-shot take. Are directorial gimmicks anti-woman because they distract from the work of actresses? Should we ethically contain film buffs somewhere so the rest of us don't have to hear about different kinds of cinema lenses? Who is Margaret Qualley? The answer may shock you. Thank you to everyone who came out to our tour! We love you more than you can possibly imagine. Dr. Leah Schade and Ph.D. student Ben Hollenbach join the show today to talk about how film depicts Jesus Christ and other Biblical figures ... sometimes right, sometimes wrong, but we three movie nerds have fun talking about it. Leah and Ben share a lot of knowledge and history on these films. Plus, a BIG announcement at the end of the show. So listen, and stick around till the end!
The film buffs have been BAD. They are a couple of disgusting procrastinators who wait until the last minute to do anything and everything - including but not limited to watching, recording, and releasing this episode. This week Hadley and John are getting back into the swing of things and talking about one of the greatest seminal works of documentary filmmaking, Paris is Burning. Released to overwhelming controversy, praise, and critical analysis in 1990, Paris is Burning is a fabulous little glimpse into the world of 1980's drag culture in NYC. Hadley and John talk queerness, realness, RuPaul tea, and apologize profusely for being gone for so long. Enjoy.
Hadley and John are back and discussing the 2003 surrealist French animated comedy, The Triplets of Belleville, written and directed by Sylvian Chomet. Triplets is a French odyssey, an adventure story about a grandmother who will stop at nothing to save her grandson from the clutches of the French Mafia. With the help of an identical trio of 30's cabaret singers, granny Souza embarks on the adventure of her lifetime. Our film buffs discuss the film's many cultural references to race and media and possibly get into a huge fight that ends in battle royale levels of violence and gore. Smash that play button to find out who comes out on top.
In 1995 Richard Linklater released what would come to be considered one of the most unique, exciting, and lovable romance films ever. Before Sunrise watches Celine and Jesse discover themselves while discovering each other. It is a simple film that chronicles a single night spent between these two love birds as they wander the streets of Vienna talking about everything under the damn midnight sun. Hadley and John get drunk and discuss the structure and influence of this seminal piece that spawned two surprise sequels and began Linklater's great cinematic experiment which spans decades.
In 1998 The Truman Show was a revelation. Truman Burbank is living in a simulated reality that revolves entirely around him. He doesn't know it yet, but he's about to find out the hard way that his entire life has been a reality show ingested by the masses. Starring Jim Carrey in a surprisingly poignant turn as Truman, Laura Linney, Ed Harris, and everyone's favorite...Paul Giamatti, The Truman Show packs an emotional punch. Hadley and John are baring their souls and getting deep. They're talking about social media, mental health, race, theology, the allegory of the cave, and they finally answer the age old question...is there a god? and if so...is god Ed Harris? All that and more on the third episode of We Wanna Be Film Buffs.
Trigger Warning: This week, Hadley and John discuss the 1974 Oscar darling Chinatown directed by...whatever, written by Robert Towne, and starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. Chinatown is often considered to have one of the greatest scripts of all time. The film follows Los Angeles P.I. JJ Gittes through the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles. As he investigates the murder of a local politician he becomes embroiled in web of conspiracy, deceit, and tragic family secrets. In this episode Hadley and John briefly discuss Roman Polanski and ethical film analysis, as well as three and five act film structure and all the juicy juicy details of this weeks film. This episode contains conversation regarding sexual assault and abuse.
In this episode, John and Hadley discuss the 1942...or 1943 classic Casablanca! Directed by Michael Curtiz, this noir-romance-thriller-war drama-melting pot of a movie has been breaking hearts and inspiring generations of auteurs for decades. Considered one of the greatest films of all time, Casablanca tells the story of Rick and Ilse, lovers torn apart by World War 2 and brought back together in Casablanca by a series of life altering and desperate circumstances. John and Hadley discuss their wannabe film buff origins, break down the plot of this timeless tale, and introduce the film being discussed next week on the first episode of WE WANNA BE FILM BUFFS.

Greg and Joe are joined by their old pal and friendly neighbor from the north Katie Needs to discuss her top 10 favorite romantic comedies of all time. To kick things off Katie discusses her passion for the rom com genre while also presenting her iron clad criteria for rating these films (3:52). Before diving into the top 10 Katie nearly cancels a dated Adam Sandler rom com from the early 2000's (9:00) and then discusses her #10 which includes one of her favorite tropes in the genre that is "maybe your life would be better if you weren't such a dick" (11:25). As they move through the rest of the top 10 the gang covers a wide range of topics including a movie that basically had a red carpet premiere in Rochester, NY in 2003 (24:43), the Taj Mahal of movie parents that is Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci (35:00), Katies STYLE icon Julia Stiles (51:00) and Kids Choice award winner Julia Roberts for her portrayal of a hooker with a heart of gold in a very R-rated movie. All that and MORE.
