"The Cosmological argument is a family of arguments that seek to demonstrate the existence of a Sufficient Reason or First Cause of the existence of the cosmos... The kalam cosmological argument traces its roots to the efforts of early Christian theologians who, out of their commitment to the biblical teaching of creation ex nihilo, sought to rebut the Aristotelian doctrine of the eternity of the universe." The argument is extremely simple: 1. Everything that begins to exist has a cause. 2. The universe began to exist. 3. Therefore, the universe has a cause. This is part 2 of our apologetics study as we work through "The Blackwell Companion to Natural Theology." James Sinclair, co-author of the chapter on the kalam cosmological argument with William Lane Craig, joins the show to discuss the scientific evidence in support of premise 2. We look at the FRW mode, astronomical evidence for the Big Bang, the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems, the BVG theorem, quantum gravity approaches, and the exceptions to each of these approaches. Come join the conversation and bring your questions! James D. Sinclair (MS Physics Texas A&M, BS Physics Carnegie-Mellon) is a senior anti-air warfare analyst for the United States Navy with a specialty in the constructive (digital only) modeling of air-to-air combat. Some career accomplishments include analytical support for the fielding of the AIM-9X Sidewinder missile, combat utility evaluation of the F-35 Lighting II, and presentations at public symposia such as the Military Operations Research Society (MORS) and the Combat Identification Systems Conference (CISC). He began to interview cosmologists in the early 2000s on the topic of the beginnings of the universe, bringing Navy knowledge integration methods to the formulation known as the Kalam Cosmological Argument. This ultimately led to a collaboration with philosopher William Lane Craig and two co-authored articles: “The Kalam Cosmological Argument,” in The Blackwell Companion to Natural Theology and “On Non-Singular Spacetimes and the Beginning of the Universe,” in Scientific Approaches to the Philosophy of Religion. He also co-authored the article "Fine-Tuning and Indications of Transcendent Intelligence" with Robert Spitzer.
Does the soul survive death—or is consciousness just brain chemistry? In this mind-bending episode, Father Spitzer takes us into the eerie world where science meets the supernatural. He shares real cases that defy everything we thought we knew: patients speaking with no brain activity, a man living a normal life with almost no brain, and a 4-year-old recounting his sister's miscarriage—before he was even born. Even unborn babies might experience consciousness. If the brain isn't the source of consciousness, science may be closer to proving the soul than ever before.NEW: Join our exclusive Rose Report community! https://lilaroseshow.supercast.com - We'll have BTS footage, ad-free episodes, monthly AMA, and early access to our upcoming guests.A big thanks to our partner, EWTN, the world's leading Catholic network! Life can be stressful, and maybe you feel like you're at the end of your rope. Now is the time to lean on help from the Holy Spirit! Timmerie shared some solid wisdom about the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, specifically Peace and Patience, and she talked about why these two are basically must-haves if you want to keep your sanity and grow in holiness. Timmere's Take on Peace: -What It Is: Peace is way more than just stress relief. It's this deep sense of security in God. -Fr. Robert Spitzer's Definition: He describes it as feeling truly “at home,” which makes sense because, in God, we’re back where we belong. -The Problem: Our culture is all about being out of kilter: identity crises, constant distractions, and relationships that are out of whack. No wonder we’re restless! -The Solution: Peace comes from trusting God and growing closer to Him. Prayer, the sacraments, staying in a state of grace... all those basics matter. Timmerie reminds you that this peace is a gift of the Holy Spirit, so don’t be shy about straight-up asking God for it. Patience -The Dangerous Gift: Ever pray for patience and suddenly everyone’s cutting you off in traffic and every store line is like a mile long? Yep, God answers by giving you opportunities to practice patience. -What It Actually Is: Patience is about not losing your cool when life feels unfair or people are being difficult to deal with. It’s mercy and compassion for both others and yourself. -St. Thomas Aquinas’ Wisdom: True patience isn’t just surviving annoyances; it’s staying unbothered by them. It’s like building resilience against suffering and not letting it mess up your commitment to virtue. -Freedom in Patience: Timmerie points out that patience makes us free because it helps us stay grounded in doing what’s right, even when life feels like one big dumpster fire. -Connection to Charity: Patience and love go together. The more you love God and others, the easier it is to be patient. Takeaway Tips: -Pray for these gifts: they’re from the Holy Spirit... not a DIY project. -Lean into the sacraments and keep your prayer life strong. -Keep perspective: What we see as evil or annoying might just be an opportunity to grow. -Love first; patience will follow. Now, go forth and practice being peaceful and patient; just, you know, try not to lose it if your coffee order’s wrong today.

Okay, so if you're feeling a little overwhelmed this Advent season: gifts to buy, Christmas lights half-strung, cookies burnt, and parenting stress: Timmerie and Fr. Robert Spitzer have some wisdom to save your sanity (and soul)! Here’s advice from Father: Christ’s Big Advent Gifts: -Redemption from evil (Bye, Satan). -Tools for battle: Sacraments (especially confession and the Eucharist), Scripture, and moral teachings. Father’s 5-Step "Get Ready for Jesus" Plan: Mass & Confession: Feeling “meh” about your spiritual life? Add a weekday Mass or go to confession more often. (Yes, confession can be hard but it's not worth leaving your soul unprotected!) Scripture & Prayer: Carve out time to meditate on Scripture. Even 2 days a week of reading God’s Word can make a big difference. Examine Your Soul: Use an examination of conscience (loads of free ones online) to spotlight what’s holding you back. Just pick three areas to focus on: don’t overdo it! Jesus’ Moral Playbook: Reflect on His teachings and how you’re living them. It’s like a spiritual New Year’s resolution. Keep It Realistic: Don’t aim for perfection by January 1. Small, sustainable steps are key. Pro-Tips Think of these habits like spiritual weight training: add a little at a time and watch your strength grow. Father reminds us that this isn’t about guilt-tripping; it’s about freedom from evil’s grip and making room for the peace and joy Jesus wants to bring you this Christmas. Advent is your time to prep your soul for the arrival of the King of Kings: not just the next chaotic Christmas party. So, turn down the seasonal noise and get serious about Christ’s gifts. The best present you can offer Him? A heart ready to say yes. Now, light those Advent candles and get to work!
The line between science and faith is one we have been walking on for decades and Deacon Harold chats with Fr. Robert Spitzer about his new book, "New Proofs for the Existence of God" to help prep us for when we get asked questions of faith that science tries to explain or debunk. Also we look at Soulful Psalm 20

11/7/24 - Today, there is more science-based evidence for God, the soul, and life after death than ever before. Then why are scores of people turning to unbelief because of “science”? The answer is simple: they do not know the science. Science at the Doorstep to God presents in depth the latest evidence to turn the rising tide of unbelief. Father Robert Spitzer, S.J., synthesizes eight recent studies confirming an intelligent creator of physical reality as well as a transphysical soul capable of surviving bodily death. This is the most comprehensive scientific treatment of God and the afterlife to date. It combines natural scientific method, metaphysical method, medical studies, anthropological and genetics studies, and phenomenological descriptions, showing how each distinct method and data set reinforces the others. 10/28/24 - Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. is the President of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith and the Spitzer Center. He was the President of Gonzaga University from 1998 to 2009. He is the author of many books, including Healing the Culture, Finding True Happiness, Five Pillars of the Spiritual Life, The Light Shines On in the Darkness, The Soul's Upward Yearning, and God So Loved the World. Christ, Science, and Reason comprehensively presents the scientific evidence in support of Jesus, the Eucharist, and Mary. Father Robert Spitzer, S.J., closely examines the scientific evidence for The Passion and Resurrection of Jesus from the Shroud of Turin, the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist from three recent scientifically investigated Eucharistic miracles, and the supernatural dimensions of the apparitions of Mary manifest in the Tilma of Guadalupe, the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima, and many healing miracles connected with the Grotto of Lourdes. The book makes clear that the Catholic Church is not anti-science, but quite the opposite—it is one of the most scientifically aware religious denominations in the world. It will also be clear that science is not anti-God, anti-Christ, or anti-religious. On the contrary, its tools and methods give considerable credible evidence for all of them. This week on CounterSpin: Corporate U.S. news media continue to report things like Israel's recent strike on the Gaza Strip, which killed at least 19 people in an area designated a “refuge” for Palestinians, and to include warnings of a possible wider war in the region. But there's little sense of urgency, of something horrible happening that U.S. citizens could have a role in preventing. We'll talk about that with media critic, activist, and teacher Gregory Shupak. U.S. corporate media have a similar “another day, another tragedy” outlook on gun violence. It happens, we're told, but all reporters need to do is quote people saying it's bad yet oddly unavoidable, and they're done. We'll hear from Robert Spitzer, a historian of gun regulation and gun rights, about some spurious reasons behind the impasse on gun violence. That studied lack of urgent concern about human life — is that journalism? Why do the press corps need a constitutional amendment to protect their ability to speak if all they're going to say is, “oh well”? The post Gregory Shupak on Palestinian Genocide / Robert Spitzer on Gun Rights and Rules appeared first on KPFA.

The nature and purpose of the human body was once considered obvious. But it has come under attack from secular culture in some strange and even disturbing ways in recent years. Now, unfortunately, it is up for grabs. The Word on Fire Institute sought to address this confusion surrounding the body at our recent Wonder Conference, “Nature and the Human Body.” Drawing on rich theological, philosophical, scientific, medical, moral, political, technological, and artistic resources, the conference sought to reclaim an authentic understanding and deep appreciation for the body—its resilience and fragility, its joys and its sufferings, its transcendence and its temporality, and, above all, its wonder. A listener asks how Catholics should think about near-death experiences and stories. 00:00 | Intro 01:23 | Hosting the Wonder Conference in Bishop Barron's own diocese 02:25 | Why we needed Wonder 03:50 | Understanding the false dichotomy of faith and science 06:20 | Addressing the question of body/soul unity 12:38 | Inherent dangers in dividing body and soul 15:36 | Can Catholic ministries give platforms to evolutionary biologists? 17:11 | Highlights from Dr. Heather Heying's Wonder talk 18:45 | Beginning with the logos and intelligibility 20:04 | The human difference 21:04 | Bishop Barron Presents: liturgical artist Jonathan Pageau 23:06 | Materialism as an incoherent philosophy vs. scientific worldview 26:30 | The intelligibility of creation 27:36 | Fr. AMDG. PhD biologist and stem cell researcher Dr. Daniel Kuebler wasn't always a science major. Dr. Kuebler began his academic as an English major at Catholic University of America before transitioning to biology for his master's and doctoral degrees. Now a professor of science at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Dr. Kuebler educates a new generation of students on biology and the "big questions," from evolution to the latest developments in cell research to the history of science itself. Dr. Kuebler discusses the benefits of a well-rounded education, citing his background as an English major; reveals what inspired him to become a scientist; shares his cure for "boring" science classes; gives insight into the impact of faith on cell research; and drops hints about his forthcoming book, podcast and current scientific research. How were the specific levels and their characteristics determined?Universal Relevance: In your research and experiences, do these levels of happiness resonate universally across different cultures and societies? How do you address variations in cultural definitions of happiness?Scientific Intersection: How are scientific principles and discoveries integrated with philosophical and theological concepts in this framework of happiness? And much more...Join us for an enlightening discussion!Biography:Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Fr. Happiness is an elusive ideal. What contributes to it? Why does it feel like happiness is a Game of Whac-a-Mole? When we feel it in one place, somewhere else gets misaligned. But how does having faith and living a moral life aid in the quest for achieving happiness? To discuss these questions and more, I welcome Fr. Robert Spitzer, host of Fr. Spitzer's Universe on EWTN and President of the Magis Center for Faith and Reason, to talk about his new book, “The Four Levels of Happiness: Your Path to Personal Flourishing.” In today's episode, we discuss how happiness is the fulfillment of desire, but that there are multiple desires within us, and they are sometimes competing with each other. Which is all part of God's crazy plan for us. Fr. Spitzer explains his concept of the four levels of happiness and how we can pursue them. We discuss why faith is connected to the highest level of happiness and that living a moral life is integral to the pursuit of happiness. Have thoughts about this episode? As we enter into the Triduum on this Holy Thursday, we have our sights on Easter, to celebrate the Resurrection. In today's fascinating episode, I sit down again with Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., physicist, Catholic priest, and President of the Magis Center to discuss some of the evidence and science of the Resurrection. We discuss 3 different ways to prove the resurrection of Jesus, including the Shroud of Turin, of which many believe to be the burial cloth of Jesus. Fr. Spitzer debunks many of the misconceptions of the Shroud of Turin including a break down of the 1988 carbon dating mishap. We discuss how the cloth's image shows the wounds of Christ in great detail, and how the image on the cloth is a result of a powerful momentary flash of radiation.Seven Weeks Coffee: https://www.sevenweekscoffee.com Buy your pro-life coffee with a 10% discount using the code LILA!Nimi Skincare: Check out my favorite skin care brand and get 15% off using the code LILA. https://www.nimiskincare.com/discount/LILAredirect=%2Fcollections%2Fall-products EveryLife: https://www.everylife.com Buy diapers from an amazing pro-life diaper company and use code LILA and get 10% off!
