Part 1 of our Oscar Levant Special Subject sees us explain our very personal relationship with this singular figure of 1940s/50s Hollywood in preparation to discuss Gershwin biopic Rhapsody in Blue (1945), great Warner Bros. woman's picture/noir Humoresque (1946), Doris Day debut Romance on the High Seas (1948), and accidental Fred and Ginger reunion pic The Barkleys of Broadway (1949). Just a warning: if you're looking for an in-depth discussion for the latter two, this probably isn't the podcast episode you want. But if you're more interested in the relationship between Rhapsody in Blue and Humoresque (thanks to the contributions of screenwriter Clifford Odets), you've come to the right place. Levant adds his unique texture and authenticity to these stories of the cost of genius—for both the genius and those around them.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s:      Scraping the Surface of Oscar Levant 0h 11m 58s:      RHAPSODY IN BLUE (1945) [dir. Track features host, Al Jolson welcoming guest Peggy Lee for music, comedy and variety - 1948. Kraft Musical Hall was an extremely popular program of the era. Jolson became the host on the Kraft Music Hall on October 2, 1947 through May 26, 1949. His musical conductor and pianist, Oscar Levant, welcomed a wide variety of guests from the stage, screen, and radio. Peggy Lee is his guest on this program. Jolson appeared as a guest on this show several times from 1933 to 1935, before getting the starring role. Oscar Levant quite often pipes in with his dry wit. Jolson kept performing until shortly before his death at the age of 64 in 1950, so these Kraft Music Hall shows were some of his last performances. This track will be stored in the "Musical Variety" Playlist

We're sure you've heard of the Nobel Prize although it's hard to make the case Beth has since she mispronounces it quite a bit in this episode. But have you heard of Nobel Disease? It's when people are labeled geniuses and go on to embrace some whackadoodle pseudoscience. In today's Strange Country episode, Beth and Kelly discuss Kary Mullis, the only Nobel winner to be referred to as “generally barking mad.” He discovered the polymerase chain reaction, which we all regularly employed when we wanted to make dang certain it wasn't covid.
