Hey, there all you Kindred Spirits! We apologize for the delay in the publishing of this episode. (and the delay in the publishing of these little show notes!) The “editing team” clearly got a little behind on this one! It was bound to happen eventually though! We are so blessed to have had several people contact us and ask us when they could be expecting this week's episode to be out! How fun is that? It really lets us see that a handful of people are 100% enjoying our little bookcast and honestly, nothing makes us happier than that! Everyone can breathe now! The episode is out, the show notes have arrived, and we are glad to have you with us. There is a brief moment within this episode where Brooke chimes in “post-recording” so give a spoiler alert - oopsies - for The Great Gatsby. This episode had to be edited again and re-uploaded due to the spoiler alert accidentally being uploaded near the end of the episode as well. If you re-download the episode, that should fix it. Welp, here we go again.
Do think kids' drawings are creepy? They are, right? All big smiles and suns with eyes and weird flowers the size of people… and the dead girls in the background.Right? Our guest this week has built a whole horror story around these little paper nightmares. Hidden Pictures is a novel that blends text and image in ways that I've never seen done before, or never as well. It's a story of childhood imagination, suburban murder and summer terror. Think Gone Girl with Crayola ghosts.Jason and I talk about lots of things – the rise of 1% horror; the relationship between image and text, and how to adapt an experimental book for audio. We get into the fairy tale details that I missed, and ask kid's imaginary friends are just so damn freaky. Trust me, you'll never look at your little cherub's artistic offerings the same way ever again.EnjoyHidden Pictures is published on May 10th by Flatiron Books and Sphere.Other books mentioned in this episode include:The Impossible Fortress (2017), by Jason Rekulak A Kiss Before Dying (1953), Ira LevinHorrorstör (2014), by Grady HendrixPride and Prejudice and Zombies (2009), by Seth Grahame-SmithMiss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children (2011), by Ransom RiggMy article in Esquire on ‘The 50 Best Horror Novels of All Time'Support Talking Scared on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/TalkingScaredPod Come talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, and TikTok or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Download Novellic on Google Play or Apple Store.Support the show

If you love Tim Burton's style of directing, then this movie has those gothic and mystical elements within the movie. Jake Portman, plagued by the death of his grandfather, Abe, decides to go his grandfather's childhood home. Children with special abilities introduces Jake to a land of peculiar children with magical abilities within a time loop that was set in September 3, 1940. Miss Peregrine, is an ymbryne that can maintain a time loop of 24 hours, keeping the children safe from hollowgasts, monsters that go after peculiar children's eyes. In the events of the movie, Jake figures out the mysteries of the past and his special ability as well. In this episode, my friend, Ernesto, and I discuss Tim Burton and his movie style and how movies can sometimes be over dramatized for the sake of money. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kilig-in-circumstances/support

My guest today is Jason Soudah a Composer/Singer-Songwriter/Producer/Mix Engineer from the UK, and has been based in Los Angeles since 2009, when he was invited to intern at Hans Zimmer’s studio complex. Jason was quickly recruited by composer Matthew Margeson (Rocketman, Kingsman: The Secret Service & The Golden Circle, Rings), and they have been collaborating ever since. In this “additional music” capacity, Jason has also worked with composers Henry Jackman, Dominic Lewis, Heitor Pereira, Jim Dooley, Al Clay, Daniel Heath, Benjamin Wallfisch, and Ryan Taubert, among many. As a composer Jason recently won the Best Music Award at the 2019 Boston Film Festival for his score to the movie "Whaling," as well as scoring the multi-award winning Horror Feature "FOLLOWED", and the Emmy-Awarded Documentary Feature “Paradise Reef: The World Is Watching.” Jason has had songs featured on MTV (The Real World, Teen Mom…). He wrote “A Sporting Chance” for the movie “Eddie The Eagle,” “Ladyphones” for the movie “GI-JOE: Retaliation,” and co-wrote “Handy Candy” for the movie “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children” with composers Matthew Margeson and Mike Higham. Right now, Jason is writing music for multiple film projects, mixing scores (most recently for BAFTA-supported composer Emily Rice), and collaborating with other songwriters and artists (as a co-writer and/or producer) with a view to creating songs for synch licenses, for the artist/s themselves, or to be cut by other artists. Jason also produces backing tracks for KIDZ BOP, collaborating with Gary Philips. Thanks to our sponsors! Composer Matthew Margeson has been behind some of the most stylistic and bold scores in recent memory. His work on films such as Kick-Ass 2, the Kingsman franchise, Eddie The Eagle, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, and now Rocketman has showcased his versatility across many genres. Matt joins us for his second All Access, this time to dive into the amazing world of the Elton John biopic, Rocketman. Matt reunites with Eddie The Eagle director, Dexter Fletcher for this wondrous yet dramatically heavy exploration of the highs and lows of Elton John’s life as he exploded into one of the biggest musical artists of all time. Learn how Matt worked alongside renowned producer Giles Martin (son of George Martin) to help blur the lines between song and score. While Giles Martin and his team were responsible for reimagining Elton John’s classic songs, Matt worked alongside to write a score that created a seamless musical narrative. Matt also shares how he worked closely with director Dexter Fletcher to find the right tone and approach for Rocketman and how to support the creative vision of the film. We explore other topics such as what Matt learned early in his career working for composers such as Henry Jackman and Hans Zimmer, and what fuels his inspiration for writing music today. [School of Movies 2019] On paper this is a film we should absolutely love, based on a book we should also absolutely love. Average boy discovers a secret, secluded old mansion populated by strange children with special powers, looked after by an eccentric and magical woman, played by a fine actress and directed by a man known for his quirky outsider tales and memorable imagery. From a multi-part children's book series literally inspired by odd Victorian photographs! And yet it was a strangely cold, disconnected, hollow experience filled with troubling and ultimately unexamined behaviour that makes the central character a different kind of villain to the grotesque child-eating monsters filling up the corners. This is a facsimile of a Guillermo del Toro version of X-Men Hogwarts, run through so many filters of nonsense and artifice that there's almost nothing genuinely effective left. What started out as a Quick Review ended up being edited three times into an exploration of our troubles with Tim Burton. Next Week: The Mummy!
