As an aspiring wildlife tracker I want to know about the signs that animals leave behind. Due to my annoyingly excitable curiosity this includes all animals, and all types of sign. This includes the regurgitated masses of undigested food that makes up a bird pellet. When it comes to pellets, I have found a couple before. Some full of hair, assorted skulls and other bones, feather parts and even a couple full of seed husks from plants. But when it comes to sorting out who left these pellets behind, there is an extraordinary lack of resources to help folks figure it out. I got excited to interview Ed Drewitt again. His new book Bird Pellets, out now on Pelagic Publishing, has tons of photos, lots of detailed info and some great hints on how to identify the makers of the pellets we find. While the book was written with a British and Irish context in mind, there are many overlaps with Turtle Island/North American species which I find quite helpful. As for Ed? He is a professional naturalist, wildlife detective, and broadcaster for the BBC. He has been studying urban Peregrines for over 15 years, and looking into the contents of bird pellets for even longer. He has been on the show before and has been a great help in answering some of my ornithological mysteries pertaining to Peregrine Falcons in the past. It was nice to reconnect over his great new book. There are five million bird eggs stowed away in museums across the world — and the study of eggs, called oology, can give us great insight into birds. The link between DDT and the decline of Peregrine Falcon populations was identified in part using museum and personal egg collections, and this evidence helped lead to a ban on DDT. And today, Peregrines can still be seen zipping across the sky.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. Did you know that Herpetology (study of frogs, snakes, newts and many more!) is a crossroads to falconry? I didn't either! But it was for our guest today, Kenny Elvin. In 2022, Kenny gave a talk to the Bay Area Herpetology group if you want to learn more about the falconry/herpetology connection!  https://youtu.be/zMg_lzlYhiQ?si=KWVqZkv2ASyWQGci Our guest today is Kenny Elvin of Full Circle Falconry. He flies his raptors for groups and events around the state of California, not only for education of raptors but also for wildlife management. He is also known as King Mighty Flighty at local Renaissance Faires! I had the pleasure of meeting with Kenny in person to meet a few of his birds thanks to a friend and co-worker, Lisa Villasenor in Los Gatos for this interview. We had great fun and good conversation, though it is easy to get distracted and lose your train of thought when you have a beautiful Eastern Screech Owl and a Peregrine Falcon close by!  But I think we did ok and the interview is informative, casual and fun. I hope you all enjoy it!  Kenny can be found October 28th at Sanborn County Park in Santa Clara with Lisa Myers of Los Gatos Birdwatcher at a special Raptor Event and Workshop. To see a falcon materialize from the sky in a colossal burst of power in pursuit of prey and to realize the falconer's role, is to enter a new understanding of the natural world, one that takes you to the “edges of existence,” as falconer John Szabo has put it.In this pilot episode of our series “The Edge of Wild,” Master Falconer Shawn Hayes will show us how hunting game with a bird of prey is as rewarding as it is challenging. Shawn's expertise is flying “true” falcons like Gyrfalcons, Prairie Falcons, and Peregrines, which display stunning aerobatics during hunting.“Shawn Hayes is one of the most impressive falconers I know,” writes Tim Gallagher in the March 21 issue of Audubon Magazine. And coming from renowned Cornell ornithologist & falconer Tim Gallagher, that's saying something!Generally reclusive, Shawn Hayes has dedicated his life to the practice of training and caring for falcons, both in his native California and around the world in places like Japan, Pakistan, and Hungary. He was recently profiled in the Patagonia film “Game Hawker, A Wild Journey to Falconry,” and in the March issue of Audubon Magazine, in an article by Tim Gallagher, "The Aspiring Ascent of Master Falconer Shawn Hayes."Click here for updated show notes, article & film links, slideshow & photos.“You can't forge a relationship with a peregrine through learned helplessness, you can only force one, and it will always be tenuous. What is a sustainable rate of consumption for forestry?

Cortes Currents

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - “Most of what's left is up in the mountains and the coast range or the Rockies and so not the productive sites anymore. Most of what was easy to get is gone,” said Bruce Ellingsen, one of the founders of the Cortes Community Forest Co-operative, in reference to British Columbia's old growth trees. In the first of two articles about current forestry practices, Ellingsen looks to nature for models of a more sustainable consumption rate. Landsat satellite data published by the University of Maryland (and reproduced at the top of this page), show that there has been alarming loss of the forests on Vancouver Island and in the interior of British Columbia during the past 20 years. Less easily accessible areas in the north of the province, or in the coastal and rocky mountains, are relatively untouched. In a previous interview Bruce Ellingsen explained that the discrepancy between the government and satellite descriptions of the province's forest coverage may be because trees less than 5 metres high do not show up in Landsat images. So much of the light coloured areas that appear as tree loss in the university's map may be covered by what are in effect tree toddlers. These trees will be harvested once they are between 50 to 80 years old. To use a comparison with humans, then they will effectively be pre-teens, with a far greater proportion of sapwood than is present in mature trees. “We're the ones that are managing it and we're the ones that are going to have the impact. If we want to do it in a sustainable way, then we've got to look for indicators that will give us a guidance as to whether we are going to be able to achieve that goal of having that ecosystem that grows trees for us be able to sustain,” said Bruce Ellingsen. Ellingsen says he came up with the idea of studying predation rates from an old report about the dynamic between Peregrine Falcons and Ancient Murrelets on the Nature of Things. After 17 years of studying, researchers concluded that the Peregrines were probably taking around 15 to 20% of the mean annual seabird population increase. “That got me thinking that possibly there's indicators in natural system dynamics in the world that we could look at,” explained Ellingsen. He discovered a similar predation rate between polar bears and ringed seals, after a visit to Churchill, Manitoba, in 2003. That led him to to the work of Dr Ian Sterling, who has been studying polar bears since the early 1970s. Sterling and his colleagues believe that every year polar bears were consuming between 13% and 22% of the seal population A similar statistic was reported in a New York times about Central America's Leaf Cutter Ants. Scientists found that the ants were only taking 13 to 20% of the shrubs, trees and other vegetation in their area and that has probably been going on for millions of years. The only human example he found comes from the South Island of New Zealand and the Rocky islands offshore, where the Maoris have been harvesting about 18% of the seabird eggs every year. “This has been going on for about 700 years and obviously you can start to say that's a reasonably sustainable dynamic for a population that is reproducing annually,” said Ellingsen. He added that forestry ecologists like Herb Hammond, of the Silva Forest Foundation, and Jerry Franklin, from the University of Washington, seem to agree that maybe 25% of what grows in a forest is extra and the forest needs everything beyond that to keep itself alive and healthy.

I get excited by finding dead animals on the land. There is so much we can learn by looking at these animals when they are in front of us. We can really examine their physical characteristics which isn't always that easy when the animals are alive, going about their own business, and generally trying to avoid interactions with humans. When examining a dead bird there is a lot we can observe, such as their feathers, their bills, talons, bones the body has been opened by predators or by decomposition. We can move some of the limbs to better understand articulations, weight and possible range of motion. But sometimes it is difficult for us to know which animals we are finding out in the field. That's were Ed Drewitt helps. For Episode 142 I get to talk to Ed Drewitt, naturalist, Peregrine Falcon researcher, and author of Raptor Prey Remains : A guide to identifying what's been eaten by a bird of prey. On the show we discuss what is happening in England (where Ed is located), what the birds are up to this time of year, and also who is migrating and who is staying put. We talk about raptor ecology on the broad sense and also get focus on Peregrines. He also shares about his own efforts, from a school boy to working on his PhD 30 years later, all the while investigating feathers, skulls, and other prey remains. It was a nice and relaxed interview, with Ed sharing so much of what he has learned through his years of observation and study, and how his book can help those who are getting started in the world of tracking birds of prey by learning to correctly identify that which they prey upon.

Falconry as we know it is a relatively new thing. Tom Smylie entered the American falconry scene as it was just decades old, and the landscape for the sport was literally Wild West. There were no regulations, no rules, hardly any clubs or organizations, and all of this had to be made up as these falconry pioneers went along. Tom donated the first two pairs of breeding Peregrines to the cause of saving the species from extinction by DDT. He was also there at the founding of the North American Falconry Association, and faithfully served the organization for many years. But we’ll let Tom tell his story!

Jason is a Thornhill, ON. native who always wanted to be a comic artist. He could always draw his classmates under the table, but Thornlea Secondary School was the basis for author Gordon Korman's 1985 novel Don't Care High and the moniker was still true when Lapidus went there. The vibe killed any enthusiasm he had for institutional education and that buzz kill continued in art school where he just couldn't connect painting on wood block and philosphizing about art with the practical skills he wanted to learn in order to make comics.Instead, he leaned into his job at the Royal Ontario Museum teaching comic book classes for kids in informal settings. Ironically, this lapsed art student has made a career out of teaching art in unconventional environments to elementary school and college age students. That seemed like where his art talent would go until a double date he definitely didn't want to be on. That's where he met Chris Sanagan. Their girlfriends (now wives) were already best friends and they were just dragged along for the ride. Thankfully, they had the same interests: comics, Wilco, the Leafs, Batman the Animated Series and more. It was enough to hit it off, so when Sanagan proposed this crazy idea for a comic he had to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Canada's involvement in World War I, he went with it.This is what eventually became known as The Group of 7 – a historical fiction comic centring on the real life convergence of several Canadian historical figures in Europe during WWI, except in this version they're all recruited for an off book secret mission. Think a Canadian League of Extraordinary Gentlemen featuring Conn Smythe, John McCrea, Lester Pearson, Frederick Banting and more.Jason explains how this project has pushed and challenged him in several unexpected ways and he gives a sneak peek of a spin-off comic coming out of the same alternate history called Peregrines. This podcast is sponsored by the good folks at Hairy Tarantula and Strangers, the new album from Summer and Youth.@jasonlapidus@JasonLapidusGroupof7comic.ca@groupof7comicGroup of 7 on FacebookSponsorsHairy TarantulaStrangers, the new album from Summer and Youth

Hello hello word nerds! Welcome to another episode of DIY MFA Radio. Today I have the pleasure of speaking with author Diane Saxton. As a journalist, Diane has written for Vanity Fair, The Huffington Post, Holiday Magazine and Greenwich Review and she has covered everything from torture victims to physics, animal rights activists, exotic travel, and movie producers. She brings this same passion and gift for storytelling to her debut novel, PEREGRINE ISLAND, which we’ll be discussing today.   In this episode Diane and I discuss: Building a story from a theme and a few core characters. The contrast between the male and female characters in the story. How sometimes writers don’t realize they’re making artful choices until after they’ve made them. The long and winding path that brought her to finding the perfect home for her book with She Writes Press. How writers can use their craft to honor the lives of those no longer with us. Finding your writing rhythm, even if it’s totally different from what works for other writers. Plus, Diane’s #1 tip for writers. About the Author Diane Saxton was a journalist with Vanity Fair UK, Holiday Magazine, and Greenwich Review, and covered everything from torture victims to psychics, animal rights activists, exotic travel, and movie producers. A new chapter opened up for her after interviewing Amnesty International US founder Hannah Grunwald. Alarmed that the stories of incredible and influential lives such as Grunwald’s could be lost as the Greatest Generation passes, Saxton began capturing their histories and compiled them into a 1,000 page biographical collection, which became the inspiration for her next book. She brings the same gift for storytelling with illuminating subtext to her debut novel, Peregrine Island. Saxton divides her time between New York City and the Berkshires, where she lives with her husband, dogs and horses. Peregrine Island Have you ever wondered what the impetus was to start a certain painting? Why the artist chose to immortalize a particular subject? What if you suddenly discovered that the painting in question, your painting, was valuable? In Peregrine Island, the Peregrine family’s lives are turned upside-down one summer when so-called “art experts” appear on the doorstep of their Connecticut island home to appraise a favorite heirloom painting. When incriminating papers—and other paintings—are discovered behind the painting in question, the appraisal turns into a full-fledged investigation. Flattered at first by the art museum’s unanticipated interest, the family members quickly change their attitudes with the arrival of detectives on their terrace and the illusory but repeated appearance of a stranger reported to be concealed in a cove. The now-antagonistic family—grandmother, mother, and child—consequently begin to suspect one another, as well as the shady newcomers in their midst. As the summer progresses and the investigation reveals facts about the Peregrines’ past that even they didn’t know, they learn that people are not always who they appear to be—themselves not excluded—and art is often a reflection of their own lives. More important, in uncovering the secret of the painting they come to realize that the love each unconsciously sought has been right in front of them all along. Though Peregrine Island is driven by a mystery, it is as much characterized by its ever-present sense of spiritualism, accentuated by the symbolism of the Sound, the soul of relationships, and the wisdom of the very young and the very old. Welcome to Boozy Book Club: MOVIE MONTH! In this edition of Boozy Book Club we're talking about books and books to movies. If you really enjoy book to movie adaptations, then this is a really great episode for you to listen to. In March we read The Light Between Oceans and Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children, both of which are heading to the big screen this fall. The Light Between Oceans stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Wiess, and Miss Peregrine's stars Eva Green and was directed by Tim Burton. Both of them look really incredible. So this month, our book clubbers (Beth, Tiffany, Amy and Anne) discussed how movie adaptations affect our reading of the book. How casting choices affect character as well as delving into which characters we had sympathy for or not. This hangout was recorded on April 4, which was a big day in TN world as the season premiere for Outlander was happening in NYC, so we had a bit of FOMO going on. In fact, Boozy Book Club will be taking a bit of a podcast/hangout hiatus while we spend the next few months having weekly Hangoutlander episodes to discuss the new season of our favorite show. So get ready for regular podcast updates. Our first Hangoutlander episode will be Monday, April 11th at 10pm EST. Don’t miss it. RSVP here And if you love Boozy Book Club, please come along with us this month as we read Fellside by MR Carey. It’s the newest thriller from the author or The Girl with All the Gifts, and while we won’t be doing a live discussion, we will be talking about it on the blog and in our group on Goodreads. So enjoy our discussion about using lube as frizz ease, missing out on the Outlander premiere and oh yeah … books to movies.  Watch the Convo instead Join our Book Club on Goodreads RSVP for our Hangoutlander 201!
