The year is 1997. After years of careful planning, Canadian broadcasting consortiums have unleashed upon the public an assortment of new cable channels, all of which are wildly experimental in their attempts to gain your attention. Among these channels is Teletoon, although it is very different from the Teletoon we know today. It is bold, it is ambitious, and it is so determined to get the attention of adult audiences that it is willing to harness the raw power of Manga Entertainment with Late Night Anime. Ashley joins me once again to talk about the four movies that were central to this effort: Ninja Scroll, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, Patlabor: The Movie and Patlabor 2: The Movie. What an age it was.

Was geschieht hier wohl? A review of Studio Gainax's first anime film.
A review of Gainax's first major work after Honneamise.
Space. They say it's a sort of frontier. So we're going there this week, looking at the interstellar epic The Expanse and the meditative film from Studio Gainax, 1987's 'Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise.' Two stories in similar genre, were they equally loved? We shall see. Also this week! Sexism is winning the week, Marvel has a terrible NYCC, Fall anime is here, Jordan's had it with the kids (again) and all the chit chat and updates you can handle. Thanks for hanging, y'all! CW: Discussion of scenes of sexual assault from the film itself. For our 300th episode, the lovely Lauren Faits of the upcoming podcast She-Ra: Progressive of Power and Our Fair City joins us to talk about the cult 1987 anime film Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise! From the makers of Evangelion, Honneamise is an early example of the fluid animation and mature themes that would fuel the anime craze of the 90s in the US. Set in an alternate Earth in which two steampunk societies gear up for war, the film follows a young man named Shiro and his desire to go the stars. Apart from one unfortunate scene, the film's a fascinating subject for discussion, so check out the episode along with our custom cocktail and drinking game!
On this episode, Kate, Ed, and Dennis go over Gainax's first theatrical release Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise. Kate goes over why she chose it due to a bad convention experience. Yes only the latest and greatest anime here on the OSMcast! Now you may ask yourself: “I just possibly celebrated the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and/or got some awesome swag from Santa! What could be even better?!” The answer: A podcast from the OSMcast_!_ all about the anime movie Akira! Listen now in the comfort of your own home! Take it for on the car ride back home from those obnoxious aliens relatives! Or use it to ring in the new year. The manga is pretty good stuff, too! This podcast about the movie adaptation of the manga both written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo is _both _multi-faceted _and _enjoyable no matter what the circumstances might be! It’s not like this movie hasn’t been talked to death or anything! OSMnotes So after recording this podcast and looking where one might want to pick this movie up, we discovered that while the Blu-ray edition is plentiful and can be bought most anywhere, Bandai (via their Honneamise label) never bothered to release an equivalent DVD version. That means the last DVD version of Akira made on DVD was the Geneon Signature Series one released in 2004. Hey remember these guys? Yeah, that’s right. Geneon. On the plus side Right Stuf has it for cheap! Or you could also start buying the manga, as Kodansha has resumed publishing rights the manga series and has put out the first volume, with the rest being released in 2010. Till next week (hopefully)!
At this point, all four panellists were all students. And, since we went to different schools, schedules got confused and Richard was accidentally left out of this one as Drew thought he was studying for an upcoming exam. Hosts: Drew Sutton, Jason Brown and Marc Smazik. Again leaving out the roundtable to return at a later date, we review two late 1980s science fiction classics, first is GAINAX's Wings of Honneamise (1987), which conveniently gets changed to Wings of Hummas and Mayonaise because that's easier to pronounce. Then we review 1989's Venus Wars.
