This week on Film Detectives, we dive into two wildly different yet thematically connected sci-fi cult classics: Capricorn One (1977) and Dark Star (1974). One is a gripping government conspiracy thriller about a faked Mars landing, the other a low-budget, absurdist space odyssey with a talking bomb and existential dread. We unpack the paranoia, satire, and societal mistrust that fuel both films, and explore how they reflect 1970s skepticism toward authority, the space race, and media manipulation. From Peter Hyams' tense realism to John Carpenter's surreal humor, these films might seem worlds apart—but they're both brilliant time capsules of cinematic rebellion. Buckle up for deep cuts, behind-the-scenes trivia, and our take on why these forgotten gems still matter today. The Moon Landing Conspiracy On July 20, 1969, the world watched as Apollo 11 astronauts walked on the Moon—or so we've been told. For decades, skeptics have argued that the Moon landing was an elaborate hoax staged by NASA. From the waving flag to missing stars and suspicious shadows, conspiracy theories persist. In this episode, we break down the biggest claims, explore how the hoax theory began, and look at the hard evidence for and against one of history's greatest achievements. Episode Highlights: The Historic Achievement Apollo 11 Overview: Launched July 16, 1969; Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins on board; first Moon landing on July 20; safe return on July 24. The Space Race: The U.S. rushed to beat the Soviet Union after JFK's 1961 challenge to land a man on the Moon. Global Impact: 600 million people watched live, solidifying U.S. dominance in space and fueling decades of exploration. The Birth of the Moon Hoax Theory Bill Kaysing's 1976 book We Never Went to the Moon kickstarted the conspiracy. Distrust in the government (post-Vietnam, post-Watergate) fueled skepticism. Hollywood influence: Capricorn One (1978) imagined a faked Mars landing, adding to public doubts. Common Conspiracy Claims The Waving Flag – Why does it move with no wind? No Stars in Photos – Shouldn't space be full of them? Strange Shadows – Do multiple light sources suggest a studio set? Van Allen Radiation Belts – Could astronauts survive the radiation? No Impact Crater – The Lunar Module's engine left no visible blast mark. Identical Backgrounds – Different Apollo photos show eerily similar landscapes. The Evidence Supporting the Landing Lunar Samples: 842 lbs of Moon rocks with unique properties. Third-Party Tracking: Global observatories, including the Soviet Union, tracked Apollo missions. Retroreflectors: Devices left on the Moon still used for laser distance measurements today. Simpson, Hal Holbrook, Karen Black, Telly Savalas, David Huddleston, David Doyle, Lee Bryant, Denise Nicholas, Robert Walden, James Sikking, Alan Fudge, James Karen, Virginia Kaiser, Nancy Malone, Hank Stohl, Norman Bartold Directed by: Peter Hyams Recorded on 2024-11-19
Coming out more than sixteen years after its beloved predecessor (2001: A Space Odyssey), this might have been the very first "Legacy Sequel." Also whereas the first film was directed by the late great cinema legend Stanley Kubrick, this one was helmed by journeyman director Peter Hyams (Running Scared, Capricorn One, Timecop) who in tandem with the author (Arthur C. Clarke) of the original source material was determined to craft a more conventional story as opposed to the ground-breaking 1968 classic which was much more abstract in it structure and tone. Picking up nine years after the events of that first film, we follow Dr. Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) who planned that previous mission of the USS Discovery to Jupiter where those onboard discovered the mysterious "Monolith." Dr. Floyd is determined to find out what exactly transpired so he hitches a ride with a Soviet mission there commanded by Captain Tanya Kirbuk (Helen Mirren). And what they eventually encounter and discover is...."something wonderful?" Also along for the ride are John Lithgow, Bob Balaban, and Elya Baskin in an epic sci-fi adventure which might not approach the majesty of its predecessor but actually holds up better as pure entertainment, now forty years after it was first released in theaters.

Capricorn One—the first manned mission to Mars—is on the launch pad. Just before liftoff, astronauts Charles Brubaker, Peter Willis, and John Walker are suddenly removed from the spacecraft. Bewildered, they are flown to an abandoned military base in the desert. The launch proceeds on schedule, with the public unaware the spacecraft is empty. At the base, NASA official James Kelloway informs the astronauts that a faulty life-support system would have killed them in-flight. He says they must help counterfeit the televised footage during the flight to and from Mars. Another failed space mission would result in NASA's funding being cut and private contractors losing millions in profits. Kelloway threatens their families to force their cooperation. The astronauts remain captive during the flight and appear to be filmed after landing on Mars, although they are actually inside of a makeshift TV studio at the base. At the command center, only a few officials know about the conspiracy until an alert technician, Elliot Whitter, notices that ground control receives the crew's televised transmissions before the spacecraft telemetry arrives. Whitter reports this to his supervisors, including Kelloway, but is told it is due to a faulty workstation. Whitter partially shares his concerns with a TV journalist friend, Robert Caulfield. Whitter suddenly vanishes, and when Caulfield goes to Whitter's apartment the next day, he discovers someone else living there and that all evidence of Whitter's recent life has been erased. As Caulfield investigates, several attempts are made on his life. Upon returning to Earth, the empty spacecraft burns up during atmospheric reentry due to a faulty heat shield, which would have killed the astronauts had they been on board. The astronauts realize officials will need to kill them to keep the hoax a secret. They escape in a small jet which quickly runs out of fuel, forcing a crash-landing in the desert. They split up on foot to increase their chances of finding help and exposing the plot. Kelloway sends helicopters after them. Willis and Walker are found, while Brubaker evades capture. Caulfield interviews Brubaker's "widow" after reviewing a televised conversation between the astronauts and their wives. Mrs. Brubaker had seemed confused when her husband mentioned their last family vacation. She explains that the family had actually gone to a different location, where a western movie was being filmed. Brubaker was intrigued by how special effects and technology made it seem real. Caulfield believes Brubaker would never make such a mistake and may have been sending his wife a message. Caulfield goes to the deserted western movie set and is shot at. As he investigates further, federal agents break into his home, arresting him for possessing cocaine that they planted there. His exasperated boss bails Caulfield out, then fires him. A reporter friend tells Caulfield about an abandoned military base located 300 miles (480 km) from Houston. The base is deserted, but Caulfield finds Brubaker's necklace and medallion and concludes the astronauts were there. Caulfield hires a crop-dusting pilot named Albain to search the desert. They spot and follow two helicopters to a closed isolated gas station where Brubaker is hiding. They rescue him as he attempts to escape his pursuers. The helicopters chase their plane through a canyon but crash when Albain blinds them with crop spray. Ultimately, Caulfield and Brubaker arrive at the astronauts' memorial service, where Kelloway and Brubaker's wife see them and live network TV coverage exposes the truth. The audience is left to imagine the fallout.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The first is The Silent Partner (1978), a 1978 Canadian thriller film directed by Daryl Duke and starring Elliott Gould, Christopher Plummer, and Susannah York. The second is Capricorn One (1977), a 1977 British-produced American thriller film in which a reporter discovers that a supposed Mars landing by a crewed mission to the planet has been faked via a conspiracy involving the government and—under duress—the crew themselves. This month Nelson brings to the table a film Longino has nether seen nor heard of: the 70s conspiracy theory thriller, Capricorn One. Jay and Aspasia take a philosophical approach to the notion of a conscience Universe. In 2017 two Italian scientists utilising images from the James Webb and Hubble telescopes drew a parallel between the neurological structure of the human brain and the cosmic constellations in the universe. If we are part of a conscience cosmos should we be exploiting it and can we really live on other planets. 52 years later are we really back on the moon or is this just the storyboard that we are witnessing for the production of the sequel to "Capricorn One".
The film writer Brandon Streussnig (Vulture, Fangoria, GQ) joins the pod for a discussion about the undersung director Peter Hyams through four of his science fiction movies across a career full of genre work, films that reveal a singular style can be applied to a craftsman, a former Chicago newsman turned director who also (controversially for his industry) served as his own cinematographer. His all-star conspiracy theory thriller Capricorn One (1977) established Hyams as a filmmaker who could fuse suspense and science-fiction. He would follow this with 1981's Outland, a hybrid of Alien and High Noon starring Sean Connery, criticized at the time for being derivative but which rips when seen today, a dystopic vision of a future world ravaged by capitalism on steroids that actually anticipated the themes and production design of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner the following year. Brandon and I make the case for 2010, Hyams' 1984 sequel to Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, as a worthy followup if not an essential work, offering a hopeful and utopic vision of man's future contrasted against Kubrick's colder take. Set against the topical US/Soviet arms race of the Reagan era and packed with thrills, it's a much better film than you've been led to believe. And of course there's Timecop, the biggest hit Jean-Claude Van Damme ever had. This episode means to introduce you to the work of Peter Hyams, solid entertainments across many genres and ripe for rediscovery. What's this, a well-regarded science fiction conspiracy thriller which featured an all-star cast and yet no one remembers it?? Well yeah if this film happens to come out the same year as Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind....two BEHEMETHS from this era directed by master filmmakers/household names George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg respectively. Whereas this was directed by Peter Hyams....who actually built up a nice filmography himself over the next ten years including Running Scared, Outland, and 2010: The Year We Make Contact. And this being his breakout success which he also wrote, it has ONE hell of a doozy of a plot....Three astronauts (James Brolin, Sam Waterston, O.J. Simpson) are about to embark on a TRULY historic adventure, THE first manned mission to the planet of Mars! Except they're not actually going to Mars....they're supposed to stay on Earth and ONLY they are to know this. Hmmm....it's a massive space program conspiracy lead by the late, great Hal Holbrook who is orchestrating it from NASA. Fortunately there is ONE brave reporter who is out to uncover the truth and he's played by Elliott Gould. :) And of course don't underestimate the crazy aerial hijinks of a crazy crop-duster pilot played by the late, great Telly Savalas too while you're you're at it. :) Admit to yourself that it sounds intriguing. "Would you be shocked to find out the greatest moment in human history may not have happened at all?" Invasion of the Remake investigates the first manned flight to Mars in Peter Hyams' Capricorn One (1977). All is not well as corporate greed puts the mission and the entire space program at risk and an unthinkable plan is hatched to save the program from being scrapped entirely. Originally recorded for 'The Mind Renewed' podcast and hosted by Julian Charles, this is a four-way discussion, also including Mark Campbell and Frank Johnson, about the 1978 conspiracy thriller Capricorn One, starring Elliott Gould, James Brolin, Branda Vaccaro and Hal Holbrook and written and directed by Peter Hyams. About to embark upon the first crewed mission to Mars, three NASA astronauts (played by James Brolin, Sam Waterston and OJ Simpson) find themselves suddenly removed from their command module, minutes before lift-off, and flown to a secret desert base. There they learn of an outrageous plan, hatched by establishment conspirators, to fake the Mars landing using a TV studio, props and themselves as actors—a deception in which they are forced to be complicit. Picking up on the trail of the conspiracy is news reporter Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould), who goes further and further down the proverbial Rabbit Hole as he tries to make sense of the increasing anomalies. But not all goes well—(or, perhaps, not all seems to go well)—with the plan. Upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, the astronauts' (crewless) module breaks up. Now, they are officially dead—their existence a threat to the lying narrative. Their only hope is to escape and reveal the plot to an incredulous world. These are all questions that swirl in the minds of the conspiratorial and also in the cave this time as we look at two EXCELLENT conspiracy-related films. We start off with 1974's The Parallax View, directed by the legendary Alan J. Pakula and starring the also-legendary Warren Beatty. This is such a great piece of 70's cinema and is filled with wonderful moments, great acting and incredible dialogue. We follow that up with 1977's Capricorn One from ANOTHER legend, Mr. Peter Hyams and featuring a star-studded cast headed up by Hal Holbrook, James Brolin and Elliott Gould! It is the tale of a planned mission to the planet Mars which is secretly cancelled and faked because of safety issues. The astronauts find themselves in grave danger because they know too much and an amazing chase through the desert ensues. This is awesome, pulpy fun that still manages to be smart. We loved both of these movies and recommend them heartily! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Bart Sibrel joins the darkside to talk about his incredible journey discovering the truth about the fraudulent NASA Apollo moon landings. Bart was abducted, punched in the face by Buzz Aldrin, and had a death threat from Edgar Mitchell. Through that adversity Bart still managed to create 2 very popular documentaries (available below) and release his new book "Moon Man: The True Story of a Filmmaker on the CIA Hit List." The evidence is damning. We spoke for 90 minutes about the evidence, the Apollo 1 fire, Stanley Kubrick, Capricorn One, Apollo 13, aliens, whats next and finding God. Genuinely nice guy and very engaging. For the 10th of our TMR Movie Roundtables we welcome back our good friends Mark Campbell, Frank Johnson and Antony Rotunno for a four-way discussion on the 1978 conspiracy thriller, Capricorn One, starring Elliott Gould, James Brolin, Branda Vaccaro and Hal Holbrook, written and directed by Peter Hyams. Picking up on the trail of the conspiracy is news reporter Robert Caulfield (Elliott Gould), who goes further and further down the proverbial Rabbit Hole as tries to make sense of the increasing anomalies. Join us as we discuss the film's production, ponder its the "conspiracy" themes, and ask the question: Did "we" really go to the Moon? Horny reporter Elliott Gould rescues astronaut James Brolin after the government fakes a manned mission to Mars. Yes, it's a journalism movie starring BOTH Barbra Streisand husbands. Tara goes on a rant about space jagweeds. Jacob is a zodiac killer. Telly Savalas calls people perverts. Plus, the Universal Soldier and Friends connection. Box Office Bylines isn't a podcast about movies about journalism. No one by that name has ever lived here.
