Watch along at https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRkso3AeKZUk2kT_iXfXP8PCb6iaufS48&si=7nKxhyHpiA2z0QQm Episode 10: "Tales from the Cryptkeeper" The popular cult horror comic books from the 1950s are adapted in this cartoon anthology series. Tales from the Cryptkeeper is an animated horror children's television series made by Canadian studio Nelvana. The series was broadcast on ABC in the United States, and on ITV in the United Kingdom. It is based on the 1950s EC Comics series Tales from the Crypt and the live action television series of the same name, which aired concurrently on HBO. Intended for children, Tales from the Cryptkeeper is significantly milder than its live-action counterpart, and all blood, gore, profanity and sexual content are completely removed to be more appropriate for the target audience. Most episodes take place within the fictional city of Gravenhurst, California. The series details the Cryptkeeper telling more kid-friendly horror stories to the viewers, each with a teachable lesson. The second season has the Cryptkeeper at constant odds with rivals, and fellow EC Comics horror hosts, the Vault-Keeper and the Old Witch, who continually try to steal the show from him as they didn't have one of their own, only to have their plans backfire. The Cryptkeeper can be found in different locales than his mansion, as he tries to elude his foes. The third and final season aired in 1999. Unlike the first two seasons, it, under New Tales from the Cryptkeeper, aired on Teletoon in Canada and on CBS in the United States. This season sees the Cryptkeeper taking a more active role, usually by setting up situations to teach frightening lessons to kids with severe character flaws. Like...whatever, it's Daft Planet. On this week's podcast, we are looking back at a time when the vibe of the young generation was blasé, sarcastic, and all-around disaffected, which made it very hard to make cartoons that spoke to them. In the early 2000s, Teletoon tried to court this demographic with a flash-animated, pop culture-obsessed portrait of dispassionate teens who are too cool to care...even about a Requiem for a Dream spiral of addiction for video games and boy band music. It's cool, I guess, I don't know. Episode covered for the podcast is Episode 5 "Requiem for a Game." Directed by Jon Minnis and written by Brent Donnelly and Derry Smith. Original airdate October 10, 2002. Watch along at https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRkso3AeKZUk2kT_iXfXP8PCb6iaufS48&si=7nKxhyHpiA2z0QQm Episode 5 "Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles" In this adaption of Robert Heinlein's novel, we follow the adventures of a squad of troops as they fight in a war of survival against merciless alien invaders. Facing constant danger, they are the ones who have to do the thankless task of facing the enemy head on, and for the sake of humanity, they must prevail. The series aired for one season in the syndicated Bohbot Kids Network block beginning in August 1999 in the United States and Canada. It was later picked up by the Sci-Fi Channel in the U.S. (along with the rest of the BKN block) and Teletoon in Canada. The show combines elements of the 1997 film and the original novel, such as the extraterrestrial race known as the Skinnies, powered armor suits and drop pods. The series also adds some original elements, while omitting the political aspects of the original work and film. It is an interesting coincidence that the imminent death of the Teletoon brand on English-language television lined up with our long-awaited discussion of Cybersix, perhaps their finest program, but I'm more than happy to make this my tribute. A 1999 collaboration between TMS and NOA Network of Animation based on a surprisingly visceral Argentinian comic, I would like to think that this show needs no introduction. Cybersix represents an apex for international animated co-productions that has not been reached before or since. To say that opinions are divided on Cardcaptors would be an understatement. To those who were more attuned to anime fandom in 2000, Nelvana's incredibly loose adaptation of Cardcaptor Sakura was living evidence of why Canadian companies should not be allowed to wholly license and distribute anime. To the kids who didn't listen to weird adults on the internet, however, Teletoon's extended run of the show was a childhood landmark. Eryn and Rin-taichou (Rin-senpai at the time of this recording) join me to discuss the highs, the lows and the mysterious Europop connections of Cardcaptors, because I don't think anyone else will!

Deanna Kent spent her childhood making up treasure maps for her family (there are several hundred pennies still buried across the prairies of Western Canada). Realizing that treasure mapping mixed well with story-crafting, she made that her path. After teaching English for a decade, she moved on to work as a writer for the Walt Disney Company. For almost ten years, she worked at the Kelowna, Canada studio, first as a narrative designer for a growing interactive kids’ world. At Club Penguin, which grew into the number one MMO for kids, from 2008-2012, for a captivated audience of seven-twelve year olds, she helped to build and execute the big-picture story and sub-brands where their audience grew to over 200 million registered penguins in 190 countries. After five years, she switched roles and worked her way up to Sr. Writer for Brand and Marketing for the larger Disney Interactive division, where she was privileged to work with high performing teams and world-class franchises like Lucas, Pixar, Muppets, and more. More than anything, Deanna loves cross-discipline collaboration, and creating engaging, immersive experiences. When she grows up, she wants to be Edna Mode.Neil Hooson was drawing on the back of his dad’s work papers since he could hold a pencil. After graduating, he took a detour through college where he earned a mathematics degree, but quickly found his way back to art through animation. He has worked as an illustrator, character designer, motion designer, and animator, for brands like Saatchi & Saatchi, Family Channel, Teletoon and more, but decided his passion was for creating story-rich content for kids and kids at heart. For almost a decade at the Walt Disney Company, Neil worked to bring story to life with Club Penguin, the number one MMO for kids. From 2008-2014, for a growing audience of seven-twelve year olds, Neil collaborated to build and execute the big-picture story and sub-brands where their audience grew to over over 200 million registered penguins in 190 countries. As part of the story and vis dev team, his work on one of their most popular sub-brands, Card-Jitsu, grew it into a multi-layered experience that boasted rich story, online games, and real-world ties. In 2014, Neil moved into an Art Director role for Brand and Marketing for the Walt Disney Company Interactive division, where he worked with franchises such as Pixar, Star Wars, and more. He loves story, and to experiment with various art styles and techniques to bring ideas and characters to life. Currently he’s Art Director for Yeti Farm Creative, an animation studio in Kelowna. Deanna Kent and Neil Hooson worked together at the Walt Disney Company for almost a decade, first on Club Penguin—a virtual world for kids, and then in brand and marketing with a variety of franchises like Lucas, Pixar, Tron, and more. They're passionate about experience design (digital and physical) and have recently worked with a talented team to create story and art for the new Vancouver Teck Acute Care Centre for kids. These days, Neil works as an Art Director at Yeti Farm and Deanna works as a Writer and Marketing Manager at Carebook. At night, they work on their own wild, creative ideas. Now that the Snazzy Cat Capers books 1-3 are handed over to their publisher, they’re dreaming up a few new projects. Episode 52: How Director Dave Thomas Carved Out A Career In Stop Motion In Toronto

This episode features Dave Thomas, a Director, Creator, and Animator on how he carved out a path in stop motion in Toronto. You’ll also learn: *The kind of ingenuity it takes to get paid for something you love to do *How to get studios to notice you when you’re just starting out *Why studios aren’t investing in stop motion and what it would take for them to do so More about Dave Thomas: Drawing and dreaming since childhood, Dave’s original plans were to go into physics… but then he changed his mind. He also originally had no plans to enter the world of animation and enrolled in Sheridan College’s Media Arts program, majoring in Film Production. However, he started to experiment with plasticine animation in first year and got bitten by the animation bug. He realized that stop-motion is an exciting mix of live-action film principles and elements (real cameras, lights, sets) and the complete control of frame-by-frame animation. Over the years, Dave has directed award-winning series, specials, show opens and commercials created in an array of techniques and mediums. He has worked in stopmo, 2D, pixellation, traditional cutout, and hybrid productions for projects that range from preschool to adult. Always eager for new challenges and creative fun, he's also worked in show development, written scripts, story edited, designed characters and sets, animated a whole bunch of critters and objects (including a real lobster), and made short films of his own. His list of project clients include Disney, Warner Brothers, Nickelodeon, ABC Family, MTV2, CBC, Teletoon, HBO Family and Fisher-Price. He has given talks at colleges, schools and panels on animation and mentors 4rth year animation students through their final thesis films. Dave has been known to go for hours without food or water while drawing funny pictures and making stuff.

The year is 1997. After years of careful planning, Canadian broadcasting consortiums have unleashed upon the public an assortment of new cable channels, all of which are wildly experimental in their attempts to gain your attention. Among these channels is Teletoon, although it is very different from the Teletoon we know today. It is bold, it is ambitious, and it is so determined to get the attention of adult audiences that it is willing to harness the raw power of Manga Entertainment with Late Night Anime. Ashley joins me once again to talk about the four movies that were central to this effort: Ninja Scroll, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, Patlabor: The Movie and Patlabor 2: The Movie.
