Giant robots… What a concept! Who would have thought? Well, sure, lots of people have. In fact, we have talked about those great big ol' hunks of metal in animation a few times on this podcast before! Now? This time is no different. Okay, maybe a little bit different. But that's just the kind of show that Brave Bang Bravern! is. Different. Or maybe… Perhaps not so much? In any case, it sure was a show directed by the great Masami Obari and animated by the fine folks over at CygamesPictures. We also dig into the video games Suikoden I & 2 HD Remaster, the new Shonen Jump manga Star of Beethoven, and YouTube guy Mugiwara No Goofy.OSMnotesBrave Bang Bravern! is one helluva show, and you should go watch it!Brave Bang Bravern! Episode 57 show notes Content Warning: This episode discusses the horrors of war, systemic racism, and trauma. Please use discretion while listening. In this episode of the Kinky Nerdy Poly Podcast, M and G dive deep into 86, a mecha anime that explores war, systemic racism, and the human spirit in a dystopian society. G shares why this anime ranks as one of their recent favorites (and why it is their "sad mecha anime"), and M reflects on what makes 86 so compelling with respect to its heavy themes. G and M tackle philosophical questions: What does it mean to challenge systemic injustices? How does trauma shape communities under duress? And what lessons can we draw from science fiction to confront our present-day challenges? Key topics include: What is 86?: A breakdown of the anime's premise, including the Republic of San Magnolia, the marginalized "86," and the robotic enemy Legion. The Role of War and Racism: How 86 uses science fiction to critique systemic racism, societal complicity, and the trauma of war. Character Analysis: Discussions about Major Vladilena "Lena" Milizé's savior complex and growth, and Shin "Undertaker" Nouzen's immense burden as the leader of Spearhead Squadron. Ethics of Autonomous Weapons: Timely reflections on the implications of AI and remotely controlled weapons in real-world warfare. Sources and Mentions from the Episode: 86 (anime adaptation) produced by A-1 Pictures, based on the light novel series by Asato Asato. Can a mecha anime be both a political thriller and an emotional rollercoaster? Join us as we dissect the classic 2006 series "Code Geass" and uncover the layers of its intricate plot that resembles a grand chess game infused with political intrigue, giant robots, and the machinations of a corrupt royal family. We focus on Lelouch V Britannia, whose quest for revenge against his tyrannical family sets the stage for a gripping narrative, all while leading the resistance group known as the Black Knights in an alternate history setting where Britannia has conquered America, China, and Europe. From the impact of his mother's murder to his sister Nunnally's trauma, we explore the emotional complexities driving Lelouch's rebellion.Ever been confused by alternate timelines in an anime series? We'll guide you through the tangled web of "Code Geass," shedding light on how key events and character developments differ between the original timeline and the alternate ones introduced in the three-film compilation and "Lelouch of the Resurrection." Discover how pivotal moments like Lelouch's staged death and surprising resurrections impact the story. We also delve into the emotional turmoil and guilt surrounding characters like Ash and Jugo, ensuring our discussion stays engaging with unexpected twists and deep character interactions. How do characters like Lelouch measure up against other anime icons? We debate Lelouch's strategic mind, comparing him to Ayanokoji from "Classroom of the Elite" and Eren Yeager from "Attack on Titan." Our conversation dives into the ethical dilemmas and emotional consequences of Lelouch's actions, scrutinizing the fine line between genius and overextension. Additionally, we touch upon the representation of dark-skinned characters in anime, giving "Code Geass" a nod for its inclusivity. Our episode wraps up with musings on the themes of fame, money, and privilege, examining how they shape the motivations and arcs of the characters in this multifaceted series. Tune in for a rich and captivating discussion that will keep you hooked from start to finish.Text us for feedback and recommendations for future episodes!Support the showWe thank everyone for listening to our podcast! Well folks, we did it. We reviewed the thrilling conclusion to Neon Genesis Evangelion without watching the actual show. The 3 of us did hardly any research beforehand and just tried to dive in and analyze it as a standalone movie. Was this a good idea? Obviously not. Was it enjoyable? Sorta. Was this the dumbest thing we have ever done on this podcast? Maybe. For the uninitiated, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a moody 90s anime that serves as a deconstruction of the "Mecha Anime" genre. If you don't know what that means, that's okay because we barely did either. This movie is a redo of the original anime ending which had been panned by fans and critics alike. This movie is regarded as the "proper" ending for the beloved series and is thought of as one of the best conclusions for an anime narrative arc. Too bad we had no idea. Thanks for stopping by!

Mecha anime pretty much always concerns the characters in it. Although this may sound like a fact to some, other people have a different viewpoint. In this episode of the podcast, I attempt to counter the idea that some mecha anime are focused mostly on 'the mechas' while others do on 'the characters'. Get In The Mecha Season 2 starts now! *Once again, apologies for the very late episode - trying to get back into the regular rhythm of things and avoid burnout in the process. Bare with me! What's this? Ash Beardguy and SentaiFive are back with a new episode of Build Casters? On this episode, our Melanated Mecha Bros dissect what is arguably the most important Mecha Anime news in the past few years, Kyōkai Senki, Sunrise's first Non-Gundam Mecha property since Cross Ange: Rondo of Angel and Dragon, which aired almost 7 years ago! Although happy with the news, Ash is initially pessimistic about the eventual quality of the show, based on staffing choices, whereas Fives is far more optimistic. Someone has to play Mecha Bad Cop! One thing they both agree on is that the Mecha Design is going to be out of this world! Ash also discusses Gundam Build Real, the upcoming live action addition to the "Gundam Build" franchise! In this episode, Weekly Suit Gundam goes beyond its original missive of reviewing the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam by jumping ahead for a deep dive with the second series in the Gundam franchise, and one of the most beloved: Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, the sequel set in 0087 that sees new protagonist Kamille Bidan joining forces with the AEUG – and several familiar faces, including the mysterious, sunglass-wearing Quattro Bajeena – to fight against the fascistic takeover of the Earth Federation by the evil Titans. Now that Jonathan's binged the entire 50-episode series in just over a week, we have a lot to talk about, from how beautifully this series functions as a bold, thoughtful sequel to the original, to its blend of new and returning characters, to how impactfully its political content resonates with our current moment. It's one of the greatest anime series of all time – with as dark an ending as you're ever likely to see – and that's more than enough for a packed episode's worth of discussion. Topic: Mecha Anime Review Last week we discussed Mecha Anime, the difference between a Super/Giant Robot series and a Real Robot series. This week, we have two shows that are indicative of both genre of Mecha Anime, so lets see which one liked the most! StarDriver Premise: Tells the story of three high school students who safe guard the world from dangerous alien mecha from escaping in to our time. Set on fictional island of Southern Cross Island, the island is home to powerful mechanical creatures called Cybodies that have been hidden away and protected by four Maidens of the island. Once one of the Maiden’s seals is broken, it allows those with marks, or masks, to pilot these Cybodies in what’s known as Zero Time, a realm where only they can exist. If all four Maiden’s seals are broken, they’ll allow the Cybodies to exit from Zero Time and then take over the world. Stopping them is Takuto and his mysterious Tauburn Cybody, which holds back the Glittering Crux Brigade from succeeding in their plans. Phases Depending on how many maiden seals are broken, allows for piloting of Cybodies and magical abilities: Phase 1: No maiden seals broken, limited access to magical powers like healing, illusions, mind control, etc Phase 2: One Maiden seal broken, access to Cybodies via piloting system in Zero Time Phase 3: Two Maiden Seal Broken, Only those with marks/masks can pilot Cybodies directly via mecha Phase 4: Three Maiden Seals broken, gives access to godlike powers, but pilots become trapped in Zero Time is cybodies are destroyed, release of King Cybody Samekh Phase 5: Cybodies gain access to our world Main Characters Takuto Tsunashi (Red Hair) Pilots Tauburn Unique as their Tauburn acts like Phase 3 machines and always stays more powerful than other Cybodies Dual wields Star Swords Cheerful, Energetic, Optimistic, Pure Hearted “Galactic Bishounen” or “Galactic Pretty Boy” Wako Agemaki (Short Yellow Hair) South Maiden Relatively Innocent, teasing Fully Aware of her status as a Maiden when she’s a child Engaged to Sugata as family tradition Sugata Shindo (Blue hair) Cool, Intelligent, Reserved Rivalry with Takuto Pilots King Cybody Samekh Joins Glittering Crux Brigade at one point Each Cybody/Mark is named after a letter in the Phoenician alphabet, which multiple modern Semetic abjads are derived from, notably Hebrew and Aramaic. Reasons to enjoy the show: Weird, even among anime A good story, no intentional allegories or meaning Good directing Great sound track Gundam Unicorn Premise: Set in 0096 UC(Universal Century), story tell of Banagher Links, a young Anaheim Electrics student who accidentally gets involved with Audrey Burne in her attempt to receive the Laplace Box. The Laplace Box holds the key to spacenoid freedom and eventual succession of humanity; but forces from the Federation aim to keep the box hidden in order to safe guard their own power. Aided is the Unicorn Gundam, a normal looking machine until a potential Newtype appears, allowing it to transform and open its armor to reveal its Gundam form. Main Characters Banagher Links Pilots the RX-01 Unicorn Gundam Biometric linked to Banagher Considered the Key to the Laplace Box, tests pilot if they are worthy to receive box Unique that it starts standard looking and reveals its Gundam nature Entire Frame is build of Pyscho-Frame, allowing pilot to move the Gundam without inputs NT-D = Newtype Destoryer system, designed to release limiters Good person at heart, trying to do the right thing Pulled between not wanting the Gundam or Fighting, but learns that life doesn’t allow us to choose so we must make do with what happens to us and make something good out of it In Love, or Need to protect, Audrey Audrey Burne, (Mineva Lao Zabi) Grand-daughter and last surviving of the Zabi Family, leaders of the Principality of Zeon. Pacifist in Nature, Noble, Upright, and Honorable Used the name Audrey to hide Identity from others, illusion to Audrey Hepburn Considered a Princess by Spacenoids/Zeon Not interested in leading/adoption the Zeonic movement or leadership, acts to bring peace and true to all. Wants the Box so that Spacenoids will have a right to evolve and be a part of the Federation, thus bringing everyone together. Full Frontal Char Anology, “Second Coming of the Red Comit”, thought to be Char Anzable himself In reality, a genetically altered Cyber Newtype copy of Char. Pilots MSN-06S Sinanju Used as test bed for Gundam Unicorn Red in color Gifted Pilot, Charismatic Leader Intends to use power of Laplace Box to weaken Federation and allow Spacenoids to self govern, forcing the Earth Sphere to be subservient to Spacenoids instead. Laplace Box? Laplace Box is a closely guarded secret by the Vist Family/Foundation, which allows them to have unfettered power within the Federation due to its contents. Members of the family use it to pull strings and control government officials within Federation. Senior Members of Vist Family plan to reveal the box the world, but want to ensure it’s given to some who will use the box for noble purposes. Gundam Unicorn is designed to test someone. Great Example of traditional Gundam Story No side is perfect/right Everyone has an agenda Starts in Space, heads to Earth, returns to Space Great analogs for Char and Amuro Ray Helps if you know previous series, not necessary to enjoy Good character development
Topic: Mecha Anime This week, Mom is out on Vacation, traveling the world as usual. So we Invited my Little Brother to join us. When asked what he wanted to learn about, Mecha Anime was what he said. So here we go. A primer on Mecha Anime! Tutorial: Mecha Anime: Any anime/manga/media where robots exist within a show, and are important to the story being told. Robot = Mech/Mecha Two Major Sub-Categories: Super/Giant Robo/Robot Real Robot History: 70s – Rise of Super/Giant Robot Series Mecha shows easier to handle because you don’t need to draw faces. Easier to produce in 70s. Shows largely not about war/conflicts between humans. Mazinger Z (1972) Dr Hell and Dr. Kabuto find ancient robots buried underground. Hell decides to use the robots to control the world, while Dr. Kabuto escapes and builds Mazinger Z before being killed by “half Man, Half woman” Baron Ashura. Robot is passed on his grandson Kouji Kabuto, who fights against Doctor Hell. Spin Offs Great Mazinger (1974) UFO Robot Grendizer (1977) Mazinkaiser (2002) Getter Robo (1974) Three jets become one Super Robo, but can reconfigure in to three different modes Daikū Maryū Gaiking (1976) Dinosaur like base ship where the head takes off and transforms in to Super Robo Gaiking Super/Giant Robot Series Robots are unique, one of kind, un-replaceable Fantastical/Squishy in tech/creation Heroic in Nature Stories are usually involve the Robots more as a major element of the show than a tool Magical/Mystical/Extraterrestrial/Super Science in Nature Lend themselves to Monster of the Week / non-serialized Became stagnant toward end of 80s Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) Also known as (Gundam 0079) During the Universal Century, Human have created colonies in space, but there is unease as spacenoids feel that the Earth Federation won’t allow equal representation, thus Spacenoid rally around the Principality of Zeon and declare their freedom from Earth Federation, starting the “One Year War”. Zeon has mobile suits, which are a ‘HUGE’ tactical advantage. Earth Federation Create the White Base and goes to pick up the new RX-78 Gundam, but Zeon is in tow and attacks the colony, killing most civilians and Federation crew. Many young adults were looking for more mature/serious mecha anime, allowing for Real Robot genre to take over. On this week’s episode of the ‘hey, we’re all just chuggin’ along on that steamboat called freedom’: Gunnar, and Miles (and Andrew still on his visit to Enceladus) find obscure game titles from (now defunct) Steam Greenlight and guess what they are without knowing a single thing about them.
Be sure to attend Our Panel! New Anime for Older Fans Saturday, 5:45PM, Panel 4 - (WEWCC 151A) 2018 is the year of The Mecha at Otakon. Many of the guests are mecha related, and there are a whole slew of mecha panels and workshops every day. Shoji Kawamori's work on Macross and The Vision of Escaflowne alone could give a convention a robotic atmosphere but Nobutoshi Canna, Kanetake Ebikawa, Masaya Matsukaze, Tatsuyuki Nagai, Yoh Yoshinari, Toshifumi Yoshida, and Masahiko Otsuka make it a mecha matsuri. In addition, there's two Final Fantasy concerts, a healthy lineup of other guests, lots of non-mecha programming, and many of the people behind Mystic Messenger. So there is a smorgasbord of content for robot fans but enough for everyone else as well. Beyond that, we are very curious to see how Otakon settles into DC in its second year. It will be interesting to see how many fans come back now that Otakon has shown that its first year in DC went well, how many new people come out thanks to positive buzz, and what Otakon does differently to capture the attention of fandom in general.
