We are so close to the finale of Haunting of Hill House and everything is starting to ramp up. The jump scares. The family drama. The child murder. Wait…the what? In the past, Olivia Crain begins experiencing terrifying paranormal visions in Hill House. She sees haunting premonitions of her children's deaths and is visited by the ghost of Poppy Hill, who convinces her that the outside world will destroy her family. Unraveling under the house's sinister influence, Olivia plans to leave for her sister's home—but never does. On their final night in Hill House, Olivia, trapped in delusion, hosts a tea party in the Red Room for Nell, Luke, and their friend Abigail. Unbeknownst to them, the tea is laced with poison—Olivia's desperate attempt to "protect" them from the horrors of the real world. Hugh intervenes just in time to save Nell and Luke, but Abigail is lost. In the aftermath, he flees with the surviving children as Olivia, desperate to escape her nightmare, plunges from the spiral staircase. We also pick Strange Darling for our next movie review and talk about some (now dated) Scream 7 casting news.
We're a little late starting this year but we are finally back after two snow storms and the winter holidays. We can't think of a better way to jump into the new year than by watching the drama unfold within the Craine family, which is exactly what we're doing this week. Steven and Hugh search for Luke, uncovering dark truths about their family's connection to Hill House. Hugh reveals the ghosts are real and the Crains are the house's prey. Shirley and Theo race to save Luke, reconciling after a ghostly encounter with Nell. Meanwhile, Luke's attempt to burn down Hill House is thwarted by the vengeful spirit of Poppy Hill. Can the family escape its deadly grip?

This week Artsy and I reviewed Studio Ghibli's From Up on Poppy Hill. This movie came out back in 2011 and is classified as a romance/drama movie set in 1963 Yokohama Japan. Artsy and I were both hesitant since our first review of Ghibli was....something, but this was a much more enjoyable experience! Listen in to hear exactly what we thought of this movie and the way they showed change and growth for the school and the romance brewing!Want to join us live? "I spend a lot of time trying to hope that I'll remember little things and how a certain simple thing felt. … Writing is one way of trying to capture that feeling, even if I'm fictionalizing it still.” - Nina LaCourIf Nina LaCour were a drink, she would be a cozy cup of tea. You're not rushing to finish a conversation with Nina. Rather, you are spending time exploring the details. And that is exactly what we did in this episode. The world moves fast. Usually faster than we'd like it to. But writing can gift us the ability to slow a moment down, to digest and analyze at a more intentional pace. For Nina LaCour, writing starts with observing the world around you, getting ready to break it down into words and unravel the meaning on a page. As a new writer, Nina found it best to share those observations through young adult literature after falling in love with it in college. She has since written a picture book, “Mama, Mommy and Me in the Middle,” and returned to an adult novel she shelved early in her career (“Yerba Buena”). More recently, she released "The Apartment House on Poppy Hill," the sweetest chapter book. Nina's work is notably thoughtful and gentle. Her complex topics have resonated deeply with young readers and adults alike (including our own recent guest, Mark Oshiro). She's best known for her novels such as “Hold Still,” "Everything Leads to You," and "We Are Okay," which received the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature. In this episode, she shares her journey to falling in love with young adult literature and how Virginia Woolf helped her find the love of her life. She also explores writing's capacity to uncover the depth within every moment and discusses the importance of queer family representation in literature.***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***In her reading challenge, At the Intersection, Nina has curated a list of books at the intersection of queerness and family. You can find her list and all past reading challenges at thereadingculturepod.com/nina-lacourThis episode's Beanstack Featured Librarian is Faith Rice Mills, librarian at Nelda Sullivan Middle School in Pasadena, Texas. Proving that you can enjoy something whilst simultaneously thinking it's not very good, this week's film doesn't quite get beyond the weight of its casting (though we have to ask whether it needs to!). This week's choice was a great one. And it was one that Jack's wife lived as well. The artwork was on point the music was on point and the story flowed effortlessly. You have the great makings of a story and it is delivered with flying colors. That being said, if you are looking for the usually magical and fantasy world that you have come to expect from Ghibli then this will disappoint you this is a movie that is more so grounded in reality so the expectation should be of that and nothing more. This is a story of growth and it does it in a way that is better than you would expect.Next week's choice is Recovery of an MMO Junkie. Have you seen next week's choice or one of the previous ones? “[God] gave you strength to do what your conscience told you was right; and I don’t see that we need any higher or holier strength than that; or wisdom either." - Elizabeth Gaskell, North and South In this episode Rachel and Phoebe discuss North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. Often dubbed ‘The Victorian Pride and Prejudice’ it is a wonderful love story but also a story of class struggles, the industrial revolution and religious turmoil. Throughout all these themes is Gaskell’s exploration of the importance of following your conscience, maintaining your principles and speaking and acting honestly. Rachel and Phoebe look at the ways in which each of these ‘unfashionable virtues’ are represented in the novel, and why they still apply to us in the modern day. In this very special miniseries of Ghibliotheque, hosts Michael and Jake and producers Steph and Harold travel to Tokyo for a distinctly Ghibli-themed pilgrimage. In this episode, the team visit Studio Ponoc, the animation studio founded by Ghibli veteran Yoshiaki Nishimura (producer of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and When Marnie Was There). There, Michael and Jake talk with Ponoc's Chief of International, Geoffrey Wexler, about his work at both Ponoc and Ghibli presenting films such as Mary and the Witch's Flower, Modest Heroes, The Wind Rises and From Up on Poppy Hill to the world - as well as answering the eternal question: subs or dubs?Find more pics, videos and treats from our trip to Japan at ghibliotheque.tumblr.com.Follow Ghibliotheque on Twitter:@ghibliotheque@MichaelJLeader – Michael@jakehcunningham – JakeProduced by Michael Leader, Jake Cunningham, Harold McShiel and Steph Watts. Connor & Riley just couldn't resist talking about another animated film for this miniseries. They talk how everyday life can look extraordinary in animation when it's in the hands of Isao Takahata. So much beauty and simplicity is portrayed in Only Yesterday, that it's a real shame that Disney didn't release it to the U.S. until 2016.WARNING: Major spoilers for Only YesterdayFollow us: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rulesoftheframe/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rulesoftheframe Twitter: https://twitter.com/RulesOfTheFrameFilms mentioned in this episode: ---------------------------------Only Yesterday (1991) | Dir. A follow-up to one of Ghibli's most controversial releases, From Up On Poppy Hill was director Goro Miyazaki's second crack at the whip after his debut, Tales From Earthsea. But Poppy Hill is a very different proposition: a nostalgic, wholesome, period-set romance that harks back to Ghibli gems Only Yesterday and Whisper Of The Heart. Does he find firmer footing as a filmmaker this time around?Follow Ghibliotheque on Twitter:@ghibliotheque@MichaelJLeader – Michael@jakehcunningham – JakeProduced by Michael Leader, Jake Cunningham, Harold McShiel and Steph Watts. Let's be real, the top tier animation studios consist of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios & Studio Ghibli. Co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has been able to consistently put out great content, with no lack in creativity or imagination. Studio Ghibli produces animated films made for both children and adults, and explores stories and themes not found in other movies. Their films usually tend to have environmental, anti-war themes, and often feature strong female characters. Studio Ghibli was truly ahead of its time, and maybe still is.Join Off the Highway regulars, Chazz, Wes and Sumner, as they are joined by their friend & editor Joli (The Lunch Table Podcast) as they begin a series on the Japanese anime legend, Studio Ghibli.Facebook // Twitter // InstagramFreeway ProductionsStudio Ghibli Feature Films:Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984)Castle in the Sky (1986)Grave of the Fireflies (1988)My Neighbor Totoro (1988)*Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)Only Yesterday (1991)Porco Rosso (1992)Pom Poko (1994)Whisper of the Heart (1995)Princess Mononoke (1997)*My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)Spirited Away (2001)*The Cat Returns (2002)Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)*Tales from Earthsea (2006)Ponyo (2008)The Secret World of Arrietty (2010)From Up on Poppy Hill (2011)The Wind Rises (2013)The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013)When Marnie Was There (2014)How Do You Live? Hey podcasters, welcome to the 60s! Tonight, on Anime Was (Not) A Mistake we raise the flags on Goro’s return to the Studio Ghibli with 2011’s From Up On Poppy Hill. This is a grounded, easy to relate to story about Umi Matsuzaki in her normal everyday life. Running a boarding house, going to school, and dealing with a possible incestual love interest sure is complicated. Beneath this lesser known Ghibli gem, beats the real heart of a believable story centered around young love. Will you help rebuild Quartier Latin? What clubs were you a part of in high school? Did you ever fall in love with a tentative brother…by accident? If so, than this is the podcast for you! Sometimes technology turns against you. You spend hours recording, and then it decides that your files just don’t exist and delete them from existence. That’s what happened in this case anyway. So sadly we don’t have a normal episode for you, but thankfully we had a plan B up our sleeves. This is our first “Special” episode. We recently counted down our best of the decade (so far), and the usual hosts Taylor Devorsky and Jonathan Romo asked fellow writers Jenny Nulf and Ryan Oliver to join them for a discussion regarding those picks (and non-picks). They discussed animated features, foreign films, and movies that just may have been underappreciated or misunderstood. Hopefully you enjoy this compensation and be on the look-out for future ones like it. [Note: Spoilers and Explicit Language Within] Also, the discussion of In Bruges was thankfully saved, so you have an extra few days to watch it in preparation for the next non-special episode. Movies discussed and time-markers: Force Majeure (2:45), Ida (10:00), Two Days One Night (15:35), The Hunt (18:25), I Saw the Devil (27:20), Toy Story 3 (38:00), From Up on Poppy Hill (44:25), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (45:30), The Lego Movie (50:45), Wreck-It Ralph (53:25), Rango (55:19), Boyhood (57:30), Her (1:03:50), Spring Breakers (1:13:00), Inherent Vice (1:29:05), Inside Llewyn Davis (1:33:35), Under the Skin (1:44:10), Killer Joe (1:44:10), Moneyball (1:50:40), Killing Them Softly (1:53:15), The Social Network (1:55:30)
