Welcome back to Beyond Miyazaki's World! In this episode, Avery and Betty will dive deeper into another film directed by Goro Miyazaki. The duo discussed the themes of grief, a sense of community, appreciation of history, passion, and young love. Check it out now! Beyond Miyazaki's World is the sequel to the previous podcast known as Into Miyazaki's World hosted by Betty and Avery. In this season 2 production, the pair will move beyond Hayao Miyazaki's movies to explore more Studio Ghibli films produced by different directors, such as Isao Takahata, Goro Miyazaki, and more. This premiere episode tackles the debut film of the studio co-founder's son, Goro Miyazaki, called Tales from Earthsea. The film was based on the book of the same name written by Ursula K. Le Guine. The duo discuss the major themes of the movie, including identity, the metaphor of the shadow, and life and death. They also share their opinions regarding the plot and Goro's style of storytelling. Tales from Earthsea is known as one of the worst Studio Ghibli movies, but is it really that bad? Listen to this episode to find out!
God lytting!
[School of Movies 2023] A strange period for Ghibli brings us to the end of our current run, still with the closing triumph of Spirited Away (2000) to cap this body of work off, as well as this year's The Boy and the Heron paving the way for a future tenth instalment. What we are looking at is the last film from Isao Takahata (who died only five years later) the visually resplendent as well as distinctive Princess Kaguya, which is my favourite of his works, but still has one glaring bad decision inherent to the edit. Then there's the most astonishing surprise from this entire project, which is quite how I unexpectedly adored When Marnie was There (from Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the director of Arrietty). The most delicate, Gothic tale in their back catalogue. After that, yet another film that deliberately defies the established Ghibli aesthetic, the first collaboration with a non-Japanese director Michael Dudok de Wit and the wordless caveman-accessible tale of a red turtle (who is secretly a woman, or vice versa). And then for maximum shame, the definite WORST Ghibli film ever made, or that ever will be made; Earwig and the Witch, directed by Goro Miyazaki. A film so awful it dragged his father out of retirement yet again. But to end on a pleasant note, we talk about both the RPG video game Ni no Kuni and the freshly established "Studio Ponoc" and their debut "Mary and the Witch's Flower". Truly the child of Ghibli, and a team we hope will continue making beautiful films far beyond our lifespans. 2013: The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (0m 35s) 2014: When Marnie Was There (16m 50s) 2016: The Red Turtle (29m 30s) 2020: Earwig and the Witch (45m 35s) 2017: Mary and the Witch's Flower (1h 4m 20s)
[School of Movies 2023] Having now won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Ghibli was facing the retirement of one of their absolute linchpins. Hayao Miyazaki wanted to go out with a bang, so adapted another favourite book of his. Howl was popular, but readers had things to say about changes that were made. After that, his son Goro Miyazaki tried his hand at being a director in the elder's absence. adapting another treasured childhood fantasy, which was declared the worst Ghibli ever upon launch (we don't think that's fair in hindsight; Goro has done way worse since). So, the grumpy Dad returned with a sweet little mermaid story about why his grandchild is just as cute as a button. He would later attempt and fail at retirement several more times! 2004: Howl's Moving Castle (1m 35s) 2006: Tales from Earthsea (44m 21s) 2008: Ponyo (1h 3m 35s) In the middle of our show there is an essay piece from our friend Alejandra Vargas. (NOTE: Part 6, which will be Spirited Away has not yet been recorded, but we will be releasing that as our finale, because it is our favourite.)
"The Truman Show" was a feature that some would say has aged like a fine wine, but there seems to be many who still have a bitter taste in their mouth. What would Hollywood be like if this feature received its roses back in 1998 instead of 2022 at Cannes? Would Jim Carrey have become the post-modern Tom Hanks? Is he American enough to usurp the two-time Oscar winner's greatest title of "America's Dad"? Before this podcast recording, CatBusRuss had only seen the third act of this Peter Weir classic. He was thoroughly impressed by the direction and could tell that Carrey was providing the performance of his lifetime. The first chance he found a discount on the digital release, our host knew it was a must buy. Finding the time, and perhaps the motivation, to watch it was the challenge. His living situation the past seven years could be to blame. Perhaps he did not want to break the initial rules of the "NinetyForChill: The #Podcast". This feature is officially three minutes too long. More than likely though, it may have been the thought of further enduring ThePoeticCritic's obsession with everything that was late nineties Jim Carrey. This week, CatBus faces all of those challenges with a 130 minute conversation with his big sister about what may be one of her favorite features of all time. As for Ani-May, CatBus watched the return of Studio Ghibli with Goro Miyazaki's "Earwig and the Witch", another tale of strange adoption.

As the Olympics start in Tokyo, we're focusing on Japanese artists who are examining history, re-inventing tradition and telling new stories. Visual artist Meiro Koizumi tells presenter Mariko Oi about the importance of capturing lost war stories and his artistic take on the Olympic torch relay. Koizumi's prize-winning video installation The Angels of Testimony brings to life the darker side of Japanese history. Centred around a 99-year-old veteran's experiences of perpetrating violence in China during WWII, young people are filmed performing his shocking words on the streets of Tokyo. Studio Ghibli is one of the biggest names in animation, famous for films such as My Neighbour Totoro and the Oscar-winning Spirited Away. Since the company's founder Hayao Miyazaki retired in 2014, his son, Goro Miyazaki has emerged as a new leading creative force at the iconic Japanese anime house. Our reporter Anna Bailey speaks to Goro ahead of the release of his third film, Earwig and the Witch. Japanese singer Hatis Noit creates atmospheric, multi-layered music using her soulful voice. One of her most haunting tracks is the piece she created in response to the Fukushima disaster. She performed the piece, Inori, at a ceremony when many of the evacuated residents were allowed to return home. Hatis talks to Mariko about her belief in the power of the human voice and her musical tribute to Fukushima. As international teams gather in Tokyo to compete, one artistic project is representing more than 200 countries in the form of Kimono. Every traditional Japanese robe has been beautifully crafted to reflect the climate, culture and countryside of each place. Designer Maki Yamamoto speaks about the details and purpose of the Imagine One World Kimono Project.
This week in our Chat Returns miniseries, we are thrilled to speak with one of the leading characters of the Ghibliotheque story so far... Studio Ghibli's long-serving producer, enabler, genius-herder and former President, Toshio Suzuki. Suzuki has played a key role in every Studio Ghibli film to date, and has had significant influence on the careers of all Ghibli's filmmakers, not least Goro Miyazaki, who was tapped to direct Tales From Earthsea by Suzuki. As discussed on our previous episode, Goro Miyazaki describes Suzuki as the 'dark wizard' behind Ghibli, and his mark is still seen even today, on the new release Earwig and the Witch - which is screening in UK cinemas now.Keep an eye out for weekly episodes in our Chat Returns miniseries - featuring conversations with filmmakers, writers, and animators who have either worked directly with Ghibli, or have been heavily inspired by them - over the next couple of months. Our book, Ghibliotheque - The Unofficial Guide to Studio Ghibli, will be on sale from all good bookshops in the UK from 2nd September, and is available for preorder now.Get in touch with Ghibliotheque at ghibli@littledotstudios.com or follow us on Twitter:@ghibliotheque@MichaelJLeader - Michael@jakehcunningham - Jake@_stephwatts - StephProduced by Michael Leader, Jake Cunningham, Harold McShiel and Steph Watts. This week, The Cultural Frontline explores family, legacy and creativity. Studio Ghibli is one of the biggest names in animation, famous for films such as The Wind Rises, My Neighbour Totoro and the Oscar winning Spirited Away. For years, Studio Ghibli was led by its co-founder, the visionary director, Hayao Miyazaki. Since Hayao‘s retirement in 2014 there have been changes at the iconic animation house, with the emergence of Hayao's son, Goro Miyazaki as a new leading force. Our reporter Anna Bailey speaks to Goro about the challenges of continuing his father's legacy and his new film Earwig and the Witch, a story about magic and family. Is there a work of art - a song, a poem or a film that makes you think of your family? The music producer Fatima al-Qadiri shares the story of how the soundtrack to her favourite game evokes the memories of her childhood in Kuwait during the First Gulf War. Two mothers determined to do what's right for their children. That simple premise is the starting point for the new novel What's Mine and Yours, a multigenerational story of race, family and identity in America by the acclaimed writer Naima Coster. Chi Chi Izundu speaks to Naima about how her novel was shaped by her experiences of childhood and motherhood. Family history, identity and voicing the challenges faced by young working class women, that's the focus of the poetry collection, Where the Memory Was, by British-Somali poet Hibaq Osman. For The Cultural Frontline, Hibaq shares the influences that shaped her writing and reads one of her poems. Presented by Chi Chi Izundu (Photo: Earwig and The Witch. Credit: Studio Ghibli)

The Ehlke siblings Philip, Dawson, and Samara talk Studio Ghibli and their latest release 'Earwig and the Witch' (2020) from director Goro Miyazaki, son of acclaimed animator Hayao Miyazaki. This is the first CGI animated film from Studio Ghibli, and it features the young Erica Wigg, a.k.a "Earwig," who becomes the foster child of a witch and her demonic companion. The enterprising Earwig is challenged to adapt to her difficult new surroundings, as it is genuinely uncertain whether her foster parents pose a threat to her or are simply old and disgruntled. This surprisingly apt metaphor for uncomfortable family circumstances also holds the key to Earwig's past: A key with the potential to heal her new home. Welcome to 15 minutes of two nerds bullying Goro Miyazaki. Truly this is a podcast filled with class and dignity. Seriously though, Caleb and Joe sit down to discuss the latest Studio Ghibli flick Earwig and the Witch and its bizarre lack of cohesion. Argomenti: 00:00 "Earwig and the Witch" (Goro Miyazaki, 2020) 31:16 "News of the world" (Paul Greengrass, 2020) 54:57 "Lei mi parla ancora" (Pupi Avati, 2021) Partecipanti Marco Grifò Dario Denta Gianmaria Atzei Alessandro Corti (Ospite) Alessandro Valenti Logo creato da: Massimo Valenti Sigla e post-produzione a cura di: Alessandro Valenti Per il jingle della sigla si ringraziano: Alessandro Corti e Gianluca Nardo

This week, Michael and Jake are thrilled to tackle something new for the Ghibliotheque podcast... a brand-new Studio Ghibli film! The latest from Goro Miyazaki, Earwig and the Witch may come from a familiar source, as it's adapted from a novel by Howl's Moving Castle author Diana Wynne Jones, but it showcases a radical new direction for Ghibli as the Studio's first 3D, CG-animated feature. But how has the experiment turned out?Follow Ghibliotheque on Twitter:@ghibliotheque@MichaelJLeader – Michael@jakehcunningham – Jake@_stephwatts - StephProduced by Michael Leader, Jake Cunningham, Harold McShiel and Steph Watts. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

A follow-up to one of Ghibli's most controversial releases, From Up On Poppy Hill was director Goro Miyazaki's second crack at the whip after his debut, Tales From Earthsea. Find out what we had to say about the directorial debut of Goro Miyazaki.
This week, Michael & Jake tackle the controversial Ursula K. Le Guin adaptation Tales From Earthsea, the directorial debut from Goro Miyazaki, son of Studio Ghibli legend Hayao Miyazaki. Le Guin once said that only Miyazaki could do her epic fantasy series justice on the big screen - but little did she know that the task would fall to Goro, who had no prior animation, filmmaking or directing experience. He also had no support from his ever-aloof dad, and, on release, received little encouragement from critics and fans alike. How does this inauspicious debut play today?Show notes:Read Goro Miyazaki’s blog, ‘Zero Marks as a Father, Full Marks as a Director’ -http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/earthsea/blog/blog39.htmlRead Ursula K Le Guin’s blog, ‘Gedo Senki, a first response’ -http://www.ursulakleguin.com/GedoSenkiResponse.htmlFollow Michael and Jake on Twitter:@MichaelJLeader – Michael@jakehcunningham – JakeProduced by Michael Leader, Jake Cunningham, Harold McShiel and Steph WattsEditing by Lister Rossell See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Are you ready to take a journey into a world where magic is real? A world where dragons soar through the air? A world where a new adventure is waiting around every bend? Well, you’re not going to be getting any of that here, because this is Anime Was (Not) a Mistake's episode about Goro Miyazaki’s Tales From Earthsea. In our biggest, dragon-sized, episode to date, Dan and Jonathan discuss what might be the only anime movie so far in the Ghibli canon that might be a ...mistake? Ursula K. Le Guin's novel is adapted by the son of THE Anime Maestro and the stakes have never been higher! If you like undeveloped characters, a lack of cohesion, and a magnificent anime movie that could have been then stay tuned. Gather your courage and hold tight to your true name....you may need to believe in magic to make it through this one. #WhatDidGoroDo? Welcome back for another episode of the ongoing celebration of being a Nerd, the weather in Queensland is starting to cool off a little. It takes an extra couple of minutes to cook your feet on the concrete now. We have another wonderful episode full of fantastic material for everyone, and believe me when I say everyone. Before we go further, we wish to have a moment to farewell the Mars Opportunity Rover, the gutsy little robot that could, and did for 15 years, so long and see you soon. First up Buck is excited to tell us about the World Science Festival happening this year in Queensland. There are events all around the place ranging from Chinchilla (the dinosaur capital of Australia) to the northern coast in Townsville and Gladstone not just in Brisbane. Buck is like a kid in a candy shop trying to work out which events he wants to attend. Check it out there are so many things to do and see it is totally amazing. There are even films being shown at GOMA (The Gallery of Modern Art) that you can look forward to. The Professor has news about the jobs cut at Activision and the ramifications of it. Also a rumour about job offers circulating for the recently unemployed. This is another major studio/publisher that is facing trouble with declines in sales, share price and general profitability. Wonder when they will start to listen to the customers and make games fun again. Also just bring back games with great storylines, not everyone wants to play a battle royale. DJ has found an amazing movie for us to all go and watch, titled Wandering Earth. It is a Sci-Fi from China on a big budget and is looking well worth watching. We will let you know what we think, but remember we encourage you to make your own decisions not just be sheeple and follow mindlessly what some cretin says. We also have the games being played and the lists of shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, events and general banter. Also we are sad to announce that no one was interested in the date with the DJ.EPISODE NOTES:World Science Festival Brisbane 2019 - http://www.worldsciencefestival.com.au/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA14TjBRD_ARIsAOCmO9b4a4oCKRet7RwIKcYPNs3VXlKlj2QXL7RbnpOZNd7SY9MhDCuDrD4aAmynEALw_wcBActivision Job Cuts - https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-08/activision-is-said-to-plan-job-cuts-as-sales-of-key-games-stallWandering Earth the movie - https://www.flicks.com.au/reviews/chinese-blockbuster-the-wandering-earth-might-be-the-best-sci-fi-movie-of-2019/?fbclid=IwAR23djvIMpwbHdA_moWg7qnkyrVqkLERcukORh978SxohkKI-QdOefsIRZIGames currently playingProfessor– Wargroove - https://wargroove.com/DJ– Apex Legends - https://www.ea.com/games/apex-legendsBuck– The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim - https://store.steampowered.com/app/72850/The_Elder_Scrolls_V_Skyrim/Other topics discussedTotal Recall (1990 movie)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Recall_(1990_film)Solaris (2002 US movie)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solaris_(2002_film)List of Activision games- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Activision_video_gamesActivision Blizzard shuts down King’s Seattle studio- https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2019-02-13-activision-blizzard-reportedly-shutters-kings-seattle-studioFurther info about The Wandering Earth- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wandering_EarthShadow Raiders (TV Series)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_RaidersWar Planets (Toy Series)- http://www.virtualtoychest.com/warplanets/warplanets.htmlWorld Engine (Shadow Raiders reference)- https://shadowraiders.fandom.com/wiki/World_EngineWargroove now on Steam- https://store.steampowered.com/app/607050/Wargroove/Apex Legends will have Solo and Duo modes- https://www.pcgamer.com/au/apex-legends-could-soon-get-solo-and-duos-modes/Achievement hunter playing Apex Legends- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfm5TYQdMC0Gary Larson Art- Thagomizer - https://i.imgur.com/Fv9wXyX.jpg- Dinosaur Cranial Capacity - https://i3.wp.com/i.racjonalista.pl/img/strony/larson1.jpgShoutouts16 Apr 2018 - Gary Larson – The man behind the name the “Thagomizer” a feature of stegosaurus anatomy, was coined in a Far Side cartoon - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Larson24 Jan 2019 - Hayao & his son Goro Miyazaki are making 2 new Studio Ghibli movies - https://screenrant.com/hayao-miyazaki-studio-ghibli-new-movies/11 Feb 1999 – Final Fantasy VIII turns 20 - https://thespinoff.co.nz/games/12-02-2019/final-fantasy-8-is-the-best-and-weirdest-final-fantasy/Remembrances7 Feb 2019 – Albert Finney, English actor who worked in film (Annie (1982), Erin Brockovich, Big Fish, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Bourne Legacy and Skyfall) television and theatre. This month we couldn't resist taking a bite out of the recent Netflix phenomenon, DEVILMAN Crybaby. We talk about our personal reactions, the show's surprisingly optimistic thesis, horniness, queer elements, and why we're glad we followed the hype down this incredible rabbit hole of apocalypse and love. On the literary side, we also dive into the show’s relation to Satyr Plays in Greek Tragedy and its use of Greek Chorus through Wamu’s hip-hop crew. SPOILER WARNINGS for all of Devilman Crybaby. Content Warning for discussions of the show's treatment of violence and sexual assault. Intro: Devilman no Uta / AVU-chan by アヴちゃん Outtro: Konyadake by Takkyu and Tavito Link to the interview we referenced: https://blog.sakugabooru.com/2018/01/08/devilman-crybaby-interview-with-director-masaaki-yuasa/ Next month we will be back on schedule releasing our episode on Goro Miyazaki’s Tales From Earthsea.
**Gundam’s Glorious Jazz Hole** The 26 animated feature films that have been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination have been announced so naturally, we're going to see what all the fuss is about … Before all of that though, our first order of business is visiting Mark who is currently wallowing in mech-hell after his addiction flared up again due to the extreme musical stylings of Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt. After that we're off to explore the forest in Goro Miyazaki's adaptation of Astrid Lindgren's children's novel Ronja: The Robber's Daughter (Sanzoku no Musume Ronja or Ronja Rövardotter) - which is also the first ever anime TV series produced by Studio Ghibli.
