This week we bounce from toy-filled offices and pirate obsessions into brain-powered computers and philosophical robot chaos—before wrapping things up with a very French film discussion and next week's Book Club pick. Real Life Devon kicks things off by giving some Texans a tour of his office—which, unsurprisingly, is packed with what can only be described as adult toys. Naturally, this spirals into a broader conversation about how we're all just kids with slightly more expensive hobbies. No shame there. Ben brings us into the world of VR with Walkabout Mini Golf's Hollywood course (check it out here: https://www.mightycoconut.com/hollywood). But it's not all smooth putting—there's some concern about rising course prices, less frequent releases, layoffs, and reduced iOS support. The vibe is shifting a bit, and not necessarily in a good way. Devon also caught Project Hail Mary in IMAX and came away seriously impressed—calling it one of the best book adaptations he's seen. High praise. That leads into some appreciation for Andy Weir's writing style and a detour into the Cheshire Crossing webcomic, because apparently we're doing high-concept sci-fi and surreal fairy tale mashups in the same breath now. Meanwhile, Steven has fully committed to pirates. A Pirates of the Caribbean rewatch has set the tone, but instead of just watching, he's gearing up to run a full-on Pirate Borg game (https://www.limithron.com/pirateborg). There's also a shoutout to Land of Eem, a muppet-inspired TTRPG being run by Christina's husband—which sounds delightfully weird—but yeah… pirates won this week.   Future or Now Devon brings in something that sounds like it's straight out of a dystopian sci-fi script: data centers powered by human brain cells. ATTENTION ADVENTURERS! Presenting almost seven hours of music and amusing announcements from Madame Phoole's Panharmonium live at the 2026 Gardens and Gears Steampunk Faire in Milwaukee's beautiful Mitchell Park Domes Horticultural Conservatory! Recorded live on Saturday, 7 March 2026. The 2026 theme was "Modern Wonders of the World," so sounds evoke the Pyramids at Giza, Chichen Itza in Peru, the Great Wall of China, the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, and travel to exotic locales in general, with dashes of bal-musette, vals criollo, tango, and Jazz Manouche, along with plenty of crowd-pleasing Dixieland jazz and Tin-Pan-Alley ragtime piano. The event took place in a giant glass dome, which was connected to two other giant glass domes, each of which contained immersive botanical gardens. The Show Dome, in which Mme. Phoole performed, also housed an exhibit of model trains, the tracks for which wended their way in and out amongst the foliage, so tunes about trains are sprinkled throughout. The cavernous, echoing venue suggests to Madame Phoole a multi-modal station for every kind of steam travel, so the goofy, pseudo-British-dialect announcements interspersed amongst the tunes are themed to H.G. Wells-esque kinds of travel and adventure. Phoole and Tiffany play a lot of Walkabout Mini Golf in virtual reality, so a few of our favorite compositions by Chris Reyman from that game's soundtrack make cameo appearances. Because the States are still steeping in a very 1933-in-Germany zeitgeist, many 1930s tunes performed by Max Raabe & Palast Orchester are played, along with a too-brief dip into Chap-Hop.

Edward Saatchi has been building at the frontier of AI storytelling for a decade—from Oculus Story Studios to Fable (where his AI character Lucy made her own films at Sundance) to his current venture, Amazon-backed Showrunner. His thesis is provocative: AI-generated content is stuck in a four-year rut of short-form experiments with no commercial marketplace, no monetization path, and no artistic value. Creators are working solo, making 10-second clips that can't compete with Rick and Morty or Netflix originals. The solution? Band together, make features and TV shows, and build platforms where creators get paid every time someone remixes their work.Edward's most audacious project proves the point: reconstructing Orson Welles' lost masterpiece, The Magnificent Ambersons (44 minutes destroyed by studio cuts in 1942), using motion-capture actors and AI to seamlessly restore what was erased. The irony is intentional—it's a film about technology destroying beauty, restored by technology. Edward's approach isn't text-to-video slop. It's human performance driving AI synthesis: hire stage actors, capture their performances, use the original cutting continuity as a blueprint, and let AI fill the gaps. Real Life Ben took a family trip down to San Diego just in time for the other fireworks night—turns out, there are often more fireworks on the 3rd of July than the 4th. Devon also caught a local 3rd-of-July fireworks show, which has started to feel like the real deal instead of just a warm-up. Ben: “More fireworks on the 3rd than the 4th, easily.” The trend continues. While Ben and Devon were oohing and aahing at sky explosions, Steven stayed home and got some solid mini painting in while the family was off in LA. No notes, just vibes. He and Ben also snuck in a round of Walkabout Minigolf on the Raptor Cliffs course—it's like someone built a coastal campground-theme park hybrid, then casually added actual dinosaurs. Possibly the greatest putt-putt theme of all time. Meanwhile, Ben's been hooked on Watch Duty, an incredibly useful app that tracks wildfires and public safety alerts—especially important during peak summer heat. And no, Devon is nowhere near the Texas flooding that made national headlines on the 4th. Tragic and preventable, if we hadn't gutted infrastructure funding and climate prep years ago. Steven got a chance to run Daggerheart, the new RPG system by Critical Role (yes, spelled right this time). The system leans into storytelling with hope and fear dice—2d12 that keep every roll interesting. He nearly lost a copy to a chaotic-good Barnes & Noble employee, but ultimately triumphed. Future or Now Devon's existential pick this week? A study suggesting that the universe might start collapsing... in only 7 billion years. Here's the article. The researchers—drawing on data from the Dark Energy Survey and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument—predict we could be headed for a Big Crunch by year 33.3 billion. Honestly, we barely understand time and space now. Let's not even get into how to measure it. Steven brought the yeast: scientists have bioengineered yeast to glow and produce billions of peptide-based drugs. It's green tech, it's fast, it's like if a lava lamp could cure cancer. Glowing drug factories made of yeast. We love science when it gets weird and useful. Ben's deep in the sleep zone again—this time biohacking naps. Apple Watches, dream journals, and the fact that napping might make you literally see the world differently. Ben's fully ready to enter his lucid dream coding era. Not exactly, and I haven't seen it in a long time, but enough that I was like hmm... this kind of reminds me of something. Also, in the beginning, Elio stumbles into a museum place and there's a speaker talking about Voyager and whatnot. I turned to my husband and was like, wait—is that Kate Mulgrew? And he said, 'I have no idea who that is.' Sigh, being married to a non-nerd. But yea, they had Capt. Janeway voice a section about the NASA Voyager program." Chef's kiss. Quick movie reviews: Elio (Steven): ★★★¾ — good sci-fi intro for younger audiences. Flight of the Navigator (Devon): Still fun, though we forgot it has a 12-year time jump. How to Train Your Dragon (Ben & Devon): Ben called it a “competently done action movie,” Devon praised the depth and pacing—especially that final battle. Independence Day (Ben): It's still a banger. Devon's stunned Steven hasn't watched it more. Jurassic World: Rebirth (Steven): Don't. Just... don't. Not even for hate-watching. And lastly: an original Technicolor print of Star Wars—yes, pre-Lucas tinkering—was recently screened in the UK. It's official: Han shot first. If you're curious, the best fan restorations are the Despecialized Edition and 4K77, sourced from original 35mm prints. The Force is real, and so is the grainy, unedited magic. Walkabout Mini Golf is really an incredible accomplishment of VR design with its fusion of worldbuilding, compelling physics-based gameplay, the unique social dynamics and community it's able to cultivate, and over 4 1/2 years of consistent DLC courses every 8 weeks or so. They have launched 33 total courses, and just recently announced that they're bumping the price by $10 and adding 6 DLC courses into the base game so that is now 14 courses for $24.99. It's still an incredible deal, especially considering that there are still 19 DLC courses available, which has helped earn the #20 spot on Meta's best-selling Quest apps of all time. During my trip to SXSW, I had a chance to speak with the original solo developer of Walkabout Mini Golf, Lucas Martell, who has since grown the Mighty Coconut Studio team to 35 people. We talk about how their design process for courses starts with worldbuilding, but also how his script-writing background has helped to inform how they tell the story of each of these worlds through the evolution of game mechanics and shape language that each course is exploring. After I had a chance to interview Martell, I was given access to all 33 of the courses, which I have played through over the past week in order to provide a bit more context on what they've been able to accomplish with Walkabout Mini Golf. It's certainly an achievement within VR design that combines the best part of immersive worldbuilding, convincing gameplay, and compelling social dynamics that keeps players coming back again and again.Be sure to check out the table below which lists the timeline of the release of the 33 different courses that are now available.
