We speak with regenerative farmer, Val Steinmann who owns and operates Heartwood Farm and Cidery with her husband Brent and her three adult children. This is a conversation about Val's journey to developing a deep and reverential co-creative relationship with a small piece of land. Words cannot really describe this place. Its more than a farm and a cider house. It's a feeling. It's a deep connection to something more than ourselves, it's the animals the land and the mutual integral relationship that exists among all of it.   If you ever have the gift of visiting, You'll often be greeted by baby Kuni-Kuni piglets, large and friendly Clydesdale horses, a herd of cows, and a flock of free-roaming chickens. And at some point, you may find yourself with a glass of their apple cider in your hand.  You've arrived.  Our conversation explores so many things.  How Val's desire for a more beautiful world our hearts know is possible is a driving force for her to imagine a different way of being in a relationship with herself and her land.   We explore risk-taking, looking fear in the eye and using it to bring our best selves into the world so the thriving can begin.  It's a conversation about reciprocity, distributed wisdom, and the value of community in supporting us as we take bold actions. We talk about the importance of trusting our own inner voice and not waiting for permission to bring the things that give us joy and energy to the world. And bravely asking ourselves, what is our inner song to sing?  We explore the beautiful intricacies of natural cycles and looking deep both into nature and into ourselves to find them. In the end, it's a conversation about recognizing that what gives us joy, what lights us up, actually might be the very thing that is the most trusted guidance. If this episode inspired you in some way, take a screenshot of you listening on your device and post it to your Instagram Stories, and tag me @amidehne.I want to invite you to help contribute to this podcast by submitting a question for the Disruptions With Purpose podcast.  All you have to do is go here and submit a question or episode suggestion that could be featured on an upcoming episode.LINKS:Heartwood Farm and Cidery is a regenerative farm with fresh air, good soil, healthy plants and animals, and a lively kitchen table. “Anytime we connect with others, if we're open to the possibility, we can find ways to benefit each other” - Valerie Poon Welcome to the Mindful FIRE Podcast, where we explore living mindfully on the path to financial independence and beyond. I'm your host Adam Coelho and I'm glad you're here.  On this episode I'm joined by my friend Valerie Poon, who I met through a Grow with Google coaching session a few months back. Val and I connected about our shared interest in mindfulness and financial independence.  After our conversation, I knew I had to bring her on the podcast to share her perspective on FIRE and mindful living as a young person. The concepts and practices surrounding mindfulness and financial independence are powerful at any age but starting early makes an incredible difference. I often think how powerful it would have been for me to have the knowledge and practices of FIRE and mindfulness early in my twenties.  Val is currently a student in her last year at OCAD University where she studies design. On top of her studies she's keeping herself busy with exploring social innovation, emotional intelligence, community building, sustainability and youth empowerment.  In this episode Val and I dive deep into living intentionally amidst a world full of uncertainty.  In this episode we explore:  The concept of uncertainty, including what the ocean has to teach us about it as a part of life.   That there is power in trusting in the uncertain nature of the world. What a 10 day silent meditation retreat taught me (Adam) about uncertainty and the constantly changing nature of experience How Val attempts to infuse her life with intentionality, from how she starts her day to how she approaches her time at university and with each person she interacts with My thoughts on living intentionally as a practice of making the most of each moment and this one life I have to live. How Val sees being a student as a tremendous amount of opportunity to experiment, learn and grow and fail with a supportive safety net while being surrounded by other people who are there to learn as well. How Val is working on a design project to explore how we can make our relationship with technology more mindful. How Val approaches networking or rather “connecting with curiosity” and how she aims to add value to everyone she interacts with, especially mentors.  How Val thinks about pursuing financial independence as a 23 year old student My (Adam) thoughts on pursuing financial independence mindfully This episode was a great reminder to me of the simple ways we can all choose to be a bit more intentional to make the most of each moment and this one life we have to live. I learned so much from this conversation and I hope you do as well.  Full show notes at

This week on the podcast, I'm so excited to share with you this interview with Michelle Valerio, who goes by VAL. VAL is a product of a single mother home, living in Paterson New Jersey. Shen was raised in a farm in Puerto Rico until she was 6 years old and then came to the United States.   In the 7th grade, a teacher heard her voice and told her she needed to join the Spanish club in the school. The Spanish club was a glee club in the school but just Spanish songs. This was when VAL broke out of her stage fright.   Years later, she learned how to properly sing and gained the knowledge she needed to go to college where she pursued studies in music therapy. In college, Val was apart of a couple bands, pop and jazz ensembles. She loves to talk, sing and to heal, so she created her podcast called Reflections with Val where she brings life, music and therapy together.   In this episode: How VAL's upbringing brought her to where she is now Her journey towards self-love Her role as a leader and a healer in the world The process of writing lyrics and songs What music therapy is and how it helps Her tips for staying in a strong, growth mindset, even through challenging times.   CONNECT WITH VAL https://www.instagram.com/soulfully_val/ https://www.instagram.com/reflectionswithval/ https://soundcloud.com/reflectionswithval   CONNECT WITH ME https://www.instagram.com/simona.nicole/ https://www.instagram.com/happinesshappenspodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/simona.nicolee/ https://twitter.com/simona_cos www.simonanicole.com

Shownotes and links for this episode can be found at http://sarahsantacroce.com/episode56 Is there a place for intuition when it comes to decision-making for business? Or should we rely solely on the spreadsheets? Val Nelson contends that the best way forward is to merge the two, tapping into our hearts for guidance, then confirming our instincts with focus groups and cold, hard data. This balance creates a sense of flow and an ease in determining next steps that can be of great benefit to us as introverted entrepreneurs. In fact, it’s how Val came to create her business. Val is known as The Black Swan Coach, a mentor for fellow introverted solopreneurs. She specializes in helping heart-centered women create the sustainable, fulfilling and relaxing lives they really want through business and life coaching and courses that teach her clients to bring their unique gifts to the world. Val is also a sought-after speaker and facilitator, having presented at Harvard Business School, the Women’s Business Conference, and UMass School of Business, among many others. Today, Val explains why we make the biggest impact when we show up as our unique selves. She shares Black Swan’s three main revenue streams, including her newly minted course around using intuition in business decision-making. Val offers insight around her ability to see the genius in others as well as the challenges she faces by getting tangled in overthinking. She also speaks to the turning point when she identified her niche as a business and life coach for introverts, despite skepticism from friends and colleagues. Listen in for Val’s advice on leveraging co-writing groups for motivation, taking care of our energy with guided meditation, and engaging logic AND intuition to uncover our true purpose. *** Become a VIP of my community Be the first to know whenever I release a new podcast or host a special webinar for introverts. As some of you know, my husband and I are huge fans of ballroom dancing, so it’s only natural that we’re huge fans of Dancing with the Stars’ Val Chmerkovskiy. After spending time with him earlier this year in Guatemala with Pencils of Promise, I just knew I needed to have him on the show to share more about his story and why making an impact is so important.   Born in Ukraine, at age 8, he and his family immigrated to Brooklyn, NY. As you can imagine it was a challenging transition but his parents inspired him to meet challenges by never backing away from theirs. To help occupy him and his brother’s time, they were enrolled in both violin and later on ballroom dancing. This soon became a passion for the whole family. In addition to Val and his brother Maks’ successful dance careers, they have since opened 14 other dance studios.   I cannot wait for you to hear Val’s inspiring story. Not only is he so passionate about his own life and what he does, he also hopes to inspire others to do the same. Tune in to hear how’s he connecting with others to do just that and how he’s making an impact in the world today.    --      Question Highlights: What did your life look like growing up and where did your passion for what you do now come from? What is most exciting in your life right now? Was not giving up or quitting a mindset that you were taught growing up? What do you think it takes to be a good leader/mentor? What have you learned from being on your 50-city tour? Do you still get nervous before you perform?   In This Episode We Talk about: Why Val is so inspired by his parents How Val and his brother got into dance (and violin) Val’s (and his parents’) entrepreneurial spirit Why it’s essential to have pride without the ego Why mentorship is important to Val Forming connections and making an impact with others Val’s 50-city tour Why Val loves seeing others who are passionate about what they do And much more…   Quotes How can I possibly dwell in my own success without having the energy of wanting to pass it forward and reciprocate?”   “A blessing isn’t realized until it’s passed forward.”   “I feel most fulfilled when I have a purpose.”   “Trust your track record.”   “Be nervous because you care, but don’t sell yourself short.” --   Valentin “Val” Chmerkovskiy was born in Odessa, Ukraine to an engineer mother and marine merchant father. At 8 years old, Val’s family immigrated to Brooklyn, NY as refugees seeking asylum from the corrupt ex-communist nation. It was in a small Eastern European community in South Brooklyn where Val first picked up ballroom dancing as an after school activity that his parents hoped would keep him out of trouble. Soon after, Val found another passion in playing the violin, further easing the nerves of his parents as the arts kept their curious son off the South Brooklyn streets. Although he resisted the temptation of Hollywood for a few years, in 2011 Val eventually joined his brother Maks as a member of the cast of professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars for its 13th installment. The 14-time US National Champion and two-time World Dance Champion quickly rose to stardom, becoming a fan-favorite for his impeccable performances and unique demeanor. Val won his first Dancing with the Stars Mirrorball Trophy with partner Rumer Willis during the ten-year anniversary season of the show. He later took home his second title in 2016 while partnered with Olympic Gold Medalist Laurie Hernandez. Most recently, Val was partnered with Paralympic swimmer Victoria Arlen, making it all the way to the semi-finals for which he choreographed a dance that brought a wheelchair into the world famous DWTS Ballroom for the first time. Val is the first and only American to ever win the IDSF Junior and Youth World Championship, along with the prestigious British “Blackpool” Open, the German Open and the Asian Championships in Shenzhen, China. After overseeing the biggest youth ballroom dance program in the US, the Rising Stars Dance Academy, Val co-founded Dance With Me, one of the nation’s leading social dance studios, where he also lends his expertise as Art Director. Longing to continue his work with kids, Val implemented the Dance With Me Juniors program with the mission of keeping kids active, healthy, and creative. Val supports numerous educational organizations and children’s charities, including the Children’s Hospital of LA and Pencils of Promise, for which he helped build two schools in Ghana using the funds he raised for the organization. He also spent the last two years mentoring kids at the KIPP Scholar Academy in South Los Angeles and brought his most improved mentees along to live tapings of Dancing with the Stars to inspire them to continue working hard. As a classically trained violinist, Val has performed at Carnegie Hall and at Lincoln Center as a concertmaster for the ISO Youth Orchestra. He is fluent in English and Russian. Val recently finished writing his first memoir titled “I’ll Never Change my Name,” set to be released in March 2018.
