It's SHORT TIME SHOTS … a quick look at the day's top wrestling stories. Here's the good stuff for Tuesday, October 17.-Dylan Morrison of the MorWrestling podcast has a pair of guests on from Tarleton State to discuss what is currently happening with the future of Texas wrestling and what exactly is factual about the school's look to start a Division I wrestling program. New assistant coach Jimmy Overhiser also makes his first public appearance as part of the budding Tarleton State program. Check out that excellent interview wherever podcasts are found by searching out M O R Wrestling.-The University of Mount Union has announced the addition of a women's wrestling team to its athletic program, with competition set to begin in the fall of 2024. This move comes as women's wrestling experiences rapid growth at both the high school and collegiate levels, and it will make Mount Union the fourth Ohio Athletic Conference school to offer the sport.-Over on Rokfin, Willie Saylor of MatScouts has the first two previews out about the upcoming monstrosity of high school wrestling that is the Super 32 Challenge. Willie previews the weights through 144 pounds, with more coming on his channel. The girls pre-seeds for the event were also released, you can give those a look over at FloWrestling.-Also on Rokfin at the Missouri Wrestling channel, Cody Thorn breaks down the journey of Joshua Quiorz, the California native who is still searching for his next move after Division II William Jewell announced it was going to QUOTE “pause” the wrestling program after this year. School officials refused to answer our queries when the information came out last month, but still moved forward with shelving the program indefinitely, leaving the wrestlers who had already paid for their fall semester in a lurch. Missouri Wrestling has done a real good job covering this story. Give it a read. -Iowa's much-anticipated women's wrestling schedule was released on Monday, highlighted by two home events at Carver Hawkeye Arena and participation at the Soldier Salute just down the road at Xtream Arena. While Iowa women will celebrate its first year of wrestling, the University of Northern Iowa's men's program released its schedule for its 100th collegiate season. Campbell also announced its schedule, as did Division II Fairmont State. -On Wrestling Changed My Life, Ryan Warner talks with Jim Gibbons about his project, The Dual, which is being screened around the midwest. The Dual chronicles what Gibbons believes is the best college wrestling dual meet of all-time. A multi-part series, this is going to be something you want to check out.-United World Wrestling President Nenad Lalovic conveyed that the suspension imposed on the Wrestling Federation of India will be lifted as soon as the federation conducts free and fair elections. The global body has not set any deadline for this, but emphasized that the suspension will remain in place until such elections are held and a democratically elected managing committee is installed. Lalovic further noted that the lifting of the suspension is contingent on the elections being held democratically and without any complaints from stakeholders. The suspension came as a result of WFI's failure to conduct the necessary elections, a situation that has seen the federation embroiled in controversies, leading to significant postponements of the elections.-There is some positive news coming out of India though. Antim Panghal, the young wrestling sensation from India, has made waves in the wrestling community. With multiple accolades including two Junior World Wrestling championships, and a recent silver at the Asian Championships 2023, Panghal's rivalry with seasoned wrestler Vinesh Phogat and her journey to secure an Olympic quota for India in Paris 2024, exemplify her rising stature in the sport. The full profile is at Olympics.com. The full breakdown of the day's wrestling news can be delivered to your inbox daily, courtesy of Mat Talk Online's Daily Wrestling Newsletter, delivered by Rezahlite. In this episode with our guest Faranak Partoazar, a mountain biker from Iran with several accolades to her name, Dawn and I want to first acknowledge the challenges and obstacles women in Iran continue to face today, which makes Faranak's journey into mountain biking even more compelling. The safety of our guests, who come from across the region, is of utmost importance to us, and we have avoided sensitive topics in this discussion. At the age of nine, Faranak had to give up cycling because it was frowned upon for girls to be seen riding in Iran. But it was an obsession that never left her and at 21, she went looking for it again. The rest is history, literally!Faranak became one of the first professional mountain bikers in Iran, starting her career in 2014 and going on to win national titles and races at home, and also becoming the first woman in Iran to win medals in the Asian Championships. This, after the several hurdles of being harassed while riding, horrific accidents and difficulties in finding sponsors. She persevered to prove that women can be more successful than men in this sport in Iran. Our conversation with Faranak goes back to her childhood when she found cycling and then into finding her passion for mountain biking. We talk about the challenges she was met with, her competitions and how her purpose has grown to being the voice of encouragement for young women who want to pursue any sport anywhere in the world. Sports climber Elnaz Rekabi has become the latest symbol of the anti-government protests, begun and led by women in Iran. She competed in the Asian Championships in South Korea with her hair uncovered, breaking Iran's strict dress code requiring women to cover their hair with a hijab, or headscarf. Although Ms Rekabi later said her hijab had fallen off "inadvertently", the images had already gone viral. We hear from an Iranian female footballer who was in a similar position a few years ago and speak to a chess referee who took off her own headscarf during a tournament in 2020.

Samoa's national women's basketball coach still can't quite believe what her under 16s did in Jordan recently. The untried team made up of players from Australia, and one from New Zealand, and all recruited via social media, created a huge shock by winning promotion from Division B at the Asian Championship. The side included two 13-year-olds, one of whom scored two crucial free throws with just seconds to go.

Our Great Coach on this episode is Mark Lebedew. Mark is an Australian volleyball coach and former player. He started coaching in the early 90's eventually joining the Australian Institute of sport as a coach in 1997, where he also served as an assistant coach of the Australian men's team at the Sydney 2000 Olympics In 2010 he became a head coach of Berlin Recycling Volleys and in 2012, 2013 and 2014 he won the German Champion title. In 2015 the team also won the Bronze medal in the European Champions League. While In 2017 he led Jastrzebski Wegiel to the bronze medal in the Polish league, and From 2017 to 2019 he was also the coach of the Australian National Team and led them to a silver medal at the 2019 Asian Championships. He has also coached teams in Italy, Belgium and Poland and is currently the head coach of German club VfB Friedrichshafen. Mark is a coach with a truly global perspective, his teams are made up of many different nationalities, his present one has 8, and he has coached 5 different countries as well as in the Olympics, World Championships, World League, Volleyball Nations League, and this gives him a unique insight into the dynamic that shapes and propels high-performance. He is both a student and practioner of the craft of coaching, in fact he helped translate one of the greatest texts on volleyball coaching from Russian to English, and believes that the great coaches are playing a game inside their heads 24 hours a day. He believes that team work from the 6 players, all usually well over 6 feet tall on the 9*9 court, is more important than jumping 2 centimeters higher or hitting with 5kmh more of attack speed. And to achieve this, he is focused on helping players understand their role and execute it to best of their best of ability. Some of the other key highlights from this discussion were: His views on how human history has evolved through the act of getting better, and how he applied this to his own views on innovation and developing new techniques. The importance of controlling your emotions so the team members can have faith in you to lead them through any situation they may be facing. How he doesn't mind people having egos as it is an intrinsic motivator, as long as they don't lose the ability to work with others within the team. This was a wonderful conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as Jim and I did. If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at thegreatcoachespodcast@gmail.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com

Now a successful coach in the Philippines, Coach “Kitoy” talks about the stifling effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on his country and the local Taekwondo scene, and where things could (and controversially, should) be headed from here.
