It's disheartening to witness corruption and a lack of accountability in spaces meant to uphold trust and integrity. When leaders and organizations fail to live up to their values, it shakes the faith of those who rely on them. These sectors are supposed to serve people and bring positive change, but mismanagement or unethical behavior can leave communities feeling betrayed. It raises tough questions about oversight, responsibility, and how to rebuild credibility. Christopher Ayoub and Nathan Apffel explore the inner workings of the religious and nonprofit sectors. Nathan, a filmmaker, produced "The Religion Business," a series on financial practices and transparency issues. Chris, his business partner, brings expertise in team building and business. Today, they discuss systemic issues like donor fund misuse and propose empowering donors and exploring alternative models for meaningful change. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “Humans will human. Without accountability, it's not a good thing.” – Christopher Ayoub “Good intentions paved the way to hell, and we've created our own hell. What we see as a church in the US is only 111 years old.” – Nathan Apffel “The Christian church alone has enough financial resources to radically transform the world, and it wouldn't affect anybody's bottom line.” – Nathan Apffel “Anybody that's already operating in integrity will continue to do so. The only people that are going to struggle are those who have to switch over to becoming transparent.” – Matt Beaudreau Takeaways: Demand transparency from your church or nonprofit organization. Ask to see detailed financial reports and understand how donations are being used. Shift your support to smaller, community-focused ministries and charities that can demonstrate a high percentage of funds going directly to impact. Educate yourself on the legal and regulatory differences between churches and secular nonprofits. Understand the lack of oversight for many religious institutions. Become an active, engaged donor. Don't just write a check - seek out organizations that are making a measurable difference and hold them accountable. Consider supporting for-profit social enterprises that have pledged a portion of their profits to charitable causes. This model may be more effective than traditional nonprofits. Conclusion: The lack of transparency and accountability in the religious and nonprofit sectors raises serious concerns about the misuse of resources and misalignment with stated missions. Many organizations operate without adequate oversight, undermining donor trust and diminishing their impact. To address this, donors should be empowered to make informed decisions, while supporting smaller, community-driven efforts that prioritize direct impact. Exploring alternative approaches, such as for-profit social enterprises, can also help create meaningful change and rebuild confidence in these institutions.

To many people, faith and religion are the same thing. This is certainly true some of the time, but not in every situation. Doug and Craig spoke the perspective of faith as deep belief and the way that belief can truly bring people together even if the nature of their beliefs are different. When we take this broader view of faith-based organizations, it becomes apparent that nearly everybody is engaged in some form of faith-based endeavor. Doug's business specializes in partnering with companies and non-profits to create value and capture cost savings without layoffs to fund growth and strengthen financial results.  You can find out more athttp://www.terminalvalue.biz ( www.TerminalValue.biz) You can find the audio podcast feed athttp://www.terminalvaluepodcast.com ( www.TerminalValuePodcast.com) You can find the video podcast feed athttp://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV5a4QbT-dXhpgb-8HJHdGg ( www.youtube.com/channel/UCV5a4QbT-dXhpgb-8HJHdGg) Schedule time with Doug to talk about your business athttp://www.meetdoug.biz ( www.MeetDoug.Biz) [Music] [Introduction] Welcome to the terminal value Podcast where each episode provides in depth insight about the long term value of companies and ideas in our current world. Your host for this podcast is Doug Utberg, the founder and principal consultant for Business of Life, LLC. Doug: Welcome to the terminal value podcast, I have Craig Carter on the line. And Craig has the auspicious notoriety of being my former boss when I worked at Intel. But that's actually not what we're here, what we're here to talk about today, what we're here to talk about is Craig's life passion, which is running a face faith based organization within the Intel network. And in particular, what I'd like to talk about today is that, of course, the political environment is crazy right now. And you're trying to really stick to your mission of a faith based organization while navigating that political environment. Craig, welcome. And thank you for your time.  Craig: Well, thanks Doug. It's good to be here. Doug: So just tell us some of the experiences you've been having, you know, because of course, right, you know, the, there's, you know, it's interesting how what happens in the media is you always only see the crazy people on the media, you don't ever see, hey, these are normal people wanting to help people get through the the travails of their life that they feel like they can't talk about talk to anybody about that's not interesting. So nobody posts articles about that.  Craig: True. Doug: That's probably 99% of what you do. But of course, the the things you're going to hear are somebody who makes some sort of, you know, horrendously offensive racial remark, and people say, that's so terrible. And it's like, Well, okay, okay. Yes, it is terrible, but it's not representative of everybody who have a particular face.  Craig: True. Doug: I'm you You must have been dealing with this, Craig. Actually, I know you've been dealing with it, because we've been talking. Craig: Yes absolutely. Doug: To you a softball question. Craig: We've you. We've been talking a lot over the years. So let me maybe give a quick recap. And that can kind of walk into this. And then we can take it from there, Doug. So I've been involved with the different Christian groups. Doug: Yeah. Craig: Here at Intel for probably two decades or so. And then just even I was about.  Doug: You don't look anywhere ear that old Craig. Nice. I'm just so I'm, you look, you look every year that old? Craig: Thanks, is I look at you through my aggressive lens this year.  Doug: Exactly.  Craig: Yes. And yeah. So I paint the ground there just to look a little old.  Doug: Yeah. I do the same Craig: So been doing this for like 20 years, and it's been really neat. And then this last fall, felt led to reach out to people of other faiths and to get to know these other leaders of...

Federal policy states that their research and education grants must comply with all Federal law, regulations, and policies. Yale is receiving federal grants, so their discrimination of religion is violating federal policy. Learn more at FirstLiberty.org/Briefing. When a student group demanded that Yale Law School end financial assistance to students choosing to intern or work for faith-based organizations, Yale complied.  Now, they’re under investigation. Yale University’s endowment is $29.4 billion. Yet, it receives in excess of $480millionin federal grants and contracts.  As a private institution, Yale is entitled to discriminate on the basis of religion; however, under federal policy, federal contractors and grant recipients are not. Now, Senator Ted Cruz, chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution, has opened an investigation.  The question is whether Yale’s new policy runs afoul of President Trump’s Executive Order designed to improve “Free Inquiry, Transparency, and Accountability at Colleges and Universities.” According to the EO, the various federal agencies administering grants and contracts to the nation’s top institutions of higher learning are to, “take appropriate steps . . . to ensure institutions that receive Federal research or education grants promote free inquiry, including through compliance with all applicable Federal laws, regulations, and policies.” Yale Law School’s policy of “no stipends for religious work” violates this policy.  Taxpayers should not subsidize that decision with a half billiondollars in aid.  Religious organizations provide tremendous value to the citizens of this country.  Yale’s policy treats them as a scourge.  To learn how First Liberty is protecting religious liberty for all Americans, visit FirstLiberty.org.

A multifaith team of guest editors, led by Ellen Idler, and comprising Anwar Khan, Jeff Levin, and Tyler VanderWeele, has assembled a set of articles illustrating how faith-based organizations have contributed to public health at the local, state, or global levels. I further discuss if the mission of public health is compatible with views expressed by some religious congregations that appear to contradict the fundamental principles of equity and health. My interviewees are Ellen Idler (Emory), Bill Foege (Emory), Rob, Pyne (St Norbert) , and Mimi Kiser (Emory).

Church Safety and Security Teams David and Mark speak with guest, William, about establishing an All-Hazards response team and protocol for places of worship.  William is a retired US Navy SEAL who now serves as the Director of Campus Security for a large church and attached private school in Middle Tennessee.  This episode is packed full of no-nonsense, practical answers to some challenging questions.  We hope that it helps you inspire conversation and improved safety at your own church, synagogue, temple or place of worship.  Be sure to view the show notes or visit our website for more resources related to this topic.   About William: We are only using William's first name partially for the sake of operational security and also to establish some separation between his role as a Subject Matter Expert and his day job working for his church.  The leadership team at his church was very supportive of him joining us and hope that this makes other congregations safer, but they are obviously not in the business of providing security consultation to other organizations. William is the Director of Campus Security for a large (5,000+ members) church and private school in Middle Tennessee.  His security career began with 20-years in the US Navy as a SEAL and as a Master EOD Technician (bomb tech). Additionally, he served as the Vice President for Security and Emergency Preparedness at the Los Angeles Dodgers for multiple seasons, served as the Deputy Director for the largest regulatory program within the Dept. of Homeland Security overseeing the security for over 450 federalized airports, and as a firearms and tactics instructor at the Institute of Police Science, Metropolitan DC Police Department. William holds a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management from Southern Illinois University, was selected to pilot the first Transportation Leadership Program in 2010 at the University of Southern California's Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events, and is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) with the American Society for Industrial Security, International.   Episode Resources: 1.  http://www.carlchinn.com Carl Chinn's website exists to help Houses of Worship and Faith-Based Organizations (FBO's) recognize the need for intentional security and to provide simple concepts for starting or improving security programs.  The "Deadly Force History" section is where Carl keeps a log of deadly force events at Faith Based Organizations, the number of which is staggeringly high.   2.  https://www.fema.gov/plan FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) has published a report entitled "Engaging Faith-Based and Community Organizations: Planning Considerations for Emergency Managers".   3.  https://thomrainer.com/2018/01/new-normal-church-security/ While not directly mentioned in the episode, this was a reference item that David used in preparation for the discussion.  This article discusses some of the resistance to security measures by the "vocal minority" in some congregations, and also some of the reasons why so many churches are adopting security programs.   4.  https://www.christianitytoday.com/edstetzer/2017/november/church-security-how-do-we-keep-our-people-safe-in-world-whe.html This is another research source that David used but was not directly mentioned in the show.  More information about past violent incidents at churches and Faith Based Organizations and discussion on some of the challenges that smaller churches face when establishing safety teams.   Connect With Us After the Show!
