About a decade ago now, my mom read a WWII-era historical thriller novel called Mr. Churchill's Secretary and became an instant fan of both the main character - Maggie Hope, an intrepid young spy, and codebreaker who rose up to meet the challenges of that time - as well as author Susan Elia MacNeal. In the years that followed, she would eagerly anticipate each new installment and I remember going to track down a few on pub day at Barnes and Noble.A New York Times bestselling novelist of not only the Maggie Hope series, but also her recently published standalone book Mother Daughter Traitor Spy, in the last decade, MacNeal has won the Barry Award and also been nominated for the Edgar, Macavity, Agatha, Left Coast Crime, Dilys, and ITW Thriller awards.Joining me to discuss first her new book as well as her writing and research process, Susan and I then dive into the world of spies in the films North By Northwest, Valkyrie, and BlacKkKlansman in a fun and fascinating hour of conversation.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveLogo: Kate Gabrielle (KateGabrielle.com)Originally Posted on Patreon (10/19/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/73508358

Tired of your quiet routine? How about leaving your computer games behind and taking up an extreme sport? You can ride a bicycle, right? In that case you're halfway to becoming a mountain biker. All you have to do is take your bike off the road and try some rough terrain. Mountain biking was developed in California in the 1970s and became an Olympic sport in 1996. In the London 2012 games athletes had to navigate a 4.7-kilometre track in less than two hours. Not challenging enough? Skydivers jump from aircraft at an altitude of 1,000 to 4,000 metres. You have to be fit but there's no age limit with this sport. Dilys Price from Cardiff went on her first jump aged 54. The minute she came down she wanted to go up again. "I was hooked", said Dilys. Some adrenaline junkies are even bolder – they've invented base jumping, in which people leap from tall structures, such as buildings or bridges, with a parachute. Many of their stunts aren't legal, especially in urban areas. Dan Witchalls has jumped off The Shard - London's 310 metre-high skyscraper - four times. He says: "Base jumping is scarier than jumping out of a plane. In a plane there's no perception of height, but when you are standing on the edge of the building you can see people and cars - it makes it very real."It seems there's no lack of imagination when it comes to risking life to look cool and get the heart pounding. Surfing, scuba diving, rock climbing… How about turning one of your chores into a daredevil pursuit? 'Extreme ironing' isn't for wimps! Pressing your shirt on top of a mountain could be dangerous, depending on the mountain. Extreme ironing is said to have been created in the 1990s in the English town of Leicester by a man who saw a pile of wrinkled clothes and felt bored. That was Phil Shaw who also won the only Extreme Ironing Championships ever held, in Germany in 2002. For him, the thrill of this sport comes from looking at the spectators' faces. Shaw says: "Sometimes they look confused, sometimes they laugh. It's fun to see how people respond to it."词汇表an extreme sport 极限运动a mountain biker 山地车车手terrain 地带,地面to navigate 骑车通过,对付(艰险路面)a skydiver 跳伞者,跳伞运动员altitude 海拔高度fit 身体健康的,健壮的hooked 着迷了,上瘾了adrenaline junkie 寻求刺激的人(喜欢肾上腺素带来的兴奋感的人)bolder 更勇敢无畏a stunt 惊险动作,特技to pound (心脏)怦怦地跳scuba diving 水肺潜水a chore 令人讨厌的琐事,家务活a daredevil pursuit 大胆的追求a wimp 软弱的人wrinkled 皱巴巴的,有皱的a thrill 刺激,兴奋感

Before this episode, if someone asked me what could be done to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes, one of the last things on my mind would have been “kindness” because that part should be obvious, right? Wrong. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Afulani and Dr.Walker, two faculty members in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and affiliates with the Institute of Global Health Sciences at UCSF. They share information about the disparities in women’s health and the importance of patient-centered care across the globe, particularly in these pandemic times, where navigating patient interactions with physicians can be varied and complex.

In this episode, we're learning how to go after our career while honouring and maintaining our health.  Sarah Dilys Cuddy founded Zsofi, a wellness test kit with physician-created tips and tricks customized to your own results. After her mom passed away from hormone-sensitive breast cancer, Sarah's high-stress, work-driven, lawyer lifestyle drastically changed. It turns out she had had severe hormonal imbalances. She was overwhelmed, over-exercising but overweight, and had cystic acne. She wanted to balance her hormones without the steep price tag of hiring a naturopath.  Zsofi gives you the tools to be the CEO of your own health. Sarah says that each test reveals something new about your hormones and gets you one step closer to optimal hormonal health. Zsofi is made by women for women. They are 100% female funded and founded and Sarah's team is made up of mostly women under 35! If Zsofi sounds like a right fit for you and your hormones, Sarah has so graciously given us a discount code to receive $25 off your testing kit. This week we are joined by someone who is an enormous inspiration to me, the visionary Professor Dilys Williams, Founder and Director of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion and Professor of Fashion Design for Sustainability, who previously designed for the legendary fashion designer & activist, Katharine Hamnett and also for Liberty. After being confronted with the stark disparity between the image and earnings of the big fashion brands and the farmers and garment workers they employ, she realised that as a fashion designer she was implicated in the injustices and decided to learn more about her industry. Ignited by what she uncovered, she eventually founded the CSF, a University of the Arts, a London research, education and knowledge exchange centre that helps brands and the future generation of fashion designers to achieve social and ecological equity in their work. In this episode, we speak about how she put sustainability at the forefront of all of her work, why the climate crisis, social injustice and gender inequality are interconnected, and how the surge of small and sustainable fashion labels are leading the way.The ask: Decide what it is you care about in the world, and think about if what you’re buying represents you. Working 50 years for babies and families: Child Psychotherapist Dilys Daws legacy interview

It's not an exaggeration to say that Dilys Daws' contribution to the field of child mental health and child psychotherapy has been immense. Spanning over five decades, her career as a Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist is notable in many respects as a clinician and shaping public opinion and government policy about the importance of infant mental health. In the 1980's Dilys began speaking to the public and government about the work of child psychotherapists with their patients, raising awareness of the profession and the difficulties babies and parents experience in a way that had never been done before. Her books, such as Through the Night, which focus on the difficulties infants and parents experience , have become classics for therapists and new parents alike. Their popularity is perhaps due to the fact that they are based on fifty years of careful observation of babies and their families, many of them spent in the same baby clinic. It is Dilys' ability to influence government policy and collaborate with different child professions, as well as her extraordinary clinical work which is really quite remarkable which mark her out as one of the most important child psychotherapists of her generation. Because since 1976, Dilys has been transforming the lives of children and parents in what might be to some an unconventional setting for psychotherapeutic work. Each week she has been going to the James Wigg GP Practice, in Kentish Town, London to stand by the weighing scales, observing what takes place as parents bring in their babies to be checked. In this interview with Jane O'Rourke, hear Dilys discuss: Highlights: 3'00: Parent-infant work in the community setting of a baby clinic 5'00: The importance of child therapists being brave in their clinical work 7'40 How experiencing difficulty herself, as a young mother, led Dilys to become a child psychotherapist 13'05 How Dilys broke the taboo of child psychotherapists speaking to the media about child mental health in the early 1980's 13'55 The importance of acknowledging the emotional turmoil which having a new baby can provoke in parents. 17'00 The discoveries parents can make by observing their babies 18'00 The importance of helping new fathers who are struggling 21'13 Ghosts in the nursery: connections between a baby's problems and their parents' childhood traumas 24'25 The taboos of breastfeeding, such as the sensuality of it 30'00 A child psychotherapist's advice for others after nearly 60 years of clinical work Dilys Daws' writings and activities in promoting child psychotherapy are significant. In 1996 she set up the Association for Infant Mental Health UK, a networking body for professionals working with infants. Dilys cofounded the Child Psychotherapy Trust in 1989 and had a significant role in developing awareness of child psychotherapy in the UK among the public and the government. Following this, the training for child psychotherapy was negotiated by the Association for Child Psychotherapy within the NHS. It was during this time under her tenure in the early 1990's, that she encouraged fellow child psychotherapists to speak to the media about child mental health and the difficulties their patients were experiencing - and perhaps broke a taboo that had existed until then.

This week's programme marks the life of Dilys Price OBE, who's died at the age of 88. Dilys was perhaps best known as the world’s oldest female skydiver. A remarkable woman whose infectious enthusiasm inspired everyone who met her, she was a dancer, teacher, public speaker, the founder of the Cardiff based Touch Trust, working with people with disabilities, and much more. Her life was one of ups and downs – quite literally – including in her relationship with her Christian faith – and in 2018, at the age of 86, she added to her list of achievements working as a fashion model. She grew up in a Bible College where her family welcomed Jewish refugees who'd arrived in Swansea on the Kindertransport, and as a young woman she learnt to dance with the celebrated Rudolf Laban, a German exile who had fallen foul of the Nazis at the 1933 Berlin Olympics. A whirlwind romance in the 1950s saw her marry the man she'd got engaged to on the evening they first met, and on retiring from a career as a dance teacher and educator she founded the Touch Trust in the late 1990s, just in time to become part of the new Wales Millennium Centre. In September 2018, Mary Stallard met her to talk about her journey of faith through the - sometimes literal - ups and downs of a remarkable life.
