News around public lands these days seems to revolve entirely around the Trump administration. In the case of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, many of the steps the administration is taking with the operational efficiencies of the National Park Service and other land management agencies certainly are keeping PEER busy.   But what exactly is PEER, and what is their mission? For as long as the National Parks Traveler has been in existence, going back 20 years, stories recounting PEER and its lawsuits against land-management agencies have appeared frequently in our coverage. To explain the nonprofit organization's role, our guest today is Tim Whitehouse, PEER's executive director.

This month: In this episode of Common Ground Radio, we discuss PFAS “forever chemical” contamination on farms and actions that are being taken on the state and federal level to protect farmers and eaters, including the recent lawsuit filed against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calling for regulation of a primary source of PFAS contamination — sewage sludge applied to farmland as fertilizer — under the Clean Water Act. Due to the practice of land-applying sludge containing PFAS, farmers here in Maine and across the country have been unknowingly contaminating their land, and consequently the food we eat. Sarah Alexander, MOFGA’s executive director, and Laura Dumais, staff counsel with Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, talk about ways to mitigate contamination and reduce public health risks. List of subjects: -PFAS “forever chemicals” -PFAS contamination on farmland -PFAS in sewage sludge -Impact of PFAS contamination on farmers -PFAS legislation in Maine and at the federal level -Lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Guest/s: Sarah Alexander, executive director of MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association) Laura Dumais, staff counsel with PEER (Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility) FMI: About PFAS — mofga.org/pfas Take action on PFAS — mofga.org/advocacy/take-action-on-pfas “Lawsuit to Prevent PFAS in Biosolid Fertilizer Expands” — mofga.org/news/epa-lawsuit Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility — peer.org PEER petition to tell EPA to get PFAS out of pesticides — peer.org/petition-tell-epa-to-get-pfas-out-of-pesticides PEER petition to save America's farms from toxic contamination — peer.org/petition-save-americas-farms-from-toxic-contamination About the hosts: Holli Cederholm has been involved in organic agriculture since 2005 when she first apprenticed on a small farm. The Bureau of Land Management oversees 245 million acres of public land across the U.S. More than 60% of that rangeland is being managed through leased livestock grazing allotments in Oregon and nine other Western states. But according to the nonpartisan Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, livestock grazing is the main reason why nearly 60 million acres of BLM rangeland fail the agency’s own standards for land health, which are used to assess soil and water quality, among other factors. High Country News recently reported on PEER’s findings, which also found that BLM state offices are increasingly relying on a federal loophole to renew grazing permits and leases without environmental review, especially in Oregon, Nevada and Idaho.  Peter Lattin is a landscape ecologist, geospatial analyst in Oregon who was working for a contractor that was hired by BLM in 2010 to conduct regional ecological assessments. He resigned from his position when he was told by BLM officials not to include the impact of livestock grazing on land health assessments. He then shared his concerns with PEER and worked with the organization to obtain BLM records through the Freedom of Information Act. Lattin and PEER used that data to create an interactive map that shows the impact of livestock grazing on public land. Chandra Rosenthal is the director of PEER’s Rocky Mountain office in Denver. They join us to talk about their findings.

Today, we delve into an increasingly critical aspect of technology and electronics manufacturing - the pursuit of environmentally responsible electronics manufacturing. Our industry has witnessed many environmental revolutions.  The elimination of popular cleaning solvents brought on by the Montreal Protocol in 1989, soon followed by strict VOC regulations pertaining to cleaning chemicals. The switch from lead-based solders to lead-free alloys, led by the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, known as RoHS, implemented within the EU in 2003 and adopted nearly worldwide, regulations regarding the disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) resulting in many countries mandating regulations and programs for the safe recycling and disposal of electronic products, and more. These regulations and others have inspired some companies to seek eco-friendly alternatives to traditional printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication.  The combination of numerous environmental regulations has resulted in many companies' implementation of sustainability programs. As our world becomes more connected, the demand for electronic devices continues to rise, and with it, the importance of mitigating the environmental impact of their production. On this episode of The Reliability Matters Podcast, Mike Konrad speaks with Mark S. Edwards. Mark wrote an article entitled “Environmentally Responsible Alternatives to Traditional PCB Fabrication.”  He works as a strategic account manager within MacDermid Alpha Electronics Solutions, on the global Business Development team for Circuitry Solutions. Mark has been involved in electronics manufacturing since the late 1980s and brings a passion for process automation, circuit assembly, solders/fluxes, adhesives, coatings and PCB fabrication – all with a focus on repeatability and reliability.  Edwards holds a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering technology from Oklahoma State University and began his career at a defense electronics company in Dallas, Texas, that was later acquired by Raytheon.  He has uncovered trends and synthesized customer needs for electronic hardware in the telecommunications, defense, automotive, industrial controls segments in the Americas, and now globally, in his newest role.   Chapters: 00:00:00 - The Pursuit of Environmentally Responsible Electronics Manufacturing 00:02:23 - Uncovering Trends in Electronic Hardware 00:04:56 - Circuit Board Fabrication and Environmental Responsibility 00:07:25 - The Changing Priorities of the Manufacturing Industry 00:09:40 - Green Alternatives to Traditional Circuit Boards 00:11:59 - Sustainable Alternatives to PCB Fabrication 00:14:21 - Fabrication Performance and Reliability 00:16:43 - Green PCB Fabrication Challenges and Obstacles 00:18:58 - The Challenges of Adopting Greener Solutions 00:21:22 - Environmental Sustainability in the Supply Chain 00:23:43 - Environmental Impact of PCB Fabrication Methods 00:28:20 - The Disappointment of EV 85 Fuel 00:31:07 - The Cost Implication of Going Green 00:33:31 - Recycling and the Circular Economy 00:35:55 - Recycling Circuit Boards and Extracting Precious Metals 00:38:15 - Simplifying the PCB Fabrication Process 00:40:40 - The Importance of Standards and Regulations in the Electronics Industry 00:42:54 - Demand for Environmental Responsibility in PCB Fabrication 00:45:10 - The Importance of Sustainability in the Supply Chain 00:47:20 - The Importance of Sustainability in Circuit Assembly 00:49:49 - Environmental Impact of Board Fabrication 00:52:02 - The Green Movement in Business

Make it real. If it's window dressing or something like that, you will very soon lose traction within the employees or your other stakeholders. So make it real. Understand what your stakeholders want. Not that you can always do things for all of the stakeholders, but you can prioritize the ones where you can do that. By doing that, look to create some real value, both in terms of the companies that you work for, but also in the communities and the people in and outside of the business which will also be impacted by what you do. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? You might find this actually a bit strange; greenwashing, or the fact that greenwashing is now being looked at more closely. Right now, as I said earlier, we really are doing things in a way that is having a positive impact. We want to continue doing that. It is also important that people who make big announcements about things but aren't really delivering anything are called out. You see in the SEC in the USA that's already happened. There has been some falling out in terms of greenwashing. I also think that the way that legislation is changing in the EU, the European Union Corporate Sustainability Reporting Director, for instance, and link to the taxonomy, means that you can't make claims as easily as you could do before without actually backing them up better. For me that's a really good thing. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? This is something actually when I was doing my master's degree I was referred to and read and that is Small is Beautiful. It's a book by E. F. Schumacher. He entitled it Small is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered. I love that part because if people matter in what we do, then we generally respect the social dimension of things and the environmental and the financial aspects of what we do. Within that book, he talks about the use of natural resources and how we actually value those things, along with how people contribute negatively or positively to those things. What reminded me a bit of it was, I was actually at a conference on putting people into sustainability in London last week. What I thought was quite an interesting point: on the balance sheet, a robot is seen as an asset, but on the balance sheet, a person or people are seen as costs. That seems a bit strange that people are seen as a negative and a robot is seen as a positive. Looking at how we put people into sustainability discussion is a very important thing. And hence, I like that book. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? There's lots on the internet that you can use, but I get most of my inspiration from other companies and other people and listening to what they're doing. I think networking and that respect is probably the most beneficial way of actually being challenged and seeing how we can do things better. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Jabil? The best thing is to go to our sustainability pages on our website. You'll see we have some great resources there. We've got some blocks from my team and other members on circular economy, on how to create a strategy for carbon reduction. We really would like some feedback on that and to see if other people are finding the same challenges, and also, I think our solutions may be helpful.

Can the study of religion be justified? Scholarship in religion, especially work in "theory and method," is preoccupied with matters of research procedure and thus inarticulate about the goals that motivate scholarship in the field. For that reason, the field suffers from a crisis of rationale. Richard B. Miller identifies six prevailing methodologies in the field, and then offers an alternative framework for thinking about the purposes of the discipline. Shadowing these various methodologies, he notes, is a Weberian scientific ideal for studying religion, one that aspires to value-neutrality. This ideal fortifies a "regime of truth" that undercuts efforts to think normatively and teleologically about the field's purpose and value. Miller's alternative framework, Critical Humanism, theorizes about the ends rather than the means of humanistic scholarship. Why Study Religion? (Oxford UP, 2021) offers an account of humanistic inquiry that is held together by four values: Post-critical Reasoning, Social Criticism, Cross-cultural Fluency, and Environmental Responsibility. Ordered to such purposes, Miller argues, scholars of religion can relax their commitment to matters of methodological procedure and advocate for the value of studying religion. The future of religious studies will depend on how well it can articulate its goals as a basis for motivating scholarship in the field. What does the future look like for service industries? Michael Andreacchi's award-winning waste removal company offers us an inspiring blueprint. Michael is the CEO and Co-Founder of Junk King LLC, an international waste removal franchise with a focus on recycling, touted for being ‘North America's greenest junk removal service'. He is an innovative business leader in the junk removal industry with strong experience in franchising, high growth business expansion, environmental sustainability, and operational excellence. Junk King was founded from a garage in 2005 by Michael and his friend in San Carlos, California. The idea was simple: Offer great customer service and recycle way, way more than their competitors. Today, Junk King is the #1 Rated junk removal service in North America, with 100+ locally-owned franchises in 37 states and Canada. We have a lot to learn from Michael Andreacchi. Begin with a strong mission. Michael and his friend founded Junk King with a simple but powerful goal: Recycle the most, and do the best job at it. Michael and his Co-Founder Brian Reardon looked around and realized that there was a need in their area for a junk removal company that delivered faster, friendlier and more environmentally-conscious service. Because of their determination and commitment to excellence, Junk King now recycles up to 50% of all the debris they haul. Stay open to change. Michael spent time and energy observing opportunities for growth and change within the junk removal industry, implementing changes slowly until he had an award-winning combination of old-school customer service and new technology.  With a customer-centric mindset, Junk King set out to use technology like easy junk pickup scheduling software, a progressive recycling system and modern methods of tracking labor costs. By remaining open to change, Junk King was able to move towards duplicability.  Replication is the key to scaling your company. Junk King created methods and guidelines for serving people in a warm, personal way using modern technology. Realizing they could create massive environmental change and thousands of jobs, they decided to expand by exploring a franchise model. Now, Michael shares his lessons about franchising and maintaining company culture across state lines and national borders.  Quotes “Franchising is a great opportunity to start your own business because there's so much support. You get that partner immediately built in that's invested in the same goals as you. We can launch our franchises in 6-8 weeks. There's a lot of value in buying an existing business or starting a franchise!” “Our training is centered around, what is the culture you want to build for your franchise?” “We're collaborative. I always know what's going on, but we're very relaxed. We work hard and play hard, and everyone still hits deadlines and we scale the company.” “Our software allows us to run the business efficiently. We've been building it since 2-3 years in. We started with scheduling software and it has evolved into a massive proprietary software that tracks every KPI… labor costs, dumping fees, a pricing estimator, finance, and a phone system. It's a pretty robust system!” “When we brought in a really good marketer, it helped the brand tremendously. Hire smart people!” “Don't be afraid to market. You have to spend money to make money, and we tried different marketing programs. You don't know until you try…and you do have to build your brand!” “You have to get more granular and more invested in your community. We ask, how can we do better at being involved in the community locally?” Links mentioned in this episode: Check out the Junk King website online at https://www.junk-king.com/  Explore franchise opportunities with Junk King and help make your area greener and cleaner by visiting their franchising page at https://franchising.junk-king.com/ View current careers at Junk King by visiting their hiring website at https://junk-king-careers.careerplug.com/jobs  Read current articles about sustainability, recycling and the waste industry on the Junk King Blog at https://info.junk-king.com/  Subscribe to the Junk King newsletter to receive recycling info and helpful advice to help keep your items out of landfills and into the hands of the people who need them! https://signup.e2ma.net/signup/1958542/1943194/  Follow Junk King on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/junkking_corporate/?hl=en
