Today’s date in 1962 marks the birthday in New Orleans of Terence Blanchard, the American jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator. “I come from a family of musicians,” says Blanchard. “My father was an opera singer, my mother played piano and taught voice, my grandfather played the guitar. What I wanted was to be a jazz musician, have a band, travel and create music.” Well, he got his wish! Blanchard started piano at age 5 and trumpet at 8, playing music with childhood friends Wynton and Branford Marsalis at summer music camps and studied composition with their father, Ellis Marsalis. In 1980, while still in his teens, Blanchard began performing with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and later Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. In the 1990s Blanchard started writing film and TV scores and has composed more than forty of them to date. In 2019 was nominated for an Academy Award for his music for Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman.” In addition to holding major teaching positions and touring with his quintet, the E- Collective, the amazingly energetic and productive Terence Blanchard is also working on an opera titled Fire Shut up In My Bones that is scheduled to be premiered at the Metropolitan Opera.

Ten years ago the Australian artist Gotye asked New Zealand musician Kimbra to feature on his song “Somebody I Used To Know.” At the time Kimbra had no idea it was going to be a hit. No wonder—the song lacks the trappings of a conventional pop song. The chorus shows up late and it only repeats once in a track composed of an obscure Brazilian guitar sample and nursery rhyme xylophones.   But this slow burner about opposing sides in a relationship's bitter end found a global audience, ascending to No. 1 in more than 25 countries, and accumulating billions of plays across streaming platforms. In 2013, Prince anointed Gotye and Kimbra the Grammy for record of the year (it won best pop duo/group performance as well). The song created many opportunities for both Gotye and Kimbra, but both chose unconventional paths, resisting the industry’s desire to generate the next hit for hits sake. Reflecting on the song a decade later, Kimbra spoke with Charlie Harding from the podcast Switched On Pop about how this unlikely song inspired her to pursue her singular musical vision, and how it feels to be yet again co-nominated for a 2021 Grammy for her collaboration with Jacob Collier and Tank and The Bangas on “In My Bones.” SONGS DISCUSSED Gotye - Somebody I Used to Know (feat. This Blues-Based Rock and Roll band got started by a chance meeting at a Karaoke dive bar.  So...we've coined Sometimes Julie as a "Dive Band!"  The band's name originated from that same place; however, it took about 6 months before they figured out what to call it.  Monica and Rick casually tell that story in this episode.  Basically, as Monica puts it, "We're all just aspiring to be Julie." They began as just the two of them but quickly expanded their sound while developing the band's focus.  Sappy love songs were the start of Monica's writing, but the team worked together on their writing and developed "Head First," an album that ended up winning them multiple awards! We play three songs off of their newest album titled "Breaking" and break down (pun not intended) their writing and inspirations.  Especially one line that Big Jon picks up on.  The power and emotion they pack into these songs might give you chills or inspire you...and the musicianship of their complement might just blow your mind.  Alberto with his monster leads and Bruce with his killer bass lines.  Their drummer is new, so we don't get to hear John's licks quite yet, but they're heading into the studio for more recordings soon, and you can always find out where to go and see them at www.sometimesjulie.com 09:54 "Breaking" 26:58 "In My Bones" 42:04 "Picking Up The Pieces" The Dusty Futon, LLC is focused on providing FREE tools and exposure to LOCAL and INDEPENDENT artists in the Southern California through networking.  If you love what we do and want to support us, please consider viewing our Patreon page at Patreon.com/TheDustyFuton.  You can always find us at www.DustyFuton.com and email us at admin@dustyfuton.com

They’ve being nominated for Roots Artists of the Year by the British Columbia Country Music Association, have signed on with the country music power house management team at Sakamoto Entertainment and inked a recording deal Warner Music Canada/Slaight Music. The Washboard Union is made up of 6 members based out of Vancouver, British Columbia that are led by principles Aaron Grain, Chris Duncombe and David Roberts. The three share a very similar unconscious soundtrack and unbridled love for the art of songwriting and storytelling.  The Washboard Union is an authentic blend of where country and bluegrass have come and where they are headed next. It is for that reason that the band has earned so many fans along the way. Serving notice that they are not about to conform to convention, the band’s independently released self-titled debut album was produced by noted rock producers Garth "GGGarth" Richardson (Nickelback, Hedley) and Canadian Music Hall of Famer Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd). That record led to the band’s BC Country Music Association nomination. In January 2015, The Washboard Union returned to Nashville to record their latest EP In My Bones in the legendary RCA Studio A. The album was produced by Trey Bruce (Faith Hill, Randy Travis, Diamond Rio). The band met Trey after having written the song “Someday” together earlier in 2014. Trey called the band immediately after that first session and demanded he take the producer helm for the band's next record.
