Alright, film fanatics, gather round your audio devices! Dan and Sarah are back on Shoot the Hostage, and this week we've finally braved a cinematic experience that's less blockbuster and more… well, block-bust. We're talking about Martin Scorsese's 1982 gem (that the world collectively ignored), The King of Comedy. Settle in as we dissect this certified box office flop, a movie so unloved by initial audiences that, according to Entertainment Tonight, was the biggest flop of 1983. We'll be trying to unravel why this incredible film, starring the one and only Robert De Niro as the intensely awkward and delusional Rupert Pupkin, alongside the incomparable Jerry Lewis as the beleaguered talk show host Jerry Langford, somehow failed to connect with audiences despite the Scorsese touch. Was the world simply not ready for its cringe comedy and profoundly uncomfortable exploration of fame and obsession? We'll also be singing the praises (as we see fit) of Sandra Bernhard's gloriously unhinged performance as Masha, a character who redefines the term 'stan'.... We'll be tackling the burning questions: Was Rupert the proto-incel? Is his stand-up actually… good? And just how much inspiration did Joker shamelessly borrow from this criminally underseen cult film? (Spoiler: a metric tonne) What to expect from this episode: A deep dive into the mystery of why The King of Comedy was a certified box office flop yet has ascended to cult classic status. Our unfiltered opinions on the unforgettable performances of Robert De Niro, the surprisingly serious Jerry Lewis, and the absolute revelation that is Sandra Bernhard. A look at the film's unsettlingly contemporary themes of celebrity worship, the desperate pursuit of fame, and the dark side of parasocial relationships. Our reliably questionable humour and Dan's ongoing battle with basic pronunciation. So, if you're a devotee of Martin Scorsese, fascinated by movies that flopped at the box office, or simply seeking a podcast that appreciates a truly unique and disturbingly prescient film, then congratulations, you've found your tribe! Subscribe now so you don't miss our descent into the delusional world of a wannabe comedy king! Still on the rebound after having my heart broken. (By the LA Fitness closing at Coldwater and Chandler) You basically need the shields from the Tim Burton Batman Batmobile in LA if you want your car to not be destroyed, broken into, vandalized, etc. I definitely go to Chipotle too much. I messed around with AI images and it blew my feeble mind. Mr Penis Powers came to town, and lead to a plethora of gallivanting. Seeing King Of Comedy in a theater was a whole different experience than I would have anticipated.
We knew it was coming, but a few years ago the passing of Jerry Lewis still caught me by surprise. I'm well aware he wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I sure was a fan. In this quick, five-minute Pocket Sized Pep Talk, I'll remind you that Jerry was more than just a comedian—he was a trailblazer, an innovator, and a philanthropist who left an undeniable mark on the world.

This week Sarah and MJ discuss the under-appreciated Martin Scorsese movie, The King of Comedy. We get into the Joker of it all (unfortunately), the skilful way the film flirts with what is real and what isn't, as well as discussing our own fleeting brushes with internet fame via viral tweets.
“Shapes & Forms" There's nothing Sandra Bernhard can't do: she's an actor, a singer, a comic, a radio host, an author and a pioneer of the one-woman show and the list goes on. I was going to say that in many ways, Sandra Bernhard is the Shohei Ohtani of entertainment, but that's not totally accurate because she's been around longer, so the right way to say it is Shoehei Ohtani is the Sandra Bernhard of baseball. The Michigan-born, Arizona-raised Sandra Bernhard is nothing short of a cosmic force. She's been in over 40 movies like The King Of Comedy, Playing Mona Lisa and Zoolander and she's been in over fifty television shows like The Richard Pryor Show, Pee-Wee's Playhouse, Roseanne, Will and Grace, The Larry Sanders Show, Dr. Katz, Broad City, American Horror Story and the Sopranos. Her CV is packed with riches, so keep in mind this is just me sifting through the gold and it's really a partial list because there's so much. She's performed on Broadway, appeared on Letterman almost 30 times, put out a handful of great albums, and wrote three amazing books, including the essay collection Love, Love and Love. She's got a great run of shows on the West Coast as part of her Easy Listening tour, where she'll play her favorite songs as a kid. Then, under the Shapes& Forms banner she'll have a multi-night stand at Joe's Pub in New York City at the end of the month. Along with her Sandyland Squad Band, Bernhard will play new material and old favorites. www.sandrabernhard.com (www.sandrabernhard.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (www.bombshellradio.com) Stereo Embers IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Ben and Rob get what they deserve for ‘Joker', Todd Phillips' 2019 character study smuggled into box-office history under a supervillains cape. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz and Frances Conroy, ‘Joker' tells the story of mentally unwell and financially destitute Arthur Fleck and his journey to become a stand-up comedian; a journey that takes a terrifying wrong turn when Gotham repeatedly turns it back on his suffering. The film lacking an appearance from Batman didn't stop ‘Joker' delighting DC Comics fans as deeply as the critics; becoming the first R rated movie to cross the billion dollar mark at the box office. But how did this seventies morality tale get green-lit in the first place? What inspired Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix as they concocted this beautifully affecting film? Is this film just ripping off Scorcese's ‘King Of Comedy'? Barry Murphy is an Irish comedy legend. Not only was he one of the geniuses behind the brilliance of Après Match but as a member of Mr Trellis he founded The Comedy Cellar in Dublin in 1989 AND he was recognised as one of The 10 Kings Of Irish Comedy over the last twenty years by Hot Press. He is also the only comedian to have played at every Kilkenny Cat Laughs festival since it started in 1994. So yeah, it's fair to say his legendary status is justified. In this week's episode Barry chats to Gareth and Gary about his beginnings in the comedy scene and how it's changed, his fond memories of Apres Match and the lads get into it about shallow frying. When people think DeNiro and Scorsese, it's generally mob hits or boxing rings. But 1983's "The King of Comedy" is an often-overlooked exploration of television fame that shows just how funny, dark and thought-provoking the actor-director pair can be in any genre. Listener Charlie in L.A., who brought us "Boogie Nights," is back with another stellar commission that led to some interesting topics, including when it's OK to ask for an autograph, who the new acting royalty is in Hollywood, whether Sandra Bernhard helped or hurt the movie and when being agreeable becomes creepy. If you've never thought much of Jerry Lewis, wondered where Todd Phillips got his inspiration for "Joker" or wanted to hear Gene gush over early '80s fashion, this is the episode for you. Rupert Pumpkin is back! This week, we are writing a sequel to Martin Scorsese's "The King of Comedy." Will the film answer whether the last film's climax took place within the protagonist's head? Will this be a legacy sequel or will we de-age Robert De Niro like "The Irishman" did? What's The Clash gotta do with all of this? Will Sam adopt Scorsese's four hour work days? Does our audience know what McCarthy-ism is? Will we be able to match Taika Waititi's godlike improv skills? Which of our former guests farted in any Oscar nominees office? Neither The King Of Comedy nor I Love Trouble were met with strong box office or enthusiastic reviews on their initial releases - but one has fared a lot better since.1982's The King Of Comedy would be the last time Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese would unite for many years - and for a long time it was a project that appealed more to De Niro than Scorsese. Still, after a damp initial response, the film's reputation has grown. A lot.Not so with 1994's I Love Trouble, a rare movie star-driven summer film from Disney in the early 1990s. Julia Roberts starred, but didn't sign on the dotted line until he co-star was chosen. That'd be Nick Nolte, and it wouldn't be a particularly successful pairing...Stories of both movies are told in this episode. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
When you think of a man named Rupert Pupkin, your imagination automatically places that creepy stache that the legendary Robert De Niro sports in 1983's The King of Comedy. That's right, it's a Scorsese double feature. We talked about Casino last episode and now we move to a much arguably sadder and darker film. As I mention in the episode, this movie is the cringe of the initial tryouts of every American Idol season all wrapped into one film. The homie Spencer joins me in discussing this great film. Humor in live performance has been around since the beginning of time. In the 1800s this kind of entertainment mostly showed up as live theater and minstrel shows filled with skits, costumes, singing, dancing, and yes, blackface. But performer Charley Case dared to do things differently. Without costume or props Charley Case simply stood there telling jokes and funny stories in the repeated cadence of a set-up, filler, and punchline - inventing what we now know as stand-up comedy.
