In volume 3 of the Pokémon manga we see many plot points start to resolve towards a satisfying climax, friends from unlikely places come together to fight the Rocket Gang and Red faces off against Mewtwo! Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com 118: Pokémon Adventures vol. 3 Chapters 28 to 40, ‘Peace of Mime' and ‘A Charizard… and a Champion' Story by Hidenori Kusaka Art by Mato English Translation by Kaori Inoue Lettering and touch up by Wayne Truman Continuing from the last chapter, Red's Pikachu uses the substitute move that makes the doppelganger Pikachu break through the barrier, meanwhile Gary's Golduck uses a psychic power to find a Mr.Mime responsible for the barrier and so they defeat it. Both Pokémon trainers, Green, Red and Blue head to the Silph building to fight Team Rocket, but the three are separated and trapped, Koga fights Gary using a Grimer disguised as armor, Red is trapped in an electrified room, powered by a captured Zapdos, he fights Lt. Surge who has special electric proof underwear. Green fights Sabrina under an illusionary veil and uses her Horsea's smoke screen to black it out, whilst using her scope to see through to Sabrina. Red uses his Ivysaur's Razor leaves to cut Lt.Surge's suit before cutting the cables attached to Zapdos. Surge is electrocuted by calling forth Zapdos' Thunder Shock. Koga is defeated with the Help of Red but Sabrina proves to be a challenge for Green; since Sabrina has personal psychic powers, she is able to predict Green's thoughts and actions. But eventually Sabrina is defeated by the song of Green's Jigglypuff. The fight is resolved when the Rocket gang flees the chaos of the Silph building and all the good Gym leaders join forces to surround them. Sabrina returns for one last final round but with Red's Ivysaur having evolved into Venusaur this results in all three of the starter Pokémon at their full power joining forces, combining water, fire, and earth to defeat the legendary bird Pokémon and Sabrina. In chapters 34 and 35, the incredibly destructive clone of Mew, Mewtwo, is on the loose. Red intends to capture Mewtwo but is helped by Blaine, the man who helped create Mewtwo and is bonded by DNA with the Monster. Red is told that if it feels outnumbered it will create tornados, in a one-on-one fight however Mewtwo is just as strong and capable of throwing down physically. Blaine breaks through the tornado and weakens Mewtwo but it costs Blaine an injury towards himself. Red seemingly goes against Blaine's advice and unleashes all his Pokémon on Mewtwo. Mewtwo summons another tornado. But the battle ends with Pikachu entering the eye of the storm, concealing a cheeky gift that is key to Mewtwo's capture. Afterwards, Red gets the final badge from Giovanni, and avenges all the Pokémon that was hurt by the Rocket gang. Concluding the volume, we have a mini-tournament arc where the trainers enter the Pokémon League, Red and Blue settle their differences and show each other how they have grown. But not before a mysterious figure from the past settles the score mid-tournament and Green is given a chance for redemption. And that concludes the first plot arc of Pokémon Adventures. Differences and Comparisons to other Media: · Although the Pokémon Golduck and Psyduck can use select psychic moves they are not in fact Psychic Pokémon, they are often believed to be a double elemental type of water and psychic but, they are just a water type. A reason why people believe this is due to other media such as the anime, trading card game and the manga showing them capable of using psychic power. · Like the Anime series and the videogame, Sabrina is not just a user of Psychic Pokémon but she also has Psychic powers of her own. · In the source material (the 1996 Pokémon Gameboy game) Sabrina uses a Venomoth in battle, although it has a psychic move it is only a poison and bug type. A possible reason as to why she uses this Pokémon could be to demonstrate the common “macabre moth motif” Adding to a theme of connecting to sprits of the deceased, with the moth being a symbol for the after-life and the transformation between death and rebirth. The “death's head” moth has added to this aesthetic/motif thanks to Edgar Allan Poe and Bram Stoker referencing it in their works ‘The Sphinx' and ‘Dracula', A moth also appears in ‘The Silence of the Lambs' by Thomas Harris. According to Kristen. M Stanton of Uniguide, The Japanese use moths to depict wandering spirits. · The Gym badges that Red collects are milestones for progress within the original 1996 videogame. And as mentioned in the manga, holding a badge result in Pokémon of a certain level obeying your commands as well as boosting their stats and allowing them to learn moves from hidden machines depending on the badge itself. Only by collecting all badges can the highest level and legendary Pokémon obey you. · Mewtwo made his first appearance in the anime alongside Mew through the first shot of the anime opening, a shot that would be imitated in the first movie as he flees Giovanni and flies in the air. He would make his canonical appearance in episode 63. Where Giovanni has him cloaked in a mysterious armor and uses him to fight trainers competing for his gym badge. Gary, a.k.a. Blue loses to Giovanni because of Mewtwo. Ash does not battle Mewtwo or Giovanni for reasons that are explained in the tie in movie. Instead, Giovanni allows Team Rocket's Jessie and James to take over as gym leaders only to have Ash defeat them for the badge. Where as in the manga, our hero defeats Giovanni after capturing Mewtwo. · Mew does not speak in his first appearance of the anime (episode 63) nor the game, he would however be shown later to speak telepathically in the first movie and throughout his appearances in the Super Smash Bros. Videogames, specifically the sequel to the original, Super Smash Bros: Melee References: · The quote from “the Greek” that Gary mentions is “Give me a long enough lever and I can move the world.” This is from the great mathematician, engineer, physicist, and philosopher Archimedes, in context the quote is a boast showing off one's understanding of physics. On another note, Archimedes once discovered how to measure the volume of an object and determine its composition by learning about water displacement. Legend says he was taking a bath at the time and cried “Eureka” taking to the streets naked in excitement at the discovery. Facebook Instagram Twitter Official Website Email
Will and James talk about volume 2 of today's manga and address how the satanic panic spread to Pokémon. Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com 117: Pokémon Adventures vol. 2 Chapters 15 to 27, ‘Wartotle Wars' and ‘Kalling Kadabra' Story by Hidenori Kusaka Art by Mato English Translation by Kaori Inoue Lettering and touch up by Wayne Truman The Pokémon trainer Red is witness to his Bulbasaur evolving into an Ivysaur after fighting a Mankey (basically an angry monkey monster). Red encounters the feminine Pokémon trainer Green who tricks him into buying counterfeit items. On their second encounter he manages to get his money back and learns that her Wartotle is the evolved Squirtle that she stole from Proffesor Oak. But Green gets the last laugh because she manages to steal Red's two Gym Leader badges. (That is what Red gets for showing off) Once Red realizes what happened to his badges, he finds out that the Rocket gang is chasing after Green, in response he infiltrates the gang's HQ under a casino (sometimes depicted as a pachinko parlour) there he disguises himself as a member. Red learns of Mew's incomplete clone, the powerful psychic bio-weapon Mewtwo and that Green has a data disk on Mew that Rocket is after. Red helps green fight Rocket and with the help of her Trickster Pokémon, Ditto, who can mimic the appearance of any Pokémon, she manages to defeat Rocket and as a favour to Red, gives back the badges she took. Not long after this we see Red fossil hunting as he cuts through a route with a man named Giovanni, the gym leader of Viridian City. Red does not know that Giovanni is spying on Red. Upon determining that Red is not a threat to him the two then part ways and Giovanni gives Red a Fossil. After numerous adventures including being stranded in the safari zone with no Pokémon and almost drowning before being saved by Misty. Red ends up having to save the Fire Pokémon expert Blaine from the Rocket gang. Blaine is a researcher who worked on cloning Mew for the Rocket gang but has changed face and is now out to stop them. Blaine learns that Red has a fossil and so he sends him on Rapidash back to his lab. There Red figures out how to use Blaine's fossil machine to bring life to an extinct Pokémon. And so Red acquires an Aerodactyl and uses it to save Blaine from the Rocket gang. Causing the gang to retreat. In some way to go anywhere means to go forward and to go far means to return. Red returns to Pallet Town to meet Professor Oak once again, only this time it is an imposter. And no, we will not spoil the identity of the imposter on this podcast. The volume ends with all the Rocket gang members having captured all three legendary bird Pokémon, Koga has the ice bird Articuno, Sabrina has the fire bird Moltress and Lt. Surge has the electric Pokémon Zapdos. The final battle between the Rocket gang and the trainers will take place in Saffron City. In the meantime, a psychic barrier has been put up on Saffron City until then. A Little Context: · Satanic panic of the 80's saw a resurgence with Pokémon, the franchise was accused of teaching kids about the occult according to theists. This is due to many things. One is that Kadabra (Sabina's Pokémon) looking suspiciously like Baphomet, a humanoid goat person, with the star on his head indicating a pentagram). · But some people have used more outlandish excuses to convince others that Pokémon is a way for the Devil to take control of kids, (note that that the prior link is the full video of which only a small fraction was heard on this episode) albeit the argument is more against Capitalism being aimed at children if anything. · kids had seizures whilst watching an episode of the Pokémon anime. This did in fact happen, although not due to some unexplained magic phenomena. The seizures occurred because there was one specific scene in what is considered a “banned episode” of the anime known as “Electric Soldier Porygon” where because of the flashing lights on screen it induced a seizure in those who had photo-sensitive epilepsy. A positive of this episode is that it helped create awareness of the condition with it now being standard practice not to have scenes like this in TV, at least not without disclaimers. · Did the Pope (John Paul II) actually give Pokémon his blessing? According to a new York Times article the response to the first movie coming out had the Vatican denounce the controversy, Sat2000, a satellite TV station run by the Vatican said “The trading-card and computer game is “full of inventive imagination,” The game did not have “any harmful moral side effects” and was based on “ties of intense friendship”. Sat2000 also said the game told simple stories which allowed children “to enter directly into the story” through role-playing adventures. Also, according to Father Jeffrey V. Romans, his blog states that “oftentimes, these fears and crazes come from a lack of knowledge about a subject or a couple of pieces of sensationalized journalism. Don't fall into the devil's trap! Let's all endeavor to take a close look at these types of subjects before forming a fiery, ironclad opinion”.
The Bulbasaur bonanza continues as we move onto it's angsty older sibling, Ivysaur! Callie is of course back once again to lend us her expertise in this exciting field as we explore just what makes everyone's favorite floral frog tick (hint: it's sunlight). Follow along with the entries below: Red and Blue: When the bulb on its back grows large, it appears to lose the ability to stand on its hind legs. Yellow: The bulb on its back grows by drawing energy. It gives off an aroma when it is ready to bloom. Gold: Exposure to sunlight adds to its strength. Sunlight also makes the bud on its back grow larger. Silver: If the bud on its back starts to smell sweet, it is evidence that the large flower will soon bloom. Crystal: The bulb on its back grows as it absorbs nutrients. The bulb gives off a pleasant aroma when it blooms. Ruby & Sapphire: There is a bud on this Pokémon's back. To support its weight, Ivysaur's legs and trunk grow thick and strong. If it starts spending more time lying in the sunlight, it's a sign that the bud will bloom into a large flower soon. FireRed: There is a plant bulb on its back. When it absorbs nutrients, the bulb is said to blossom into a large flower. Emerald: To support its bulb, IVYSAUR's legs grow sturdy. If it spends more time lying in the sunlight, the bud will soon bloom into a large flower. Diamond Pearl & Platinum: When the bud on its back starts swelling, a sweet aroma wafts to indicate the flower's coming bloom. BTB: It's a chonky champion with a big ol' bud that grows like buds do. Is Pokemon dangerous? Potentially, yes it is. It conditions the child who plays the game into accepting occult and evolutionary principles. Haunter can hypnotize, eat a person's dreams, and drain their energy. Abra reads minds. Kadabra emits negative energy that harms others. Gastly induces sleep. Gengar laughs at peoples' fright. Nidoran uses poison. The Psychic-type of Pokemon is among the strongest in the game. Charmander, Haunter, Ivysaur, Kadabra, and many more evolve. The children are taught to use these creatures to do their will by invoking colored energy cards, fights, and commands. Much of it is reminiscent of the occult and eastern mysticism.Full Article here.... https://diggingdeeper.net/2021/12/10/those-little-pocket-monsters/
Talking about Bulbasaur and its evolved forms. Episodes included are: S1E10-Bulbasaur and the hidden village and S1E48- Bulbasaur's mysterious garden! Artwork by: TeePublic.
The starter that lived in it's peers' shadows until uglier starters hit the scene. **cough cough Chikorita** Bulbasaur is a super interesting, versatile, viable Grass/Poison starter and Sara and Peter want the world to know. Dave still thinks he's lame.

Topic: Pokemon Review Mom returns with tales of her journey in the world of pokemon. She have thoughts, Ideas, and our discussion was actually very interesting in the respects of Video Game ideas and philosophy of those that make the game, and where they come from. It's actually pretty interesting, as we've been doing this for over 70 weeks now, mom is getting quite comfortable and skilled at trying to understand the culture of the people who created the game, which is awesome. Plus our usual divergence in to Animal Crossing as well. Homework Review Spinoff Pokemon Games Pokemon Stadium Series Console: Nintendo 64 Developed by Nintendo as a response to the popularity of the Pokemon Games, these were the only way to see the Pokemon on the Big Screen. The game was bundled with the Nintendo 64 Transfer Pak, an add-on for the N64 so that you could transfer your Pokemon from the gameboy games to the N64 and use them in the game. The original intent was for tournaments, so that those watching had something to watch and see during the event, instead of the blocky, pixilated version of the game. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Series Console: Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Switch Based on Mystery Dungeon Mechanics (When Dungeons or Zones are randomly Generated), this game found you the player transforming in to a Pokemon, based off a personality test, and visiting various dungeons to complete the game. Along the way, you can collect other pokemon to follow you and assist in the dungeons. Unlike other Pokemon games, the battles are simple, as you navigate through the dungeon and happen upon other enemy pokemon. Several games have come out over the years, with more light hearted affair and pokemon talking to each other. There also tends to be a lack of any humans around, so pokemon appear in a more natural setting, with many civilized trappings. Pokemon Ranger Series Console: Nintendo DS Attempting to take advantage of the Nintendo DS’s bottom Touch Screen, this version of the game sees you capturing pokemon for a short period of time and using them on missions. The big change is that instead of the RPG mechanics of the main game, you use the stylus to draw circles around pokemon in order to capture it temporarily. Pokemon captured temporarily can then be used to assist with your mission or help with capturing pokemon. An example is a water pokemon may slow or immobilize the enemy pokemon you’re trying to capture with the stylus. Pokemon Rumble Series Console: Nintendo 3DS, Wii U Like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, you travel through various procedurally generated dungeons and fight other pokemon. The main difference being the real-time melee mechanics, which act out in real time, meaning you have to run up to attack them, but also dodge their attacks too. Pokemon Snap Console: Nintendo 64, Wii / Wii U Virtual Console A less beloved, but still cult popular, game in the Pokemon Series. This one is an on-rail (Meaning you follow a set path as laid out by the game) sees you going through various areas and taking pictures of pokemon. The goal is to take pictures of Pokemon, with points awarded for the quality of the picture taken; this can be due to multiple pokemon, different pokemon in same picture, rare or evolved pokemon, or the actions the pokemon are doing in the picture. The pokemon are all in their natural environment, but with Pokemon Bait launched in certain parts of the area, you can trigger events to get more pokemon to show up, different pokemon to appear, or trigger a short event that makes for a better picture. Pokemon Puzzle Games Console: Gameboy Color, Nintendo 64, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch These are various games based off puzzle mechanics. Usually, these are re-skins (Reusing other games mechanics, worlds, models, etc, from games in order make new material) of other existing game series. Puzzle Challenge & Puzzle League – Reskin of Panel de Pon / Puzzle League Pokemon Shuffle – Reskin of Puzzle & Dragon / Bejeweled Mechanics Pokemon Café Mix – Reskin of Disney’s Tsum Tsum Mechanics Hey You, Pikachu Console: Nintendo 64 A unique game where you follow your Pikachu around and talk to it. Utilizing the N64 Voice Recognition Unit, an add-on included with the game, you can talk to Pikachu and direct it around to do stuff for you. Talking to Pikachu directly allows you to build trust and score, which can unlock additional skills for Pikachu. It’s unique in that its Add-on is only used for the one game, and also doesn’t work well with adult and teenager voices. While the gameplay is simple, it was launched right in the middle of the initial pokemon craze to take advantage of it. Super Smash Bros Console: Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii / Wii U, Switch While not a Pokemon game in of itself, pokemon have been represented in every Smash Bros game, and often favorite. Initial Super Smash Bros saw series mascot Pikachu to the roster from day one, and is often a favorite amongst other player, along with Jigglypuff as an unlock. Later series would add additional pokemon, including Pichu, Mewtwo, Charizard, Lucario, Greninja, & Incineroar. In Super Smash Bros Braw, we saw the introduction of the Pokemon Trainer, which could switch out between Charizard, Ivysaur, and Squirtle to allow varied gameplay in one character. Outside of the various stages in the game being pokemon themed, there are also Pokeballs, which contain any number of pokemon that can be summoned on to the stage and aid the thrower by causing damage, debuffs, or chaos during the match. Pokemon Anime Largely credited for opening up the Western Audience to Anime, Pokemon has been a staple of TV for the last 23 years. Pokemon’s Cartoon/Anime follows the adventures of Ash Ketchum(As in Catch them All, the series’s tag line), also simply known as Satoshi in Japanese, as he ventures around the world to become a Pokemon Master. The show follows the basic plot of the games, with side stories and adventures to flesh out the world and character, intended to be the common adventure of a Pokemon Trainer and his friends. The show’s art style has largely unchanged from 1997 till 2016, when the Anime had a change in art style. There have been a few spin off series that are Pokemon Anime, but don’t follow the events of Ash. Pokemon Chronicles – Following trainers for the Johto League, similar to the Gold and Silver character designs. The game follows their exploits, but takes place in the same world and time around Ash and his journeys. Pokemon Origins – A more faithful retelling of the Pokemon Red and Blue series of games. It was a mini-series released just before X & Y’s release. While initially limited to Japan, they were eventually released on to the Pokemon Youtube Channel for free. Pokemon Generations – A pokemon series initially released on Pokemon’s Youtube Channel. The series follows the first six generations of pokemon and Largely focus on side stories of various pokemon character that have been seen through the games, including trainers, Gym Leaders, and other random characters. Pokemon Twilight Wings – A mini-series released on to Youtube, the series follows events of Sword and Shield, and only finished production in August due to Covid-19 delaying the production of the final episode. Like any long running series, Pokemon has had some episodes removed or heavily edited due to Controversies regarding the material or elements of them. “Cyber Soldier Porygon” – Likely the most famous example came early in Pokemon’s broadcast. The episode featured Ash and Pikachu being digitized and entering a computer to aid Porygon, a digital Pokemon. During the episode, Pikachu’s Thunderbolt Attack causes a mix of Blue and Red flashing effects in rapid succession, causing a strobe effect for roughly 5-7 seconds. This resulted in some viewers experiencing Blurred Vision, headaches, dizziness, and nausea, with some viewers experiencing Blindness, Seizures, convulsions, and losing consciousness. While 685 viewers were reported to have been hospitalized, it’s presumed that over 12000 child may have been affected by the episode. After the episode, Pokemon took a 4 month Hiatus. After the Hiatus, other episodes were edited to remove strobe effects, along with the Opening sequence being edited and changed. The episode has never been seen outside of the original broadcast and was removed by Nintendo. In the west, the episode was mocked and used as satire for Japanese Anime in other western animation, particular Simpsons and South Park. Jynx – Jynx is an ice-pokemon, but upon release in America, it was criticized for promotion of Black Face. While the notion of Black Face was Foreign to Japan, who doesn’t have a large foreign population in Japan (only 3-4% of the population in Japan is Non-Japanese), Jynx was later changed to have a Purple colored Face instead. This was what led to the exclusion of the episode “The Ice Cave!” which heavily included Jynx before the edit. Several Episodes have been removed due to illusions to Earthquakes or Destruction, namely episodes in Japan, as the episodes original Airing date was halted due to Earthquakes or Tsunami’s in Japan. Similarly in the West, two episodes were pulled temporarily pulled after the 9/11 Attacks during the initial broadcast: one featured the destruction of a city and another due to the title “The Tower of Terror”. Both episodes were eventually rebroadcast. Some Episodes were only skipped in America. This included “Beauty and the Beach” where the characters participate in a Swimsuit competition, but features James of team Rocket sporting inflatable breasts. The Episode was initially skipped due to the previous content and concerns over over-sexualization, but later re-edited and rebroadcast as a ‘Lost Episode’. Another episode, “The Legend of Dartini” would have seen Ash and company looking for the rare Dartini Pokemon and visiting the Safari Zone, however was skipped due to the frequent use and appearance firearms in the anime. The episode leads to an error in the show, where Ash had captured 30 Tauros Pokemon, which see use later in the series. Much like other long running Anime Series, Pokemon has movies, 24 theatrical released movies over the last 23 years. Pokemon itself in Japan releases a Movie every year, which often tells side stories for Ash and company which don’t get referenced or reflected in the mainline anime. It’s also amongst the only times in which major Legendary Pokemon get seen, as they are rarely referenced or seen in the main Anime. A handful of the POkemon Movies saw a release in the West, namely during the first and second generation, with later movies not seeing a Domestic Box Office release, but released to Video Instead. While Japan has had one new Pokemon movie every year, the west released Detective Pikachu, which is amongst the highest grossing films in 2019 and second highest grossing videogame film of all time.

Hello there! Welcome to Professor Jacob's second lesson on Pokémon biology. Today, we take a look at Ivysaur, the “seed” Pokémon. In our discussion, we learn that a pleasant aroma from Ivysaur's bud may lead to something big. We also learn that maybe Prof. Jacob didn't make the best choice in teaching assistants. Oh well! Too late now. Don't forget to turn in your homework at the beginning of class!
Our focus for this episode is to discuss what makes the Gen 1 Pokemon starters great. Each of us has chosen 1 starter (Squirtle, Charmander, Bulbasaur), and each of us has to convince the others why ours is the best.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/evolvingfishcrabs)
The greatest Pokemon cry of all-time. Meelz, Pat, and Jeff are back together this time, and they've trekked through Mt. Moon and over to the Cerulean City Gym. They trio talk about the tough battle against Misty (unless you had Ivysaur) and Ash's gym battle against his traveling partner Misty. Also, Brock's stuff.

Collin and Brandon definitively prove, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that their idea to dedicate an entire episode to Ivysaur is good and genius. They give the angsty flower-dog a Myers-Briggs test, try to figure out why he's in such a bad mood, and give many, MANY valid reasons why Ivysaur is totally different from Bublasaur.

Someone’s PC: A Pokémon Podcast reviews Ivysaur! What a guy!
Hello PUCLonians! Welcome to a very special edition of Anything Goes. This week I will be chronicling my adventures at PUCLcon and Pokemon Nationals! I am writing this as I go, so I can say that this has been an extremely exciting PUCLcon thus far.WednesdayMy journey started out pretty uneventfully, driving across the state and arriving at Scron's house. He and his family were gracious enough to host me for an evening so I didn't have to drive for like 12 hours in one day. On the trip, I listened to what else but PUCL. I started out by listening to Episode 189, which was last year's PUCLcon episode. This was a great way to get me fired up for the weekend. I followed this up with Episode 183, which was also an atypical episode, as it was a Freeform Show where Thatch, Misty, Beorn, Whimsicott, and Shamu discussed things that annoyed them, as well as many other things. These two can be found here. The tail end of this trip was finished up by listening to a bonus episode which was Broadcasters for a Cure Live show, found between Episodes 177 and 178. I would recommend listening to any of these episodes, even if you have done so already. When I arrived at Scron's house, I was pleasantly surprised to find Scron, Bocefus, Viger, and Mr. Sniffles at Scron's house, playing Pathfinder with some of their friends. It was my first time meeting other PUCL peeps in person. Very relaxed as they finished up their game and I tried to breed Pokemon for the weekend. Shortly after this, Bocefus and Mr. Sniffles went home and Viger and I went to sleep for the night.L to R: Viger, Snag, BocefusMr. SnifflesScron ThursdayBriefly after I woke up, I was sent a link from fellow writer, Locke, to the new Japanese trailer displaying the new Pokemon. Very cool to see these new pokes, even if it was in Japanese.Shortly after this, we got on the road, picked up Bocefus and Mr. Sniffles for an 8 hour drive to Columbus. There were a lot of Pokemon things going on during the ride! Viger, Bo, and Mr. Sniffles were sporadically playing their games throughout the trip. We also listened to the first episode of PUCL, which was roughly 10 minutes long, 2.5 of which were a musical intro. Classic PUCL! The part that was probably the most fun was when we played Pokemon 15 questions with a few modified rules. Every time we did this, we successfully found the Pokemon on each attempt! The Snaggin Wagon on the way to PUCLconWe made it to Columbus and I got checked into my hotel before we went over to Thatch's house. It was at this time that many people were arriving. Dr. Shamu arrived only moments before our group did. Gator was already with Thatch at this time. My 4 traveling companions were all staying with Thatch, but Viger had left a few things in my van so we went out there to get them. There was a black car parked in front of Thatch's house and I thought, “Oh, someone else must be showing up. There are many people coming right now.” And then a female stepped out of the car who looked extremely familiar to me. I asked Viger, “Is that Whimsicott!?” And at that point, we rushed up hugged her and freaked out a little bit! Viger then quickly and calmly grabbed his camera so he could record everyone else's reaction. It was fantastic to see the surprise on everyone's face. Thatch's first reaction is not appropriate for this article, but it was amazing! And shortly after that, another writer, Sublime Manic, arrived and he was completely over shadowed by Whimsicott! She arrived without telling anyone from PUCL and proved that she was truly the Prankster Whimsicott!Whimsicott even gets her own banner!Italian Flipflops! After this, we went to dinner at a really cool Asian chain that Thatch suggested we go to. Apparently, American's eat fast because we were all done eating while Whimsicott was still finishing her food and we almost left her behind. Also, we must have been a bit loud as the restaurant staff had asked us to quiet down a bit. After eating dinner, I made my way back to the hotel, where Whimsicott and Sublime were also staying. We also collected other PUCLonians, such Ten Little Men (TLM), his friend, Woddy, and R Sigma. At first, TLM didn't realize that the girl who was coming along with us Whimsicott until we started talking about how far we all had to travel. He had thought that he and Woody had traveled pretty far being from Canada, but Whimsicott pointed out that she came further. TLM asked, “Where did you come from?” and Whimsicott said, “…Italy…” and then TLM's mouth dropped and exclaimed, “You came!?” This was at least 5 minutes after we had introduced ourselves. It was another great surprise! After this, we went to Thatch's house, again. Some people prepared for tournaments that were occurring on the following day, but many of us played Smash Brother and tested out the streaming set up. Around 11 pm or midnight, we wrapped things up so people could get some rest for the first day at the convention center.FridayMy roommate, R. Sigma had to leave early to compete in the National tournament. Just for participating, he got some sweet swag pictured below. For participating in the tournament, the players got a play mat, deck box, deck sleeves, a promo card, lanyard, and Vicitini pin.Around 9 am, the rest of Team Hotel (myself, Whimsicott, TLM, Sublime, and Woody) met the rest of the group at Thatch's. We got to meet Mr. Maximus who arrived early in the morning. Before we left for the convention center, I ran to Toys R Us to get the Shamin Anniversary Plush, but there was no Shaymin. TLM cam with and got a repeat ball w/ Pikachu and Woody got a Yoshi figure, as well.We then made our way over to the convention center. The first thing we saw was a Pokemon Center store set up at the convention center. They had most of the things you would expect to see at a Pokemon Center store, but it was all on hand. Many members of our group bought a bunch of things. Woody even spent a bunch of money on a large art print of May and some of her Pokemon. The print that Woody purchased. Pretty sweet, even if it's over priced. Before we entered the main center where the even was being held, we found Jushiro and surprised him with Whimsicott and then we all got pictures with Pikachu. As we were making our way to the hall, there was a sign for the event shiny Machamp which was on the team of the Champion of the Senior's division last year. The entire PUCL crew literally stopped and went, Oh, Shiny! Most of the PUCL crew with Pikachu. Even though most of us don't get into the Pikachu hype, when else would we get the chance to have a picture with a giant Pikachu!?Friday was PUCL cosplay day. L to R: Snag as Prof. Birch, Ten Little Men as Emerald, Mr. Sniffles as a Scientist, Bocefus as a Bug Catcher, and Viger as an Original Character. After checking things out a little bit, we met up with Minor-Manectric and his wife, now deemed Mega-Manectric (or Major-Manectric) just before heading to lunch. After lunch, it was time to get down for business. I prepared for a classic RBY tournament using the Virtual Console games. I got schooled, 0-3, but it was still fun to see a few other people who really wanted to play the classic games. Other people played Battle Spot singles in 8 man pods. Not only that but PUCL took over an 8-man pod for a TCG prerelease tournament. Thatch ended up winning this, but Shamu had a great showing using the Tyranitar card that Sublime trashed in Ep. 7 of the TCGcast.Once things were winding down for the day, we all went back to Thatch's, ordered pizza had chips and a variety of drinks. To everyone's surprise, Whimsicott actually liked American pizza, even though she won't admit it!As dinner was ending, I went to my van and brought in the present that PUCL had for Thatch & Misty's Wedding. Big shout out to Basket, who draws comics for the site, and Dr. Shamu for their artistic contributions to the project (Basket drew it, and Shamu added the coloring). Also, the person who framed the picture, Adam, you're the best! They were surprised and were so grateful that our community came together to give this to them. The newlyweds holding their PUCL gift!Feraligatr and Lucario against the world! After that, we went to streaming on Twitch. We started with a little bit Smash, and a few people wanted to do TCG unboxings. The highlight of the night was our 12-man OU tournament. Spontaneously, Jushiro and I started doing commentary for Round 1. It was so much fun! But we saw Gliscor on so many teams!!! It is under a suspect test for being banned next year for sure. In the first round, Shamu beat Mr. Sniffles, Gator lost to Bocefus, Maximus overcame Thatch, Whimsicott handily defeated Woody (who was using a stellar team of pokes (they were mine)), Minor-Manectric defeated Viger, and Ten Little Men narrowly edged out R. Sigma. After those 6 matches, it was after midnight so we decided to save the rest of the tourney for the next day.PUCLcon OU TournamentSaturdayBefore we left in the morning, there was apparently a major shorts issues at Casa de Thatch, because Thatch was missing some shorts for a while, found them, but then Viger was missing shorts. I think that all go resolved though…There were a few people who had left early with Misty because there was some events they wanted to try, then a group left in what was deemed to be the Snaggin Wagon, and the Thatchmobile followed a little bit later. We were lucky enough to snag a couple of tables for our group to sit at, which is a bit of a luxury, at times.Woody and Maximus got signed up for a little cup tournament, but the set up was a bit disappointing. Several players were using banned Pokemon such as Scyther, Sneasal, and others, and the judge apparently didn't clearly know the rules, so it was a bit of a joke.We spent the day doing a variety of things. Some people drew pictures of Pokemon cards, others prepared for afternoon tournies. Mr. Sniffles participated in what was supposed to be a Red, White or Blue Monochoromatic Tournament, but most of the players didn't understand the rules and used Red, White and Blue. Despite this, he did fairly well and went 3-1 and was only one of a few people who really played by the designated rules. We also had the opportunity to meet up with Mickey from Pokemon Crossroads, who has been on the podcast before, as well as folks from the Kanto Cast, before we left for lunch.Thatch's Flying Meganium. The whole PUCLcon crew! After lunch, we took over another 8-man pod for Battle Spot Singles, where ultimately, Whimsicott beat Thatch in the finals! We also took over 8-man pods for 2 more pre-release draft tournaments for the TCG. Sublime won one of these, and Bocefus won the other. We then watched a few competitors playing Pokken for the main Tournament.Snag meet up with other Professors since he decided to just wear his lab coat all weekend. Because lab coats are cool!L to R: Ash, Prof. Elm, Prof. Juniper, Prof. Birch, and Prof. Snag.We then made our way back to the area where Thatch lives and got dinner, and then recorded the podcast. If you haven't taken the time to listen to episode 241 yet, you definitely want to do so. It was one of the highlights of the weekend, especially being able to give Jushiro a 3ds considering he has lost his earlier in the year.Thatch himself recording the episode!Snag and Jushiro modeling their awesome Pokeball robes. After recording the episode, a few people began to prepare for the final day at the convention, especially for the Triathalon, where competitors play VCG, TCG, and Pokken against each other. They worked on building decks and honing their Pokken skills. They were doing that in the living room while others finished the OU tournament, with commentary from Sublime and me.Snag and Sublime doing commentary on the final rounds of the PUCLcon OU tournament. In round 2, Whimsicott narrowly beat Maximus, in a battle of Gym Leaders, TLM handily beat Minor-Manectric, and Shamu took down Bo. With our 3 competitors, we advanced TLM directly to the finals due to him winning his matches with more Pokemon left than Shamu or Whimsicott. The reign of the mighty Whimsicott, who claims to be a “filthy casual”, came to an end when she battled Shamu. In the final, TLM beat Shamu in a great match and became the PUCLcon 2016 OU Champion.SundayNow, my recollection of what happened on Sunday is a little foggy as we stayed up really late Sunday/Monday and I didn't record my notes until Tuesday morning…Today was a little bit of a later start, but no one was bothered by that. There was nothing anyone was really trying to get to. When we got to the convention center, I stopped and got a few classic Pokemon things that I thought belonged in my collection including dogtags with Abra and Kadabra and Squirtle and Ivysaur figurines with Masterballs.Alaka-swag given to me by various people at PUCLcon. Thanks everyone, especially Viger!A few people played in some Little Cup tournaments. A few people were in various Triathalon tournaments. Most notably, Jushiro, Misty, and Scron were all in one group with one other person. There were a few gym battles happening, as well, including a 40 minute battle I had with Minor-Manectric that I lost due to a flinch near the end of the battle. (*sigh* See you on Saturday!) Over all, it was a really mellow day. I think we were all really tired and the event in general was really sparse compared to Saturday. We weren't even all that interested in the Finals of any of the main tournaments. Late in the afternoon, we made our way back to Thatch's house, but not before losing 2 of our members, Gator and R. Sigma as they had to make their way back home.Bo made it on the Official Pokemon Twitter! Catch those bugs! Before getting Thatch's, though, we bought some t-shirts to screen print some exclusive PUCLcon shirts (just in coloring, there weren't any printed with PUCLcon on it or anything). There were a few people who also wanted to go to Walmart and get some booster packs. I felt like such an enabler… I know how bad a TCG addiction can be and I encouraged others to feed that addiction. Woody, TLM, and the Manectrics ended up buying some TCG packs and Whimsicott bought a Leafeon and Vaporeon plush.PUCLcon 2016: Back row L to R:Whimsicott, Ten Little Men, Mega-Manectric, Sublime, Viger, Thatch, Dr. Shamu, Minor-Manectric, Snag, Jushiro; Front row L to R: Woody, Mr. Maximus, Bocefus, Scron, Mr. Sniffles; Not Pictured: Gator, R. Sigma, MistyFor the rest of the night, we kind of put Pokemon on hold and just enjoyed each other's company. Some of us played Cards Against Humanity while others worked on screen printing shirts. Thatch really enjoyed printing the shirts as that allowed him the time to just talk with people for a while. We did this into the wee hours of he morning as I think we all wanted to squeeze every last moment out of this time together. Ultimately, Team Hotel had to go back to the hotel and we had to say good byes to several people, including the Manectrics. Shortly after this, at the hotel, it was at this time I had to say good bye to Whimsicott, TLM, and Woody as I would be leaving in only a few hours later.MondayI left my hotel with Sublime around 7 am, as he had to go to Thatch's to be driven to the airport. At this time, we said another round of goodbyes to Shamu, Maximus, Jushiro, Sublime, and Thatchs (and probably others). Most people were making their way home on this day.As we drove, I tried to rest as best as I could. It was a quiet ride as many of us were exhausted and used this time as a bit of a Pokemon detox. Before I knew it, we were back in the home town of my driving mates. We dropped off Viger, then Scron, and finally Bocefus and Mr. Sniffles. And then I was by myself. I had a 4 hour drive to think on the weekend and start to miss the great friends that I had only known from afar but had the wonderful privilege of being in their presence for a few short days. Thatch said it best by mentioning before this, we were online friends, but now we're friends who keep up online. When I got home, I was welcome by my wife and kids who hadn't seem me for 5 days. I was so excited to share the memories I brought home with them as we watched the Independence day fireworks. I must have left a good impression because Mrs. Snag is talking about going to PUCLcon next year!As I am writing this article people are still finding their way home from PUCLcon. I think TLM and Woody are still on their way to Canada and Whimsicott just boarded her flight off of this continent. There was something magical and amazing about this weekend. PUCLcon 2016 was a true testament of what the PUCL community is: warm, welcoming, fun, family. I am proud to be friends with these people and and I am proud to be part of this awesome community. Thank you for reading and thank you for being part of PUCL. We love you!Great Ball signed by all who attended PUCLcon 2016. We had the entire council, except Ethan. Hosted on Acast.
