In this episode of the Educated Food Podcast, hosts Dr. J and Jarell discuss the recent legal troubles surrounding Diddy, including serious allegations of abuse and misconduct. They explore the implications of power dynamics in these situations, the impact on victims, and the importance of accountability within the community. The conversation also touches on the role of family in perpetuating cycles of abuse and the difficult conversation of separating art from the artist in light of Diddy's contributions to music and culture. 00:00 Introduction and Weekly Updates 05:31 Diddy's Legal Troubles 11:10 The Nature of Power and Consent 18:01 Impact on Victims and Community 24:57 Accountability and Family Dynamics 34:01 Art vs. Artist: Navigating Diddy's Catalog

ABOUT THE EPISODE:When Dr. Jarrell Myers took his first job out of grad school, he loved working with children suffering from anxiety disorders, as well as their families. It was a calling he'd already been pursuing for years. But there was a big problem: many kids who needed needed help for their anxiety couldn't become patients in his program because they were using substances. While this made some clinical sense (for reasons Jarell will explain), it also failed to acknowledge that substance use was woven into their anxiety, often as a coping mechanism. This is what finally led him to the Center for Motivational Change (CMC).CMC publishes the book I recommend more than any other to parents of kids struggling with substances – Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change. Today I finally have a chance to speak with Dr. Myers about some of the core principles it contains. In this episode, we discuss the nature of anxiety, why it makes sense that anxious kids to turn to substances, how parenting those kids may trigger our own fear and anxiety responses, and how to give our families the best fighting chance in the face of these realities.EPISODE RESOURCES:Center for Motivation and ChangeBeyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People ChangeBeyond Addiction Workbook for Friends and FamilyThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsLearn about The Woods, our private online community for dadsFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Dr. Josh King welcomes you to another episode and a new season of The Beyond Addiction Show. The pandemic has certainly brought anxiety in different shapes and forms to many (if not to most) of us. Anxiety can be the force that drives and motivates as but it can also work against us by shutting us down and keeping us from engaging in our lives. Today, Dr. King is accompanied by Dr. Jarell Myers and Dr. Julie Jarvis to talk about how we can engage in our own lives even with anxiety and fear present. They break down what exposure therapy is, providing tools for us to be able to create our own exposure to help us cope with our fears and anxiety and to really live our fullest lives. Key Takeaways: [3:18] What is and isn't OCD? How can you tell if the behavior is compulsive? [7:50] OCD is fear-based. [8:52] When can something be considered a normal feeling or a problematic one? [10:48] What happens when the person is totally OK with his or her symptoms but everyone around can't take them anymore? [12:21] Dr. Jarvis talks about exposure therapy. [13:39] Dr. Myers shares what drew him to work with patients suffering from anxiety. [16:40] Dr. Myers talks about the fun part of being a therapist dedicated to helping patients struggling with anxiety. [18:46] Dr. Jarvis explains what exposure and response prevention really is. [22:45] Exposure therapy is not about throwing the patient into the deep end; the patient needs to be guided through a process where he or she is able to build up a tolerance. [25:36] Dr. Jarvis speaks about how some patients come up with their own ways of exposure and also how the therapist plays a key role in helping the patient go through the process successfully. [29:31] Therapists who have been treating anxiety might be aware of things that you have not noticed. [30:55] Dr. King shares statistics about how the pandemic has caused a significant increase in substance use. [31:30] How can exposure therapy be used to improve people's lives in times of pandemics? [35:16] What are the things that you wish you could get back to? [37:25] Dr. Jarvis talks about the relationship between anxiety and certainty. [41:21] Facing your anxiety is a way of enhancing your life. [42:26] It feels great to do the things you are afraid of; it's worth the short-term pain. This is the third installment of a highly informative interview.Following a near-fatal car accident at age 17, pastor's son Jarrell Flowers got serious with Jesus. That set him on a path toward fruitfulness in the commercial music world as well as in ministry. He's involved in live concerts, music production and community engagement. His songs are featured in both mainstream and Christian markets. Jarrell aspires to make music that brings people together in a unique blend of hip hop, pop and rock music. He pioneered the Freedom Music Group as an indie network building artistic communities that make disciples of Jesus who intend to change the world. After a dark bout of depression, Jarrell put the word out through social media asking musicians and other artists if they felt isolated and in need of spiritual support. The response was immediately overwhelming. Over time a movement was born. Rise microchurch communities emerged from the mix. An interesting aspect of this interview is Jarrell's interest in whatever parallels might be found between the Jesus Movement of the 1970s and the renewed awareness of social and community needs facing younger people today. Rise communities are highly missional. One group of musicians has made it their job to provide an interface between a local police department and people living in the neighborhood. I came away impressed that this is not a movement of friends self-congratulating about their mutual interests. These people are out to bring Jesus into a broken world.
