In 2011, Cantor Gaming stormed into Las Vegas with the swagger of Wall Street, led by Howard Lutnick at the helm of the parent company Cantor Fitzgerald and Lee Amaitis running the Nevada operation. Known for pioneering mobile sports wagering and accepting unprecedented high-limit bets—sometimes as large as $500,000—Cantor positioned itself as the cutting edge of sports gaming. To many, it looked like a revolution: bettors flocked to its books at the M Resort and beyond, drawn by the promise of action other operators wouldn't touch. But behind the gloss of innovation, Cantor became entangled in one of the largest illegal betting scandals in modern history. The so-called “Jersey Boys,” an East Coast ring with deep ties to organized bookmaking, infiltrated the operation through Cantor executive Michael Colbert. With Colbert as their insider, the crew laundered millions through Cantor's system, exploiting the company's appetite for volume and its disregard for traditional risk limits. The scheme collapsed in 2012 when Colbert and more than two dozen associates were arrested in a sweeping FBI crackdown. Nevada regulators soon levied one of the largest fines in state history—$5.5 million—citing Cantor's lack of oversight. Amaitis stepped down in 2016, his reputation scarred, while the Cantor brand itself was rebranded as CG Technology in a failed attempt to shed its baggage. By 2020, the company was sold to William Hill, its ambitions of dominating Las Vegas reduced to a cautionary tale. The Jersey Boys scandal not only crippled Cantor but reshaped the entire sports gaming industry, ushering in stricter compliance, tighter wagering oversight, and a lasting reminder that unchecked ambition and Wall Street arrogance could topple even the flashiest of innovators.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

I chat with Dr. Kristin Stultz Pressley, a Broadway historian and lecturer and the co-host of the Dr. Broadway Podcast. We talk about her new book - Jukebox Musicals: Crazy for You to MJ the Musical (Essential Musicals). The book explores a style of show that's dominated Broadway for the better part of two decades. Through a chronological look at the development of long-running hits, like Mamma Mia! and Jersey Boys, this book traces the Jukebox Musical from when it was an exception on Broadway to when it became the rule. Dr. Pressley was a previous guest on the podcast, when we discussed her first book, I Can't Give You Anything but Love, Baby: Dorothy Fields and Her Life in the American Musical Theater, which was published in 2021.

In this two-part episode of On The Aisle Podcast, host Tom Alvarez sits down with two stars of the stage production of Pretty Woman: The Musical at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. The conversations offer an inside look at life in professional theater—from national tours and auditions to the realities of building a career on stage.Part 1: Dani Kucera – From Cheerleader to Leading LadyActor Dani Kucera joins the podcast from backstage during rehearsals to talk about stepping into the lead role of Vivian in Pretty Woman: The Musical. Originally from Pennsylvania and now based in New York City, Kucera shares how her love of theater began unexpectedly after years as a cheerleader before discovering the stage in middle school. She went on to earn a BFA in musical theater from Belmont University, where the program's strong focus on music training and industry connections helped prepare her for professional work.Kucera reflects on life after graduation, including touring more than 50 cities with the national tour of Pretty Woman. The experience, she says, created lifelong friendships and offered a crash course in the realities of performing on the road. Now back at Beef & Boards—where she previously appeared in Legally Blonde: The Musical—she's excited to once again perform for Indianapolis audiences in the romantic musical inspired by the hit film Pretty Woman. She also shares advice for aspiring performers: talent and hard work matter, but kindness and strong relationships are just as important in the theater world. For Kucera, living in New York and performing across the country feels like the fulfillment of a dream she first discovered as a teenager.Part 2: Charlie Fusari – From Ensemble to Leading ManIn the second half of the episode, Alvarez speaks with Charlie Fusari, who plays billionaire Edward Lewis in the production. Fusari discusses his journey from growing up in New Jersey to landing major stage roles, including performing in Jersey Boys and touring nationally with Pretty Woman: The Musical before stepping into the lead role at Beef & Boards.Unlike many performers, Fusari didn't initially plan a theater career. While attending Sacred Heart University, he discovered the stage through a friend involved in a campus production—and quickly caught the “theater bug.” Since then, he's built a steady career touring the country, performing in historic theaters, and developing his craft through training and auditions in New York.Fusari also talks about the unique experience of dinner theater, the challenge of making a famous role his own (originally played on film by Richard Gere), and how the show's pop-rock score by Bryan Adams brings a fresh energy to the beloved story.Behind the CurtainAcross both conversations, listeners get a behind-the-scenes look at the dedication, travel, and constant training required to succeed in musical theater. From auditions and touring life to the thrill of performing live, Kucera and Fusari reveal the passion that drives actors to pursue their craft—and why bringing Broadway-caliber productions to regional audiences remains an essential part of American theater.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Harvard Study of Adult Development, often referred to as the Grant Study, is widely recognized as the longest-running, in-depth scientific study of adult life ever conducted. I recently published an episode I did with the director, Robert Waldinger. The results of the study have now famously shown us that what most fulfills us in life is relationships. Of course not just any relationships, but the truly valuable and significant relationships of our lives. It's proven very difficult to have such relationships, if we can't effectively communicate with others. And by effectively communicate, we mean to actually connect in a meaningful way. So in this episode I bring you Renée Marino. Renée is a renowned Broadway star, singing, acting, and dancing in West Side Story, Pretty Woman, and Jersey Boys. Her lead role in Jersey Boys caught the eye of famed actor Clint Eastwood who took her from the stage and cast her for the lead female role in his film, Jersey Boys. Renée's livelihood is communicating. She must connect with and move the audience, and she's a master. Following Clint's film, Renée turned her attention to the professional and personal world and is showing us the heart and skill of real communication. The kind that does just what Renée does on stage, on film, and in her personal life...truly connects us with others in a meaningful way that moves them to engage with us. I connected with Renée so much I had her come back and co-host a bunch of episodes with me, we co-presented at a speaking event together, and became good friends. Renée has culminated her methodology of communicating in her book, Becoming a Master Communicator: Balancing New School Technology with Old School Simplicity, which you can get anywhere and just search for Renée Marino and you'll find her everywhere. This episode spans the full spectrum of the cruise industry, from strategic shutdowns to tragic loss at sea. Alaskan Dream Cruises has officially ceased all operations after a review of long-term objectives, highlighting the brutal economics facing small ship operators squeezed between mega-carriers and luxury expedition brands. With just 223 berths across four US-flagged vessels, the fixed costs proved insurmountable against competitors with far greater scale and marketing power. On Norwegian Bliss, the Broadway musical Jersey Boys will officially end its run in February 2026 as NCL pivots away from expensive licensed productions toward rotating variety acts. The move reflects a fundamental rethinking of onboard entertainment ROI, freeing up crew berths and slashing licensing costs in favor of comedians, magicians, and smaller-cast shows. The episode also covers the tragic passing of legendary jazz clarinetist Ken Peplowski aboard Celebrity Summit during a Jazz Cruises charter sailing, plus key port developments including winter storm disruptions in Norfolk, a pulled dock deal in Haines, Alaska, and new homeporting strategies from Carnival and Holland America targeting drive-to markets.

On this special Christmas Eve edition of The Other Side of Midnight, Lionel welcomes his wife, Lynn Shaw, for a festive yet urgent "Warrior Wednesday". The couple moves from discussing the glitzy New York premiere of Marty Supreme to Lynn's powerhouse background as a Broadway producer of hits like Hairspray and Jersey Boys. However, the holiday cheer is balanced by a deep dive into the "dark and ugly" corners of the digital world, including the rise of "pig butchering" scams, the hidden surveillance risks of AI toys, and the manipulative power of TikTok algorithms. This episode serves as a critical wake-up call for families to reclaim their children's attention from Big Tech and become vigilant warriors in their own homes. Learn more about your ad choices.
