Oftentimes people think [a call to vocation] really needs to be this kind of dramatic, you know, falling on your knees and having this light from heaven, you know, like Saul on the way to Damascus... But I think that the more common way that it happens is that it's an understanding a desire that is within you that that is a holy desire, to be coming from God. -Fr. James Martin, SJ Fr. In our ongoing pursuit of peace at the end of the year, Jen sits down with Father James Martin, one of America's most beloved spiritual leaders and a New York Times bestselling author. Known for his thought-provoking books "The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything" and "Learning to Pray," Jen and Father Martin talk about the premises in Father Martin's new book "Come Forth, the Promise of Jesus's Greatest Miracle," which tells the iconic story of the raising of biblical Lazarus from the dead in a way we guarantee you've never heard before. If you've been in therapy for any time at all, you might have been advised to let go of things that don't serve you, and lo and behold, this ancient story of Jesus calling Lazarus from the tomb has wisdom and inspiration for today, and promises to leave you pondering on what you might leave behind in your own tomb for a new life. * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes “That's one of the reasons I write books to just say to people; being on a path is a human thing and you can read about it if you don't want to talk about it. Other people are going through it and have been through it way before you.” - Father James Martin “The Gospels should be disorienting. God wants to shake us up a little bit. And there's a great line from the Catholic activist and writer Dorothy Day that 'God comforts the afflicted but also afflicts the comfortable,' which I love, and it should be disorienting. It should shake us up. Jesus was pretty disorienting.” - Father James Martin "If you have difficulties with one or another way of interpreting the Gospels, you have to say, look-- Jesus constantly is with the poor. It's not ambiguous. 'Blessed are the poor.' I mean, you can't get any more blunt than that, but it's hard for us because it kind of challenges our status quo." - Father James Martin “Until we can let go of things that prevent us from loving God and getting closer to God, we won't be at peace as much as we could be.” - Father James Martin Resources Mentioned in This Episode The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything by Father James Martin Learning to Pray: A Guide for Everyone by Father James Martin Transgender People Can Be Baptized Catholic Reuters Article  Mary Karr   The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton Jesuits Six Jesuit Martyrs in El Salvador WWJD (Wiki) Augustine of Hippo Come Forth, the Promise of Jesus's Greatest Miracle by Father James Martin Guest's Links Instagram Twitter  Facebook Connect with Jen! This is an episode we released back in February of 2023. There's been a lot in the news around the Pope Firing an Anti-LGBTQ Texas Bishop. So we thought it would be fitting to replay this amazing conversation we had with Father James Martin! Enjoy the show! From Feb/2023:Let's face it, most people in the LGBTQ+ world know exactly how members of the faith community feel about their lifestyle. So when a prominent Priest in the Catholic faith chooses to extend love, not hate, to this marginalized group you would expect that would be met with praise from other believers. Well unfortunately that's not the story you'll hear on this episode, where Pastor Josh and Will speak with Jesuit Priest, Father James Martin. We start off the episode laying down the foundation of what is Catholicism, structural hierarchy and definition of terms. Will (Political Host) ask Father Martin about the letter he received from Pope Francis regarding the criminality of being gay. This letter came after the most recent AP article stating that the "Pope says homosexuality not a crime. . Then the topic shifts to the long running ministry of Father Martin, that involves his journey to make the Catholic Church more accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, despite loud opposition from both inside and outside the Church. We then talk about child abuse within the Catholic Church and finally end talking about the Super Bowl?Guest Bio:Fr. Father James Martin and director Shannon Post talk about their documentary “Building a Bridge” with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks. The documentary named after the book by Father Martin “Building a Bridge” follows a priest on his mission to make the Catholic Church more accepting of our LGBTQ community despite loud opposition from both inside and outside the Church. The film tells the stories of people whose lives intersect in emotional and complicated ways with Father Martin's journey as a voice for acceptance within the Church and the conflict between conservative and liberal Catholics over LGBTQ issues including Pope Francis. One of the highlights of the film is when Father Martin talks about how horrified he was by Catholic leaders' silence in the wake of the Pulse Nightclub Massacre. He addresses this issue with a grieving Pulse mother Christine Leinonen whose son Dru was killed in the massacre. The film also follows Father Martin and the lives he has impacted including a family with three LGBTQ siblings and a college student trying to reconcile his gay and Catholic identities. Shannon co-directed and produced the film with Evan Mascagni a Catholic who was disenchanted by the Church but inspired by Father Martin's message of building a bridge between the Church and our LGBTQ community that also resonated with Shannon as a queer person. The film came to the attention of Martin Scorsese who served as Executive Producer of “Building a Bridge” which premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. We talked to Father James and Shannon about what they hope to accomplish with this film and their spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Father James Martin is a Jesuit priest, editor at large of America magazine, consultor to the Vatican's Dicastery for Communication and the author of many books including the New York Times bestsellers “Jesus: A Pilgrimage”, “The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything” and “Learning to Pray”. If you have ever been so immersed in a book or film that you feel you're part of the story, you are doing something similar to the Gospel contemplations in the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius. As a soldier, Ignatius spent his early life chasing adventure, glory and pleasure. Whilst leading a doomed last stand at the Battle of Pamplona 500 years ago, he was struck by a cannonball that shattered his legs. This began a dramatic spiritual conversion through intense prayer, ascetism and visions. As the founder of the Jesuits, his lessons were published in a book called The Spiritual Exercises which are basis of Ignatian Spirituality. It's one of the world's most influential books of prayer, meditations and contemplations. It emphasises using all your senses to imagine Jesus, hell, and biblical scenes with the goal of discerning God's will for you. Ernie Rae meets three people to discover how it transformed their lives and asks: does it's focus on individual discernment mean 'anything goes'? What's it like conjuring up a visceral image of you at your absolute worst? And how has Ignatian Spirituality shaped the papacy of the first Jesuit Pope, Francis I? Plus, we meet Toy Story co-creator, Pete Docter. He tells us how another goal of Ignatian Spirituality of finding God in all things influenced him and his latest Oscar winning film, Soul. To discuss all this, Ernie is joined by: Father Jim Martin (a Jesuit Priest and author of ‘The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything'), Ruth Holgate (Director of St Beuno's Jesuit Spirituality Centre in North Wales) and Sister Anne Arabome (a member of the Sisters of Social Service in Los Angeles and Associate Director of the Faber Centre for Ignatian Spirituality). In his book, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything , Father James Martin introduces an effective strategy to do this. He suggests his readers to ask one simple question to themselves: "What would my best self do in this situation?" We all have the image of the best versions of ourselves in our heads. We are well aware of all the good habits and behaviors that that version participates in all significant areas of life. And this is why, we can use our ideal self as a compass, as a blueprint if you will, to guide our current actions and choices. The more consistently we act in accordance with our personal legend, the better we feel about ourselves and our life by virtue of our internal alignment. . . .
