Longtime Flopcast listeners (those poor souls) know that every 100 episodes, we celebrate V66, Boston's own music video TV channel of the mid-80s. This time, however, we have a special guest: Eric Green, director of the V66 documentary, Life on the V! And because this is episode 666, we're looking at the heavy metal and hard rock bands and videos of the V66 era. It was a time when catchy melodies and goofy visuals helped acts like Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister score huge Top 40 hits. The Kiss guys lost the makeup, Van Halen switched from Dave to Sammy, Aerosmith made their (rap-assisted) comeback, Mötley Crüe freaked everybody out, and Bon Jovi opened the floodgates for a cacophony of hair metal. Meanwhile on the local scene, V66 promoted a video filmed at a Boston-area high school by an unknown hard rock band called Extreme. And as the New England Patriots prepared for Super Bowl 1986, V66 was there with a couple of low budget quickie music videos, including the goofy metal tune "Skin the Bears." (Spoiler: The Patriots absolutely did not skin the Bears.) Also: Kevin finds V66 VJ David O'Leary at a Taylor Dayne show! Eric traces the history of Nirvana in Boston! Tom Bergeron gets in touch with the kids on Rap Around! And if you're in the Boston area, you can join us for a special screening of Life on the V at the Somerville Theatre on February 27th! Kids, it's the 40th anniversary of V66. You deserve a night out, surrounded by Junior Mint-chomping 80s nerds who know how to neutron dance. Life on the V! Green's Party! And our regular links... Give to help Chris make Truce Robert Welch was a candy magnate who invented the Sugar Daddy and sold favorites like Junior Mints and Milk Duds. He was also very anti-communist. His dubious research led him to found the John Birch Society, a group whose mission was to spread conspiracy theories worldwide. They had major support from wealthy men like Fred Koch, father of the Koch brothers (who financed opposition to Obamacare and climate change legislation). Some of their most notable campaigns were those against Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Earl Warren and President Dwight Eisenhower. They claimed that these men were communist sympathizers working behind the scenes to put the communist agenda. Bogus stuff, but they gained thousands of followers across the country. They also fought the income tax, said that black people would not have wanted equality if the communists hadn't taught them to, and argued that the US is a republic and not a democratic republic. Phyllis Schlafly, RJ Rushdoony, Tim LaHaye, and many others had ties to the birchers. This group had a huge influence on the Religious Right! Not to mention shifting the GOP to accept extremists. Our special guest for this episode is Dr. Matthew Dallek, a political historian at George Washington University. His book is Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right. Sources: Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right by Matthew Dallek Before the Storm by Rick Perlstein Divided We Stand by Marjorie Spruill Helpful Guardian article about the Koch brothers and Americans for Prosperity Christian Reconstruction: RJ Rushdoony and American Religious Conservatism by Michael McVicar NY Times article about J. Howard Pew's connections to Robert Welch Dark Money by Jane Mayer Discussion Questions What is the John Birch Society? Was communism a threat to the country in the mid-1900s? What would have been the proper way to respond to communism? What is the impact of conspiracy theories on American Christianity? There are real conspiracies in the US, like those by Donald Trump and his allies to steal the 2020 election. But a lot of Christians don't believe these real conspiracies. How has an abundance of false conspiracies numbed our ability to recognize reality? Are you surprised Tim LaHaye, Phyllis Schlafly, and RJ Rushdoony were affiliated with the JBS? Send us a textFor Scary Season 2024, we're harkening back to a founding film in the genre of horror. In this era of the 21st Century, fans of horror are rich in the types of film they view to give themselves the creeps --- body horror, slasher films, psychological fear, the supernatural. But a film had to be the forerunner for Hollywood and the rest of the world to understand that the public wanted to be scared for their 25 cents (in 1931, probably now more like $25 --- Junior Mints included). Horror would put people in the seats and pay off. There'd been a few forerunners in the silent era --- German Expressionist films such as The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu (more on that to come). But the genre took off when Universal brought out the first in their classic series of monster films, with Dracula in 1931. In this lies a tale of, not just horror, but real-world crosscurrents in legend, in literature, symbolism, star power, typecasting, and longevity. And Universal taking horror to the bank until 1948.Website and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

We don't have a guest this week, BUT it doesn't mean we have nothing to talk about!Sam and Matt get together to talk! It was a long weekend of adulting, and Sam wanted to bring up something that he realized during his "adulting time!"Before that, the guys talk about the Early Bird Special, supper time, snacks, Life Savers, Junior Mints & pumpkin spice!Sam also brings up an issue with a big box store having Christmas decorations, for sale, in mid-September!That takes the guys to their "topic!" Sam tells about his weekend and the things he did that his younger self would approve of, and Matt clarifies it and says it would make his teenage self consider his weekend a drag! It's a short episode, but it's a fun one! ENJOY!
It's a battle of the minds to start the show, as everyone is arguing about Junior Mints. Jen and Ashton are correct in their take. Chewy also wants to know what the big issue with Nickleback is, because he is anti-all grunge music. Are there too many apps? Jen is sick and tired of the app-ocalypse. Some news is broken, but also not really broken, because Chewy doesn't know which information is correct that he is saying on the air. Adam Schefter returns for his weekly appearances!

Half of the fun of going to the movie theaters is picking out a treat to munch on! The '90s were an exciting time filled with technological advances, nostalgia and the anticipation of a new millennium but the candies we were snacking on were going extreme like Airheads! Friends dared one another to eat ultra-sour Warheads and new candies were still being released like the Nutrageous bar!Grab your box of Nerds and let's go through the decades to learn about the history of our favorite '90s concessions, how Skittles can't seem to stay out of the controversial headlines, and how Seinfeld helped to boost the sales of candies like Jujyfruits and Junior Mints.Life. Was. Good.
Can any of us not relate to that idea of wanting more? I think our culture is almost built on this idea of more, we want more skill, we want more knowledge, we want more experience. We want more time. We want more to be more prepared. There's that more, again. Phil talked a bit last week about our desire for more security, more accomplishment, more earnings. We want more, it's almost built into the Western culture. And in this wanting of more, we're also confronted with all the noise around us. I remember a couple of years ago when I returned to town to face toilet paper shortages. I'd never thought of wanting more toilet paper, but I was in line and showing up at the beginning of stores being open. Back in my marketing days, we were always coming up with the latest promotion. Buy one, get one free. You know, buy one the second one is at half price. I find myself as a shopper still succumbing to that. There is only me and my dog in my household, and yet there I am. Buy one, get one free. I am right there in line. We want more. And my trip this past summer to see my family in Salt Lake City, we needed to make a stop at Walgreens. My granddaughter, who does have a bit of a sweet tooth, saw this giant box of Junior Mints. She wanted it.

Though you may not know his name, Robert Welch (1899-1985)—founder of the John Birch Society—is easily one of the most significant architects of our current political moment. In A Conspiratorial Life, the first full-scale biography of Welch, Edward H. Miller delves deep into the life of an overlooked figure whose ideas nevertheless reshaped the American right. Welch became an unlikely candy magnate, founding the company that created Sugar Daddies, Junior Mints, and other famed confections. In 1958, he funneled his wealth into establishing the organization that would define his legacy and change the face of American politics: the John Birch Society. Join us when Edward H. This episode presents a fat-shaming, shallow Elaine! Not the best look for our Lainey, but I discuss that it's actually liberating to see her be as shallow as the men. It's complicated, but I explain. Oh, and there's a junior mint gag.
Wonderful comedian Becky Lynn takes us on a delightful dive into the 90's to look at two hotties (Whoopi Goldberg and Ray Liotta) finding joy during a time of grief, in Corrina, Corrina! In this episode we learn about Becky's deep history with Junior Mints, the best movies to take camping (2 for the adults, 2 for the kids), what kind of jokes we would love to see disappear from kids movies, why it's ok to show some freakin' joy onscreen rather than tragedy, and we wax poetic (e.g. “omg omg”) about how hot Whoopi and Ray are. Like. Omg. Special Surprise Bonus Co-Host: Becky's Apple watch. Enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it, and check out Becky's website at ohthatsbecky.com! Other movies discussed include Finding Nemo (2003), Dazed and Confused (1993), Matilda (1996), and Superbad (2007). Erin and T. Hack can't stand it when their food touches....but the real weirdo here is Steve, who likes to squish his Junior Mints with his fingers before he eats them... Do you eat Kit Kats in layers, or maybe you eat all the chocolate off a PB cup before the PB? What's the weird way you eat something?

We have all dealt with the shame of not being able to "hear God". Today Brandon and Joey discuss what hearing God looks like in the fundamentalist church vs how they come to view it post deconstruction. (Also they argue about s'mores and Junior Mints...again...sorry) Welcome to All Things Reconsidered - where we navigate through deconstructing and reconstructing our faith together. Brandon McAlpine and Joey Trieb are exfundamentalist exvangelical Christians who have deconstructed away from Bible literalism and other harmful theology like that Rapture, Creationism, Christian Nationalism and purity culture. Junior Mint and Odette continue from where we left them...more or less. Things haven't exactly gone to plan and their mission is beyond derailed. Will our heroes(?) find their way back on the path or will they be stalled yet again by echoes of their past. Not to brag but we're offering you an episode you can't refuse. • • • Ambient battle noise: swords and shouting - pfranzen Crowd Screaming, A.wav - Inspector J This episode contains the songs "Tavern Loop", "Medieval Loop", "Winter Night", "Entertainment", "Battle of the Creek" and "The Cold Battle" by Alexander Nakarada (www.serpentsoundstudios.com) which are Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
All aboard! The adventures of Junior Mint and Odette (and Christofer) continue aboard Captain Smith's ship on their way to accomplish the dubious task that was vaguely explained by Ohaku. On this week's episode, Tony takes a well needed break as Lucas and Jacob welcome good friend/arch snack nemesis Laura to give us her opinion on some popular snack foods. Laura gives a tip on how to make all snacks better, Jacob will probably suffer from PTSD going forward, and Lucas has some strong words about Junior Mints and cheese in a can. In 2014, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the debut of the "show about nothing," the Brooklyn Cyclones, a minor league baseball team, renamed their MCU ballpark in Brooklyn, New York for a promo night to honor the legendary, made-up latex business in the 1990's sitcom Seinfeld by calling it, “Vandelay Industries Park.” And it didn't stop there. It drew a sell-out, packed crowd of Seinfeld enthusiasts. When we walked into the stadium that July night in 2014, we received the “Keith Hernandez Magic Loogie” bobblehead and were greeted by the real Kramer (aka “the Ass-man” aka Michael Richards). We also saw the actual “Soup Nazi” and men wearing “the puffy shirt!”…There was a real “Marine Biologist” who threw out the ceremonial first pitch (which was a Titleist golf ball haha) and instead of the 7th inning stretch, there were a group of Elaine look-a-likes on the field who did Elaine's notorious “little kicks dance” (Yikes! haha), and to celebrate the night, “a donation was made in our names to The Human Fund – Money For People” courtesies of George Costanza. He was so nice. He made a donation in everyone's name. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, the “foul poles” were renamed that evening as “the festivus poles” for George's father, Frank's made-up fake holiday! There was a George Castanza Snickers eating compeition and you could air grievances at the kiosk down the first base line. They even had a low talking PA Announcer haha. Everyone, including us who are huge Seinfeld fanatics had such a great time that night in Brooklyn in 2014, that the organization quickly decided to make the promo night an annual tradition. When ballgames pick back up, and fans are permitted again, be sure to put this promo night on your family's calendar so you can get your “fusilli Jerry or Lloyd Braun bobblehead!” If you are a United States Postal Service worker (shout out to Newman haha) and come dressed as one with your USPS ID card you will get in free! Lastly, don't fill up too much beforehand at dinner before you go to the game because they will be sure to have all “The Big Salads”, “Marble Ryes”, “Junior Mints” and “Black and White Cookies” you can eat. In this hilarious podcast episode the two of us laugh it up, reminisce about that inaugural night, and talk about our all-time favorite Seinfeld episodes, characters, and scenes.
