Jim Malliard welcomes Tanner Campbell to the show. Tanner is a philosophy writer and podcaster who focuses on bringing the philosophy of stoicism out of the pages of history and modernizing it to a more practical and useful way of individuals living today. During the interview, Tanner discusses his new book, Living Well: Stoic Ideas for a Better Life, and how stoicism can be applied to modern day situations. He shares some tips on how to live a more stoic life, including the importance of self-awareness, focus, and detachment. Zeno of Citium was a Greek philosopher who founded the Stoic school of thought in 300 BCE. He got the idea for Stoicism after he was shipwrecked and lost everything he owned. He went to the Oracle of Delphi for guidance and she told him to take on the power of the dead. Zeno interpreted this to mean that he should study the great thinkers of the past and learn from their wisdom. Stoicism is a philosophy that emphasizes self-control, rationality, and stoic acceptance of the things we cannot change.   In the 300 BC, a man named Zeno of Citium had a dream in which the goddess Athena told him to become a philosopher. He took this to mean that he should become pale like the dead, as pale people at the time were often indoors reading books. He went on to found the philosophy of Stoicism, which is based on the idea that the only good is the development of a virtuous character. Stoicism quickly caught on, and Marcus Aurelius, who reigned from 160-180 AD, is considered the poster boy of Stoicism. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Thanks for joining us on this episode of Podcast Insider. Looking to be a guest on the show? Let us know. Emails are listed at the bottom of show notes. Carolyn Berry from Adventures with Grammy, says her show will double its listeners in 2022.  ( good plug! )  Don't know.  Carolyn?  Did it double?  Maxwell Ivey Jr. from What's Your Excuse network and The Blind Blogger says: I predict even more people, companies, and organizations will launch podcasts. I predict Spotify and others will continue to try to win the podcasting world like it's a game of monopoly. I predict that more people will be hosting with Blubrry. Dave Keeshan from The Future is Not Set, I predict the option to open a payment stream to podcasts will increase. So far Patreon and buymeacoffee.com are sorta fits. The start of tipping, or lightning/crypto payments, or anything that can be done from a handheld device will become more common. This will hopefully happen as a result of people's frustration with the increase of ads into their podcast experience. Hopefully, this will also lead to a more dynamic podcast, where they can be delivered with and without ads. There will be more live streaming like events/productions. Clubhouse, Fireside, Wisdom, are all chasing "something". The thing, live, interactive audio, which can be recorded and released later as a podcast, maybe as different as radio shows are to podcasts (which are also released after the fact as podcasts) The CHECK YOUR HEAD Podcast's prediction for 2022 @checkheadpod is that it will be the biggest year for podcast growth as more people turn to #podcasts for safe, enjoyable & free entertainment during #pandemiclife.  Josh - Tips of the Slung I wouldn't be surprised if some of the shows under the banners of bigger companies (in particular shows that were independent and successful prior to signing) try to break their contracts and go indie again. Daniel J. Lewis from Audacity to Podcast -  I expect we'll see another huge platform support podcasts—maybe Microsoft, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Also much bigger adoption of Podcasting 2.0. Jim Malliard from The Malliard Report:  I predict Spotify will close the free version of anchor and try to recruit shows to only be on Spotify, only with free music accounts. Articles: HotPod / The Verge's predictions (toward the bottom of this article) Pacific Content's Annual Prediction article Kids' Podcast Predictions for 2022 From the Team: Toby Goodman from Blubrry Pro Production:  There will be at least one best selling book about podcasting coming in late Feb! (hint: Toby is writing a book)  :) Ultimately I say this... The industry will be split into even more subsections from a revenue-generating standpoint. I don't think paid subscriptions will grow wildly unless podcasters are prepared to give more than just... more audio away. ie: More in-person events, memberships… Barry Kantz -  I think the blockchain will have an impact on podcasting over the next couple of years. Todd's Predictions:  Facebook will be #2 by end of 2022  (BONK!) More consolidation of conglomerates buying podcast companies (Some) More advertising opportunities for independent podcasters (Yes) The growth of the podcast space will go back to pre-pandemic levels (Maybe?) More companies will exercise private podcasting in their organizations (Some) Anchor will add another million dead show (Yes) Apple will open up API submission to Apple Podcasts (soon) Mike's Predictions:  Facebook WILL NOT be the #2 listening platform by the end of 2022. As far as my self-control is concerned, I also muted myself for quite some time. I think you're displaying a solid use of the controls there, so thank you.[00:03:56]This week was the very first week that all my TV movie fandom shows are live. The Indie Drop-in Network is 100% a feed drop network. The show shows are all about podcasters.[00:05:44]A feed drop is when you take an episode of your show and give it to another podcaster to play on their show. For most podcasters, you want very few feed drops in your feed. If there are too many feed drops, the audience starts to get pissed.[00:09:34]Jeff: Maybe we can talk about how to choose a show for a Feed Drop. I think Jeff, you feed dropped on True Crime, which has like a million-something downloads. But very few people go on the show notes and click the subscribe link.[00:12:20]The downloads are great, but I didn't see the conversion on my end. It's because the True Crime fans I've marketed to are very specifically true crime listeners. There just was no reason for them to convert to a listener of Indie podcasters. If done right, it really can work.[00:16:46]comedy is not really like a niche, it's more of like something that you add to a niche. These shows are consistently funny, their tone is consistent. Those convert higher. When the show doesn't have a personality, it doesn't have a vibe. That's when it seems to struggle.[00:22:44]A feed drop is when you use a previous show of a friend to fill in a slot. The best thing to do is do feed drop swaps because it's good for everybody. If you're taking a week off, record a different intro than a regular swap.[00:30:49]And it doesn't work if you don't tell people what their show is about. What I started doing is saying, hey, Jim, just feed Dropped a show. He doesn't talk paranormal all the time, but he had this awesome ghost hunter on. It's totally different.[00:32:06]Who you swap with is much more important than how large the show is. It's like a massive filter for quality listeners. Having people on your show is content for your listeners, not really to grow it.[00:37:17]Jeff: Niche is so important, and I think it's more important than ever in podcasting. Your show needs to be amazing before you get featured on. People should definitely submit to ads. The key is you have to do that stuff when you're ready.[00:40:39]Gregory: How do you approach the other podcast that you're wanting to feed Drop swap with? Greg: I would start with under 200 reviews on Apple podcasts. You could probably do it every single month successfully and without pissing off your fans.[00:45:54]This week's podcasting power hour airs live every Monday at 09:00 p. m. Eastern.   For the last show to 2021, we asked our staff and on social what they think might happen in podcasting in 2022.  Today's show is a bit of a format break.  Have a happy new year!  See ya in 2022! Carolyn Berry, from Adventures with Grammy,  says her show will double its listeners in 2022.  ( good plug! ) Maxwell Ivey Jr. from What's Your Excuse network and the blind blogger says:  I predict even more people, companies, and organizations will launch podcasts. I predict Spotify and others will continue to try to win the podcasting world like it's a game of monopoly. And I predict that more people will be hosting with Blubrry. AND There will be more live streaming like events/productions. Clubhouse, FIreside, Wisdom, are all chasing "something". The thing, live, interactive audio, which can be recorded and released later as a podcast, maybe as different as radio shows are to podcasts (which are also released after the fact as podcasts) @checkheadpod  The CHECK YOUR HEAD Podcast's prediction for 2022 is that it will be the biggest year for podcast growth as more people turn to #podcasts for safe, enjoyable & free entertainment during #pandemiclife. Josh fromTips of the Slung I wouldn't be surprised if some of the shows under the banners of bigger companies (in particular shows that were independent and successful prior to signing) try to break their contracts and go indie again. [ Josh - Tips of the Slung ] Daniel J. Lewis from The Audacity to Podcast -  I expect we'll see another huge platform support podcasts—maybe Microsoft, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Also much bigger adoption of Podcasting 2.0. Jim Malliard from The Malliard Report:  I predict Spotify will close the free version of anchor and try to recruit shows to only be on Spotify, only with free music accounts. Articles: HotPod / The Verge's predictions (toward the bottom of this article) Pacific Content's Annual Prediction article From the Team: Toby Goodman from Blubrry Pro Production:  There will be at least one best selling book about podcasting coming in late Feb! (hint: Toby is writing a book)  :) Ultimately I say this... The industry will be split into even more subsections from a revenue-generating standpoint. I don't think paid subscriptions will grow wildly unless podcasters are prepared to give more than just... more audio away. ie: More in-person events, memberships… Barry Kantz, RawVoice CFO -  I think the blockchain will have an impact on podcasting over the next couple of years. Todd's Predictions:  Facebook will be #2 by end of 2022 More consolidation of conglomerates buying podcast companies More advertising opportunities for independent podcasters The growth of the podcast space will go back to pre-pandemic levels More companies will exercise private podcasting in their organizations Anchor will add another million dead show Apple will open up API submission to Apple Podcasts Mike's Predictions:  Facebook WILL NOT be the #2 listening platform by the end of 2022. Soundcloud will still exist (even though I've been predicting its death for years). Feedburner will continue to be barely active with a slight update from Google. I will get a wild hair and start another podcast of some sort. NOT related to podcasting.  Joe Rogan will announce he is leaving Spotify as an exclusive and will return to being an independent podcaster/YouTuber.

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. Your host for this two-hundereth and twenty-eighth episode of…oh wait, it's 228 total shows..and of those this IS the two-hundreth and twenty-eighth…but it's only the twenty-eighth episode of the show called Succotash Shut-In: The Soundcast Stimulus Package which it currently is. I alternate hosting duties with original show-host and creator, Marc Hershon. Last week on Epi227, Marc interviewed comedian, author, and soundcaster Dylan Brody whose soundcast - called Dylan Brody's Neighbor's Couch Revisited - which he shares with Darren Staley - had both myself and Marc on as  guests. Marc's most recent show featured a fascinating conversation with Mr. Brody and I urge you to listen to it...not necessarily now but soon...of course that is entirely up to you. It's one of the joys of soundcasts, or "podcasts" as some people still refer to them: the freedom to listen whenever you want on whatever medium you prefer to listen to your downloaded or streaming content. Additionally, on the subject of Dylan Brody, be sure to check out his video web series "The Corona Dialogues" and also pre-order his new book coming out, "Relatively Painless" by clicking on the link on the blog at www.succotashshow.com or through his own website at http://www.DylanBrody.com.  This episode I've got clips for you from soundcasts Of Course You Realize THIS Means Podcast, Cave Crew Radio, and The Malliard Report. I've also got an ad from Henderson's Pant's around here somewhere for y'all…and as there are still updates over at Trumpoetry.com I will be reading a selection…which I have not yet selected. I should point out that both Henderson's Pants and TrumPoetry.com are not real sponsors. We are, as of my writing this, without an actual paying sponsor...and on the lookout for a real one. CLIPS Of Course You Realize THIS Means Podcast - A Looney Tunes Discussion From their show description: Welcome to Looneyland! This is where you'll find fans of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the rest of the gang talking about the history of the franchise known as Looney Tunes. In this exploration of Wacky Wabbits, Screwy Ducks and the artistry of all classic Looney Tunes shorts we will also find ourselves in uncharted territories where we discover re-imaginings of these beloved characters and motion picture appearances you may not know about. Clipped from their September 10th episode of this year, our segment features host Jonathan Graves and guest @UnstableGam3r. Cave Crew Radio Hosts Brian Crean aka The Big B (Metal Thunder Radio), Choo Choo Stu (London, England) and Double K aka DK (Double Talk Radio) reveals what REALLY gets talked about in the man cave. Our clip is from September 11th this year, from the episode entitled "Two whores and nothing  happened" and we feature the part from the beginning of the story that inspired the episode's title. The Malliard Report Taken from the show's description: Join host Jim Malliard for the weekly podcast that ventures into the fringe, the unusual, and even current events and is not afraid to ask the tough questions. An interview-based podcast that features real-time interactions with live listeners. Stripped of rigid traditional show formalities, and no fear of controversy, The Malliard Report is sure to feature something for everyone. Our featured clip is from September 15th of this year and gets into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with Jim's guest Priyanka Komala; podcast host, keynote speaker, and STEM advocate to discuss what it looks like to be a woman in the STEM field. Those are the clips of this week's show, complete with homesite and Twitter links where applicable. I do hope we are a pleasant way to pass the time. This year has been…interesting. Not in a good way, mind you, but in that "May you live in interesting times" kind-of way. I hope you found the content interesting in a good way. I hope that you seek out the soundcasts presented in this episode to listen to more episodes…or perhaps you will be distracted by a soundcast on your way to find these soundcasts. I'd say it's difficult to predict but prediction is the easy part…I'd just have to change the "perhaps" part to "I predict" and then, at some point, it becomes true…like how at some point COVID-19 will go away. That's not innacurate ultimately but it shouldn't be the governing factor of a society's choices about being cautious with the health of themselves or others. Everything, including us, will eventually "go away"…some of us would rather not be taken out by a virus that one could have taken more steps to avoid…Well, you probably already know this or have heard this type of thing before…unless this is so far in the future that…ugh, you know what? I'm exhausted. Election week has been a real stress test. I appreciate your listening. Be decent to each other, wear a mask when it can mean the difference between life and homicide thru negligence, and while we are hopefully rebuilding the relatively sane society that our children desperately need, if you would like to share this form of entertainment with others we would appreciate it greater that you can ever know. It's what we mean when we ask you to please, pass the Succotash… - Tyson Saner

Hawaii Missile Alert: The STRANGE Narrative - Interview with Jim Malliard

The Safety Doc Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2018 60:01

Paranormal Investigator Jim Malliard and host David Perrodin discuss the puzzling inconsistencies of the January 13, 2018 notification that Hawaii was minutes from a ballistic missile impact.  Although the alert was an error, the circumstances of the event are convoluted and information released since the flub only adds to the confusion.  Jim and David smoke out some of the possible truths of this rapidly hushed incident.  THE EVENT.  "An early-morning emergency alert mistakenly warning of an incoming ballistic missile attack was dispatched to cellphones across Hawaii on Saturday, setting off widespread panic in a state that was already on edge because of escalating tensions between the United States and North Korea. The alert, sent by the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, was revoked 38 minutes after it was issued, prompting confusion over why it was released — and why it took so long to rescind. State officials and residents of a normally tranquil part of the Pacific, as well as tourists swept up in the panic, immediately expressed outrage." (NYT - January 13, 2018)  HOW ALERTS ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK.  To describe the steps in issuing an inbound missile to the United States, Dr. Perrodin extracted upon his personal research of the 9/11 attacks and the change that day in national DEFCON status from a 5 (lowest state of readiness) to 3 (Air Force ready to mobilize in 15 minutes). The DEFense readiness CONdition (DEFCON) is an alert state used by the United States Armed Forces and is controlled by the President and Secretary of Defense.  David argued that his interpretation has always been that the (1) North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) would detect the threat through satellites, seismic or other sensors. (2) US Strategic Command (STRATCOMM) would then verify the threat through various tracking and confirmation measures, (3) STRATCOMM would inform the President and Secretary of Defense and a decision would be made regarding the US response, which might result in a change of the DEFCON status which then triggers a prescribed sequence of readiness and offensive tactics.  It is at this step that the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) would be activated by the President and messages would be delivered via EBS as an expeditious method of communicating with the American public in the event of a war, threat of war, or grave national crisis.  Hence, the Hawaii alert warning should not have been possible as any such warning would have been per directive of the President.  THE STORY ISN'T MAKING SENSE.  Jim Malliard pointed out several discrepancies with the missile alert and subsequent actions, including: Why wasn't it possible to immediately send a corrective message from the same system that sent the false alert? If this was a drill, why not just send out a message stating that this is a test of the emergency alert system – and only a test – there would be no need to state that it was a missile warning? The corrective measures now includes a second verify that the alert should be issued – this seems woefully inadequate relative to the degree of the threat. Why is the employee responsible for this not responding to questing and why was he re-assigned?  This suggests that the act might have been a prank that got out of hand, but wouldn't that result in immediate termination? If this was a flaw in the system, then this mistake could have been made by any employee, so why re-assign this person? Could this have been a hack? If so, the lack of media coverage certainly supports a narrative of wanting to bury this incident. Why hasn't NORAD or STRATCOMM chimed in on this – perhaps denoting the standard operating procedures, sans guarded information, of how the American public would be warned of an inbound missile?
