Ep #307 - The Whistle-Stop Tour of Stoicism - An Interview with podcaster and author, Tanner Campbell I am honored and excited to have Tanner Campbell on Empowering Chats and tease out the question of, “What is Stoicism?” Which also happens to be the title of the book he co-authored with Kai Whiting. This year's overarching theme for Empowering Chats is Soul Growth. And this podcast interview with Tanner I think is a wonderful way to kick off 2025. To me Tanner's book is like the “cliff notes” version of stoicism. The book illustrates an easy introduction to stoicism that is understandable, corrects stereotypes and defines it appropriately, rescuing it from the social media calamities circulating on the web. To me stoicism feels like the cornerstone for humanity. Stoicism is defined as An ancient Greek philosophy that is also a full and complete life philosophy. The word stoic has undergone an odd transformation over time. Today, it is used to describe someone who is indifferent to pleasure or pain. In ancient times, however, a Stoic was a member of a philosophical school whose original members gathered in Athens at a painted colonnade — or stoa in Greek. The modern meaning of the word, for many, refers to stoic as cold and inhumane. In reality, Stoicism is a humanistic philosophy designed to help its practitioners find an inner peace that cannot be shaken or influenced by outer events. The practice of stoicism is not about being right and the other person being wrong. It is a practice of questioning and it requires the individual to take responsibility for their life, their actions and then to look inward for answers. Tanner also has his own podcast entitled, Practical Stoicism where he prompts his listeners to ask themselves daily questions so as to get the process going of living a stoic life. University of Arizona researchers have created the first astronomical equivalent of a fingerprint database for satellites, a critical first step toward easily identifying human-made objects in the increasingly crowded geostationary orbit. This database, or spectral atlas, includes 96 satellites in the geostationary orbit, or GEO - home to satellites used for communications, imaging, navigation and other purposes - that are visible from Tucson, Arizona. Adam Battle, a Ph.D. candidate in the U of A Lunar and Planetary Laboratory supported by the Space4 Center, led the research, which was published Tuesday in The Planetary Science Journal. "Satellites look like tiny dots in the sky, even through most telescopes. For decades, humans have launched tens of thousands of objects into space with no mechanism for identifying them easily," Battle said. "This is the first time this sort of systematic, big atlas of spectral data has been collected for these objects. It gives us a baseline for differentiating space objects, for knowing where everything is and what has changed and keeping that space safe." The United States Space Surveillance Network, part of the U.S. Space Command, tracks more than 45,000 artificial objects in Earth's orbit, including about 350 active payloads in GEO. The GEO belt is a unique orbit about 22,000 miles above Earth's equator. Satellites in GEO orbit at the same rate and direction as Earth; from the ground, they appear to stand still. Only so many orbital slots are available in GEO, making them valuable to companies and nations looking to put satellites there. The average lifespan of a satellite in GEO is about 15 to 20 years, after which they are maneuvered into a higher, "graveyard" orbit where they remain as space junk. "The orbital space around the Earth is getting congested, and we unfortunately do not have license places for satellites to identify them easily. This work is the first step towards making space safe, secure and sustainable," said Vishnu Reddy, director of the university's Space4 Center and a planetary science professor who co-authored the paper. Reddy, Battle's Ph.D. advisor, initiated the project when he started at the U of A nearly a decade ago. Other co-authors of the research include Roberto Furfaro, professor of systems and industrial engineering and Space4 deputy director, and Space4 Center software engineer Tanner Campbell. The U of A team used the power of spectroscopy to create the atlas. With spectroscopy, the team can measure how the sun's light interacts with materials on the satellites like metals, paint and solar panels, and how these interactions change with illumination conditions. The results are a detailed pattern of colors for those unique conditions - a color fingerprint - that can be used to identify that specific object. Using a telescope built by U of A students and housed on campus, Battle observed objects in GEO for 192 nights during every season between January 2020 and June 2022, except for the cloudy summer months. A typical night's worth of observing involved imaging one object every 45 seconds for the entire night. This generated 284 separate datasets and about 190,000 spectra. As part of his study, Battle focused on repeated observations of five satellite bus types - the central structure to which communications arrays, thrusters and solar panels are mounted - to determine how their spectra varied over nights and seasons and how they differed from the spectra of natural objects. The resulting atlas contains the unique detailed patterns of colors for 96 individual satellites observed in GEO from Tucson. "Historically, scientists have used brightness measurements, as the phase angle changes. But using spectroscopy allows you to add another layer of information, and the ultimate goal is to be able to uniquely identify different satellites with machine learning algorithms trained on these 'fingerprints,'" Battle said. "We can also compare these spectra to sample...
Tanner Campbell converses with Michael Tremblay, an MMA fighter, writer, and co-creator of Stoa Stoic Meditations app. They delve into several topics, including the role of sport and exercise in addressing rage and anger. Michael Tremblay shares his insights on the practice of martial arts, particularly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and its philosophical alignment with Stoicism. He emphasizes how martial arts were his first exposure to explicit moral education, teaching not just physical skills but also the importance of character development, self-control, and ethical behavior. Discussing anger, Tremblay highlights the Stoic perspective, as outlined by Seneca, which views anger as a reaction to perceived harm that demands punishment. He distinguishes between two types of anger: the immediate, reactionary kind often experienced in daily frustrations, and a deeper, more persistent anger stemming from significant personal betrayals or grievances. Tremblay notes that while physical activities like martial arts can effectively mitigate the immediate, reactionary anger, they are less effective in addressing deeper, long-standing feelings of rage or betrayal. He explains how Stoicism helps navigate these emotions by encouraging a present-focused mindset, acknowledging past mistakes while striving to change and improve. In dealing with regret, Tremblay and Campbell agree that while Stoicism advocates for acceptance and moving forward, it also acknowledges the natural feelings of sadness and shame that come with regret. They underscore the importance of understanding and transforming these feelings constructively, focusing on the present and future actions rather than dwelling on past errors. The conversation also touches upon Epictetus, his background as a slave, and his philosophical teachings. Tremblay provides insights into Epictetus's approach to teaching young Roman men destined for politics or industry, emphasizing the importance of not just learning philosophy but living it. In summary, the podcast highlights the value of physical disciplines like martial arts in managing immediate anger and stress, while recognizing the need for philosophical reflection and self-improvement in addressing deeper emotional issues. The discussion reinforces the Stoic principles of focusing on present actions, accepting the past, and continually striving for personal growth and ethical living. -- Become a Patron: https://stoicismpod.com/members Check out Neurohacker: https://neurohacker.com/practical Podcast Artwork by Randy Johnson: https://originalrandy.com Stoa Conversations: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7wHSqUf6BZDIUBDu0YgAAs Stoa Meditation App: https://stoameditation.com Learn more about your ad choices. In this week's episode of "Practical Stoicism," host Tanner Campbell tackles a diverse set of questions from Patreon supporters, diving deep into the application of Stoicism in modern life. Campbell begins by addressing the nature of Stoicism as a practical philosophy that requires active engagement and contextual understanding, warning against the misuse of Stoic quotes out of context, akin to religious dogmatism. He emphasizes that Stoicism, much like any philosophy, demands practice and interpretation rather than rote memorization of texts. The episode covers four main questions: 1. The distinction between externals and indifferents, particularly our bodies, and how Stoicism views the impact of physical health on mental well-being. Campbell clarifies that while our bodies are considered indifferent, how we choose to care for them is not, highlighting the importance of personal responsibility in maintaining health. 2. Strategies for using Stoic principles to prevent coworkers' actions from negatively affecting one's day. The host suggests that adopting a Stoic mindset involves choosing not to let external behaviors dictate one's emotional state, underscoring the value of practicing Stoicism in interpersonal relationships. 3. The ethical considerations of vegetarian and vegan diets through a Stoic lens. Campbell explores the ancient Stoics' views on extravagance and simplicity in diet, ultimately arguing for a balanced approach that respects both personal health and the treatment of animals. 4. The potential conflict between striving for sagehood and technological or societal progress. The discussion centers on whether the pursuit of Stoic ideals might hinder innovation, with Campbell concluding that Stoicism encourages curiosity and the rational pursuit of ideas that align with one's nature and contribute to the common good. Campbell's thoughtful exploration of these topics demonstrates Stoicism's relevance in addressing contemporary ethical dilemmas and personal challenges. By emphasizing contextual understanding and the practical application of Stoic principles, the episode invites listeners to engage more deeply with Stoicism as a guide to living well. -- Become a Patron: https://stoicismpod.com/members Check out Neurohacker: https://neurohacker.com/practical Learn more about your ad choices. Donald Robertson joins Tanner Campbell to discuss his new book, "Marcus Aurelius: The Stoic Emperor," published by Yale University Press. The conversation delves into the life and philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, shedding light on both well-documented and lesser-known aspects of his reign. Robertson emphasizes the substantial amount of information available about Marcus Aurelius, more so than for most other ancient philosophers. Despite historical gaps and unreliable sources, a wealth of details about his reign, personal writings, and even his appearance at various stages of life is accessible. This rich trove of information provides a detailed picture of his life, philosophy, and the era he lived in. An interesting topic discussed is Marcus Aurelius's engagement in activities such as leading a dance troupe known as the "College of the Salii" or "The Leaping Priests." This group performed martial dances in honor of Mars, the god of war, serving both a religious function and preparing young men for military service. The discussion portrays Marcus Aurelius as a multifaceted emperor deeply involved in the cultural and religious practices of his time. The conversation also touches on the historical and personal challenges Marcus Aurelius encountered, including the political intrigue and his complex relationship with Hadrian. Robertson suggests that the environment of suspicion and surveillance under Hadrian likely influenced Marcus Aurelius's philosophical reflections and his cautious approach to governance. Furthermore, Robertson explores potential controversies and interpretations surrounding Marcus Aurelius's life, particularly his upbringing under Hadrian's influence. The dialogue hints at the darker aspects of Roman society and governance, including exploitation and manipulation at the highest levels of power. Robertson's insights into Marcus Aurelius extend beyond his philosophical musings, offering a glimpse into his personal experiences and the societal norms of his era. The book promises a comprehensive and nuanced portrayal of one of Stoicism's most revered figures, supported by thorough research and historical accuracy. This episode anticipates the revelations in "Marcus Aurelius: The Stoic Emperor" and underscores the importance of understanding historical figures within the full context of their lives. Robertson's work aims to provide a detailed exploration of the Stoic emperor's life and legacy. In our series on stoicism, I kept coming back to the aspect of control. Controlling our emotions. Controlling our reactions. Controlling our internal world so as to not be controlled by the outer world. It's a valid perspective, but then I was reminded that I don't actually want control any more than I want money. I just want what money can hopefully buy. Likewise, I just want what control can hopefully afford me. And the word that surfaced was…harmony. I often find myself saying I want peace, but I struggle with that sounding like I just want life to be easy and stress free, which is not the case. I want the trials and challenges that are so fulfilling to overcome. I want the hero story. But within the ups and down, I want to feel a balance and a rhythm I understand, which is what harmony is. A definition of harmony I greatly appreciate is, an interweaving of different accounts into a single narrative. Our daily life in this world is made up of different accounts of so many things. The stoic way of life is a life devoted to a commitment to a single narrative amongst all those accounts. But don't get caught up in the word stoic. It is an example of a clarified and committed mindset and way of life. You don't have to give it a name, but to find success you will want to decide upon your own way of life and have it clearly defined. What's the difference between a hero and a villain? Virtue. Which is defined as, “Behavior showing high moral standards.” Having a purpose for good as opposed to evil, or even just others as opposed to self alone. We love the character who is resolute upon doing the right thing and seeing it through no matter what. We spend billions of dollars on superhero stories that depict this. People didn't tear up at the end of The Avengers: Endgame when Ironman dies just because a battle is won. It's because it was a battle for good. We've been studying stoicism which is based on virtue, and from this, a decided way of life. In truth it's the rare individual who actually outlines and commits to a clarified way of life. I feel most people want to be good, and at heart, they are. But without intention we go about our days being swayed by the culture and circumstances. This is part three of my series on Tanner Campbell and his rapidly growing podcast, Practical Stoicism. People are flocking to it and I believe this is why; they are longing for meaning, purpose, and to know what they are about. Stoicism is just that, knowing what you are about. I invited Tom Ziglar to discuss this with me. Tom is son of Zig Ziglar, CEO of Ziglar Inc., and renowned author, speaker and coach. And my dear friend. The Ziglar way is just that, a decided way of life. One of virtue, honor, trust, and faith. Right at the beginning Tom quips that after hearing my initial talk with Tanner, he now feels, “He's a stoic and he didn't know it.” We talk about living out virtue, faith, religion, self-control, and integrity. Tom also discusses five aspects of trust, which we both believe is our greatest asset. Each of us is waking up every day and engaging in a “way of life.” It's either one we've chosen, or one we've allowed ourselves to fall into. Though in truth, none of us ever lives a perfect day, so we are all then on the spectrum of living how we intentionally want and living at the mercy of our appetites and ignorance. The more aware, decided, and convicted we are to a way of life we uphold and are dedicated to, the more we will fall on the healthier side of the spectrum. As Tanner Campbell and I discussed at the outset of our initial talk together in episode 1143, stoicism can be said to be a state of mind, but in this episode as we are discussing Tanner's personal efforts to live a stoic life, we unwrap the pursuit of an aspiring way of life. This is my values, motives and habits episode, part 2 of this series on Tanner Campbell and stoicism. Tanner Campbell is an American philosopher of Stoicism whose goal is to clear up contemporary miscommunications about Stoicism, with a focus to uphold what virtue is. He shares this daily in his Practical Stoicism podcast which has quickly catapulted to the top podcast rankings. Here Tanner talks through his pursuit of Hierocles concept of “circles of concern” which radiates outward, from family to friends, community, non-human animals, and the environment. In Tanner's desire for personal awareness his mantra is asking, “What does this action or thought say about my character,” and “Who can I walk alongside and be helpful to in a meaningful way?” In discussing health and wellness, Tanner cites this area is not his strong suit, but his motive is in asking himself, “If I don't care about my health, what does it say about my character?” This and more coming up. What is reality? Is there a reality? We would say a tree falling on your house, or inheriting twenty million dollars are objective realities. They actually did happen. Those would be facts. But it's our perception and interpretation of them that matter. That becomes our reality. Are those events good or bad? Why did they happen? Stoicism is interested in our impression and assent, which I paraphrase to say our interpretation and ensuing belief. Then Stoicism would ask what our role and responsibility are. The topic and concept of stoicism has gained popularity as of late but I haven't given it a focus here on the show. Now…we hit it. Or to be fair, we hit one tangent of it. There are others and I'll be looking to have more discussion around the topic in coming episodes. For this series, I've brought on Tanner Campbell. Tanner is an American philosopher of Stoicism whose goal is to clear up contemporary miscommunications about Stoicism, with a focus to uphold what virtue is, against some traditional interpretations of Stoicism, and as Tanner says, “Challenge the watered down Silicon Valley take.” Of relevance, it was only 15 months ago when Tanner launched his podcast, called, Practical Stoicism. The show has “gone viral” as they say, and has already eclipsed 500,000 downloads per month and is growing rapidly. Which is to say the show has done in 15 months what it took me many, many years to achieve. At this rate it will likely become the top one or two podcasts on stoicism on planet Earth in the next year. A note, stoicism, like AA, has a primary spiritual component to it. I wasn't shy in pressing in on this with Tanner. Not to advocate it, as it doesn't line up with my personal faith either, but to do an honest unpacking of it. You are free to adopt what feels useful to you. The core principals of stoicism I feel we would all do well to engage with, and that's the focus of our show. Tanner is the founder of Practical Philosophy and the host of the Practical Stoicism podcast. He's currently working on what is in my opinion a very noble goal – a platform for academics to independently share their wisdom with those willing to hear it. He has also authored a book called “Practical Stoicism” and has another, “Stoicism But Brief” coming out very soon so stay tuned for that. In this episode, Tanner and I talk about Stoicism, of course, but in the context of the Western world. Stoicism is a Western philosophy by definition, but how could it be that our current value system in the west is misaligned with virtue ethics? I really enjoyed chatting with Tanner and our conversation took many surprising yet interesting twists and turns. Without further ado, please welcome Tanner Campbell. Jim Malliard welcomes Tanner Campbell to the show. Tanner is a philosophy writer and podcaster who focuses on bringing the philosophy of stoicism out of the pages of history and modernizing it to a more practical and useful way of individuals living today. During the interview, Tanner discusses his new book, Living Well: Stoic Ideas for a Better Life, and how stoicism can be applied to modern day situations. He shares some tips on how to live a more stoic life, including the importance of self-awareness, focus, and detachment. Zeno of Citium was a Greek philosopher who founded the Stoic school of thought in 300 BCE. He got the idea for Stoicism after he was shipwrecked and lost everything he owned. He went to the Oracle of Delphi for guidance and she told him to take on the power of the dead. Zeno interpreted this to mean that he should study the great thinkers of the past and learn from their wisdom. Stoicism is a philosophy that emphasizes self-control, rationality, and stoic acceptance of the things we cannot change. In the 300 BC, a man named Zeno of Citium had a dream in which the goddess Athena told him to become a philosopher. He took this to mean that he should become pale like the dead, as pale people at the time were often indoors reading books. He went on to found the philosophy of Stoicism, which is based on the idea that the only good is the development of a virtuous character. Stoicism quickly caught on, and Marcus Aurelius, who reigned from 160-180 AD, is considered the poster boy of Stoicism. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Is iHeart scamming the podcasting industry? That's the implication of an article this week that was widely discussed in the podcasting world. The story is from Bloomberg and written by Ashley Carman, one of the most respected reporters in our industry. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-09-27/inside-podcasters-explosive-audience-growthAdvertising buys in podcasting are based on audience size - downloads and streams. According to Carman, publishers are buying ads inside mobile games. The publisher can claim a dubious download, as WELL as an ad impression for a commercial that may not be heard. Are they gaming the system? Well, opinions are all over the map on that. For a deeper dive, you can check out this week's Podcast SuperFriends Roundtable where I discuss it with four of my colleagues. https://www.soundoff.network/show/the-podcast-super-friends/podcast-married/Tanner Campbell suggests in his Good Morning Podcasters newsletter that iHeart isn't doing anything wrong here. https://tannerhelps.substack.com/p/iheartradio-isnt-doing-anything-wrong?r=19niz3&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=emailHere are my key takeaways. Will the industry correct for this practice? After this much publicity, I believe it will. Much the same way as Apple Podcasts and Google Search always find a way to punish folks who try to game the system. Also, will this affect your show? No. Unless you are in the rarified air of a large podcast, with huge download numbers, that sells advertising based off of those numbers, this has no bearing on you, or your show. But there is a concern over that anything that hurts the credibility of the podcasting industry. In other podcasting news, PodNews reports that the average length of a podcast is shrinking, from 53 to 37 minutes.https://rephonic.com/blog/podcast-episode-lengthNew podcasts are out from Stephen A.
