We welcomed back to the show noted space attorney Wayne White. Be sure to read his papers posted on the blog regarding his work on space property rights. Property right were a main topic for our discussion with Wayne putting forth a way to achieve them. He constantly referred to his previous Space Pioneer Act for related topics plus methos to employ property rights - legally. Wayne received many emails from listeners plus a few detailed phone calls regarding his property rights ideas. I even responded to one caller with one of my classic rants given the nature of his question. http://www.UnderThePuppet.com -  On February 2, 2025, Under The Puppet along with past show guest Christine Papalexis, the Los Angeles Guild of Puppetry and Bob Baker Marionette Theater held a live episode recording celebrating the puppeteers of Pee Wee's Playhouse.  This event sold out in less than 10 minutes and is, as of this recording, the fastest sell out Bob Baker Marionette Theater has ever had.  And how can it not be when you bring together Wayne White, Ric Heitzman, George McGrath, Alison Mork and Kevin Carlson who are responsible for bringing to life some of the most beloved television characters of all time.  I'm incredibly happy to present the audio recording of that evening on this episode of Under The Puppet. We'd also like to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Lynne Stewart who played Ms. Yvonne on Pee Wee's Playhouse.  This event was recorded before her passing on February 21, 2025 but as you'll hear, she meant a lot to those who worked on the show. We send out our thoughts to Lynne Stewart's family and to all who knew her and were lucky enough to work with her.  She is, was and always will be the most beautiful women in puppet land. The threat of communist takeover in the United States is not an antiquated idea - it's a very clear and present danger. According to Wayne White, an author, political commentator, and historian, communism has been spreading throughout America like a cancer for decades. He discusses the 45 communist goals to take down the United States and reflects on the slow but steady incursion of communist ideologies into American culture. Wayne also discusses the difference between Marxism and communism. “Marxism is an ideology - communism is the implementation of that ideology,” he explains. Most communists in America are blatantly advocating for treason; that is, the overthrow of the republic. Perhaps unsurprisingly, President Obama was the nation's first openly communist executive. From the creator of the acclaimed country music history podcast Cocaine & Rhinestones, comes the epic American saga of country music's legendary royal couple-George Jones and Tammy Wynette. By the early 1960s nearly everybody paying attention to country music agreed that George Jones was the greatest country singer of all time. After taking honky-tonk rockers like "White Lightning" all the way up the country charts, he revealed himself to be an unmatched virtuoso on "She Thinks I Still Care," thus cementing his status as a living legend. That's where the trouble started. Only at this new level of fame did Jones realize he suffered from extreme stage fright. His method of dealing with that involved great quantities of alcohol, which his audience soon discovered as Jones more often than not showed up to concerts falling-down drunk or failed to show up at all. But the fans always forgave him because he just kept singing so damn good. Then he got married to Tammy Wynette right around the time she became one of the most famous women alive with the release of "Stand by Your Man." Tammy Wynette grew up believing George Jones was the greatest country singer of all time. After deciding to become a country singer herself, she went to Nashville, got a record deal, then met and married her hero. With the pop crossover success of "Stand by Your Man" (and the international political drama surrounding the song's lyrics) came a gigantic audience, who were sold a fairy tale image of a couple soon being called The King and Queen of Country Music. Many fans still believe that fairy tale today. The behind-the-scenes truth is very different from the images shown on album covers.Illustrated throughout by singular artist Wayne White, Cocaine & Rhinestones is an unprecedented look at the lives of two indelible country icons, reframing their careers within country music as well as modern history itself. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

He then introduces his guest, author, explorer, and site manager of the South Pole, Wayne L. White, who has written a new book about his experience there. Jim and Wayne discuss the challenges of managing a 46-person crew in the South Pole, and Wayne shares his experience of walking in the winter darkness of the South Pole. Wayne White is an explorer who has walked thousands of miles and never missed a day outside. He joins us to talk about his incredible experience of becoming the station manager at the South Pole. Despite the hardships and feeling helpless of a global pandemic, Wayne and his crew prevailed and he is alive to talk about his journey. He explains that he had always been attracted to harsh conditions and the great explorers of the past, prompting him to pursue his dream of working overseas. He was lucky enough to land the job at the South Pole and is now honored to be able to talk about it. The conversation is about the speaker's experience of moving from the tropics to Antarctica. He had seen advertisements for the job and jumped at the chance to go. He was aware of the differences between the two places, including the temperature. He had grown up in the Midwest and had worked in Alaska, but never experienced cold like when he first arrived at the South Pole. The conversation also touches on the recent cold snap in the US and how it was a good day in Antarctica. In this conversation, Wayne talks about a picture of them taken by Dr. Jeffrey Chan after a long walk in the cold. They talk about how they were wearing warm clothes and knew how to deal with the cold weather. White also mentions budding photographers down there who practice during the winter and how the biggest challenge was the batteries due to the cold. Author Wayne White is a man who knows about America and the Decline of our great Nation. He has spent a lifetime observing the treachery of communists around the world. As keynote speaker, he has spoken to conservative groups and now has put his knowledge into a book. The information is concise and discusses the infiltration by communists into every aspect of American life over the past eighty-plus years. In his book he talks about... America's First Communist President Communism has caused the death of more individuals than any other political system in world history. Communism has enslaved more people than any political system in history. Proponents of Communism cannot point to a single success, yet they spin a narrative of idealism and utopian socialism to attract the young and naïve. They do not seek to improve our nation; they seek to consolidate their power as the rulers of the people. Do we need to bring back HUAC? Islam destroyed Rome not because of military might but because of the collapse of the third pillar which led to the dark ages. Pastor Greg points out the absolute necessity to keep God in the nations DNA. Turkey is committing genocide against Armenian Christians. Israel has voted in the first religiusly conservative givernment in its history since 1948. How might this influence their future. H Wayne White author of a new book entitled The Decline of Ameirca: A Cancer Spreading in America discusses the 45 Goals of the Communist party and how Communism as a description has been replaced by the word Progressive. "Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman. These rough notes and our dead bodies must tell the tale, but surely, surely, a great rich country like ours will see that those who are dependent on us are properly provided for.” - Robert Falcon Scott, Last Expedition Volume 2 The reality of existing in the South Pole? Conditions are not conducive to living without extraordinary measures of physical protection. Explorers who braved that environment prior to any human presence had no such luxury. Wayne White - Cold: Three Winters at the South Pole, Amazon. Tracing the path of men he admired, Wayne has achieved what few have. Completion of 3 Winters (and 2 Summers) at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Fun fact: that job experience makes him uniquely qualified to speak to the challenges that long term space travel might present. Amazon Bio: Hello Folks, I am a US Marine Veteran. I spent two summers and three winters as the Winter Site Manager at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. I have a major interest in historical exploration and have a home in Rockport Texas. I have a very kind hearted wife (Melissa) and due to that have 20 cats!   Summary edit: As the winter site manager of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, White was responsible for the selection, training, and health and safety of the forty-two- and forty-six-person crews. Few people on the planet can say they know what it feels like to walk in the unworldly, frigid winter darkness at the South Pole, but Wayne L. White can—having walked several thousand miles and never missing a day outside during his stay, regardless of the conditions. Amazon Reader Review: "This book is riveting, you will not want to put it down. I had no idea what it would be like to live and work at the South Pole. I also had no idea that I would want to know but as soon as I started reading COLD, I was hooked." Off the beaten path .... Wayne has managed to safely negotiate his way out of situations that many would consider dangerous. Danger due to the intense physical requirements of the terrain - and/or the disposition of the people he would encounter.  While at the South Pole, he mentions the UFO he [almost] saw... He also says someone asked him to tell him about the -- my phrasing "secret UFO base and stuff" going on there. We get into that in the second segment of the interview. Add paranormal, spooky and top that with an extreme oddity - a very unusual and curiously 'special' rock.    Connect with Wayne on Facebook: Link. Atheism, narrowly defined, is only concerned with the absence of gods. To build a foundation that grounds ethics and morality we need a positive worldview free from dogma and the supernatural. In this episode, we examine one worldview that goes “beyond atheism”: namely, religious naturalism. To discuss this idea, we are joined by Carol Wayne White, the Presidential Professor of Philosophy of Religion at Bucknell University, and author of the book, Black Lives and Sacred Humanity: Toward an African American Religious Naturalism. We learn about what religious naturalism is, whether it is compatible with atheism, and whether there is a place for “spirituality” in the worldview. We also ask whether a true atheist – or rather, a true religious naturalist – can believe in an afterlife or get married in a church. In the bonus section, available on Patreon exclusively for subscribers, we talk about the “harm principle,” Black Lives Matter, and whether anyone has ever asked to pray for her.Check out Carol's book, Black Lives and Sacred Humanity: Toward an African American Religious Naturalism: https://www.fordhampress.com/9780823269822/black-lives-and-sacred-humanity/For more on Carol, including a list of recent publications: https://www.bucknell.edu/fac-staff/carol-whiteFollow Nathan on Twitter: https://twitter.com/NathGAlexanderNathan's website: https://www.nathangalexander.com/If you find the podcast valuable and want to support it, check out our Patreon page, where you will also find bonus content: https://www.patreon.com/beyond_atheism You can also contribute by going to https://anchor.fm/beyond-atheism and clicking the “Support” button. In 2014, Drawn & Quarterly published Over Easy. It was a story that had been percolating for decades in cartoonist Mimi Pond’s mind, but life, family and the daunting task of actually sitting down to write it got in the way. By the time the cartoonist was ready to pitch the story, the publisher insisted on breaking it up into two volumes. In 2017, the second part, The Customer is Always Wrong, arrived, wrapping up the tale of her time as a waitress in her 20s. These days, Pond is in the midst of researching a new book, having been liberated by the act of actually getting a massive two-volume graphic memoir into the world. This time, however, she’s sought inspiration outside of herself, in spite of her own fascinating history that involves writing the pilot episode of The Simpsons, penning a best-selling book on Valley Girls and writing for the 80s children’s classic Pee-Wee’s Playhouse alongside her puppeteer husband Wayne White.

Join LA-based cartoonist Mimi Pond for the launch of her highly-anticipated graphic novel The Customer Is Always Wrong. Told in the same brash yet earnest style as her previous memoir Over Easy, The Customer is Always Wrong is the saga of a young naïve artist named Madge working in a restaurant of charming drunks, junkies, thieves, and creeps. Taking place in Oakland in the late seventies, Pond’s story details the trials and tribulations of Madge’s daily grind as a waitress at the Imperial Cafe. Mimi Pond is a cartoonist, illustrator, and writer. She has created comics for the Los Angeles Times, Seventeen magazine, National Lampoon, and many other publications. She has also written for television: her credits include the first full-length episode of The Simpsons, “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire”, and episodes for the television shows Designing Women andPee Wee’s Playhouse. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, the painter Wayne White. Wayne White was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Originally White built his reputation as a world-class illustrator, animator, puppeteer, cartoonist and art director in New York and Los Angeles. He is most well-known as the Emmy-award-winning set and puppet designer of the seminal and influential 1980s children’s TV show “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.” In the last 16 years, White’s reputation in the art world has been firmly established with his masterfully created word paintings and for his rollicking, site-specific installations. He lives in Los Angeles. Event date:  Saturday, August 12, 2017 - 5:00pm

On today's episode I talk to Wayne White. Born and raised in Chattanooga, Wayne is an artist, art director, illustrator, puppeteer, and much, much more. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University, Wayne traveled to New York City where he worked as an illustrator for the East Village Eye, New York Times, Raw Magazine, and the Village Voice. In 1986, Wayne became a designer for the hit television show Pee-wee’s Playhouse, and his work was awarded with three Emmys. After traveling to Los Angeles, Wayne continued to work in television and designed sets and characters for shows such as Shining Time Station, Beakman’s World, Riders In The Sky, and Bill & Willis. He also worked in the music video industry, winning Billboard and MTV Music Video Awards as an art director for seminal music videos including The Smashing Pumpkins' 'Tonight, Tonight' and Peter Gabriel's 'Big Time.' More recently, Wayne has had great success as a fine artist and has created paintings and public works that have been shown all over the world, and in 2009, Wayne's life and career were chronicled in an incredible 382-page monograph, edited by Todd Oldham. The Houston Midtown Chapter of The Society for Financial Awareness Presents MONEY MATTERS with Christopher Hensley

It's not a revelation to learn that any comedian offstage is a shy weirdo.  What's utterly revealing and totally fantastic about this film is seeing Gilbert Gottfried's marriage, which is a model of affection and good sense in the face of eccentricity.  Every couple should see this. Every marriage should be more like his.  This is the rare film where a look at a performer's private life is not what you expect at all, and also weirdly inspiring.  I loved this. Ira Glass Legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried has had quite the career. Rocketing to fame in the 1980s, he was thrust into the public consciousness almost immediately thanks to his brash personality, unique worldview, and off-kilter comic timing. Now, foul-mouthed and unapologetic after decades of flying solo in both his work and in his personal life, Gilbert has shockingly reinvented himself…as a family man.  Director Neil Berkeley's Gilbert reveals an unexpected side to the iconic comedian. The film peeks behind the larger-than-life persona at a more personal story about growing up in Brooklyn and becoming a husband and father late in life. Gottfried's singular outlook on life and his ability to bring humor to even the darkest situations has, at times, gotten him into trouble. Still he soldiers on, an expert craftsman at bringing his audience to the edge (and sometimes pushing them over). Gilbert strips the comedic character away to reveal the man behind it. Berkeley allows the audience an intimate — even vulnerable — view of Gottfried out of character. On today's show we talked with Director Neil Berkeley about his upcoming documentary Gilbert which will be showing on November 8th in Houston at The Alamo Drafthouse.    Neil Berkeley, Producer/ Director/ Writer Neil Berkeley is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and entrepreneur. His first feature film, Beauty Is Embarrassing, premiered at SXSW in 2012 and chronicles the life and times of the inspiring artist Wayne White. The film won several Best Documentary awards and was featured in PBS' Independent Lens in January of 2013. His second feature, Harmontown, premiered at SXSW in 2014 and follows self-destructive TV writer Dan Harmon on an emotional, cross-country journey of self-discovery.  He is currently in production on his fourth feature documentary, currently titled Death Is a Door. The film is the story of how American rock music became a lifestyle for many young Cubans in the late '80s. The decisions they made led to rampant police abuse combined with oppression from the government and eventually drove several hundred of them to self-inject with HIV.    Berkeley is also a successful commercial and promo director and has worked with brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac and Kraft Foods. He is the owner of BRKLY, a design based production company focused on developing marketing campaigns for network and cable television. The company has helped launch some of TV's most popular shows, including Brother vs. Brother, Scandal, Project Runway, Top Chef and many more.    To learn more about Gilbert and Neil Berkeley visit: www.gilbertmovie.com  To learn more about Ismael Fernandez visit: www.greengateplans.com To learn more about Houston Money Week visit: www.Houstonmoneyweek.org     http://www.cheatsheet.com/personal-finance/how-schools-can-improve-their-personal-finance-education.html/ Financial Advisor Magazine Articles: http://www.fa-mag.com/news/advisors-stay-the-course-amid-monday-s-market-drop-22864.html?section=3  http://www.fa-mag.com/news/on-it-s-80th-anniversaryadvisors-consider-social-security-s-impactfuture-22784.html?section=3 You can listen live by going to www.kpft.org and clicking on the HD3 tab. I remember when I was first on the periphery of what I guess we could call my screenwriting career and some Hollywood dickhead asked me “What’s your quote?” He meant “what’s your rate, your fee, your market value” — all of which was zero at the time. But what I thought he was after was more akin to “Play it again, Sam,” or “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a fuck” — you know, a movie quote. I mean that’s what people quote anyway — the movies. Except, I have a new quote — and it's not from the movies. In fact, I hate where I got it. It was the worst. It was a meme — you know, with an image of a sunset, the words hovering there, in all caps, over the shimmering sea as if belched directly from God, like some Wayne White word painting. It reads: “It's not too late to be what you might have been.” First off, fuck you, meme. And you too, God. And Wayne White -- okay, you get a pass, but... Fuck you to the person who didn’t credit the quote’s author, George Eliot (I looked it up). Which became its own wormhole, since everything I know about Eliot fits in two data points: He was a she. Or, rather, she used a male nom de plume because women writers weren’t taken seriously in the 19th century. She is not George Sand, who was also a 19th century writer and used her pseudonym for the same reasons. Also, names were just plain complicated for her, as she once wrote: "My name is not Marie-Aurore de Saxe, Marquise of Dudevant, as several of my biographers have asserted, but Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin.” And then she probably added, “Screw it, call me ‘George.’” So, George Eliot writes “It's not too late to be what you might have been” and a century and a half later, Rebecca Mead, in a New Yorker essay titled Middlemarch and Me tries to find the origin of the quotation, which she first read on a refrigerator magnet. Then Mead observes, “the sentence didn’t sound to me like anything George Eliot would say” and some literary sleuthing ensues. Spoiler alert — it’s made up. Probably by a refrigerator magnet scribe, who hopefully took her own advice and got out of the magnet business. Which is good advice. It's not too late to be what you might have been. What did you want to be? I wanted to be many things, too many things, surely. But the unified field theory always had art in the equation. I’m not entirely sure how that came to feel so far away until recently but I think it went like this: Art led to entertainment, which led to media, which will probably lead to memes if I’m not careful. I think I caught myself just in time, hence this public psychic striptease I’ve been conducting as I peel away a lifetime’s accumulated bullshit and become what I might have been. And if you come across a Hollywood dickhead, tell him what happened to me, then tell him that the rights are tied up in with a refrigerator magnet. Then run far, far away and hide — maybe change your name to George? — and then become what you might have been. It’s not too late. Theme: Shannon Ferguson Piano: Kevin MacLeod

Over Easy (Drawn & Quarterly) Artist and Los Angeles resident, Mimi Pond comes to Skylight Books with her sort-of memoir Over Easy, a brilliant portrayal of a familiar coming-of-age story. After being denied financial aid to cover her last year of art school, Margaret finds salvation from the straightlaced world of college and the earnestness of both hippies and punks in the wisecracking, fast-talking, drug-taking group she encounters at the Imperial Cafe, where she makes the transformation from Margaret to Madge. At first she mimics these new and exotic grown-up friends, trying on the guise of adulthood with some awkward but funny stumbles. Gradually she realizes that the adults she looks up to are a mess of contradictions, misplaced artistic ambitions, sexual confusion, dependencies, and addictions. Over Easy is equal parts time capsule of late 1970s life in California--with its deadheads, punks, disco rollers, casual sex, and drug use--and bildungsroman of a young woman who grows from a naive, sexually inexperienced art-school dropout into a self-aware, self-confident artist. Mimi Pond's chatty, slyly observant anecdotes create a compelling portrait of a distinct moment in time. Over Easy is an immediate, limber, and precise semi-memoir narrated with an eye for the humor in every situation. Praise for Over Easy: "As funny and warm-hearted as a memoir about a bunch of punks, drug dealers, hippies, and art school dropouts screwing in the 1970s can get. Mimi Pond's coming-of-age graphic novel, "Over Easy", is a delicious charmer." --Jami Attenberg, author of The Middlesteins Mimi Pond is a cartoonist, illustrator, and writer. She has created comics for the Los Angeles Times, Seventeen Magazine, National Lampoon, and many other publications too numerous to mention, and has written and illustrated five humor books.
