Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things Vancouver Whitecaps ahead of the start of their 2024 MLS season. To begin, they take a look at the latest news out of Whitecaps land, as a few key 2023 pieces departed for new clubs in Richie Laryea, who joined Toronto FC, and Junior Hoilett, who joined Aberdeen. Meanwhile, closer to home, the 'Caps made one move ahead of the roster compliance deadline this weekend, signing veteran goalkeeper Joe Bendik as their third-string goalkeeper. Rounding off the news section, they then take a look at the 2024 Canadian Championship draw, which occurred this week, where the Whitecaps learned their path towards a potential threepeat in that competition, with the potential for a first-ever Greater Vancouver derby potentially in the cards. Finally, they take a look back at what they learned from the Whitecaps Concacaf Champions Cup tie with Tigres, in which the Whitecaps fell 4-1 across both legs, a score that probably flattered Tigres in the end. From there, they dive into a jam-packed second half of the show, in which they previewed the Whitecaps 2024 season, looking at the team's outlook, rating their offseason and predict how they'll do in the three competitions they have remaining this year. Can the 'Caps finish top 3 in the West? Can they win another Canadian Championship? Is this the year they get over the hump in the playoffs? What's the best and worst case scenario? They dive into all of those big questions, and much more, to help preview what should be one of the biggest 'Caps seasons since they've come into MLS. Make sure to check out The Third Sub Podcast on Twitter, @thirdsubpod, as well as on Instagram, @the3rdsub_.

Todd also gives his thoughts on Saturday nights defeat to LA Galaxy, in a game that the Galaxy dominated from start to finish. Phil Wheddon is the only goalkeeper coach to have coached for both the US Men's and Women's National Teams, and now he has joined Philadelphia Union's first team as the goalkeeper coach. Last season, Wheddon took over as Philadelphia Union II's goalkeeping coach, helping to develop now — NCAA National Champion Tomas Romero and Matt Freese. The veteran coach of three FIFA World Cups also brings 11 years of experience as the women's soccer head coach at Syracuse and two Olympic Gold Medals to his new role. Wheddon now handles the Philadelphia Union goalkeepers and looks to take Andre Blake's game to the next level while helping Joe Bendik and Matt Freese develop into the kind of space-controlling backstops that Ernst Tanner and Jim Curtin value in the Union's aggressive system. Wheddon is always up to the task: He has previous worked with Tim Howard, Hope Solo, Kasey Keller, and Brianna Scurry, perhaps the four faces that would sit atop United States soccer's goalkeeping Mount Rushmore.
The weather is cooling quickly, and the soccer is starting to give off playoff vibes. The Union had a shot at the first silverware in club history … and fell short in Columbus. The Crew’s stars are back, and they’re feeling it. Meanwhile, pressure is on Philly (and Joe Bendik) to hold Toronto at bay on Decision Day presented by AT&T. Five teams are still battling for two remaining playoff spots in the East, it four teams for two spots in the West. Orlando City did the improbable by going into Red Bull Arena and taking all three points from last year’s Supporters’ Shield winners. We’re breaking down the Lions’ 1-0 win over the Red Bulls and the solid game plan that allowed them to do so. Plus, our Man of the Match picks. We also discuss the Pride’s preseason loss at North Carolina and touch on the upcoming OCB opener on Saturday at Montverde Academy. Brian Rowe jumps on with us and talks about his arrival in Orlando, how he doesn’t really think about trying to replace a popular player like Joe Bendik, what song he sang in front of the whole team during the preseason trip to Bradenton, and much more. We apologize for a few minor audio glitches as the entire week was plagued with more technical gremlins than we’re used to, and we thank Brian for being a gracious guest and accommodating us. After the interview, we answer listener mail, touch on the USMNT’s trip to Orlando (and also to Houston), and we give you our key match-ups and score predictions for Sunday’s match against D.C. United. We’re not yet buying in this season and we expect a difficult night against unbeaten D.C. If there’s something you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Here’s how show No. 155 shook out: 0:16 - The Lions finally get their first 2019 win, the Pride get swatted by the Courage, and OCB is getting ready to host Tucson. 34:15 - Brian Rowe drops in and discusses a big night against the Red Bulls and the inspirational act of getting to know Mason Stajduhar (and much more). 49:23 - Our mailbag brings up stadium naming rights again and I’m here for it. Atlanta United quickly rebounded from their midweek loss against Sporting Kansas City by defeating Orlando City 2-1 Sunday night in the Sunshine State(it was raining during the match, but whatever). It didn’t take very long for Atlanta to find the back of the net, as they took an early 1-0 lead after Greg Garza drew a penalty and was pulled down in the box by Cristian Higuita. Josef Martinez stepped up to take it and converted in the 10th minute after his feint run-up caught Joe Bendik guessing the wrong way. The goal was Martinez’s eighth of the season. Things got even better for the Five Stripes, as Greg Garza’s cross into the box found Ezequiel Barco, whose shot kissed the bottom of the crossbar and found the back of the net in the 31st minute. Alec Kann, who was returning from a knee injury and had yet to play for Atlanta this season, stepped up big in the absence of suspended Brad Guzan with his only save of the first half coming in the 44th minute. The good guys went into the break with a 2-0 lead. Kann was called upon once again early in the second half, as Justin Meram’s left-footed attempt from the near post in the 52nd minute led to the Decatur native’s second important save of the match. However, a bit of misfortune led to Orlando City’s first goal of the night, as Kann saved Will Johnson’s initial shot in the 57th minute, but a combination of his inability to punch the ball out of the box and Miles Robinson’s missed attempt to clear it led to an easy finish for Meram. Tito Villalba nearly restored the two-goal lead in the 77th minute, but Bendik saved his shot on the 1-on-1 opportunity. At the end of the day, the two goals were all Atlanta needed to win a massive Eastern Conference matchup. Overall, it was impressive to see the team continue to find ways to get three points on the road, as AU’s winning streak away from home now extends to four. Atlanta’s next challenge comes Sunday, May 20 against the New York Red Bulls at 7 p.m. in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We’re back to talk about Orlando City’s third straight victory and no, that isn’t a typo. The Lions went into Philadelphia and brought back three points to the City Beautiful but they did not — I repeat, did not — bring me any cheesesteaks. That’s OK, I’d rather have the points. Dom Dwyer and Chris Mueller did the damage on the scoreboard and Joe Bendik stood tall in goal to keep the clean sheet. Speaking of Bendik, he’s our guest this week. We chatted Joe up about playing with so many new defenders, his leadership role with the team, the chemistry and energy of the 2018 Lions, his favorite save, and a lot more. We also discuss the Pride’s loss at Portland and the huge loss Thorns owner Merritt Paulson took on social media this week. Plus, our listener questions in our Ask The Mane Land PawedCast mailbag, and and our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City’s match Saturday night against the San Jose Earthquakes. If there’s something you want us to address on our next show, just tweet it to us @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Here’s the breakdown for show No. 121: 0:12- Three consecutive wins? Who are these Lions? We’re breaking down the game and giving you our Man of the Match picks, plus the Pride, the Leroux-Paulson squabble, and more. 39:53- Joe Bendik chillaxed with us for a bit and gave us the unique perspective of Orlando City and the game of soccer that only a goalkeeper can. 58:38- The #AskTMLPC mailbag and our laughable predictions for the Lions vs. the Quakes. Orlando City has used one goalkeeper the last two seasons in MLS play but Joe Bendik isn’t the team’s only backstopper. We’ve got Josh Saunders with us, as the Lions’ veteran backup stopped by to talk to us about a whole host of interesting topics, but my favorite was his description of what it’s like as a goalkeeper to play at Yankee Stadium. Big thanks to Josh, who was an interesting interview. We also have Orlando City-Atlanta United to break down and we’ll all be sad to see the end of Bobby Dodd Stadium’s time in MLS. It has such a storied history in our league! All kidding aside, it was a hard-fought 1-1 draw and we’re breaking it down and giving you our Man of the Match picks. We’re also talking OCB at Charleston, the Tournament of Nations and all the Orlando Pride players’ contributions, the All-Star Game, and more. Plus, #AskTMLPC, our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando at Montreal Impact, and more. Here’s how the show unfolded: 0:12- We’re really sick of Hector Villalba, but we break down the game at Bobby Dodd Stadium anyway, plus our Man of the Match, OCB at Charleston, the USWNT, and more. 38:08- Josh Saunders joins us and tells us about playing for Jason Kreis and with Kaká, what Yankee Stadium is like from the on-field view, what he’s learned from being at Orlando City and several other topics. 53:12- #AskTMLPC and our key match-ups and predictions for Orlando’s trip to the Great White North to face the Impact, plus a look at what’s coming up. Are you watching the games or just looking at the stats? David's catchphrase is taking off! The guys are definitely talking about (and watching) the games, starting with Friday night lights in Toronto where the best player in the league – Alberth Elis, duh ;) – is hoping to put on a show against the upstart Dynamo. Yes, that'd be Sebastian Giovinco, who Atlanta United captain Michael Parkhurst gives the nod as MLS's best. Who else does Parkhurst hating matching up against? What's life like with an expansion team firing on all cylinders on and off the field? Just how cushy is that new training complex? You won't want to miss this all-encompassing interview from ATL. There are plenty more juicy MLS storylines to talk about, too. The guys start with Dax McCarty's return to Red Bull Arena, celebrate Mauro Diaz's cameo on the training field and Portland's proposed stadium expansion, wonder what's up in Columbus as Gregg Berhalter and Kekuta Manneh go back and forth in the media and finally call the LA Times Kevin Baxter to diagnose what ails the Galaxy. As always, the Hot-Take Hotline is chock full of gems, starting with a jingle from none other than Alexi Lalas. There are more jingles where that came from, a Joe Bendik-to-USMNT flame job, LA Galaxy gritching and some insight into Dax's return from Bill Carroll in Section 132. Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio!
We’re totally getting used to all this winning. Orlando City made it three in a row and five of the first six by going up to Yankee Stadium and beating David Villa and company, 2-1. We are here to dissect that game and give you our Man of the Match picks. We also discussed the Pride’s 1-1 draw vs. Washington Spirit (#MartaWatch), and OCB’s 2-0 win at Bethlehem Steel FC. But the big reason you’re here this week is our exclusive interview with Giles Barnes. The Jamaican international has been a dogged defender and a welcome addition to the attack since joining Orlando City from Vancouver Whitecaps just prior to the season. Giles talks about how the Lions have gone from being a team to a family and how hungry all the guys are this year. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t try to play soothsayer and give you our picks for the key match-ups and final score of OCSC’s upcoming match-up against the Colorado Rapids. The magic happened as such: 0:12- Cyle Larin continues to clobber New York teams, Joe Bendik dazzles with his late stop, OCSC player salaries, Marta debuts, Earl Edwards Jr. might be a mutant (in a good way), and much more. 25:16- Giles Barnes climbs aboard our little starship and we’re headed for the skies as we discuss Orlando City Stadium, staying hungry, playing for Jason Kreis and his teammates, getting Kaká back soon, and what to expect against the Rapids. 38:51- Our key match-ups and score predictions for the visiting Tim Howard-less Rapids of Colorado. Stop by next week as we recap the Colorado match and look ahead to the road trip to Houston. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We don’t have a game to break down this week because of Mother Nature, but to make up for it, we’re bringing you an extra guest! Former Orlando City goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo — now the club’s sideline analyst and community ambassador — joins us to discuss his new roles with the club, his time with the Lions, and his time in Jacksonville. And we also welcome Eugene Rupinski from The Brotherly Game to give us the Philadelphia perspective on the Lions vs. the Union this Saturday. We may not have a game to recap, but we sure do have a lot of news. Orlando City goalkeeper Joe Bendik extended his contract through 2020, Seb Hines underwent knee surgery, the Orlando Pride opened preseason camp and might sign Brazilian superstar Marta, OCB got a new Brazilian defender from the club’s partnership with Atletico Paranaense, and we discuss the expansion battle between the United clubs from Minnesota and Atlanta. After Miguel talks to us about his gig and what it was like to face his old Orlando City teammates, Eugene jumped on and told us a bit about this year’s edition of the Union and what we can expect for Saturday. Spoiler: the Union are still a pretty good soccer team. And of course, we can’t possibly sign off without our key match-ups and final predictions, which you absolutely shouldn’t use as a basis for any wagering. Here’s the show this week: 0:13- Orlando City gets a snow day, Bendik gets a new deal, Hines gets his knee repaired, Pride get started, OCB gets a defender, and Minnesota gets a new MLS record it probably didn’t want. 37:46- Miguel Gallardo checks in with us and tells us what he’ll be doing this season for the club. He also talks about what we might see this weekend. 53:19- Eugene Rupinski gives us the 411 on the Union so far this season. 1:06:12- Key match-ups and predictions! Learn more about your ad choices. Orlando City opened the season in style, defeating fellow 2015 MLS expansion club New York City FC in the cozy confines of the club’s gorgeous new Purple Palace. We’re here to talk about the game in great detail, from the job Joe Bendik did in goal, to the new-look back line — with a midfielder at right back, no less — to newcomer Giles Barnes’ perfectly placed back-post cross, to Cyle Larin’s beautiful header, to Kaká’s injury, and more. But before all that, we gush at length about the stadium itself and I give a full report of my view and experience in the safe standing section where The Wall lives, breathes, and pulsates throughout the game. We also discussed the captain’s hamstring ouchie and how the club will fare without No. 10 for at least the next six weeks. And hey, the Orlando Pride start their preseason in just a few days. We’re pleased to bring you our interview with Pride forward Sarah Hagen, who enters her second season with the club. Sarah was gracious with her time, talking about everything from the new stadium, the Kids vs. Pros exhibition, NWSL players leaving to play in Europe, the upcoming Pride season, and more. And we look ahead to the New England Revolution this Saturday, with our key match-ups and final score predictions, which are identical and probably quite wrong. Here’s the show rundown: 0:11- That. Stadium. We’ve got nothing but good things to say about Orlando City Stadium, plus a glorious opening day and why I never thought New York City would score. 41:26- Sarah Hagen stops by and talks about her off-season, the upcoming Pride campaign, having teammate Alex Morgan start the season in France, and several other topics. 55:18- Our key match-ups and score predictions for Saturday’s battle in the cold against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. Without the pressure of a playoff race, Jason Kreis was able to freely take a look at his young fullbacks and change the formation of the team. It worked. Orlando City went into Philadelphia and came away with a 2-0 victory over the Union, collecting just the club's third road victory of the year. Carlos Rivas and Julio Baptista provided the offense and Joe Bendik and his back line took care of the clean sheet. We break that down for you in the absence of our usual host (sick this week), with Austin and Andrew taking control of the cast this week. The Lions will close out the season this Sunday at Camping World Stadium against D.C. United, and we looked ahead to that 2016 finale on the broadcast as well. In addition, Orlando City will host an alumni game with some ex-USL Lions as well as some players from former pro soccer teams from Orlando suiting up against ex-Rowdies. Here's how it happened: 0:00- Recapping the win at Philly, a detailed discussion of Carlos Rivas and Orlando's Designated Player slots. 17:30- Rafael Ramos and Mikey Ambrose played fullback on Sunday. We take a look at the two young fullbacks. 23:00- Throwback Day and the Orlando City Alumni Game. 31:00- A look ahead to D.C. United in the season finale. They're a dangerous team and we discuss why. Also, our score predictions! We'll be back next week to wrap up the season-ending match against D.C. and look ahead to the long, dark off-season. Learn more about your ad choices. With nearly ten added minutes to the end of the match, referee Ismail Elfath chose to decide the result right at the end on a dubious foul by Drew Moor on Julio Baptista. Earlier in the half, Jordan Hamilton had similar contact by Joe Bendik for a non-call and TFC supporters are right to feel aggrieved. It is another poor and inconsistent display by PRO referees to decide all three points. Aside from the controversy, there were several storylines, such as: Clint Irwin v. Joe Bendik, Cyle Larin v. Jordan Hamilton, as well as a solid performance from Jonathan Osorio.
Well, we took a week off during Copa America but the Mane Land PawedCast is back with a vengeance. We've got a show clocking in at a smidge over an hour long where we talked about Copa, Euro 2016, the resurgence of Orlando City B, the road woes of the Orlando Pride and a whole lot more. We were also fortunate enough to talk to Orlando City midfielder Servando Carrasco. Servando tells us why he loves playing defensive midfield, even if it isn't the most glamorous position on the soccer field, as well as who some of his heroes were that influenced his fondness for the position. He also weighs in on the Copa break, this week's win over Jacksonville Armada FC in the U.S. Open Cup, and Saturday's opponents, the San Jose Earthquakes. And no PawedCast would be complete without our key match-ups and laughably wrong predictions for the game. All of this entertainment and information comes your way for the low, low cost of absolutely nothing. Enjoy! Here's how the sausage was made: 0:13- Michael and Andrew talk about international soccer, why the U.S. Open Cup isn't more popular, the job Anthony Pulis is doing with OCB and the Pride struggling to score on the road. 53:08- Servando Carrasco jumps on and he's well worth the wait. The Orlando City midfielder talks about doing trick shots with Brek Shea and Joe Bendik, how much nicer it is to live in the same city as your wife, what's great about defensive midfield and a lot more. 1:08:28- Breaking down the Earthquakes and prediction time! That's all for this week. We'll be back to wrap up San Jose and look ahead to Toronto FC. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It has been scientifically proven that losing is much worse than winning or even tying. Yet, here we are with Orlando City on a 0-3-3 skid in the last six matches and we may have (hopefully) seen the nadir with Sunday's abysmal performance at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City. Despite a 2-1 score line, the Lions were completely pummeled by Sporting Kansas City, yielding 34 shots and failing to record even one shot on goal. But, we're here to talk you down from the ledge and to try to make sense of what we saw on Sunday. Mostly we saw a lot of Joe Bendik making saves. There were defensive problems, a lack of any attacking bite, and almost no link between the levels in the formation. We remain hopeful that the end of this skid is in sight. On the other hand, the Pride is now a perfect 3-0 at home, outscoring opponents 6-1 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Western New York Flash at Camping World Stadium on Saturday. We'll review that game and Pride midfielder/forward Jasmyne Spencer stops by to talk about the fans, the winning, the road losses, and much more. Big thanks to Spencer, who has been one of the real bright spots for the Pride this season. We also answer listener questions in our Ask The Mane Land segment, and give you our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City vs. Montreal Impact. Here's the running order: 0:13- Let's talk about an ugly, ugly game and then never speak of it again. Let's also talk about the Pride and Alex Morgan's wondergoal. 29:40- Jasmyne Spencer stops by to tell us all about Pride supporters, winning at home against her former club and the looming four-game road swing. 45:04- Ask TML wants to know about Nocerino, plus our key match-ups and predictions for Saturday. After a week off due to my inconvenient gallbladder removal surgery, we are back -- and in a big way. Episode 41 of the PawedCast celebrates the opening of Orlando Pride's preseason training camp with an exclusive interview with midfielder and England international Lianne Sanderson. Lianne was kind enough to take time out of her busy preseason to discuss the early days of the club's inaugural NWSL camp, her role with the team, how important the quality of life is in determining where she plays soccer, and much more. The Pride is in good hands with leaders like her. But, since we missed last week, there's plenty for us to talk about. We break down the good, bad, and ugly about both the Real Salt Lake and Chicago Fire games for Orlando City, and we give you our Man of the Match for both. In a weird cosmic coincidence, we were unanimous in our choice for both matches. Plus, we discuss the early season performances of Antonio Nocerino, Kevin Molino, the Orlando City back line and more. And of course, we cannot leave without giving you the key match-ups and score predictions for Friday's trip to Yankee Stadium to take on New York City FC. Here's how the show went down: 0:12- Two games, two draws, two Cyle Larin goals. What went right and wrong and how much blame should be heaped on Seb Hines or Joe Bendik? Plus, David Accam is really, really fast. 33:13- Lianne Sanderson joins us and we get to know one of Orlando Pride's veteran players. 49:25- Our key match-ups for Friday night's game between OCSC and NYCFC, including our laughably wrong score predictions. That's it for another week. We'll be back to break down the New York City match and look ahead to Portland. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On this weeks #COYR Podcast Devang & Gareth discuss TFC vs. Orlando City and chat with Joe Bendik.
TFC almost played the spoiler, but a Chicago Fire loss saw Montreal squeak into the playoffs despite Toronto defeating them 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. It was a rare organized and efficient performance from the Reds as they thoroughly dominated Montreal more most of the ninety minutes. Even when Montreal were able to create solid chances, Joe Bendik was there to shut the door. The season is done and it's all looking back on the year and putting it all into perspective heading towards 2014.
The Reds put in what has come to be expected as they drew 1-1 with the Chicago Fire and while Joe Bendik and the defence looked good, the attack lacked vision and quality finishing. It will go down as another forgettable result in 2013 as Toronto simply don't have the players, but also have not instilled any kind of creative approach that can unlock opposition. With the season winding down, and little to get excited about on the pitch, it's going through the motions to get a step closer to 2014.
Toronto FC once again miss out on glory as a Federico Higuain brace sinks the Reds who've only lifted the trophy once in seven years. It was a disappointing performance considering the displays of the last month and few players stood out, most notably Joe Bendik who was called on time and time again to keep the score respectable. The arrival of Maximiliano Urruti did not open a floodgate of goals as TFC's offensive approach is still conservative and timid at best. It will take much more than a few South American signings to get Toronto's attack looking anything dangerous through the rest of the season.
Toronto FC, once again, cannot fend off a late surge from opposition as an extra time goal levels the score and the Reds leave Philadelphia with just one point in a 1-1 draw. There is no avoiding a discussion on the referee, however, his performance clouds TFC's performance, that on this day truthfully was not very good. Aside from a few players, most notably Joe Bendik, Toronto still struggle to effectively attack and in hindsight a point is a good result for the team moving forward.
