Editor's note: Beacon was created in 1913 from Matteawan and Fishkill Landing. 150 Years Ago (October 1874) A son of W.H. Rogers threw a ball at Fishkill Landing that hit Alex Mohurter as he drove past. Mohurter stopped his wagon, climbed out and struck the boy with his whip. The boy's father sued for assault, but a jury found no cause for action. A man who said he was a boatman brought a 13-year-old girl named Mary Jane Clark to John Flannery's hotel at Fishkill Landing and paid for her room and breakfast. The girl said her mother lived in Rondout. The next morning, Flannery telegraphed Rondout and put the girl on the 12:55 p.m. train. The Fishkill Landing Machine Works cut operations back to eight hours a day. While students at the Matteawan Free School were playing "snap the whip," a girl named Tiee had her arm broken. Two men from Newburgh were sentenced to six months in prison for robbing merchant A.P. Geenug at Fishkill Landing. They had asked him to show them shirts, and when he turned, one hit him in the head with a slug shot, knocking him senseless. A Fishkill Landing hotel badly damaged by fire was sold at auction for $3,150 [$87,000] to Lewis Tompkins of the Dutchess Hat Works. 125 Years Ago (October 1899) The Tiger football team of Fishkill Landing announced it would play any squad in Dutchess, Putnam or Orange counties whose players averaged 125 pounds. The body of Andrew Mihalov, a native of Hungary, was found on the New York Central tracks a mile north of Fishkill Landing. His neck and back were broken, but the bottle of whiskey in his pocket was intact. An appeals court heard a dispute over the late Thomas Aldridge's brickyard property at Dutchess Junction, valued at $250,000 [$9.5 million], that was to be sold and the proceeds divided when his widow died. A son, William, died before his mother, and the question was whether his 1/8th share passed to his children. The court ruled it did. A police officer shot Harry Owen of Matteawan, who worked as a railroad towerman in Hastings, by mistake. After a holdup, officers had been assigned to watch for the suspects near the tracks. Shortly after 9 p.m., as Owen ran toward the station to catch a train home, he heard a cry, "Hold up your hands!" from behind. Assuming it was highwaymen, he ran faster. An officer fired, striking Owen in the cheek near his ear. Doctors said the bullet missed killing him by a 1/16th of an inch. Rebecca Case, 35, had been missing from her home on Davis Street in Matteawan since Sept. 1, although her husband believed his father-in-law, Franklin Mitchell, a jeweler in Newburgh, knew her whereabouts. Nola Pauline "Polly" Gordon of Matteawan, a local author and poet, published an unusual notice in the local papers announcing that her two-week-old engagement to Harry Theall of Fishkill Landing had ended. The notice was a public letter to his mother, whom she had never met. "Mr. Theall scarcely reaches my standard in affinity socially, or as a gentleman of fine, true principles," she wrote. Gordon told a reporter from the New York Evening Journal that she had "given up my literary work because Mr. Theall wished it, but now I shall devote much time to it." Two weeks later, the gossip page of the Evening Journal reported that Gordon had cornered her cousin, James Langman, at a stationery store because he had insulted her the evening before. According to its account, Gordon struck him with a horsewhip she had hidden beneath her overcoat. Because Langman grabbed her arm to stop the attack, she filed a criminal complaint that he had assaulted her. The details differed in a story the next day in the New York Journal and Advertiser. It reported she told Langman: "I'm not going to be scandalized by you or anybody like you." The version in The World did not mention a whip, only mutual slaps. The New York Herald said the incident involved a revolver in a tobacco store and that Gordon told Langman, "You are no gentleman" before dropping the gun, which fir...

In the realm of leadership, there exists no exclusive license to guide. Instead, a leader's purpose lies in constructing an environment that fosters trust, hope, stability, and compassion. Our present discourse centers around the concept of bottom-up leadership, featuring the insights of Dr. John Flannery from the esteemed University Health Network in Toronto.  Dr. John Flannery has been a specialist in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and physician leader for almost 30 years.  His area of clinical specialty has included the entire gamut of all the physical rehab domains including amputee, burn, electro-diagnostic medicine, as well as all of the neurologic rehabilitation fields. He was Residency Program Director at U of T for over 10 years as well as the lead for the Specialty Committee at the Royal College for four of those years.  In 2013, he was selected by peers and administrators in the GTA as one of 30 top Toronto Docs; and profiled in Toronto Life magazine (first and only time in Toronto Life magazine history) for his compassionate care and leadership in Rehab. Currently, in his leadership role in the RPS Program, at University Health Network, his main areas of focus include educational system level endeavors. In this episode Dr. Flannery talks about how his focus on patient care helps him to be a better leader, role model and mentor because that is the goal that unifies them all. His approach is to focus on success on outcomes for the ultimate user (client, patient, student, constituent, etc.), and that everyone shares the same goal and this determines our true measures of success as a team. Dr. Flannery also shares the tools he uses everyday such as Strengths Based Leadership and the Logical Levels. Enjoy!

Eppersode Eppersode, episode number three recorded on zoom in a row. Most of my episodes of late had been recorded on the motive app while I was walking.  So I'm making an effort to record on Zoom. So a perhaps I can start getting these these episodes up on the YouTube channel and people can look and smile and see my Robert Plant locks.  I just showered and so so little they're a little flat right now. Go to YouTube and you can watch my look at my see my flat locks. My narcissistic go and dairy about my Robert Plant hair.Mischa Zvegintzov Anyway, this is all I just am. I'm in repurpose content mode. I'm really like yeah, I just got to be start. I've got all this content, it's time to start finding the WHO to help me distribute it out there. And so, so started doing episodes on YouTube. Wow, that's not the point of this episode.Mischa Zvegintzov The point of this episode is I wanted to tell you about I an idea that I've got and and that probably won't be done by the time this episode comes out. However, here's the idea. So along with everything that I do. All this now repurposing content that hopefully I'm in full effect with. by the time you see this.  Is helping people create their webinars, long form sales videos, what I call my winfomercial.  I'm going to interview people a certain way. So it'll be a super compelling interview that sells their goods and services. It's gonna be awesome, super informational, and super fun. The Winfomercial. Kinda like, kind of like on the radio, my friend who I just referenced on the previous episode, Glenn Lebar. Hopefully, Glen, you'll let me interview you. But you know, that's what they're doing, man. They're under the it doesn't matter.Mischa Zvegintzov Say my idea. So when you're doing... when people are selling from stage and selling from camera, or selling on webinars or selling in interviews.  A lot of times what they're doing is they are using trial closes. I was just looking up on my if you're watching this, I was looking up on my board. I've got trial closes written down. And then I also have future paces, future pacing written down. So trial closes are where you start getting people to nod their head. Oh, yeah, yeah, yes, yes. Yes. or No? Or, or you're getting agreement or? So. That's really cool, right? Like, as you're listening to this episode, you know, and and saying, Hey, that's, wouldn't it be cool to imagine if... of course now, none of the trial closes are coming to my head. But there's lots of trial closes, but you basically are, are getting people used to saying yes, and get it helps build excitement, and they're shaking their head nodding their head, yes or no.  You can also use those and then future paths to pacing as you're painting the picture of how things are going to be in the future. So my friend John Flannery, who hopefully I'm going to be able to interview is really good at the referral process. So he does sales training, trainings for for teams.  For, you know, 50 60 person sales teams.  So it could be divisions or small companies or divisions of medium sized companies. But anyhow, imagine if you had his scripts, right? His his referrals, that'd be really cool, right? Like, could you see yourself using those scripts? Yeah, me too, and making more money. Right? Like, imagine having the script in your hand, that if you used it, you knew you would make an extra.... you would increase your business by 25% for the year.Mischa Zvegintzov How cool is that!  It's cool, right? Something you'd want to have? You're in your hands, right? And then imagine, like, how would your relationships in your family be if you had an extra 25% income? So if you're making 200,000 a year, all of a sudden you've got an extra. What is that? 75,000 or 50,000. To play with? Like, is that more vacations with your family? Is that more date nights? Get a couple cool things, shiny objects. Maybe your wife likes jewelry, you get her a cool ring. She thinks you're awesome. I don't know. Get your kid a nicer car, your teenager. Waylon and Cooper, both my kids. My sons, who at the time of this recording are 18 and 20. I give them the raggedy old truck. But perhaps if I'd had used the referral scripts I could have gotten em shiny new trucks. They'd have loved me even more.Mischa Zvegintzov That's future pacing. Cool, right? Could you see yourself using that? Yeah. That's trial closes. So make cards.  I'm gonna make a card deck, a trial close card deck. And then a future pacing card deck. And then also all the other sales skills that go around from that go that go along with you know, selling this from stage. Creating your Table Rush. Like create the card decks to support that. So you can practice all the time. So that as I'm doing my episode, I've got my card deck. And I'm like, oh, yeah, try this trial close.  Try this trial close. That's cool, right? Can you see what I'm saying? Like, how fun is that? That actually sounds like fun, right? Like, truly, if you have that card deck and you could practice it, or, you know, just in your daily life on the phone. You could practice the trial closes on your wife, your kids, your husband, your co workers.  The police if you're speeding. Anyway, that's my idea. And then turn that into a lead magnet and offer it up. Sell them and see if I can drive some leads, create some excitement, and then help people sell. And lead them to my courses which are yet to be created but percolating in my mind. Right God? right universe?Mischa Zvegintzov Oh my gosh. I so want things to happen faster sometimes. And sometimes they just don't.  Sometimes it takes a while to percolate. Some people get to go faster. Some people got to go slower. Anyway. Save that for the next episode.  Love to all look for my card decks. Look for my card tags. Perhaps by the time this episode comes out, there'll b

John Flannery was such a fun interview; he has this dry wit which shines through in his story telling and it continually has me laughing.  I don't know, John is just a good man.  He willingly talks about his highs and his lows, the joys and the tears, and his struggles and his breakthroughs.  He is a family man to the core, stands up for what he believes in, and has the job of his dreams.  We talk family, life, death and everything in between.Show notes: When I become Mayor!  One of the first thing I'm gonna do is take back our streets!  I catch John when he just got done playing tennis…  Who the hell plays tennis?  Vulnerable.  John has a dry wit and it shines in his story telling.  John Flannery likes to control outcomes.  My feelings are back.  For a long time I didn't have them.  I feel everything today and it's a blessing and a growing opportunity.  “I feel and think about a lot of different things and I am grateful to have friends like you who help me to decipher if I can make an impact or not”.   He is open to hearing and getting the answer he does not want.“The truth will set you free…”  “It will put your balls in a vice script first!”The ability to discern what to do or not.  Prayer and meditation is an option.  John puts his money where his mouth his - One day I'm walking by a grocery store and I see dude hanging out next to a Trump booth with a sign - and it was John - and the sign says “Anyone but him”.  And the peace, love, and learning that came out of this experience is awesome.  17 years ago he had to change, his wife was gonna leave with their kids, and by the grace of god he had had enough.  He had a spiritual experience he had to change…“I've never had a (spiritual experience) where I wasn't doing something with or for somebody else.”  “I've never been filling Johns agenda out and had a spiritual experience!”Can't we just be fucking nice to each other?  Even if we don't agree with each other…Would you like to get punched in the face. His sign experience showed that 95% of the people are down for peaceful of dialog…  John Flannery is in sales and is a sales trainer and he loves what he does for work and he loves how he gets to be of service in his job.  He gets to live his calling.  He believes in the balance of the three legs of the stool; health, wealth, and relationships.John, cursed me when I first told him to think about the fact that we are all going to die…  Now it is one of his favorite things.  John is a family man to the core, he loves the family structure, and thrives it…  A question I have for him, “How hard is it to see a child seemingly having problems?”  A quote he heard “You're as happy as your most unsettled kid”.  And John does not like that…  Johns parents died when he was young; his mom when he's 14, dad when 19…  We get to reflect on that.  Perhaps that is what bumps him on his path of self destructive behaviors that almost push his family away.We took about the transition to starting his business Flannery Sales Systems.  His mentor at the time gives him his phd in buyer behavior, which is what selling is all about.  “Understanding what is important to the buyer.”  I was very unsure of the outcomes but I had to take the action.   His wife is integral in his leap of faith to start his business.  The two sides of John, the foot loose and fancy free John and now we have the buttoned down John Flannery with Flannery Sales Systems; where those clash beauty comes out.  They come together in his business where he gets to travel.  The covid has put a damper on that.  But he is good at the travel in his business. It's the connection of the people he meets where he down't know anyone.  Or it's meeting people like me when he comes into a new group of people.  We get to talk about death.  Perhaps there was suppressed emotions when his mother passed when he was 14…  John affords me my interest in this point of his life.  This is a very touching and reveling moment in the interview.  And when his father dies, the worm turns and John is pissed at god.  It was a dark time. It took him a long time to grieve that.  He gets to share that with young people now and then, which is a gift for him.  I (mischa) have a very small family - Johns large and tight knit family fascinates me.  His family is smaller today, he is down to 29 first cousins.  Johns relatively recent crucible moments that he has come out the other side of…  we get to talk about that how he lost his faith.  It ends up reinforcing his faith and the path he is on.  “If you're still not connect to your higher power, god, whatever…   Who moved?!”  “God had a plan, and I forgot that".  “Don't forget what got you to your faith”.   He's a better man for it and his connection to source is that much better for it.  In regards to recent growth with his wife - Maybe I should ask a few more questions, and then I should be quiet…  and listen.  I don't have to answer! With his family, “I volunteer my opinion less than ever.”  John did some community volunteering with his son.  And the moment is very profound.  John Flannery is good man.Start podcasting!  Get the Shure MV88 mobile mic, you can literally take it anywhere on the fly https://amzn.to/2Mnba3QAccess my “Insiders Guide to Finding Peace” here: https://belove.media/peace    See more resources at https://belove.media/resources.   Email me: contact@belove.media   For social Media:      https://www.instagram.com/mrmischaz/  https://www.facebook.com/MischaZvegintzov     Subscribe and share to help spread the love for a better world! As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
