After briefly touching on the limited vocal support for Yoon from among his conservative allies, Baker steps back to explore the history of South Korea's conservative ties to dictatorship, beginning with Japan's brutal 30-year occupation of Korea through the end of the Second World War – an occupation bolstered by cooperation and support from conservative, capitalist, and right-wing Koreans – and through the sequential regimes of Chon Doo-hwan and Park Chung-hee from the 1960s-80s, with Park Geun-hye (daughter of Chung-hee) even rising to the Presidency just a decade ago only to be impeached over her corrupt practices, also unpacking the continued prevalence of authoritarian strains within the South Korean right over the last century. He and Emma then look at the non-coup-related failures of Yoon's regime that created both his overwhelming unpopularity and the strong opposition he sought to undermine via coup, wrapping up the interview by unpacking the role of the US in backing Yoon's regime, and what the ideal future of US-Korean relations would look like to the Korean electorate. Professor Giorgio Cafiero then joins, first running through updates on the recent sweeping offensives by Syrian rebels, successfully taking both Aleppo and Hama from the Assad regime, before taking a sharp step back as he walks us through the evolution of the 13-year Civil War, beginning with the Arab spring and spurring the intervention of myriad regional and international actors, through the 2015 intensification of conflict at the hand of increased Russian support for Assad and Iranian-backed groups, and to the lull in tensions that started in 2020, only to break this past week. After parsing through the more specific history of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the deep and complex ties between the Syrian and Iranian regimes, Emma and Professor Cafiero tackle the prevalent role of external conflicts in how the impact of these Syrian Rebel conquests will unfold, with Iran's involvement in Hezbollah's conflict with Israel and Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine giving two major parties conflicting interests. This Day in Legal History: Pope Innocent VIII Launches Witch HuntOn December 5, 1484, Pope Innocent VIII issued the papal bull Summis desiderantes affectibus, which formally authorized investigations and prosecutions of witchcraft in Germany. This decree empowered Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, Dominican inquisitors, to act against alleged witches, leading to heightened witch-hunting activities in the late 15th century. The bull emphasized the Church's role in combating heresy and supernatural practices deemed harmful to the Christian faith. The investigations authorized by this bull were pivotal in the creation of the infamous Malleus Maleficarum ("Hammer of the Witches") in 1486, a manual written by Kramer and Sprenger that advocated for the use of torture to extract confessions from accused witches.The bull and the subsequent witch hunts reflected prevailing fears of social and religious disorder, often targeting marginalized individuals, particularly women. Prompted by the January 2023 death of Tyre Nichols, a Black motorist beaten by Memphis officers, the investigation revealed patterns of unlawful stops, searches, and arrests, as well as discriminatory treatment of children and individuals with behavioral health disabilities. While the DOJ acknowledged that some reforms had been implemented, it emphasized that significant changes are still required to protect residents' civil and constitutional rights. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke stated that the community deserves a police department that fosters trust and safety. City officials have yet to agree to negotiate reforms with the DOJ. Memphis City Attorney Tannera Gibson argued that the report's relatively short investigation period suggests a "rush to judgment." On 1/30/2023, MPD Major Frank Winston was driving a pickup truck seized through a narcotics investigation and not assigned to him. When he went to park the vehicle upon his return, he scraped the passenger side of the truck along the driver side of a black Range Rover parked in the lot. After parking the truck, he exits the vehicle, appearing to be talking on the phone. He walks back to the Range Rover to look at the damage to the Range Rover then rubs his hand along the damaged side of the truck in an apparent attempt to wipe off any damage. He then gathers his belongings from the truck and walks away. Major Winston failed to report this crash and the damage per MPD policy and TN state law. Once this information was discovered, a complaint was filed to MPD Inspectional Services for investigations of the crash, failure to report and tampering with evidence. Further, Major Winston was promoted to Colonel and assigned as the commander for OCU. Since then, he illegally transferred the damaged truck to the MPD Firearms Training Unit for general use purposes. The complaint has been investigated and findings sent to the office of Assistant Chief Jones, where it has set with no action taken. Colonel Winston still retains his current position and has received no discipline for his policy violations or arrest for violation of state law regarding Leaving the Scene of a Crash – Property Damage Only and Tampering With Evidence. In February, Tyre Nichols' friends and family filled a Sacramento skate shop to remember their fellow skateboarder, friend, and brother. 29-year-old Nichols died on January 10th, 2023, three days after being brutally beaten by the Memphis police at a traffic stop. Republican Rep. George Santos has told the House GOP conference that he wants to be off the Science, Space and Technology Committee, along with the Committee on Small Business until his issues are resolved. Federal prosecutors are investigating Santos' finances while he faces calls to resigns over the lies about his education, career, heritage and religion. Former Republican Rep. Joe Walsh joins AC360 to discuss Santos stepping down from his committees and if he thinks House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had anything to do with it. Plus, an initial police report filed in the hours after the Tyre Nichols traffic stop suggested he was violent and “started to fight” with officers. Last Thursday, the Memphis Police Department announced that it was firing five police officers who beat a man named Tyre Nichols to death during a traffic stop. Shortly afterward, all five officers were jailed and charged with murder. Then the police department released body-camera and surveillance-camera footage of the incident. In the days that followed, the footage, and the question of whether or not to watch it, became the object of public preoccupation, superseding the violence it captured. The five former Memphis police officers who were fired over their actions during the arrest of Tyre Nichols are facing murder and kidnapping charges. Authorities say Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, was hospitalized after a traffic stop and “confrontation” with Memphis police. He died three days after he was arrested. Antonio Romanucci is one of the attorneys representing the Nichols' family. He tells AC360 how the family is feeling after the indictments.
