It's time for another topic you are only going to hear on TrekRanks! This week we are breaking down the “Top 5 Five-Minute Characters” – which is exactly what it sounds like. It's a celebration of those characters who appeared in maybe only one or two scenes for no more than five minutes total, but for some reason you still think about them and probably want to see more of them. Our panel of host Jim Moorhouse and expert guests John Krikorian and Anika Dane get deep into the weeds on five-minute characters in this classic episode of TrekRanks. Episode Rundown: Prime Directive: We skip our Diagnostic Cycle this week to jump straight into how each member of our panel narrowed down their list and made their final choices. The Order of Things: All the picks are revealed with the TrekRanks' original “Five words and a hashtag” summary, along with the episode for their character. Secondary Systems: For a few extra picks that just missed our final list. Regeneration Cycle: The panel recaps their picks and we dissect some of the interesting statistical anomalies that arose from the discussion. Temporal Inversion: We flashback to a previous episode of TrekRanks and relay some of the feedback received from listeners. If you have your own picks you would like to relay to us, please hail us 757-828-RANK (7625) and record your own personal TrekRanks log to let us know your Top 5 Five-Minute Characters. (Or you can record it yourself and just DM us @TrekRanks.bsky.social on Bluesky.) Your comments could be used as part of a Temporal Inversion on an upcoming episode (and might get you a chance to be a guest on a future episode, too). This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those. We sat with John Krikorian (of the Trek Profiles podcast) to talk about going back to the videogames and media that we have previously loved - he has a wonderful story about returning to EverQuest. It's only fair to let you know that between 25:47 and 27:37, John gets into some potentially upsetting things. Squidge talks about it in the intro, listen out for the klaxon, and check your chapters tab (if your podcatcher supports it).As is customary for our show, we wanted to talk to John about what he'd been playing recently, and what he would take to the Thunder Plains (we temporarily renamed "The Thunder Plains Games" to "The Nimbus III Games" in his honour). This episode is so chocked full of stuff, that I would recommend you check out the full show notes for this episode, as we've added a whole bunch of extra information there. And if you haven't played the game yet, you really should. It's out for practically all formats. Are you a Trekkie? Do you prefer Star Wars? Have you listened to John's podcast? What about the games we talked about, have you played them? What would be on your Nimbus III list? Let us know on Twitter, Facebook, leave a comment on the show notes or try our brand new contact page. And have you left us a rating or review? John Krikorian has been the men's basketball coach at Christopher Newport University since June of 2010. He is just the fourth head coach in the program's 53-year history, and has led the Captains to amazing success, including its first two Final Four appearances. His squad advanced to the 2015-2016 Final Four in Salem, Va., as well as the 2018-2019 Final Four in Fort Wayne, IN. He has now guided the Captains to the NCAA Tournament a total of six times, including the last four seasons. Krikorian’s coaching resume includes six seasons as an NCAA Division I assistant and 13 as a Division III head coach. His overall head coaching record is 275-95 (.743) Krikorian’s journey to CNU began with a passion for basketball from an early age, and a tremendous work ethic on the court as an athlete and in the classroom as a student. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering in 1996 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he played on the junior varsity basketball team. Following his college days, Krikorian spent two years in the business world working for Princeton Consultants, an information management company in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1998, Krikorian returned to his passion and accepted the position of graduate assistant basketball coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College. After one season at West Virginia Wesleyan, “Coach K” made his first stop at the Merchant Marine Academy as an assistant coach under Billy Lange during the 1999-2000 season. After a season there, he returned to his alma mater for two seasons, working as an assistant at Penn under Fran Dunphy. Krikorian then accepted an assistant position at another Division I program, Lafayette College in Easton, PA. There he assisted Fran O’Hanlon from 2002-2004. His journey then took him to Annapolis, MD, where he spent two years as an assistant at the United States Naval Academy (2004-2006)…re-uniting with head coach Billy Lange. His time at Navy came to an end when he was named the head coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 2006, beginning his head coaching career with an amazing four-year transformation of the Mariners before becoming the head coach at CNU. Earl Grey: A Star Trek The Next Generation Podcast

Romulans in "The Enemy" and "The Defector."   The third season episodes "The Enemy" and "The Defector" aired within a few months of each other and provided the first episodes of The Next Generation to show Romulan characters in such depth. The Romulans appeared in The Next Generation in more episodes than in any other Star Trek series, but how much do we really know about this iconic species?  In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser, Amy Nelson, and Richard Marquez are joined by special guest John Krikorian of the Trek Profiles podcast to talk about "The Enemy" and "The Defector" to uncover what we learn about the Romulans from these episodes. Topics discussed include why the Romulans seem to prefer deception and elaborate plotting, what the range of characters we see in the episodes tell us about Romulan behavior under different circumstances, and what we may be able to determine about Romulan culture.
