J.M. Barrie, the fascinating Scottish writer, gave us Peter Pan - the boy who never grows up, and his notorious pirate nemesis: Captain Hook. But where did this iconic rivalry come from, and how did Barrie's fascination with both youth and pirates shape this timeless story? Barrie's life, marked by personal tragedy and complex relationships, set the stage for a world where innocence meets adventure on the high seas. The figure of Captain Hook looms large over Peter Pan. Modelled partly on the infamous privateer Christopher Newport, who ruled Caribbean waters with a missing arm, Hook embodies the darker side of Neverland. Inspired by his relationship with the Llewelyn Davies family, Barrie crafted Peter Pan as a tribute to these young boys who captured his heart. Yet, their lives would be marked by profound loss, shadowing the whimsy of the Lost Boys with tragedy.  Join William and Anita as they dive into the origins of Barrie's Peter Pan and the history behind Neverland's fictional pirates. There is a ton of useful guidance that applies to everyone and insights into how coaches think about recruiting. A big thank you to Glenn Gray, a previous guest of the podcast, who is the college advisor for the Richmond Strikers for helping make this happen. The conversation covers various aspects of the recruiting process, including communication with coaches, academic requirements, the importance of showcases and ID camps, and the use of marketing skills. The chapters provide insights into what coaches look for in recruits, the frequency of updates to coaches, and the importance of personalizing emails. The conversation also touches on the emotions and timeline involved in the recruiting process. The conversation covers various aspects of the college soccer experience, including the importance of the overall college experience, life outside of soccer, choosing the right school, handling rejection, alternative paths, staying involved in the sport, financial considerations, having financial discussions with coaches, knowing where you stand with coaches, and recruiting timelines. The college experience is about more than just soccer, so it's important to consider factors such as location, campus culture, and academic programs when choosing a school. Not every player will have the opportunity to play consistently or at all in college, so it's crucial to find a school where you will be happy and fulfilled regardless of your playing time. The transfer portal is an option for players who are unhappy with their initial college choice, but it's best to choose a school where you can see yourself being happy for four years. If you don't receive an offer from your top choice schools, it's important to have alternative plans and consider other ways to stay involved in the sport, such as refereeing or coaching.Having open and honest conversations with coaches about financial considerations is crucial, as it can impact your ability to attend a particular school.Knowing where you stand with coaches and asking for feedback can help you gauge your chances of being recruited and make informed decisions about your college options.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Coach Noah01:08 What Coaches Look for in Recruits02:53 Academic Requirements for Recruits04:04 Initiating and Maintaining Communication with Coaches06:02 Frequency of Updates to Coaches08:40 Number of Schools on Recruit's List10:25 Geographical Considerations in Recruiting11:25 Upcoming Showcases and Tournaments13:32 Importance of Showcases and ID Camps18:01 Using Marketing Skills in the Recruiting Process21:08 Choosing Business and Marketing as Majors24:26 Important Information to Include in Emails to Coaches33:52 Emotions and Timeline in the Recruiting Process42:16 The Importance of the College Experience43:07 Life Outside of Soccer44:21 Choosing the Right School45:19 The Transfer Portal46:20 Handling Rejection47:13 Alternative Paths49:24 Staying Involved in the Sport51:29 Financial Considerations55:38 Having Financial Discussions with Coaches59:16 Knowing Where You Stand with Coaches01:04:17 Recruiting Timelines

And Paul Crowley of Christopher Newport joins us as well after the CNU men won the D-III national title and the CNU women won their national semifinal and will play for the national title on Saturday, April 1.  Rindahl has spent 16 of the past 18 years in the Whitewater football program, and he comes into his first year as head coach with a schedule that is just simply loaded, starting with John Carroll. He talks with us about what kind of head coach he'll be, how the program feels after their surprising first-round playoff loss to Aurora, and how they intend to handle each new opponent in that gauntlet. Behrman is a John Carroll grad just returning to the institution after a quarter-century, and he talks about what the university has to sell to recruits, how much he'll change the scheme, whether he'll be able to bring some stability to a program that is on its third head coach in three seasons, and how much Mount Union footage he has watched so far. And Crowley talks about the great gameday atmosphere at his institution, some of last year's early growing pains in his first year as a head coach and what kind of kids he is looking to recruit to get his program back in the conference title conversation. Plus, Pat and Greg talk about the fact that D-III seems to keep losing programs and what that means for the SCIAC (divisions?) and the SAA (expansion?). Pat puts Greg on the spot and gets a conference ranking for the SCAC, whenever it is able to get all of its programs on the field.  The post ATN Podcast 328: Three teams with reason to look ahead appeared first on D3football.com » D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast.

Welcome to Episode 108 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. It's our second of ten 2023 regional preview pods as we head to the South, home to some of the strongest teams in D-III. We review them all, in the following order: C2C (at 5:30) An enormous percentage of the Salisbury team that has made back-to-back championship series is back in 2023 as the Sea Gulls look like a juggernaut once again IMPORTANT NOTE: We were informed after recording this episode that Salisbury is actually now in Region 5, one of the two Mid-Atlantic regions. We will discuss the ramifications of that move on the Region 5 preview pod but it doesn't change much about how we feel about the actual team so we left the Sea Gulls convo in the pod as is.  Christopher Newport's pitching staff can rack up the strikeouts but they'll need more offensive firepower to really elevate into the elite tier of teams this season ODAC (at 21:00) Lynchburg lost some key pieces but still has multiple All-Region-types on the roster that could carry them for another deep postseason run Shenandoah's lineup was already going to be loaded and now they get one of the best players in America back from injury Roanoke is a balanced squad that is extra motivated after being snubbed from the postseason in 2022 Randolph-Macon's young team in 2022 was better than expected -- can they compete with the older rosters atop this loaded conference? SAA (at 37:30) Birmingham-Southern should have an elite offense again but will need some arms to step up big time Count on Rhodes, Hendrix and Berry to challenge the Panthers atop this conference USA South (at 45:50) NC Wesleyan is now in great position as the favorite of this shrunken conference Methodist, Pfeiffer and William Peace are all solid and could benefit from extremely old rosters Collegiate Conference of the South (at 50:15) Few teams as many total bases to replace as LaGrange but they still have one of the best hitters in the country back and a good amount of top-end pitching, making them the favorite Belhaven might just step right in from the SCAC and become LaGrange's biggest challenger, but keep there are a lot of solid programs in this newly formed conference: Huntingdon, Maryville (TN), Piedmont, Brevard, Covenant UAA (at 59:35) Emory has been solid recently but still looking to rediscover its incredible peak from a decade ago We conclude (at 1:02:00) with our player and pitcher of the year picks, and our teams to beat. Again we digress into the question of privateering and letters of marque, and then take on the stories of the two "sons" whom Christopher Newport and the paramount chief Powhatan exchanged as hostages and emissaries in 1608, the English boy Thomas Savage and the young Powhatan man Namontack. Neither are as famous as Pocahontas or, for that matter, Squanto (Tisquantum), but they were remarkable in their own right. Both would show an impressive facility for utterly alien languages and cultures, and both would be torn between loyalty to their own people and to the side that adopted them. One of them would eventually achieve the honor of giving a name to a vessel of the United States Navy.
