Your podcast can be heartfelt and still be strategic. I'm joined by Jordan Blair, a podcast producer at Buzzsprout and co-host of BuzzCast, to unpack the real-world basics that separate podcasts that fade out from podcasts that grow. We start with something deceptively simple: your “why.” Jordan shares how clarity of purpose shapes everything from topic choices to guest selection to podcast marketing, and why listeners only return when they know exactly what they'll get every time they press play. From there, we get practical about podcast audio quality and listener experience. Jordan explains why “good enough” audio is mostly about removing distractions, and how modern tools can help indie creators sound polished without a studio. Then we move into the part most creators underestimate: engagement. We talk parasocial relationships, how to turn listeners into superfans, and how features like Buzzsprout Fan Mail can make it easy for people to reach you with feedback, questions, and even voice messages you can use in future episodes. We also cover consistency without burnout, including giving yourself permission to take a break, how to communicate it clearly, and how Dynamic Content can place a timely announcement across your back catalog and remove it later. Finally, Jordan breaks down podcast monetization without the pressure, why listener support can beat ads, and how sponsorships can create stress if you're not careful. If you're starting a podcast, restarting after a slump, or trying to make your show sustainable, you'll leave with concrete next steps.Link to Buzzsprout's official podcast about podcasting!Subscribe to Connect Inspire Create for more grounded creator conversations, share this with a podcaster friend, and if it helps you, leave a quick review so more indie creators can find it.Let me know what you'd like to hear more about on the showSupport the showI'm Carol Clegg, your host, an accountability coach and curious conversationalist inviting guests from a wide range of backgrounds to share insights on how they live, think, and navigate change. If you enjoy reflection, fresh perspectives, and honest dialogue, this space is for you.If you'd like to experience this work in community, I host a complimentary monthly Accountability Circle a supportive space to pause, gain clarity, and choose a gentle next step forward. I've been podcasting for 7 years and have produced 6 podcasts, and I love helping indie creators solve the stuff that all podcasters face: inconsistent content creation, lack of listener engagement, and monetization that feels out of reach. My approach is friendly and grounded in real workflows, examples from my own personal mistakes, and strategies that work even when you don't have a big team. I've spoken at Podcast Movement on monetization strategy (“Sponsorships, Subscriptions, or Support? Choose the Right Monetization Strategy for Your Podcast”), and on how indie podcasters can rival the pros through smart branding, marketing, and monetizing. So many people think the only way you can have a successful podcast is to be famous. Today we have a quick Interview with Jordan Blair from the Dreamful podcast and the Buzzsprout podcast Buzzcast. Jordan share all the straggles she is using to monetize her show.Jordan's Been Podcasting For Seven YearsThis didn't happen overnight, but you will hear where Jordan recommends starting monetization efforts from day one. This way your family and friends who want to support the show can actually chip in, and the audience gets used to hearing you ask for support. If you feel weird asking for value in return for the value you have given to the audience, keep in mind PBS has been doing this for decades.Where Do You Start?Jordan recommends starting off with enabling donations (technically a tip not a donation, unless you're a non-profit). Buzzsprout has this built in or you could use buy me a coffee, and many others. If you start with subscriptions, as you're just starting the show, it may be a little overwhelming and you end up making extra content for an audience that doesn't exist (yet). Just realize if you want people to chip in, you have to ask.You can see Jordan's support page here.Affiliate Links Are a Great TestWe talked about tools for using affiliate links in a previous episode. Affiliate links enable you to make a commission on a sale from someone using your special link. This is a great test and practice to get used to doing calls to action, promoting a product, and seeing what products your audience is interestedThe Pros and Cons of MerchJordan shares how she created some swag for her audience, setup a store and received absolutely zero sales. This is when she realized she should ask her audience what they want first before making swag. For more on merch sales check out my interview with Jayna Marie.First Person Endorsements Deliver Tons of ValueJordan's show is for kids who are trying to go to sleep. She found some puzzles and bought them and tried them. She knew this would resonate with her audience, and talked about her own experience with the puzzles and the affiliate links came flowing in.You Might Have to Take Partners to SchoolJordan explains that her first sponsor knocked on her door, and provided an offer. Jordan had to explain to them how partnerships work in podcasting (this isn't radio, and we have a much stronger connection with our audiences). She renogiated and came up with a dela that worked for everyone. She Didn't Plan on Making MoneyJordan started the Dreamful stories podcast as a resource for her own children. She launched it, and focused on delivering value and connecting with her audience. She found out what they wanted and delivered the show they wanted. This lead to her show's downloads escalating while she was on a break!Check out Jordan's ShowsDreamful StoriesBuzzcastGot Feedback On This Episode?I'd love to hear what you thought about this episode. Send us Fan MailLights! Microphone! Podcast -- Episode 4Are you optimizing your podcast for the right platforms? Jordan Blair, Podcast Producer at Buzzsprout, breaks down the current reality of podcast growth. Jordan explains why you must stop treating platforms like TikTok or Instagram and start treating them like libraries. You will learn the single most important rule for discoverability: use keyword-rich show and episode titles for SEO, or risk not being found at all. This episode is packed with practical tips, including how to use the Episode Consumption graph to pinpoint audience drop-off and fix consistency issues. Jordan confirms that listener support (donations and subscriptions) is the only monetization strategy that provides reliable, constant revenue, unlike volatile ad income. He also debunks the myth that asking for ratings and reviews helps your show grow. Send a question for 'Ask Megan'Hey Podcasters! When Buzzsprout's podcast producer, Jordan Blair, started Dreamful Bedtime Stories, it was just a creative way to help her kids fall asleep. She never expected it to become a podcast with more than 13 million downloads, or that she'd test nearly every monetization strategy along the way. After six years of experimenting with sponsorships, affiliates, subscriptions, and listener support, she's learned what actually works (and what doesn't) when it comes to making money from a podcast. Here's a quick look at her biggest lessons:1. Don't Monetize Too SoonJumping in too early can do more harm than good.Jordan tried it all, from merch to premium content and even ad reads, but she realized that monetization works best when it enhances your show, not distracts from it.Start monetizing when it feels like a natural next step, not a side hustle.2. Start Small With Listener SupportBefore chasing big sponsors, start with listener support. It's an easy way to test interest and build the habit of asking for support from your audience. If listeners are willing to chip in a few dollars, that's proof that your content resonates!3. Choose Partners That FitJordan's first sponsor was a $300 deal with a small wellness brand. It wasn't flashy, but it taught her how to negotiate and partner with brands that actually align with her audience. Which was more valuable long-term.4. Keep It TransparentThe FTC now requires clear disclosures for sponsorships and affiliate links, which include podcasts!A quick “This episode is sponsored by…” is all it takes to stay compliant and maintain trust. There's no single path to podcast monetization, but there is a smarter one. On the Buzzsprout blog, Jordan breaks down real examples and lessons from six years of testing every major strategy, so you can find what works for your show.Have a question for Megan? Send a text! That's all for this week! Thanks for listening & keep podcasting!
