Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - The Audio Drama. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is a rather infamous film both in and out of Star Trek circles, but we here at Standard Orbit happen to love it. In celebration of our 300th episode, hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart decided to do something special: an audio drama of The Final Frontier based on an earlier draft of the film's script (featuring the rock monster) and with the dream casting of the film, Sean Connery as Sybok. We can't thank our fellow hosts and listeners who participated in this massive undertaking enough: Tony Robinson, John Mills, Lee Sargent, Justin Oser, Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, Duncan Barrett, Brandon-Shea Mutala, Zachary Fruhling, Norman C. Section 31 in TNG. Section 31 first appeared in the Deep Space Nine season 6 episode "Inquisition," which aired in April 1998. Section 31 appeared in 2 more episodes of Deep Space Nine, 4 episodes of Enterprise, the movie Into Darkness, and 5 episodes of Discovery (so far). What would Section 31 have looked like if it had been introduced on The Next Generation instead of Deep Space Nine? In the episodes and movies of The Next Generation that we did get, are there hints of Section 31 that we can find? In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss Section 31 and what it may have looked like on The Next Generation. Topics discussed include our thoughts on how Section 31 has been portrayed in Star Trek, how Section 31 might have been different if it were first introduced on The Next Generation, and the clues that we see in several episodes and movies that we think may point to Section 31's involvement. There's a lot of things an old car can do. It can get you where you're going, it can help you out of a bind, and sometimes it can cost you an arm and a leg. But what you might not know is, your old car can help kids in need of second chance at an education. Hard to believe, right? Richard Marquez doesn't think so. He's been the CEO of Texans Can Academies since 2007 and today on a brand new episode of The Mike McGavel Jones Show, he's sitting down with Mike to talk about how Texans Can got started, how they're changing the education game here in the lone star state, and how Texans Can can turn that rusty old car into a bright future. To find out more about Texans Can, visit their website at www.carsforkids.org and www.texanscan.org.

Favorite Badass Geordi Moments. Geordi La Forge is often thought of primarily as the brilliant chief engineer of the Enterprise-D and the Enterprise-E who was born blind but can see with the help of his advanced VISOR. Geordi is also frequently remembered for his difficulty with romantic relationships. However, we think that Geordi does have his share of badass moments throughout the course of The Next Generation episodes and movies. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez and Justin Oser are joined by guest Hayley Stoddart of Standard Orbit to list their three favorite badass Geordi moments from The Next Generation. Romulans in "The Enemy" and "The Defector." The third season episodes "The Enemy" and "The Defector" aired within a few months of each other and provided the first episodes of The Next Generation to show Romulan characters in such depth. The Romulans appeared in The Next Generation in more episodes than in any other Star Trek series, but how much do we really know about this iconic species? In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser, Amy Nelson, and Richard Marquez are joined by special guest John Krikorian of the Trek Profiles podcast to talk about "The Enemy" and "The Defector" to uncover what we learn about the Romulans from these episodes. Topics discussed include why the Romulans seem to prefer deception and elaborate plotting, what the range of characters we see in the episodes tell us about Romulan behavior under different circumstances, and what we may be able to determine about Romulan culture. "The Chase" and Panspermia. "The Chase" is a sixth season episode of The Next Generation that answered a question many fans had wondered about over the years - why do so many of the species that we see in Star Trek look so similar? This question is answered when the pieces of a puzzle spanning many worlds and billions of years is revealed. A progenitor species found themselves alone in the galaxy four billions years ago and decided to seed many planets with life in the hope that the resulting intelligent species would one day connect and understand each other. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser and Richard Marquez are joined by special guests Mike Wong and Elise Cutts of the Strange New Worlds: A Science and Star Trek Podcast to discuss "The Chase" and the science behind the idea of panspermia presented in the episode. Panspermia is the theory that life can be introduced in different environments because it was seeded from outer space, whether through natural objects (such as asteroids and comets) or through artificial means. We discuss the science behind panspermia, whether the idea presented in "The Chase" works from a scientific or a storytelling perspective, and how we could know if life on Earth was introduced from space. Writing the MACOs Into Starfleet. The Military Assault Command Operations became a part of Star Trek: Enterprise in season three. Not a division of Starfleet, they were a United Earth military organization that had trained relentlessly as soldiers, but had little actual battle experience outside of simulations, though their technology and tactics were more advanced. Rumor has it that after The United Federation of Planets was founded, Starfleet turned towards science and exploration, and the MACOs were likely no longer a good fit for such missions. So what happened to them? In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Patrick Devlin and Brandi Jackola are joined by special guest Richard Marquez of Earl Grey in the Season Five Writers' Room to create a story about MACOs integrating into Starfleet.
