Welcome to the new season of Let's Connect, where I reflect on the lessons I've learned from living through the pandemic and share some of the tools I've been using to help navigate these strange and challenging times. In this first episode, I dive into mindfulness and creative leadership and suggest practical ways to shift stuck patterns like people-pleasing and perfectionism. I also explain why applying for a private pilot's license and completing a successful solo flight has helped me face up to my fears and given me an unparalleled sense of freedom. A solo episode of Let’s Connect is a real test of my confidence. Will I be good enough to carry the show? Will people like it? Is everyone laughing at me right now? How many times a day do you wonder if you measure up, or worse, convince yourself that you’re a total failure? The invitation in today’s episode is to start telling yourself a new story. This is the first show of 2021, so I thought it would be perfect to start the year by starting over. Confidence. I’ve spent a lifetime chasing how to live with it, authentically. Now, I want to help you find a way to stop second-guessing your every move. When I was in grade seven, I wanted so badly to be an actor. But something painful happened that made me start hiding and telling myself I wasn’t good enough. I will share that story in this episode. When did you start hiding and feeling like you weren’t good enough? I have a formula for self-assuredness to offer you today. It fights off the inner saboteur that wants to keep you feeling small, and it brings you back to the present, where your power is waiting. So let’s not wait another minute to get to them now, and leave what was then behind us. With Christmas just a few days away, I wanted to offer a gift from my heart to yours. This time of year, we have an opportunity to reflect on forgiveness and peace. As we’re all staying home, some of us suffering old hurts and new loss, I’m reminded that our souls - everyone’s souls - just need to breathe. We need to see the glory of the simplicity, harmony, and wonder of life, one day at a time. Whether you celebrate Christmas or another meaningful tradition, I believe it’s true that the power of music transcends whatever might try to divide us. The universal language of music is my gift to you today. You’ll also hear a contemplative reading of the work of Celtic mystic and poet John O’Donohue, my rendition of River by the great Joni Mitchell, and Maybe This Christmas by Ron Sexsmith, one of the nation’s best and most underrated singer-songwriters. I’ve also got a personal story to tell you about how the universe recently nudged me to pay attention to the call to give, wholeheartedly. My friends, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and season’s greetings to you and yours. May we all take care of ourselves, and especially our suffering brothers and sisters. Right now, we’re all being brought together by something we don’t want to have in our lives. As we all navigate COVID-19, our individual experiences are unique. There are children learning from home while their parents try to juggle work and homeschooling at the same time. There are countless people who’ve lost their jobs and who aren’t sure how they’ll pay their bills. And there are those who mourn the loss of a loved one who was taken by COVID; a loved one who they didn’t even get to say goodbye to. In all of this, we feel it: sadness, fear, depression, worry, guilt, anxiety, and stress. What do we do with all these emotions? We can’t figure it all out, but we can accept ourselves for feeling what we’re feeling. And, we can move through COVID-19 in healthy ways that will support us. In this episode of Let’s Connect, I will help you move through it by offering some teaching on how to be with your feelings without allowing them to take over your mind, and your life. We’re living in a time where it’s becoming more and more difficult to discern what’s real and what’s a racket. The social networking systems we’re being informed by are feeding us a steady stream of content that complex algorithms have decided is what we’re craving. Perhaps most concerning is that so many of us are just going along largely unaware of the forces of manipulation that are competing for our headspace. So, how can we breathe, get still, observe, and be aware of the truth? What are the secrets waiting to be revealed to us when we go inward? And how do we even do that? With all that we’re witnessing right now in an unstable world, I’m ready to put the brakes on this roller coaster. As I sat down to record this particular episode of the podcast, I had a major internal battle with myself. I was trying to be “perfect” and appear to have things all together, when inside of me, something just didn’t feel right! After 24 hours of struggling to get this podcast recorded, I finally came to understand what this inner battle was all about! I was distracted and preoccupied with all the noise around me (including my phone buzzing, my to-do list, and many of the habits that have unconsciously crept into my life over the past few months). I realized that I had lost touch with my inner spirit. In our world, there is so much emphasis on delivering results that we often lose focus of other important things that equally matter; our physical, mental, and emotional health. And in the process of getting to the end result, we can develop deteriorating habits that negatively impact not only our peace of mind but more significantly, our own productivity. How do we counter this? How do we let go to find space and foster a perspective of living mindfully? In this episode, I vulnerably share my own struggle with striving for perfection and offer some newfound tips that I am also integrating into my own daily life. When we sit down with ourselves, take a deep breath, and really open our minds; we find the space and ease that we need in order to get to the end result that we want. Join me as I sift through helpful tips to live life mindfully, and talk about negative habits to watch out for! How will you practice gratitude if you are facing a $30,000 house repair? This was Keith Macpherson’s personal experience when he was challenged to practice gratitude in his most challenging times, just like facing a $30,000 bill to repair his house in Canada. Keith lives in Winnipeg, Canada, and it's quite common for houses in Canada that shift foundations because the city was built on a waterbed system. Despite this, he calls himself lucky to have a moving house. Keith is a wide range reader, and the book by Florence Scovel Shinn about gratitude changed his perspective in life. Florence says, “Gratitude is the law of increase, and the complaint is the law of decrease.” And in the $30,000 bill that he’s facing for the repair, he sees it as a symbol of gratitude or thankfulness to whatever service is provided for him. Through and though, Keith continues to practice the law of gratitude and navigates and moves through life’s difficulties with a gratitude state of mind every single day. And on money, he says, “Financial Freedom is God's idea for a man what God has done before he can do for me and more opens doors.” Keith wants to know what you think about gratitude as well, and share your experience also. So if that's true, I think I still take things seriously, but there is this fall back of understanding. There's a much bigger picture going on beyond whatever small problems I have on a daily basis. So I think it's really helped me rethink things that might have stressed me out or caused anxiety. Thoughts on Breathing I'm much more open now to the effects of breathing, especially after seeing things like holotropic breath work, which is basically a way of inducing a psychedelic state. I haven't experienced it, but it's often talked about. Also, the Wim Hoff method (www.WimHofMethod.com), that's something where, I think, everyone who does it experiences an altered state of consciousness by over-oxygenating the brain, effectively. You breath heavily in and then you let the breath go, so you end up netting in more oxygen than you're letting out. And when you do that for a long time and then hold your breath, like he suggests, it's almost like a state of euphoria just from breathing. It has enriched my life a lot, I think mainly because I feel a lot more connection to the surroundings, and in daily life, I try to spend time pausing for beauty and looking at the beauty of the natural world. I'm very fortunate, Tucson is a lovely town, and we've got the Catalina mountains and the Santa Ritas, so we're surrounded by mountains, the clouds, the sun. It's just a very beautiful place and I take enough time to really pause and take that in, and that to me really is the core of mindfulness, being able to appreciate your daily life. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is an Absolutely crucial [part of my mindfulness].. Whenever you feel a little bit tense or a little bit upset or any kind of stress at all, just do a quick little minute or two exercise where you count your breaths. That's all. So for me, whenever I begin, it always begins with, 'Take a deep breath. Hold it for three seconds, release it for three seconds' and you do that pattern. And the next thing you know, everything becomes manageable again and you're focused and you're in the moment. That breathing exercise helps calm the mind down and that is a crucial part of any meditation exercise. Suggested Resources Book: Urban Shaman by Serge Kahili King App: n/a Bullying Story There's a lot of conflict in prisons and violence and conflict are kind of at the core of that experience because you get a lot of people that really are rule breakers and you get them all together and stuff them in one room and they're not allowed to leave. That's prison. So there was this one guy, and this was in Texas, in a prison in Texas, who just couldn't get along with anybody in his cartel member. And he would, he would bully because he was a very large guy and worked out a lot. Making a long story short, he was picking on one guy who is kind of small and thin, a native American kid. It was on the weight pile and there was a number of us that were around that really liked this kid. He was a good kid, from one of the tribes there in Texas. And we just said, "You know what, we're not putting up with this anymore." And we surrounded this guy in the middle of this session where he's belittling this kid and really, really overbearing. And we surrounded him and were just like, "Look at yourself. Look at who you are. You're 280 pounds of solid meat. You bench press 500 pounds. And here's this kid who's 100 pounds and you're bullying this kid. What are you doing? Look at yourself. Who are you?" And the shame of the group, the ability of the group to just focus their energy and saying, "You know what, you are so close to being an outcast, we are done with you. We are so sick of this." That had an enormous impact. He went quiet, he gathered up his things, he left and he was a lot more reflective and a lot more thoughtful and that, of everybody just dirty looking him, giving him a hard time, and saying this is not acceptable behavior, and that bringing the present moment, that mindfulness moment, if you will. Interfering there had a real impact and it had an impact on other people that had that kind of personality as well, because they saw what happened that, and this is the essence of society, is that if you have a group of people that share the same kind of values and vision, that they really can make an impact, really can have an impact on your surrounding. Even in a society that's violent and sort of out of control like a prison. When you mentioned bullying, I thought immediately of that little get together where we were like, "No, no, no, we're done. This is enough." On-Line Course Join Mindfulness Coach and author, Keith Macpherson in an immersive learning environment as you explore the five key principles to mindfulness practice. So I think of emotions flowing through and when they can't flow through, they get stuck. So crying is a very good example of this. We've been raised in a culture that says crying is a bad thing. Don't cry boys. Don't cry, don't cry. We apologize when we cry and yet this is the body's way of flowing through energy that's just trying to release and move through. And if we clamp down and we say, don't cry, where does that energy go? It gets stuck in the physical body, it gets dammed up and all of a sudden we start feeling inflammation and everything gets tight and constricted and this turns into dis ease. Literally, it's the unconscious bodies mind's way of trying to inform a conscious like, hey, there's something here that's not working. You're out of alignment. So emotions to me are energy in motion. It's helping us become aware of what's happening in the moment, what am I feeling? And if we're not listening, we really get out of alignment. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing to me is an anchoring practice. It's something fairly consistent. Our breath is our life force. So if we don't breathe, we die. I'm in North America. We're very chronic, shallow breathers. Most of us are holding a lot of tension and stress. The invention of technology, although it's very fun and connects us in some ways, it really causes a lot of stress and pressure. We're living in a time where we're bombarded by all of these requests from our phone telling us who we should be friends with and where we should eat and how many steps and you know, all this stuff and it's stressful. And so our breath as a result physically, it kind of vanishes. It gets really shallow. So the breath to me is a way to bring life back in. It's a way to create presence. It's a way to, in the moment expand charisma and to reset. There's so much to the breath. We need to spend an episode on that because it's really at the core of who we are. It connects our thinking mind and our physical body and just anchors us into this moment. Suggested Resources Book: The Dynamic Laws of Healing by Catherine Ponder Book: Making Sense Of Mindfulness: Five Principals to Integrate Mindfulness Practice into Your Daily Life by Keith Macpherson App: Insight Timer Bullying Story When I was growing up I had an exceptional amount of arm hair. This was the closest I personally came to feeling bullied, but I used to be made fun of and I still do. People see my arm hair and they laugh. When I was in Africa, actually I think it was kind of funny, but the kids would pet me because they were [were reminded of] a dog or something because I had so much arm hair. I can laugh about it now, but at the time when I was growing up, this was a big deal for me. I'd always wear long sleeve shirts and I didn't want anybody to see my arms and it felt like if they did, they'd make fun of me. Even today one of my best friends, and I love him to death, but he said, dude, you've got to shave your arm hair. It's too much, and so we did and you know, it was one of those things growing up where I was just really feeling self conscious about how I looked physically and it was just to me like a real small glimpse of what it would be like to be bullied on a very big level. I have so much compassion for people that have experienced bullying. At the same time I have a lot of compassion for the bullies themselves because this is totally a form of fear and disconnect and unconsciously playing out. It just gives me a little insight and compassion when I think of being made fun of for my arm hair, what it must be like to be bullied on a deeper level too. Keith is a musician, yoga teacher, life coach, and mindfulness educator. He is also my friend and life coach. He brings his friendly, light energy wherever he goes. Students of his yoga classes appreciate his insightful stories at the beginning of class, his goofy jokes that break up stressful poses and his sweet voice that sings the final notes of the class. In today’s episode, Keith is going to share some of his stories and lessons from traveling all over the world and what he’s noticed about the human experience. He will also teach us a bit about mindfulness and how we can start being mindful in our lives and what it might mean for us.
