Today's guest is Dr. Greg Wells a Physiologist, Scientist, Author, and renowned health and high-performance expert. He has dedicated his career to studying the science of human limits and developing practical strategies to help individuals and organizations perform at their best, even under the most challenging circumstances. He's even worked with Olympic athletes. But his most important work is with those of us who simply want to optimize health every single day. His guidance in this interview relates to protecting and optimizing our Mitochondria, which affects every aspect of our lives. It's a really interesting way to look at how we can have some agency over our mental and physical health so we can live our best lives. Note: Use discount code UNTANGLE15 at choosemuse.com to order your Muse Headband. Show notes: We get our energy from mitochondria. These are tiny structures inside our cells that break down the foods that we eat to create energy. They're in our muscles, our brains, they're all over the place. We need our mitochondria to live our best, healthiest lives. Our mitochondria are damaged by stress, but they're really responsive to lifestyle activities so there's infinite potential for them to get better. We produce 2 billion new mitochondria every single day. These enable us to think, move, be creative, play music, build relationships…almost everything that is fundamental to life. As little as three minutes of exercise a day can stimulate the production of new and better mitochondria that make us able to have more energy to navigate our lives. When we do things like meditation, our mitochondria become stronger. He is a big Muse user and loves it. Mitochondria are also a common pathway to different diseases like cancer, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases. When they aren't working properly, they can even be responsible for depression, so even our mental health depends upon healthy, high-functioning mitochondria. Also important to creating a joyful and meaningful life are social connections, people, pursuits, and purpose. A strong focus in these areas can have a profound impact on longevity. Flow plus meaning is the best predictor of “Magic Moments.” Resources: Drgregwells.com

In this episode, Nicole Aucoin interviews Dr. Greg Wells, an expert in sleep and stress management who has just released a book called "Powerhouse: Elevate Your Energy, Optimize Your Health, Surcharge Your Performance". They discuss the effects of the pandemic on stress and burnout, and how coaches can apply principles from Dr. Wells' book to help their clients thrive. The conversation covers the benefits of breathwork, cold water immersion, and other techniques to optimize health and performance. In this episode, you'll learn: Benefits of breathwork: short, fast exhale activate the nervous system and increase energy, while long, slow exhale calms the mind and reduce stress; it can help control emotions and enable individuals to respond rather than react to situations. Benefits of cold-water immersion: it settles the nervous system, boosts the immune system, and fights inflammation; a 5-minute duration in the water around 5 degrees Celsius is recommended for excellent benefits; combining it with breathwork can provide an adrenaline spike to release white blood cells. Overview of "Powerhouse" book: it offers techniques for fueling and energizing mitochondria to optimize health and performance; emphasizes the importance of having daily energy to pursue goals and help others. Importance of adding tools to the coaching toolbox: hosts emphasize adding breathwork and cold therapy to the toolbox, especially during times of high stress and burnout; highlight the benefits of breathwork for digestion, stress management, and sleep. So, whether you are an athlete looking to improve your performance or someone who simply wants to optimize their health, this episode is a must-watch. So, sit back, relax, and join us for an enlightening discussion with Dr. Greg Wells on Health Hacks with Mark L. White. More about this episode: We have all faced unprecedented challenges during the pandemic, and now more than ever, it is critical to prioritize our health and wellbeing while maintaining high performance. To address this reality the purpose and focus of the book is on helping people to have better energy and health via optimizing our mitochondria so that we can all create an upward spiral of wellness and peak performance. When we look into the physiology it becomes apparent that our health and human potential is 4 billion years in the making. Our mitochondria are small structures in all our cells that create the energy that we use to move, to think, to perform and to lead. The wonderful thing is that we can make create more of them to get more energy, we can make them stronger so we are more resilient, and we can heal them so we can be healthier in mind and body. The key principles in Powerhouse are all based on the physiology of “hormesis” – simply that a little is good, a lot is not. For example, 3 minutes of meditation each day can improve brain function. Five minutes of cold water can sharpen your focus and improve mental health. A 15-minute walk decreases your risk of cancer but also improves problem solving and innovation thinking. Small micro wins daily can lead to exponential gains in health and wellbeing. The Powerhouse book is grounded in the latest scientific research and demonstrates how to elevate your energy, shift from tension to flow, and build your performance capacity. Through the framework of breathe, move, energize, and thrive, I've tried my best to show people how to take concrete steps towards healthy high performance. Key Learnings: • Why the science of human energy is 4 billion years in the making.  • How to breathe for relaxation, focus and consistent energy. • How activity can spark concentration, creativity, and innovation. • How stress can be a powerful spark for positive mental and physical growth. • What practices lead to a life where we can thrive personally and professionally.
