Introducing Beyond All Repair, a new WBUR podcast hosted by Amory Sivertson. This series tells the story of a murder, but also the woman who was accused of that murder, Sophia. Sophia was newly married and six months pregnant when she was charged with murdering her mother-in-law in 2002. She gave birth to a son in jail that she hasn't seen since, and for the last three years, she's been telling me her story in hopes of getting justice for her mother-in-law, of having a chance of meeting her son, and of finally being believed. This is the first chapter of Beyond All Repair. Episode 2 is already waiting for you. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

This week we're sharing one of our fave episodes from July 2016. William Shakespeare is perhaps the most prolific, controversial, and creative writer in English history. But, as popular as he is, it's still surprising just how many podcasts there are about the Bard. Perhaps our ongoing fascination with him is because his work is still being explored and interpreted in fresh ways. For example: what do Helen Keller, Sigmund Freud and Malcolm X have in common? They all believed Shakespeare was a FRAUD. We'll learn more in the podcast Our Fake History. Then the answer to the age old question: "If you could create a fantasy baseball team out of Shakespeare's most famous characters, who would you choose?" The podcast No Holds Bard offers a heated debate. Featuring: Shakespeare Unlimited, Studio 360, Our Fake History, Denzel Washington Is The Greatest Actor Of All Time Period, Kind World, No Holds Bard

So how am I doing well? Um, yeah, um, challenging, um, to be honest, uh, [00:00:08] Barry: what's going on? [00:00:09] Matt: Yeah... So my mom right now is in hospice, so she's transitioning and I'm not dealing with it. Well, So an episode on kindness is going to be especially kind of challenging for me. Um, one of my favorite shows, which shouldn't be one of my favorite shows, but it is; it's "After Life" with Ricky Gervais , which is about a man who loses his wife and is falling over the whole time. And the only time he cries um, in the show, cause he's, he's, he's a, he's just an ass to everyone. Like he has so much hate and so much rage and so much, and he just doesn't care anymore. And he's like, and he starts crying and they're like, oh, don't cry. He's like, it's not the world I have a problem with it's kindness I can't handle. [00:00:56] Barry: That's interesting. [00:00:57] Matt: So when somebody is kind to him, it kind of tears apart, this big ginormous shield he has around him, so he can't be hurt. Um, and that's kind of where my head is at. I'm kind of going bouncing back and forth. Um, you know, my kids, they understand, but don't understand. And, and yeah, it's, it's, it's hard. It's been, it's been challenging so [00:01:22] Barry: Is your mom nearby? [00:01:23] Matt: No, my mom's in C
Remember those OxiClean commercials with the in-your-face pitchman? That was Billy Mays. Mays died years ago, but he's lived on in meme form. Why? We ask his son Billy Mays III, his biggest frenemy, and a host of others to explain why someone who was squarely in the age of television continues to appear online in strange and provocative ways. It's the story of an American staple whose consumerist existence belies a personality that, in the end, was surprisingly wholesome.

Sometimes the world can seem unbearable. Today, beyond introducing you to new friends, I want to focus on one thing we have witnessed on earth, to hopefully give light and encouragement for all of us to look towards the beauty and magic out there. This is our first roundtable with great friends to introduce you to from around the world. Transcript [00:00:00] music Fawn, and Matt: [00:00:00] Hello friends. Welcome to our friendly world. This is, this is Fawn and Matt, we are starting something new today. It's a series that we're calling connected. It's all about how we are all interconnected. We have a round table here. We're going to do this every week. We're going to have amazing friends. And we're all from different walks of life. We're all quite different. We all have different jobs on this planet. And the whole point is to make our circle grow, to make our friendship circle grow. Most of us here have never, ever met one another in person and we all have different takes on life. Today we're starting this whole thing. This is our very, very first episode. And when you scroll through every episode will be called "CONNECTED", followed by [00:01:00] or word, and today's word is kindness. To start off, I want to talk about our connections to one another. What we're starting here with this round table is much bigger than this little episode. What we're doing is we're going to start conversations, having to do with everything in life, from money to you, name it. And everyone here at this round table has their particular expertise. And if you're out there listening and you want to join us, please send me an email. And we'll, we'll gladly, gladly accept you into the round table. We're sitting here right now at our kitchen table, and we're surrounded by some amazing friends. We have Beth Hewitt, Dr. Nii Darko. We have KJ Nasrul. [00:02:00] We have our beautiful friend, Katie, our beautiful friend, Paul, and some of them you've heard on our episodes before there are other people coming next week. Kindness. What is that? That's our theme today and I'm here to bring all the aspects of life together. We're all touched by money. We're all touched by health, where we all have our rituals. We have life and we share a life together. The truth is that we are all connected. And that is this whole topic. This whole topic of connection is that it's to have a get together. Are interconnected family. We're going to converse about it as friends. We all have different perspectives. I'm sure if we really got into this deep, I'm sure whoever's at the table. We all have different political beliefs. We have different ideas. We've all seen different things [00:03:00] walking on the earth. And the point is to practice conversation. Sometimes it may become uncomfortable, but we're in the comfort of our home. All of us right now. And you're home. You are ourhome, you are my home. We are friends. And no matter what you say, it will be treated with respect. You will be treated with respect and you will be heard. And I think that's the key these days. It's the key always is to hear each other, to see each other and to be heard. And that's what this is all about. Thank you. Thank you friends for being with us today. , I have, we've all walked, walked the earth for awhile. I'm going to start with a little question and then. I'm going to let that question sit for awhile and then I'm going to have everyone introduce [00:04:00] themselves. The question today is, so we've all been on the earth for awhile. We've all walked the earth and we've all seen somethings. And I really like, I know most of you here. I know all of you here, but what I admire about everybody here is you all are so positive. And the way you describe things is quite beautiful. I'm a phot

So check this out. Kindness. It's from the old English word. How would you pronounce that? Matt? Jacob and Jason is G E C Y N. The means kind nature, race related to kin. Family it's from the prodo Germanic. Coon does, is that how I would pronounce that map? What do you think? Which means family race from PI roots? Jen, Jean, I'm sorry guys. I can't pronounce [00:05:00] things. English is not my first language. Either give birth begets with derivatives, referring to procreation and familial and tribal groups. Here's the other definition. It comes from the old, this is the etymology of kindness. It comes from the old English and is constructed from the adjective kind. And the suffix ness kind comes from the middle English, kin old English. How do you pronounce that? And I was like genocide. She, and it meant it meant friendly. Well, disposed tender ness is announced suffix middle English ness and is used to denote a quality or state when attached to an adjective. Right? So originally kind

Today, we present the very first episode of Anything for Selena, a new podcast from WBUR and Futuro Studios. Growing up along the US-Mexico border, Maria Garcia felt torn between her two identities as Mexican and American. But then, something changed her life. She discovered Selena — the Mexican-American pop icon who proved she didn’t have to choose. In the premiere episode of “Anything for Selena,” host Maria Garcia explores how Selena helped Maria find her own place in the world.
Listen to the trailer for "Anything For Selena," a new podcast from WBUR and Futuro Studios coming in January 2021. Subscribe now so you don't miss it! About The Show: On March 31, 1995, nine-year-old Maria Garcia came home to find her mother glued to the TV, tears rolling down her rosy cheeks. The phone kept ringing. Relatives in Mexico and the States wanted to know if Maria’s family was watching, too. American networks and Mexican programming aired the same top story. Selena Quintanilla, the Grammy-winning ascending Mexican American popstar had been killed — swiftly, violently — by the president of her fan club. The story shook the country and changed Maria’s life. In "Anything For Selena," host Maria Garcia goes on an intimate, revelatory quest to understand how Selena has become a potent symbol for tensions around race, class and body politics in the United States. The series weaves Maria’s personal story as a queer, first-generation Mexican immigrant with cultural analysis, history and politics to explore how, 25 years after her death, Selena remains an unparalleled vessel for understanding Latino identity and American belonging.
The perception that the U.S.-Mexico border’s been effectively sealed shut because of the pandemic is wrong. Lots of people are still crossing. Actually, the biggest, most dramatic change in who can’t cross right now; you’re not going to find those folks at the official ports of entry. Instead, you have to look inside migrant shelters, at the refugees who can’t seek asylum in the U.S. right now and are instead stuck in border towns. So that's what we do today. We talk to a migrant stuck at the border in Tijuana, and a doctor from Los Angeles who's trying to help. About The Show: “Port Of Entry” is about the unexplored subcultures, creativity and struggles at the U.S.-Mexico border. The KPBS podcast tells personal stories from people whose lives are shaped by the tension reverberating around the wall. This is a show for border babies, urban explorers or those who wonder what happens when two cultures are both separated and intertwined.

In this week's episode I address the amount of hate FILLING our social media feeds every day and how we can be aware and kind in the middle of all of it! People may think I’m overreacting or I’m too sensitive but here’s the thing, I think the fact that a lot of people aren’t reacting to it is dangerous to me and that’s why I want to talk about it today. Five Minute Friday is something we do each week to keep you in the loop about what’s going on in the news. It's important to be informed because if we don’t know what’s going on in the world, we will be less likely to engage in conversation or formulate opinions. Your opinion shapes your reality and it's crucial that our reality makes a positive impact on our world.

Why do people risk their own lives to save a stranger? Why do we share food or give money to charity? The human capacity for altruism has been a puzzle for scientists since Darwin. In this episode of Origin Stories, primatologist Joan Silk explores the evolution of altruism and cooperation. In our Being Human Bonus segment, we share a story of human kindness from Erika Lantz and WBUR’s Kind World. Origin Stories is a project of The Leakey Foundation.
