On November 14, 2024, we interviewed 22 time NCAA Champion Coach Anson Dorrance from University of North Carolina Women's Soccer. At the time the Tar Heels were in the midst of another winning season, and Dorrance had resigned his head coaching duties, handing the reigns to interim coach Damon Nahas, Asst. coach Tracy Leone and GK Coach Chris Ducar. As the third assistant coach, Dorrance fulfilled a role he had never done before, and 24 hours prior to us recording this podcast, we witnessed the Tar Heels become NCAA Champions for the 23rd time! In this most timely of interviews, we discuss the championship with Anson, the qualities of the new coaching staff (Nahas was named Head Coach just prior to the championship game), the importance of love in your coaching, and so much more. This is as close as it gets to conducting an hour long on field interview with a national champion! If you have not yet listened to Part 1 of our talk, check out Episode 403. Anson Dorrance recently stepped down as Head Coach the University of North Carolina Women's Soccer program. In his career spanning 1979-2024, he won over 1100 games, 21 NCAA Championships, 7x NCAA Coach of the Year awards, 12 ACC Coach of the Year Awards, and even one NCAA Men's Coach of the Year award. He also led the US Women's National Team to the 1991 World Cup Championship. He has published 3 books (Vision of a Champion, The Man Watching, and Training Soccer Champions) and has a wonderful podcast where he interviews the best of the best, the Vision of a Champion Podcast: https://ansondorrancesoccer.com/podcast/ While we spoke today, we all decided this would be a two part interview, so today we recorded part 1. We took a deep dive into his decision to retire as head coach, staying on as the third assistant this season and the new responsibilities it comes with, and then pivoted to self-awareness. His insight into helping players and programs to succeed was incredible, and we dove deep into the importance of getting everyones personal narrative and the team narrative to the truth, to reality, and away from excuses. Even coaches! Get ready to take some notes! THE CHAMPION SPORTS PARENT IS AVAILABLE ON AMAZON!! WE ARE LIVE! This episode of Security Stories is a little different from usual, but for good reason! With the help of some very special guests, we take a comprehensive look back at the Not Petya cyber attack, the Sandworm hackers, and the context behind this act of cyber warfare. First to join us is Noureen Njoroge, a senior cybersecurity engineer and threat intelligence analyst at Cisco. Noureen is a passionate advocate for women and minorities in the IT industry, and is the founder of Cisco's global mentoring program, as well as the president of North Carolina Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) Affiliate chapter. We learn about Noureen's passion for mentoring, as well as her thoughts on the threat landscape. Then we're joined by Andy Greenberg, senior cybersecurity investigative journalist for Wired Magazine, and author of the book "Sandworm: A New Era of Cyberwar and the Hunt for the Kremlin's Most Dangerous Hackers". The book tells the true story of the desperate hunt to identify and track an elite team of Russian agents who are bent on digital sabotage. It starts out as a detective story but it soon turns into a disaster story as the truth starts to come to the fore.Andy also talks to Hazel about how he spent time in Russia and Ukraine, gathering sources, and learning about this new emergence and type of cyber criminal. And he has a fascinating take on how the hacker culture has evolved in recent years. Finally, we're joined by senior threat analysts from the Cisco Talos team, including Craig Williams, Matt Olny and Mitch Neff. We chat to them about what happened on the day of the attack (June 27th 2017), the process the investigative team used to find out what was really happening, and what impact the attack has left on the threat landscape and the world at large. This really is a fascinating episode with some incredible guests, who each share their insights, experience and advice for the benefit of the wider cybersecurity community.
“We need each other. Cybersecurity is a global event and we need all the brains,” says Noreen Njoroge. “Threat actors don’t care where you are from or what your social status is. They are there to attack everybody. As cybersecurity specialists, we should also have that mindset. It’s a community effort. I have to help my brother, my sister, my coworker, my friend, know how to better defend themselves against attacks.” Njoroge imbues that same philosophy into her cybersecurity mentoring projects. As a Security Threat Engineer at Cisco, President of North Carolina Women in Cybersecurity, and leader of the Mentors and Mentees Group for Women in Cybersecurity, she has a unique perspective on the humans who make up the cybersecurity industry. Today, she sits down with our Host and Principal Security Analyst, Jen Stone, to discuss:How making more “room at the table” for diverse thinking strengthens our defensive stance and improves cybersecurity around the globe. The qualities that make for a good cybersecurity analyst and how to get the most out of a mentor/mentee relationship. How the industry can recruit more security analysts with diverse skills, strengths, and backgrounds.Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS)2020 SecurityMetrics HIPAA Guide2020 SecurityMetrics PCI Guide
