Lee (Vassilis) Simon was born in 1954 in Melbourne to Greek immigrant parents. At age five, he changed his first name to Lee, as "it was easier to use." He worked as an audio engineer from 1971 at local radio station, 3AW. His first job as a DJ was for radio 2BE in Bega, New South Wales followed by stints at 7HT (Hobart), 2NX (Newcastle) and 2SM (Sydney). Simon returned to Melbourne as a DJ and announcer for radio station 3XY (from 1975) and then EON FM (from 1980), where he became their programme director. He hosted Nightmoves, claimed as Australia's first adult and album-orientated music TV program for HSV 7, from 13 May 1977. Initially trialled for six weeks it was subsequently transmitted nationally via the Seven Network for late Friday night programming from about midnight to 1:00 a.m. By 1982 it was being broadcast on Network 10 at about 10:30 p.m. Monday nights. In 1985 it was re-branded as Rockit for the Nine Network.  In 1995 Simon, as Program Director, was instrumental in Triple M Melbourne (formerly EON FM) beginning live radio broadcasts of AFL matches. As from 2010 he presented the retro music programme, Rock of Ages on Triple M. In 2018 he retired and was inducted into the Australian Commercial Radio Awards Hall of Fame later that year.

Ruttsy left alone in the studio to play his fave Australian Indie bands – Bad Dreems epic song Jack, Beddy Rays great song Sobercoaster, The Pretty Things song Serve Yourself & Bad Dreems song By My Side. I'm acting like Lee Simon at this point! Ruttsy chatted with Kirstan Corben, Executive Director of the Danny Frawley Centre. We covered what the Centre is, what it offers & how it is helping improve physical & mental health outcomes across the community. We discussed the features of the facility, Kirstan's background & that of her team, the aims & objectives of the Centre & how the DFC engages into the community. I had a ton of fun on this episode. I interviewed award winning playwright Levy Lee Simon. Currently, an actor and playwright in Los Angeles, California, Simon received his MFA from the University of Iowa Theater Program in the late 90's. During that time, he finished a play on the great Haitian revolutionary Toussaint Louverture, who led the only successful slave revolt in the Western Hemisphere. We also discuss how he became interested in Toussaint Louverture and the other Big Three of the Haitian Revolution, Jean Dessalines and Henry Christophe. I also was intrigued by Defile (Marie Sainte Dédé Bazile), one of the key women warriors of the Haitian Revolution. Her story will make you wanting to learn more. I am absolutely fascinated Haiti and this interview made me even more interested in traveling to Haiti someday. This week on Disciplinn, we release a "pre-covid" interview (from early March 2020) with the living legend Lee Simon. Lee is an absolute character, pioneer and much loved and vaunted figure of the radio industry. He has been inducted into the Australian Radio Hall of Fame, interviewed musical legends like Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant and INXS (to name but a few). He has worked with industry legends like Molly Meldrum, Michael Gudinski and Eddie McGuire. Lee has provided the voice track, and soundtrack, of countless people's lives. Lee has been involved in radio for a hell of a long time, and as you'll hear, he was even a shareholder in Australia's first FM licence and associated radio station. It's not a case of right place at the right time, as Lee may have you believe. Lee followed his passion and expertly navigated the waters. Lee sustained 40 plus years at the one radio network, whilst others put behind the microphone and behind the scenes came and went with insights, such as "kind of stay in your lane" and "look the whole way around you for influences as they come from the strangest places". Lee Simon is a Game Changer in the true sense of the word.Last week, Lee was inducted into the Australian Radio Hall of Fame. His career began as a music announcer where he worked at 2SM Sydney and 3XY Melbourne during their halcyon days of the 1970’s. Lee went on to become Australia’s first FM program director at EON-FM, where he helped launch the D-Gen to radio in the late 80’s. He then followed that success with The Richard Stubbs breakfast show in the early 90’s and introduced football to MMM in 1997.
