Last Tuesday (Aug 22) the Music Australia Council was announced. It was up and running as of Thursday (Aug 24), upon commencement of the Creative Australia Act 2023, reps say. As previously reported, the advisory council (effectively the board of Music Australia) is loaded with music industry experts, including Michael Chugg, Nathan McLay, Petrina Convey, and Dr Sophie Payten (aka Gordi), among others. ARIA and PPCA CEO Annabelle Herd said the Council “is very welcome news, particularly given the great deal of knowledge, experience and proven ability between those appointed." “Now it all comes down to execution,” “Now is the time to think big, consult wide, and deliver the solutions that Australian recording artists and industry professionals deserve; restoring the infrastructure to help them achieve sustainable careers at home and providing a greater platform for them to reach new audiences by cutting through an increasingly saturated market. “Australia's contemporary music industry is an incredible incubator for world-class talent. But for the world to discover that talent, we need the right strategic support and investment. There's no time to waste.”

A pioneer of the Australian music industry, Michael Chugg or Chuggi as he is affectionately known, has garnered a reputation both locally and internationally as one of the country's most prominent music promoters, and is a name synonymous with some of biggest tours to have come through Australia and New Zealand over the past 50 years. Chugg's foray into the music industry began in his hometown of Launceston, Tasmania in 1962, where he cut his teeth from the age of 15 running dances and managing bands until he relocated to Melbourne in 1969. In 1979 together with Michael Gudinski and Phil Jacobsen, Chugg co-founded the Frontier Touring Company. Their first tours were with Squeeze and The Police, with Frontier going on to become the biggest promoter in Australia at the time, touring the likes of Frank Sinatra, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Guns N' Roses, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and more. In 2000, Chugg went out on his own to launch Michael Chugg Entertainment, which later became Chugg Entertainment. Over the past twenty years, the company has toured over 600 Australian and international artists, making Chugg one of the most prominent and respected promoters not only in Australia, but also around the world. The numerous industry accolades that Michael Chugg has picked up over the years are testament to his incredible impact on the Australian music industry; he has been named as Pollstar's International Promoter of the Year four times, has twice picked up the Best Promoter gong at the International Live Music Conference, received the prestigious ARIA Icon Award in 2019, and has a multitude of Billboard Awards, Helpmann Awards, Country Music Awards, Musexpo Awards and many more under his belt. In June 1998, Michael was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia on the Queen's birthday, in recognition of his contribution to the Australian music industry and his philanthropic involvement with various charities. Chugg's philanthropic undertakings are extensive; he has been heavily involved in developing and co-promoting some of the country's biggest charity events to date, launching Wave Aid (2005), Live Earth (2007) and Sound Relief (2009), which raised millions of dollars toward respective charities. He was a Board Member of the Prince of Wales Children's Foundation, Support Act Ltd and F.A.C.E. (Entertainment for Australian Armed Forces), and sat on the NSW Arts Advisory Council Board. Additionally, Chugg is a trustee of the Golden Stave Foundation committee, which has over the years raised millions for the Paraquad Association, Camperdown Children's Hospital, the Shepard Centre, Nordoff Robbins and the Starlight Foundation.
As Apple iPods, then iPhones, Music streaming services like Spotify and now COVID-19 have all seriously disrupted the music industry over recent decades, how has Michael Chugg navigated these potential minefields, and turned the internet from a disrupter into an opportunity for musicians? And is there a future for the live music scene, when life and borders open back up post-COVID? Well for an entrepreneur who has demonstrated such currency, impact and longevity in the industry, his insights into the path for success for young musicians might surprise you. In Part 2 of our interview he also reveals some of the work in the music and major events landscape of which he is most proud, not just for the sheer entertainment it provided to audiences, but for its ability to really mean something, for others in need. And that includes his largely unsung role helping turn the Paralympic Games into a world-class, quality, hugely popular event. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Michael Chugg has been touring local and international artists for decades and knows first hand the effects of the Covid-19 on the music industry.
How 15 year old Michael Chugg transformed his love of music, and particularly Aussie rock music, into a major business empire, that ended up bringing to Australia, promoting, staging concerts and touring many of THE biggest music stars & bands in the world. Stars like Elton John, Robbie Williams, Bob Dylan, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the Police, Dixie Chicks, Madonna and so many more. Michael Chugg backed himself, built relationships in the music business not just locally, but in the UK and the US as well. So how did he do it? By never being afraid of hard work, doing everything that was needed to put on a major concert tour, and he means EVERYTHING. And what are his insights into resilience and longevity in a fast-changing music industry? Always putting the customer – that is, the acts and the fans – first, he says. They are the most important piece of the pie, and if they are right, well, the money would follow. Michael Chugg started Michael Chugg Entertainment in the late 70's; then co-founded Frontier Touring with the late Michael Gudinski; and more recently he started Chugg. Entertainment on his own. Over 5 decades later, he's still taking risks, still scouting and supporting young Aussie music talent, and in this time of the pandemic when musicians are joining together to urge us all to get vaccinated, Michael Chugg is still optimistic about the post-COVID-19 live music scene. Hope you enjoy Part 1 of my chat with Michael Chugg. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Elton John and plenty of others in between, international music promoter Michael Chugg has spent the past 50-plus years working with the biggest artists on the planet. In their chat, Chugg shares with Matt his remarkable journey. From how he first got started in the music industry, to the artist he would never work with again. Rumors started the other day about Sir Elton John coming to Townsville - to get some clarity around it - Aussie Music Icon and Promoter, Michael Chugg called Pricey to give him the official word!
The 2000s were a great time for Australian live music lovers with some of the biggest artists of the decade touring the nation. It was also a time when many of these acts were financed by an elaborate Ponzi scheme. With an exclusive interview with the man behind the fraud, Mario Christodoulou reveals the threats and behind-the-scenes deals that fans never get to see. Welcome to the brutal and high risk world of concert promotion.
Viagogo have hit back over claims they are scamming people over Elton John tickets, saying that they offer better prices to his concerts than the legitimate re-seller site.Legendary rocket Elton John is set to play three shows in New Zealand early next year, with standard tickets ranging from $130 through to $330.Fans have been left distraught after tickets were snapped up quickly, with the Mission Estate concert in Napier selling out entirely during the pre-sale. Yesterday, promoter Michael Chugg told Andrew Dickens that those who miss out should not buy tickets from Viagogo as they would not be honoured."Half the time they don't even have the tickets. They're taking the money and speculating that they're going to get tickets."Viagogo today responded to Chugg's claim. In a statement, a spokesperson claims that "a majority of tickets" are being sold through the most expensive VIP and Platinum channels, shutting out most customers."In fact, last week so called “platinum tickets” were already on offer on Ticketmaster (ahead of the Elton John fan club presale) for upwards of $1,000 per ticket," the spokesperson said. He says that Viagogo provides a competitive price to those packages, "which are just window dressing to charge triple the face value for a cheap glass of wine and a lanyard". “The tickets sold on Viagogo’s platform are genuine tickets that have been sold on by the original ticket purchaser in good faith."Refusing people entry for using resold tickets is "unfair, unenforceable and illegal", the spokesperson said. A second Mission Estate concert has been announced.
The Australian promoter of Elton John's upcoming New Zealand tour has addressed the ticketing problems that plagued yesterday's Napier sales and left fans who missed out feeling angry.Michael 'Chuggi' Chugg dispelled rumours of gremlins in the ticketing system or bugs instead saying that there was just too many people wanting to go to the show."I've seen a few complaints about people not being able to get tickets and all that stuff but when you've got a 25,000 capacity venue and there's 60,000 people trying to buy tickets obviously a lot are going to miss out," he said. "And that's what happened.""From the reports I'm seeing this morning it was basically just too many people."One particular source of ire for fans was waiting online to buy tickets and then finding themselves being bumped down the queue."When you sell out you need to tell the 15,000 to 20,000 people that are still online that you have sold out, rather than just all of a sudden there's zero tickets," he said. "But you know, everyone keeps learning from this procedure.""Hey, let's face it, an hour's sell out is pretty unusual and it just shows the incredible strength that Sir Elton's got and what these final shows mean to people."Chugg also had advice - and a warning - for all those who missed out on the Mission show and for any people who miss out when tickets go onsale for Dunedin and Auckland tomorrow morning at 9am."I'd say to people don't panic and don't go and pay $900 for a $300 ticket. We're a year away and with the size of the show and the production there's always going to be more tickets released," he said. "Your son could decide to get married on the day of the show and you're going to have to sell your tickets. You can officially resell your tickets if you can't go to the concert. So there will be tickets across the year. Don't panic."But don't go and buy tickets off Viagogo or any of the other reseller sites. The tickets won't be honoured. Half the time they don't even have the tickets. They're taking the money and speculating that they're going to get tickets."In response to the criticism, Viagogo reiterated it was a "marketplace and doesn't buy or sell tickets".A statement from the company said it was a platform for third party sellers to sell tickets to event goers and did not set ticket prices."Sellers set their own prices, which may be above or below the original face value. Where demand is high and tickets are limited, prices increase. All tickets on Viagogo are valid and it is perfectly legal to resell a ticket or give it to someone else if you want to.""The main concern for me is that people don't get ripped off," he said.Chugg also hinted that there is a possibility that Elton John may add an extra show or two to the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour."People are asking me if there's going to be other shows but the itineraries very tight. We're basically coming from Australia to New Zealand and then going back to Australia," he said. "But you never know. Elton loves playing and on this final world tour he really wants to make sure he gets to as many of the real music fans, his fans, as he can. So we'll see what happens."Mission Estate has admitted its ticketing system simply couldn't cope with "overwhelming" demand for tickets to next year's Elton John concert in Napier. The concert is now officially sold out, with all 25,000 tickets snapped up in less than an hour.Four per cent of fans in line were pushed to the back of the queue in the first 15 minutes of the sale, because the queuing system was "overrun", Mission Estate spokeswoman Sandra Roberts said.As the pre-sale site went live at 9am there were over 45,000 people waiting on the website to buy tickets."The Queue-it system is used to moderate the amount of people going on to the Mission Estate purchasing site and it was simply overwhelmed," said Roberts. There was little that Mission could do for those affected by the site malfunction, she said.Mission apologis...

Michael Chugg – aka ‘Chuggy’ - is one of the legendary characters of Australian music and the founder & executive chairman of music and touring company, Chugg Entertainment. Having managed and toured bands since the 60s, Chuggy’s life in music has seen him work with many of Australia and the world’s biggest music artists. From starting out promoting bands and dances in Launceston, to the world’s great acts such as Guns ‘N’ Roses, Robbie Williams and Elton John, Michael’s commitment to music has been unending and unrelenting. In Part 1 of Peter and Michael’s conversation, they look at Michael’s start with music in Launceston, his jump to Melbourne and then on to Sydney. These were the early days of the modern day business of music management, promotion and touring. Chuggy gives Peter his inside glimpse on those days. By learning on the job, Michael and counterparts set the stage for the music and touring business that is alive and thriving today.
The 1970s meant a new era of Australian music. The Sunbury Rock Festival in the early 1970s was Australia’s equivalent to Woodstock. Around the same time, the touring scene started to take off in Sydney after years of decline with Michael one of those leading the charge. The late 70s then saw a new wave of touring from the UK, with acts such as The Police. This was a period where Michael established his touring and management credentials for both Australian and overseas acts. Peter Rix and Michael Chugg look back at what happened to Chuggy at Sunbury, the growing music and touring scene through the 70s and his work in helping take Aussie acts overseas and bringing a new wave of British acts down under.
The modern day era saw Michael Chugg’s music life take on different turns – touring new acts and new genres, breaking new artists in Australia and a return to managing artists. Chuggy had to get hands on with artists - playing a role in breaking Robbie Williams and Sheppard into Australia. In Part 3 of their conversation, Peter and Chuggy look at the ups and downs of modern day touring and the music business. It’s not common for a touring man to help break artists onto the radio and into the charts, but it was a challenge Chuggy took up. Peter and Michael also look back at the infamous moment where Chuggy took to the stage at the Guns N Roses concert at Sydney’s Eastern Creek and how he might have done things differently a second time around. Note: This interview was recorded prior to the passing away of country music promoter Rob Potts and musician and journalist Iain Shedden in late 2017.
