You never would have guessed that Marin Canaday suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder growing up. In Elementary School, it began with her being a complete worry wort and people pleaser. Shame would immediately overtake her little heart if she felt she had done something wrong or imperfect, holding her thoughts captive and increasing her fear of messing things up. In Junior High, her OCD morphed into being consumed by germs, and she started compulsive hand washing, among other sterilizing idiosyncrasies. Volleyball and studying distracted her mind long enough to give her a reprieve from the OCD monster within her. She excelled at both volleyball and academics and went on to become a collegiate athlete, team captain, all-American, and National Champion. Once school and volleyball were a thing of the past, and there was nothing left to distract Marin, she was left with trying to fend off symptoms of OCD. She married a wonderful man and began having children of her own, but she became overwhelmed with her mental health disorder and cried out to God for help. In her inbox the following morning was an email, and the focus verse was Exodus 14:14, "The Lord will fight for you, you only need to be still." It didn't take away all the symptoms immediately, but God had claimed her fight which gave her hope to keep going. She had been nudged to try a therapist and/or psychiatrist but felt resistant to the treatment because of the stigma surrounding it. With feet dragging, she let down the walls of mental health professionals and finally received the help she truly needed. With therapy and medication, she is now able to handle and manage her symptoms. The fight or flight response is hindered so she can think clearly and work through the racing thoughts and feelings. Marin has now taken her experience and written a children's book called, My Little Monster, Combating OCD. Her hope in writing this is to let children know they are not alone in the struggle with their mental health and the importance of talking about it. Marin Canaday I am the author of, My Little Monster and soon to come, The Very Best Me. My books aim to help anyone struggling with OCD (be it the person themself or support people). I want to encourage those living with mental illness that there is HOPE! God is bigger than the struggle! Although the books are not faith based, the testimony that goes along beside them is nothing but God!

On January 29, 2010, a group of ten American Baptist missionaries from Idaho attempted to cross the Haiti-Dominican Republic border with 33 Haitian children. The group, known as the New Life Children's Refuge, did not have proper authorization for transporting the children and were arrested on kidnapping charges. The missionaries denied any wrongdoing and claimed that they were rescuing orphans and leading them to a Dominican hotel which was being transformed into an orphanage. Nine of the ten missionaries were later released but NLCR founder Laura Silsby remained incarcerated in Haiti. By the time she went to trial on May 13 the charges had been reduced to "arranging irregular travel" and the prosecution sought a 6-month prison term. On May 17, she was found guilty and sentenced to the time served in jail prior to the trial. #crimehub #truecrime #truecrimestories Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dr. Ayanna Peake is originally from Louisville, KY. Dr. Peake- completed her Psy.D. in Applied Psychology at Western Kentucky University, her MS/Specialist degree in School Psychology at the University of Rhode Island, and her BA degree in Educational Studies: Human Development at Brown University. Although she recently accomplished her childhood goal to become Dr. Ayanna Peake-in August 2021, Dr. Peake- has worked as a school psychologist for 16 years. Ayanna has served as a school psychologist for students in Pre-K to 12th grade in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Kentucky since 2005. She is very passionate about removing barriers to learning so that school is a safe place for all students regardless of their background, and all students have access to social mobility through education. Through her work in public education, Dr. Peake- has noticed how mental health needs negatively impact education and that there are disparities in access to high-quality mental health services for disadvantaged communities. Dr. Peake- aspires to provide quality mental health services for children and families in underserved communities to address this disparity to access and to remove barriers to learning and self-actualization. Ayanna has most recently begun training to specialize in working with parents of children with disruptive behaviors and youth impacted by trauma. These are two areas that negatively impact school and overall quality of life for the child and family. Dr. Peake- aspires to provide quality mental health services with compassion and integrity so that her clients are able to cope with life in safe and healthy ways. Her ultimate goal is for her clients and/or students & their families to become empowered to advocate for their needs so that they can accomplish their dreams. Her hobbies include reading, traveling, cooking, trying new cuisines, hiking with her dogs, and domestic & international community service or missions work. Her favorite international destination so far is Broșteni, Romania where she works with Bread of Life Children's Home & Youth Transition Program. She has served there for 4 summers and hopes to return again next summer. As a Christian and ordained minister, she attributes her passion for helping others as an example of her faith in action. Second to international missions is Dr. Peake-'s passion for serving in children's ministry. She formerly served as a co-pastor in children's ministry. Last but not least, Dr. Peake works to give back to her local community by connecting youth to co-curricular activities to expand their horizons and build their character. She often participated in such programs as a youth and throughout her schooling, and she believes that she is at this point in her life and career because of the sacrifices and generosity of those who've gone before her. She wants the youth she mentors to understand that their present sacrifices can definitely help them reach their personal and professional goals. Have you ever felt frustrated by investing 8-10 hours in reading a book, only to feel its lessons slipping away as each day goes by? Unless you’re Rain Man, I’m pretty sure you can relate. Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer amount of books that you “need to read?” I personally have a queue of over 30 books that I’ve already purchased and awaiting my attention. I am not joking. Today’s episode is all about simplifying your unique process for selecting books which books you invest your time in reading…and a few practical techniques to ensure you retain more of the information you absorb. Here to help us do that is Juvoni Beckford. Juvoni is a software engineer at Google, and a disciple of the systems and habit based approach to living an optimal lifestyle. I spent 3 hours in a van with Juvoni on our way to a men’s retreat a few months back… …and when he started talking about his elaborate, and ingenious, process for selecting, reading and retaining 60 books a year…I knew I needed to bring him to you guys. In this Episode: Why you need an intentional process for determining which books you say yes to (a 6-10 hour investment of your time) Why you need what Juvoni calls a “book purgatory” – where potential books go to “meet their judgment day.” Why 1 and 5 star reviews are just noise…and the well-written 3-star reviews hold the biggest clues as to whether you should read the book Why you should know who the author’s “masters and students” are before reading the book How you should look at book authors as access to mentors Why these two factors are critical to your ability to retain information: 1) Medium: Hard copy, Kindle or Audiobook 2) Context: On the train, in bed, listening at the gym etc RESOURCES Juvoni’s 6 Books on Life Children of Time by Adrian Tchiaskovsky (listen on Audible) The One Thing by Gary Keller (read in print) Denial of Death by Ernest Becker (read in print) Algorithms to Live By by Brian Christian (read on Kindle or eBook) Thinking in Systems by Donella Meadows (read in print) Finite and Infinite Games by James Carse (read on Kindle or eBook) Juvoni’s book reviews: https://Juvoni.com/books Juvoni on Goodreads: Juvoni’s Book List on Goodreads Juvoni’s Blog: https://juvoni.com Juvoni on Twitter: https://twitter.com/juvoni

I recently had the opportunity to spend time in three third world countries.. I'm sharing the first lesson I took from it.
One of the greatest gifts God gives to us is a child, because it is the clearest picture of His image and innocence we have on Earth. Furthermore, allowing us to participate in the creation of life is a huge responsibility that He has entrusted to us. In this message, we will see God's plan for each child from the time it is conceived to the time he or she enters the world and the important role adults play in protecting that child along the way.

Some of us as humans share a consistent desire to control an outcome, manage people's lives for them and step into problem solve even when we aren't invited. Although the application of this message is much wider, we do include the primary example of parenting, helicopter parenting, with some thoughts on advocating for our children and helping to raise them to Be their own self, to support a well adjusted, happy, "successful" adult.
