Welcome back Libration Nation! This week, we're delving into a classic piece of Southern writing with The Prince of Tides by the remarkable Pat Conroy. My guest this week is the amazing, award winning author, Laura Elliott, who I had the pleasure of interviewing while we both were attending the Virginia Library Association Conference last month. Laura really helped us hit a home run with tying the drink in, because she owns a copy of Pat Conroy's cookbook, and shared with me the recipe for Pat Conroy's Iced Fruit tea!Laura shared with me the ways that Pat Conroy impacted her writing, particularly her historical fiction novel Louisa June and the Nazis in the Waveswhich is set in tidewater Virginia and also won the Virginia Library Association Cardinal Cup Award in 2023. Listening to Laura talk about the historical events that framed her story while looking out at the water of Norfolk, realizing how close we were to where those events occurred, is something I don't think I'll ever get overLaura, also known L. M. Elliott was an award-winning, Washington-based magazine journalist, primarily covering women's issues, before becoming a New York Times best-selling author of historical and biographical fiction. Her novels explore a variety of eras (the Italian Renaissance, American Revolution, Great Depression, WWII, and the Cold War), and are written for a variety of ages. These works have won the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction, VLA's Cardinal Cup, and the Grateful American Book Prize; and been named NCSS/CBC Notables (National Council of Social Studies/Children's Book Council), Bank Street College of Education Best Books, Kirkus Bests, Jr. Library Guild Gold Selections, and received many starred reviews. Elliott holds a BA from Wake Forest University and a master's in journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a lifelong Virginian and history-lover.Laura Elliott shares a touching recount of her personal encounter with Pat Conroy, capturing his gracious spirit and the profound impact he had on her craft. Their conversation, much like Conroy's novels, was rich with storytelling and an appreciation for the nuances of human experience. In discussing "The Prince of Tides," Laura elaborates on the intricate themes and Southern settings that Conroy brings to life. The novel's protagonist, Tom Wingo, narrates a saga interwoven with familial struggles, the haunting legacy of mental illness, and the eternal tug of the natural world against societal constraints. Conroy's narrative prowess shines through as he paints vivid, albeit sometimes tragic, tapestries of life in the South. Laura segues this conversation into reflections on her own works, particularly her upcoming book Truth, Lies, and Questions in Between, showcasing how her journalistic roots and Conroy's influence weave into her storytelling style. Our conversation was not just about storytelling but also about the power of narratives to heal and connect. Books, like the tea we shared, offer a therapeutic escape—a thread of connection through time. As we hold onto these stories, let's remember how they can offer clarity in our storms, much like the stars guiding characters in Laura's story. If you enjoyed this episode, share it with friends, leave us your thoughts, and subscribe for more enriching discussions. Until next time, keep your tea iced and your bookshelf stocked!Pat Conroy's Iced Fruit Tea (makes 3 quarts)4 tea bags1 lemon1 orange, sliced, plus more for garnish1/2 pint strawberries or raspberries, plus more for garnish1 cup cubed fresh pineapple, plus more for garnish1. Place the tea bags in a large heatproof pitcher. Using a vegetable peeler or small paring knife, remove the rind from the lemon, being careful not to include any of the bitter white pith. Cut into strips and reserve. Juice the lemon and reserve.2. In a kettle, bring 10 cups fresh, cold water to a rolling boil. Pour over tea bags and let steep for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on your preference. Remove the tea bags and discard. Add the lemon rind, lemon juice, and other fruits. Refrigerate overnight.3. Strain the fruit from the tea and discard. Pour the tea over ice cubes and garnish with a pineapple cube, an orange slice, or a strawberry. In this EpisodeLaura's WebsiteLouisa June and the Nazis in the Waves by LM ElliottTruth, Lies, and the Questions in Between by LM ElliottSouthern Festival of the BookBoozy BooksellersPat Conroy CookbookGreat Santini by Pat ConroyMy Episode with Lisa Varga, VLA director and Library Journal's 2024 Librarian of the Year

Loudoun Street on the Old Town Walking Mall in downtown Winchester) on Sunday, May 28, 2023, from Noon til 2pm.  Bea and the New Deal Horse is a lyrical middle-grade historical novel set during the Great Depression - a moving tale of the spirit of American persistence, found family, and the magical partnership between girl and horse. Storm Dog is a whimsical, contemporary story of a young teen misfit finding her voice through the redemptive magic of nature, music, a stray dog, the power of her imagination, dog-dancing, and an apple blossom parade. Laura explained how she researches her books, offered suggestions for encouraging your teens/young adults to read - particularly boys - and talked about her love of historical fiction. Our conversation continued after the radio show ended where she told me how she chooses the names for her characters and talked about the struggle she faces to stop researching (the fun part according to her) and start writing. During our chat today, she talked about a few of her other books: Under a War-Torn Sky about Henry Forester, a downed B-24 co-pilot saved by the French Resistance. Walls is the story of two cousins in 1961 Berlin—caught on opposite sides of the Cold War standoff between American and Soviet forces and the city's constant espionage—confronted with the overnight raising of the Berlin Wall. Hamilton and Peggy! A Revolutionary Friendship is a biographical novel about the “wicked wit” Peggy, the youngest of the Schuyler Sisters made famous by the musical Hamilton. Louisa June and the Nazis in the Waves is a homefront portrait of a young teen living in Hitler's U-boat hunting grounds along the VA coastline, trying to help her family survive sudden loss, with the help of the indomitable, cat-charmer Cousin Belle.  Da Vinci's Tiger is a biographical novel about Ginevra de Benci, the celebrated young, protofeminist poet in Leonardo's first portrait (the master's only work permanently housed in the United States), set in the intrigue and pageantry of the Renaissance's mecca, the Medici-run city of Florence. You can find/order her books at Winchester Book Gallery and many other independent booksellers.

Dallas is talking with Anna Clark about her bold and expansive history that traces the changing and contested project of Australia's national story. You will think about this country differently after reading this book. A few years ago Anna Clark saw a series of paintings on a sandstone cliff face in the Northern Territory. There were characteristic crosshatched images of fat barramundi and turtles, as well as sprayed handprints and several human figures with spears. Next to them was a long gun, painted with white ochre, an unmistakable image of the colonisers. Was this an Indigenous rendering of contact? A work of history? Each piece of history has a message and context that depends on who wrote it and when. Australian history has swirled and contorted over the years: the history wars have embroiled historians, politicians and public commentators alike, while debates over historical fiction have been as divisive. History isn't just about understanding what happened and why. It also reflects the persuasions, politics and prejudices of its authors. Each iteration of Australia's national story reveals not only the past in question, but also the guiding concerns and perceptions of each generation of history makers. Making Australian History is bold and inclusive: it catalogues and contextualises changing readings of the past, it examines the increasingly problematic role of historians as national storytellers, and it incorporates the stories of people. Author Anna Clark is an award winning historian, author and public commentator. She has a PhD in History from the University of Melbourne and currently holds a prestigious Australian Research Council Future Fellowship at the Australian Centre for Public History at UTS. Anna is an internationally recognised scholar in Australian history, history education and the role of history in everyday life. She has written influential books such as The History Wars (with Stuart Macintyre), which won the NSW Premier's Prize and Queensland Premier's Prize for History, History's Children (about students' attitudes to Australian history), and Private Lives, Public History, as well as two history books for children (Convicted!—listed as a Children's Book Council of Australia notable book—and Explored!).

Gwen and Andy are back in 2016 with three new graphic novels for young readers. The two people with PhDs first discuss Feathers, by Jorge Corona with Jen Hickman (Archaia/BOOM! Studios), a title about a strange boy with feathers named Poe who watches over the Maze, a large city consisting of the poor and disenfranchised, and whose children are actually called Mice. In the center of the city, enclosed within a great wall, live the wealthy and cultured, including a young girl named Bianca, who longs for adventure and discovery within the Maze. But there's a mysterious evil presence at work in the Maze, something that neither Poe nor Bianca knows about. Corona himself has said, “If you think about it, Feathers is like Spider-Man in a Dickensian world.” Gwen and Andy both commented that Feathers is an engaging story with a European feel. Next, Gwen and Andy discuss The Only Child (Penguin Random House), the first graphic novel by Guojing, an illustrator who studied fine art at the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in China. Gwen set up the story by reading from Guojing's author's note that explains the inspiration for her text: “The story in this book is fantasy, but reflects the very real feelings of isolation and loneliness I experienced growing up in the 1980s under the one-child policy in China.” Guojing goes on to say that though she often stayed with her grandmother when her parents had to work late, she was also often alone, as were almost all of the children she knew. Guojing recounts an experience she had that inspired some of the action of The Only Child. She writes, Once, when I was six years old, my father put me on a bus to grandmother's house before he left for work. I fell asleep, and when I woke, the bus was almost empty. I panicked and ran off. There was no one to help me, so I started walking. I cried as I walked, following the electric lines of the bus. Luckily, I found my way back to a road that looked familiar and eventually reached my grandmother's house three hours later. As I've grown, I've realized that it is easy to become lost, but if I look hard enough, there is always a path -- like the electric bus lines -- guiding the way back home. The Only Child is a silent, or wordless, comic, drawn in hues of gray, black, and white, with panels that are foregrounded against a light brown background. Both Gwen and Andy note that the text is reminiscent of Shaun Tan's extremely popular and influential comic, The Arrival. However, whereas Tan's text was primarily focalized through an immigrant adult and the other adult immigrants whom he meets, The Only Child focuses on a young child, a girl who appears to be five or six years old. The opening pages demonstrate that while the girl has many toys and an active imagination, she quickly tires of doing things on her own. Gwen explains how The Only Child includes a classic plot structure in children's literature: the home-away-home pattern, in which a young child feels discontented, leaves home in order to pursue adventure, but quickly realizes that she is homesick and attempts to get back. The film version of The Wizard of Oz is one such text that our listeners may know well, but many others will undoubtedly come to mind. This plot structure is meant to instruct children that they need to create a balance between independence and dependence, something that Guojing emphasizes in her text. Andy and Gwen cannot say enough about the beauty, artistry, and depth of Guojing's debut graphic novel The Only Child. This text is geared towards young readers, but would be a fine addition to anyone's comics collection. The final book discussed is a fun, carefree ride called Teen Dog by Australian creator Jake Lawrence (BOOM! Box). Teen Dog -- a book about a super-cool dog who loves life and pizza -- remind Gwen of several John Hughes films from the 1980s and for Andy brought to mind a kinder, gentler Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Both feel that Teen Dog is a great read for reluctant readers with its early short chapters and engaging, colorful illustrations. To end the show, Gwen and Andy discuss the exciting news that comics creator Gene Luen Yang has been awarded one of the highest honors in the literary world when he was named National Ambassador for Young People's Literature for 2016. This honor is given out annually by the Children's Book Council, the Every Child a Reader (ECAR) initiative, and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. Yang has chosen “Reading Without Walls” as the theme for this year, and in his acceptance speech, he asked young readers to read outside their comfort zones, noting Books can be ambassadors for you, too. Books can help you understand people from other cultures, religions, and ways of living. Books can help you understand topics that you find intimating. Find a book with someone on the cover who doesn't look like you or live like you. Find a book about a topic that you don't know much about. Find a book that's in a format you've never tried before: a graphic novel, a words-only novel, or a novel in verse. Read without walls and see what happens. Andy, Gwen, and everyone at The Comics Alternative extends their congratulations to Gene Luen Yang. To learn more about his comics, including American Born Chinese, The Shadow Hero, Boxers & Saints, Secret Coders (with Mike Holmes), and to read his acceptance speech in its entirety, visit his website.
