This week on Eggheads, we sit down with Dr. Maurice Pitesky, veterinary epidemiologist at UC Davis and founder of AgriNerds, to explore how technology—think radar, satellites, and spatial modeling—is reshaping disease prevention in the poultry industry. His tool, the Waterfowl Alert Network, helps producers track wild bird movement in real time, offering a red-light, green-light system for assessing avian influenza risk.Maurice explains how biosecurity needs to expand beyond the barn, why data sharing is just as important as data collection, and what it'll take to modernize vet training for the 21st century. From drones that chase birds to historical migration data from the '90s, this episode dives deep into innovation, practicality, and the challenges of protecting flocks in the middle of a historic outbreak. What does it look like to layer biosecurity, mapping, and epidemiology in a way that actually works? And how can we build systems that help producers act before—not after—a crisis hits? Are you an egg industry pro? Reach out to be a guest on the show! Connect with us on LinkedIn and Instagram. In this special roundtable edition of Eggheads, we bring back “The Scramble”—our unfiltered format where leading voices in the egg industry sit down to tackle the Avian Influenza chaos head-on. Host Greg Schoenfeld is joined by three experts at the forefront: Dr. Kay Russo, veterinarian and virologist, Brian Moscogiuri, egg market analyst, and Jacques Klempf, former egg producer and industry veteran. This conversation covers it all: the continued volatility in egg prices, the relentless spread of avian influenza, the economic and emotional toll on farmers, and the controversial but potentially game-changing role of vaccination. Kay breaks down the scientific case for vaccines and what's holding the U.S. back, Jacques gives a raw look at what it's like to operate under constant threat, and Brian connects the dots on how market disruptions are impacting supply chains and consumers alike. We're in uncharted territory-- farmers are holding onto aging flocks, trying to stretch production. Replacement birds are hard to come by. Meanwhile, policymakers are stuck in neutral as the virus continues to burn. With over 50 million birds lost since October and a fractured industry response, the question becomes: how much longer can the system hold?If you care about food security, farming, or just want to understand why eggs are so expensive (and nowadays often missing from store shelves), this is the episode to check out. Please rate Eggheads on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Sustainability, animal welfare, and transparency—are they just buzzwords, or true commitments? This week we sit down with Sandra Vijn, Managing Director of Kipster USA, to explore how the company is rethinking the entire system—from upcycled feed to carbon-neutral farming. Kipster is aiming to redefine what ethical egg farming looks like.Sandra shares how Kipster's model challenges conventional agriculture, why transparency matters (even when it's not pretty), and the complex question of who really pays for sustainability. She explains how Kipster was designed around the needs of chickens rather than regulations, the challenges of bringing a European egg model to the U.S., and why regenerative and circular farming need to be part of the same conversation. Can Kipster carve out a new space in the American egg market? And will American consumers buy into their vision? Please rate Eggheads on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Are you an egg industry pro? Egg prices have been anything but stable in recent years, and behind every price shift is a complex web of market forces. In this episode, we sit down with Karyn Rispoli, Managing Editor of Eggs at Expana, to break down how egg pricing really works. From avian influenza outbreaks wiping out millions of layers to shifting market dynamics and the intricacies of price reporting, we explore why the egg industry is so volatile—and what that means for producers, buyers, and everyone in between.Karyn sheds light on the challenges of market reporting, the common misconceptions about price assessments, and the balancing act of gathering accurate data in an industry where even a few cents per dozen can have massive financial implications. As she explains, price reporters like her aren't setting the market—they're reflecting it. As the saying goes, "Don't shoot the messenger."Please rate Eggheads on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. This innovation is more than just a technological leap; it's a critical step in eliminating an inhumane practice while keeping the industry's economic realities in focus.Ending chick culling is no longer just an idea—it's happening. This episode I'm joined by Alex Rose who is Group Recruitment & Media Manager for a cake manufacturer called BBF based in Blackburn.I wanted to invite Alex on as a guest as I helped recruit him into this position and it was an interesting brief that his HR Director wanted from the role. Over the past couple of years I've followed what he has been doing and, more importantly, the impact and results the business have benefitted from.Alex started out as an agency recruiter before moving internally. We discuss the key differences from the two sides of the recruitment fence and the transition needed from a sales mindset to a service one when moving internally. It was when working for an organisation in the construction industry who had a fantastic brand that he first became aware of benefits a strong brand (and the subsequent employer brand) had on their recruitment and talent attraction.Alex now works for a company who manufacture cakes on behalf of supermarkets. They aren't able to put their name against any of the products they manufacture as the supermarkets own the product and any licensing. Therefore, this had historically made recruitment very challenging. However, a significant part of Alex's job is to create various content and marketing strategies to enhance the brand as well as shining a spotlight on what it's like to work in the company. After two years of consistently creating content the results speak for themselves in how beneficial this has been to their direct hiring.I personally believe there has been a real morphing between the role of a recruiter and a marketer in recent years and this episode highlights how significant and relevant this concept is.If you have any responsibility for recruitment in your company then this is absolutely an episode you don't want to miss.Support the show

In the wake of the damning report by Dr. Ayelet Kuper about antisemitism at the University of Toronto's Temerty medical school, the UofT's anti-racism office hosted a “restorative circle” for Jewish students and staff. The unusual event on Jan. 23 saw Hillel's UofT branch meet with about 25 people, via Zoom, where participants were asked to share their experiences with antisemitism, and then work on ways to get past it—and to find joy in being Jewish. It's a small but important step, say both Hillel and the UofT, in the overall effort to take antisemitism as seriously as it takes other forms of racism. So what was it like? Did it help? To find out more, Hillel's facilitator, Jacqueline Dressler, joins The CJN Daily, plus we speak to a student who attended: Alex Rose, who is also a former reporter for The CJN. What we talked about:. Mike Riste serves as the historian for the BC Golf Museum, and is the official historian for the PNGA. He assembled the initial research for “Washington Golf: 100 Years of Growing the Game,” the centennial history book of Washington Golf, published in 2022.Mike may claim he is not a writer, but his body of work is substantial. He co-authored the monumental “Championships & Friendships,” the centennial history book of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA); and wrote “Just Call Me Mac,” the biography of noted Northwest course architect, A. Vernon Macan. He first became involved in golf in the spring of 1960 when Capilano Golf and Country Club (in West Vancouver, B.C.) advertised for caddies for their opening day tournament. Mike would later become the very first Evans Caddie Scholarship recipient from the Northwest. In 1986, when the University Golf Course clubhouse (in Vancouver, B.C.) came vacant, MIke assembled a group of volunteers to renovate the structure into a golf museum. Today, BC Golf House is in a building that is the oldest structure still used for golf in B.C., and the BC Golf Museum is the only provincial or state standalone golf museum in North America. In 2013, Mike received the Distinguished Service Award from the Northwest Golf Media Association.

Disinformation and Propaganda 101. On this episode we get critical historical and background information on this subject through discussion with Bryan Jones – a technology entrepreneur, executive and adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law. He currently teaches a course called Propaganda, Deception & Manipulation in the Technology Era where he traces the evolution of information warfare, from the 1700s to current day. Central to a lot of Bryan's work is the intersection of democracy and technology. In our conversation we touch on the differences between propaganda and disinformation campaigns, plus the psychology behind how they work and how they became central to modern day political discussions. Bryan also talks about social media and algorithmic optimization to facilitate and accelerate the reach and impact. “A Lot of Good People Told Me” is a podcast exploring the effects of disinformation on the American public. This first season is the culmination of Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs graduate Alex Rose's Brumley NextGEN fellowship through the Strauss Center for International Security and Law at the University of Texas at Austin. This policy project explores issues at the intersection of cyber security, journalism and world affairs. On the podcast, Rose interviews experts like Bobby Chesney, Renée DiResta, Christopher Krebs and more to uncover how disinformation and propaganda is disseminated through technology and how it has come to shape our lives. On one episode she speaks with Dr. Scott Debb, a cyber psychologist who illuminates concepts like doomscrolling, confirmation bias and group think. She looks at the decline in trust in public institutions and how disinformation may be responsible. While looking at the security implications, she is also searching for viable policy solutions we can take out into the world to combat the detrimental effects of disinformation while protecting our right to freedom of speech, protected under the first amendment. The music featured on the podcast is composed by Alex Dupree, who also edited every episode and served as a crucial production partner. In the first of two back-to-back hikes in the Mourne Mountains Clare walks from Bloody Bridge near Newcastle, on the coast of County Down, up into the hills. Led by Alex Rose of the Northern Ireland Young Walkers, they begin at a stone sculpture which – from a certain angle – look like a human face in profile. This is the Smuggler's Head which helps to tell the story of the ‘Brandy Pad' a local smuggler's route. It's a history-rich Ramblings which continues by following the Bloody Bridge River, so called because bodies thrown into the water, following a massacre during the 1641 rebellion, turned it blood red. Soon they're climbing steeply up to one of the Mourne summits, Chimney Rock, partly following an old quarry-rail track used to bring granite down to sea-level. The Northern Ireland Young Walkers were formed in 2005 as a way of getting more youthful hikers out and about. It's such a successful club that people don't like to leave, so the age range has widened as the members have aged. The second Mournes ramble – recorded on the same day - will be broadcast next in the series. It starts at a place whose name couldn't be more of a contrast: Happy Valley.
