Ep. 272: Christian Lorentzen on Pavements (and Pavement) Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. This week the movie Pavements (and the band Pavement) came to The New York Film Festival. So I sat down after a Lincoln Center screening with critic Christian Lorentzen of the London Review of Books among many publications, to get his initial impressions on the hybrid documentary from director Alex Ross Perry (Her Smell, Listen Up Philip). Lorentzen talks about the band's past and present (and future?), recalls attending the Pavement musical excerpted in the film, quotes the late Fredric Jameson, and ponders how earnestness and great poets fit into what the band is up to. Keep up with the latest from Christian Lorentzen at christianlorentzen.substack.com. Please support the production of this podcast by signing up at: rapold.substack.com Photo by Steve Snodgrass

When we decided to do a winter horror miniseries, we left one slot open fantasizing that Alex Ross Perry (director of HER SMELL, LISTEN UP PHILIP) would come school us about a forgotten gem of the genre. And he did. Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind's “Main Title” track for The Shining and Ennio Morricone's composition for The Thing are the central themes you hear. All the President's Minutes is a podcast where conversations about movies, journalism, politics and history meet. Each show we use the seminal and increasingly prescient 1976 film All The President's Men as a portal, to engage with the themes and the warnings of the film resonating since its release. For minute 60, I join the very talented writer/director of *Her Smell, Golden Exits, Queen of Earth* (and more), Alex Ross Perry. Alex and I celebrate this towering and memorable minute by showing of perfect technique with this format; every line, every angle, every choice... no stone unturned. *About Alex Ross Perry* Alex Ross Perry is a writer and director of films like Her Smell ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7942742?ref_=nmbio_mbio ) (2018), Golden Exits ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5687814?ref_=nmbio_mbio ) (2017), Queen of Earth (2015) and Listen Up Philip ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3093546?ref_=nmbio_mbio ) (2014). Alex Ross Perry is a New York born and bred filmmaker. In shows in his movies, too: The Color Wheel, Listen Up Philip, Queen of Earth, Golden Exits. A staple in contemporary independent cinema his latest, Her Smell, stars Elizabeth Moss as a ’90s punk rock star whose at the end of her rope. We talk his hypnotic new film (out April 12th), discarding unhealthy relationships, the toll of making indie films in 2019, and why he puts film before anything (or anyone) else. What does it mean to tell somebody else's story? In this ingenious blend of documentary and psychological thriller, Robert Greene (ACTRESS) follows Kate Lyn Sheil (House of Cards, LISTEN UP PHILIP) through her creative process as she prepares for her next, tragic role: Christine Chubbuck, the Florida newscaster who committed suicide live on-air in 1974. As Kate investigates (and ultimately becomes obsessed with) Chubbuck's story, she discovers that little is actually known about the real woman (despite the urban myth that her story was the inspiration for the classic Hollywood film NETWORK). Through their collaboration, Robert, Kate and cinematographer Sean Price Williams (HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT) raise questions surrounding the sometimes unstable boundaries between performance, the authentic self and the storytelling impulse. Winner of a Special Jury Prize at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE is as much about unraveling a mystery as it is a document of the creative process. Director Robert Greene joins us for a conversation on blurring the line between documentaries and narrative films, just what did he learn about Christine Chubbuck’s life and how has making KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE changed his approach to storytelling. On today's episode, I talk to filmmaker Alex Ross Perry. Alex was raised in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and attended NYU, where he graduated from their film program. In 2009, he made his first feature film Imipolex on a shoestring budget, and since then, he's made three other films: The Color Wheel in 2011, Listen Up Philip in 2014 (which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival) and his most recent film Queen of Earth starring Elisabeth Moss, which had its world premiere last year at the Berlin Film Festival..This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
It wasn't easy filling an entire episode with a filmmaker whom we've only gotten to see two movies from thus far. But that didn't stop my enthusiasm to talk about Alex Ross Perry with someone that is light years smarter than I was at his age. 18-year-old filmmaker Ben Medina joins me to talk Perry. We also delve into the many films and directors that have inspired Ben, what movies mean to him, as well as discuss some recent entries into the contemporary indie film genre such WHILE WE'RE YOUNG (very appropriate), THE OVERNIGHT, IT FOLLOWS, and a whole lot more throughout the episode. The what we watched segment has been bypassed a bit due to the geyser of conversation we shared about film and filmmaking, and what it means to us. Of course, the 2nd half focuses on both THE COLOR WHEEL and LISTEN UP PHILIP. Thanks as always for listening, and stay tuned for another sequel episode coming in August - Jim00:00 - 59:10 - Introduction / Ben Interview / General Discussion59:11 - 59:58 - Director Song59:59 - 1:30:41 - Alex Ross Perry (LISTEN UP PHILIP / COLOR WHEEL)1:30:42 - 2:08:20 - Other Recent Indie Films We've Seen / OutroBen Medina on Vimeo

We go on a writers' retreat with two older films and two sets of dueling writers, Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve in the comedic thriller DEATHTRAP going up against the sexy cat fighting led by Charlotte Rampling in SWIMMING POOL. This duel where the weapons of choice are typewriters and word processors has been inspired by a film new to DVD, Blu-Ray, and various VOD services in LISTEN UP PHILIP.

When most directors talk about the films that influence their work, they might mention one of two obvious citations. For writer-director Alex Ross Perry, there are literally hundreds that can range all over the history of movies. The director of Impolex, The Color Wheel, and his audacious new film, Listen Up Philip, comes on the show to discuss his work ethic, his rounds on the repertory scene, and his breakthrough onto the growing microbudget cinema. Alex talks about the making of his three features and their roles in forming an alternative to mainstream independent cinema, and how breaking traditional models has led him to the most fruitful of territory. Finally, Alex discusses one of the major influences on Listen Up Philip—Woody Allen's anti-Woody Allen film Husbands and Wives. The two discuss how the aesthetic choices made here are radically thrilling in a way rarely shown otherwise by the director, or any filmmaker for that matter. 0:00-2:10 Opening2:54-9:45 Establishing Shots - People's Park / Approaching The End10:29-1:13:00 Deep Focus - Alex Ross Perry1:13:59-1:15:37 Mubi Sponsorship - The Color Wheel and Wuthering Heights1:16:50-1:35:51 Double Exposure - Husbands and Wives (Woody Allen)1:35:55-1:37:48 Close / Outtakes

In the latest episode, Thompson and Kohn discuss Laura Poitras' "Citizenfour," the acclaimed documentary on Edward Snowden that premiered last week at the New York Film Festival, and wonder if it has shaken up the Oscar race for best documentary. They also revisit the best picture race and debate whether "Birdman" or "Boyhood" currently has more moment (and whether any of that matters). With the 20th anniversary of "Pulp Fiction" upon us, Thompson recalls that movie's role in the Oscar race two decades ago, and then the duo turn to more recommendations opening this week, including "The Book of Life" and "Listen Up Philip."
